Personal Statement
Hello, I am Mariia Buhaievska and I am from Ukraine. I was born and lived my entire life there, until I came to Korea for my undergraduate studies. At this moment in life, I am a learner, still discovering who I am and who I want to become. My deep interest in various forms of design has brought me to Yonsei UIC, where I am majoring in CDM (Culture and Design Management) and IID (Information Interaction Design). In the realm of art and design, I have experienced variety of different aspects. Starting with an official Art school, I learned traditional art, sculpture, and art history. I have also explored art and design on my own, creating graphic illustrations and animations through Procreate. At Yonsei, I have enhanced my skills in Blender, Unity, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Adobe Premiere, and MetaSpark Studio. I still must admit I am not as good with Touch Designer.
As a junior, I am seeking work experience in the design field. Currently, I have a part-time job as a graphic designer and product manager with the Ukrainian brand SweetStone. There I design packaging for their products and work on prototyping and production. Additionally, I am working as an RA (Residential Assistant) in the Appenzeller House for the third semester in a row. There, I guide freshman students, design programs, and collaborate with an RA team to organize large-scale events (approximately 150-200 people). I was a member of the DFK (Design Factory Korea) club and have also organized a Mockup Session event in collaboration with them.Beyond the design sphere, I am an introverted person who enjoys meaningful conversations with others yet cherishes time alone to find balance. Having recently adopted a cat, I now have much more home time than before :)
As mentioned, I appreciate the company of others and value understanding their perspectives. My favourite places are the high mountains and grassy fields; I am a true nature person who would prefer collecting mushrooms in the forest over a night out at a party. I enjoy drawing with gouache paints, creating 3D models in Blender, and surfing (even though I am not that good at the last one). Through the analysis of my favourite things, I have found my own style in art and life. Specifically, I've discovered that I enjoy depicting issues through nature by incorporating hard meanings into aesthetically pleasing elements, such as flowers (examples of which are available in my portfolio). I enjoy uncovering new design features and learning more about myself throughout the course. It was a really pleasant moment when I was able to create 3D models and environments on my own during my previous semester; it felt like unlocking a new level in a game, revealing fresh opportunities in design.
During this course, I am eager to learn more about gamification, which I believe is deeply connected with human psychology and thought processes—an area that fascinates me. I aim to understand why people prefer certain content or applications over others.
My current dream is quite straightforward: to financially support myself and my parents while living peacefully in a nature-centric area. I want to live near mountains or the sea, perhaps in a place similar to Jeju Island, where I can surf and work remotely. My plan to realize this dream involves working as a designer in a Korean or US company to build my reputation among fellow designers and 3D modellers. Eventually, I intend to transition to freelancing and online work.
thank you

I am so sorry for doing this now. It has been a while since someone tag me in one of these shsh
01. Are you named after someone?
It would have been cool, but no. >.>
02. When was the last time you cried?
I think it was almost two weeks ago? It is really hard for me to keep up with how fast the time flies. The reason for some might be silly, but I watched one of the fan animatics of Asha x Starboy. Just knowing that really talented people spent 3 years of their life creating interesting concepts, characters, and story beats only for Disney's executives to just wash it away with their snap of the fingers. What they did made me feel such rage towards company and empathy, sadness towards true artists, to the point that I just started crying. I was always sad about how they treated Treasure Planet, but this was even a more spiteful move than that.
03. Do you have kids?
Do some child characters from Honkai Star count?
04. What sports do you play / have you played?
I did some badminton when I was in junior high school (or secondary school?) for one month. I would have done it for longer if it wasn't for poor attendance from other people. ;-;
05. Do you use sarcasm?
Sometimes, but the issue with me is that, I have to think twice or thrice before speaking. Since I am not sure whether the person I speak to is honest or uses sarcasm against me. 😅
06. What is the first thing you notice about the people?
I think it would have been the vibes they give off? Like I had many encounters where people were nice to me, but still something was off about them, that made me alert. Like something wasn't right.
07. What's your eye color?
Grey, but sometimes I feel like they have a green hue in them, with few spots of brown.
08. Scary movie or happy endings?
Hard choice! But I think I will take a happy ending. As much as I love angst, the character I root for deserves a happy ending.
09. Any talents?
Mimicking a lot of sounds and voices. I can do such perfect chirping of a house sparrow that I confused people many times, since they thought a real one was near them shhs.
10. Where were you born?
Poland! :D
The land of pierogis and vodka.
11. What are your hobbies?
I recently started doing some photography! Other than that, I did some writing and editing some time ago. Sadly, I had to put them aside because of private reasons and uni. I hope that this summer I will learn how to draw better. Last time I did some "piece" was 2 or 3 years ago. Oof. O_o
12. Do you have any pets?
Yeah! I have a dog, Fig, a mixture of several breeds, she is the best girl. And a female black-white cat Bonia (Bou-nya).
13. How tall are you?
1.71 m.
14. Favourite subject in school?
I always enjoyed art or graphic related classes, Media Design, The Techniques of Advertisement, etc.
15. Dream job?
The problem I have is that I would love to try everything; editing, filmmaking, photography, storyboards, concept art, animation, and graphic design. But if I won a lottery, I would open my very own movie studio and create both animated and live action productions. The idea of making a piece that resonates with people as well inspires them to make a fanart or fanfics sounds so wonderful. Someone wrote a story based on my idea many years ago, and there is no proper description for what I felt back then. Like I realized, "Huh, something I just come up with, made this person spend their time and create an art based on it. My silly thing truly made their own creativity spread its wings."
Also, I want to kick Hollywood's ass, lol.
Aaahhh, thank you so much for the tag @king-a-queen!! 💚💚
15 Questions Tag Game
01 - Are you named after anyone?
First name: nope Second name: yep, after my grandma
02 - When was the last time you cried?
About a week ago bc I was laughing too hard Also techinically this morning. My eyes just started tearing up a bit while I was still in bed & staring against the wall. I guess that white wall was just tugging at my heartstrings
03 - Do you have kids?
The only children I have are my OCs <3 My current beloved OCs are Aym, Marchosias (💖💖💖💖💖), and Baal; all for Obey Me
04 - What sports do you play/have you played?
So as a kid, I took MSE (self-defense) classes, I did ballet for a short while, and I played badminton. But now I'm not really doing much sