“She was quaking with nerves. She hadn’t faced a camera since Judgement at Nuremberg (1961) sixteen years before … She even agreed to sing “Just a Gigolo”; it was a statement of the film and the title, and she realized we needed it even if she loathed it. I made it much harder for her because I wanted her to come through the arched doorway, walk to the piano without a cane and stand there singing the song in one long take. I knew she was in pain, but I wanted people to see she could walk and so did she. She had her own pianist, a man called Raymond, and we made two takes in English, then two in German to make sure we had it. All perfect. She walked to the piano without a wince, sang a song she hated quite perfectly and with a majestic sort of nostalgia. The crew and writer and producer were all there, and when she finished, I was supposed to say “Cut!” and I couldn’t. The moment was so charged and the spell she cast so total that the beats went by, one-two-three-four, until finally I came to my senses and said, “Cut!” and there was – literally – not a dry eye in the house. We had been admitted to a moment of great professional privilege.”
Director David Hemmings recalling in the 1992 book Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend by Steven Bach his collaboration with the 77-year-old German diva in Just a Gigolo. The frankly terrible film starring David Bowie was released in West German cinemas on this day (16 November 1978). The frail and reclusive Dietrich emerged from retirement to make a fleeting but haunting heavily veiled guest star appearance. (Dietrich’s scenes were shot in Paris; she and Bowie never encountered each other).
