Films watched (1960s): The Assassination Bureau Limited (Paramount, 1969); written & produced by Michael Relph; dir. Basil Dearden (based on the unfinished Jack London novel The Assassination Bureau Ltd). Starring Oliver Reed, Diana Rigg, Telly Savalas & Curd Jürgens.
"The Assassination Bureau is a political weapon or it is nothing. Properly used... it could bring down empires. I could make the destiny of Europe!"

Halloweenathon:Vault of Horror
Tumblr media
Today we look at a film based on Vault of Horror, the comics from the 50's....Not really,it just takes the title, and the stories actually come from Tales From the Crypt, but still
In this 1973 film 5 men enter a lounge and recount their nightmares
SO this films is based on EC comics and is a follow up to Amicus other EC comics adaptation Tales from the Crypt .Ive never read the comics but have seen thye previous film ,whichj ios a personal favorite of mine (And of course I have seen a few episodes of the TV show from the 80's and 90's and all three film connected to said series).Vault of Horror is a good movie and a good anthology .I dont think its as good as its predecessor Tales from the Crypt but it is an ejnoyable film
I will rank the segments from least fave to most fave
5.Bargain in Death -Lamest segment ,just a guy rying to fake his death for insurance and I found it boring, its the only dud in the movie
4.Midnight Mess -Guy goes to a mysterious town to kill his sister for inheretance ,unaware that its dangerous to be out atr night .This ones fine ,the twist is fun but its just funny how the brother is so upfront hin his murderous intentions .Fun fact the brother ands sister are played by actual siblings Daniel Massey and Anna Massey ,whose dad is Raymond MAssey AKA Johnathan Brewster from the macarbre comedy Arsenic and Old Lace ,so thats fun
3.This Trick Will kill you -A magician and his wife set out to steal a magic trick from a woman in India .Fun of this one is really Curd Jurgens and Dawn Addams as the villianous couple
2.The Neat Job -A man obsessed with neatness and order is constantly getting on the case of his new wife .Less horror (Till the end) and more classic dark comedy ,with it getting so high due to the punchline and the great performances of Terry-Thomas and Glynis Johns
1.Drawn and Quartered:An artist uses voodoo to enact revenge on those who wronged him .I love the idea of whatever the artist paints happening but really what sells this segment is a pre Doctor Who Tom Baker as the artist,he just has such a sinister quality
Overall reccomend this movie ,its reallly spooky fun

Adult Movie Posters Nurses for Sale (1976) As an epidemic threatens the world’s population, even a tropical paradise isn’t immune to the grave dangers involved. A potential cure has been discovered and when a shipment arrives in a lush island nation, the ship’s captain Markus (Curt Jurgens) has more trouble than he expected. Despite having the antibiotics on board, he is harassed by local law enforcement because his ship also carried some barrels of booze. After some wild barrel tosses and a lot of spilled alcohol, Markus and his crew leave to explore the island and in specific, the women that reside there. Meanwhile, a group of nurses work to keep public health in order, even if that means random threesomes that unfold to ease the patients’ suffering. Johanna von Koczian - Curd Jürgens - Angelica Ott - Christine Schuberth - Herbert Fleischmann

let me try giving a quick translation with my less than ideal skills (my credentials are the honorary mention i received in a EU wide translation contest in high school)
i tried to be accurate with the language but also to make it sound half decent in english
translation and translator’s notes under the cut (as to not make the post ridiculously long)
A roman encounter/interview with the Ferrari driver and his private life
How is Niki Lauda like
“I’m a computer but only behind the wheel. I hate ties, I drink Champagne, I love Bob Dylan… and women.”
A few days of roman sun have been able to “miracle[1]” even the icy world drivers’ champion, Niki Lauda; we’ve surprised him in a different light, happy, quick-witted, in a mood for mondanity, with an attitude that puts in discussion the image the sports public has of him: the computer, the ice man, the soulless driver.
Lauda, do you [2] recognize yourself in that character, the “computer”?
“It seems a bit overboard to speak of ice, soul, “computer”. I’m just a precise, controlled man who has a precise and dangerous job, a job that doesn’t allow mistakes. Behind the wheel yes, I’m a computer, but the coldness saves my life: I’ve never had accidents, I’ve never even been injured. The precision, the coldness that are attributed to me as a flaw, therefore, are dear to me, even if they cost me big daily sacrifices, and they influence my private life. I’ll give you an example: leaving aside the strictness of the eating regimen, sleep, et cetera, I can’t drink any alcohol, except the little champagne that’s mandatory after winning.”
About champagne and private life, you’re spoken about as a very fine man, as much as the child of an influential Austrian family can be. What do you read, how do you dress, what music do you prefer?
“As you can imagine I have very little time to read, therefore I read whatever I find, without following a precise literary design: newspapers, novels, news in some way interesting. As for clothing, I don’t have a precise design either except for the refusal of ties: I hate ties, especially worn with jeans. So I only wear jeans. To exorcise ties.”
And as for music? They say your preferences are influenced by the fact you live in Salzburg, and by your great friendship with the famous Von Karajan. [3]
“It’s actually the opposite: I like modern music, actually I’ll tell you I have a weak spot for Bob Dylan.
And are you also susceptible to women’s charm?
“Women, surely, if they’re beautiful I like them, if they’re ugly easily not.”
Your current girlfriend is very beautiful. They say she used to be Curd Jurgens’ wife…
“Curd Jurgens’ yes, but not his wife.”
And what’s the name of this beautiful creature? [4]
“Marlie.”
Let’s talk about sport now. You came to Rome to test the new Ferrari in Vallelunga, and to meet, alongside other Formula One and rally drivers, the young fans of motorsports [5]. Why Rome in particular?
“The Vallelunga track is tortuous, hard, and therefore right. But more importantly dry: in Rome there’s a damn good weather… this is the first reason. The second: today we strongly feel the need to close the distance with people who have taste for motorsports, especially young people. The meeting-debate that happened at the Fiera di Roma (Rome fair), organized by Fiat, was the first direct contact with this purpose.
Young people’s interest already exists, but there’s a lack of real possibilities to get closer to what is considered a sport “for rich people”.
“It’s partly true, but it’s poor people that are interested. With great sacrifices, many mechanics have become great pilots. Who has a passion can do it anyway. But of course rich people have more chances.”
You reached the top. Mean spirited people say you win only because the Ferrari is the best car in the world…
“Every person who has ever run and runs in that car has this knowledge: when you win, the merit is 30% of the car, 40% of the driver, and 30% luck.”
TRANSLATOR’S NOTES:
[1] “to miracle” is as far as i know not a verb in english. in italian “miracolare (qualcuno)” is a rare and older construct using “miracolo (n.)” as a verb. i had no idea how to translate this at all. it basically means “it managed to make a miracle happen to (Niki Lauda)”.
[2] the interviewer uses the third person speaking to niki following the italian language custom that the third person is a way to adress someone formally
[3] excuse my laziness here. the interviewer uses “maestro” to refer to Von Karajan. i will admit, i have no idea who this man is and what he does though i assume he is either a composer or an orchestra director. as per my laziness i decided not look him up or how to properly refer to him.
[4] the interviewer actually uses “fruit”, not “creature”, but since i think fruit sounds weird in english, i decided to substitute with a similarly endearing term. note how weird italian interviewers are referring to women… sadly, nearly 50 years later, they really haven’t changed.
[5] here and in all later occurences, i translated “automobilismo” as “motorsports”, though it’s slightly inaccurate. “automobilismo” refers to an interest in cars, both racing and street ones. i didn’t know how to translate it more accurately so i settled for this though it doesn’t necessarily work perfectly.
thank you for reading and you are free to give me any corrections or suggestions. have a good one!!
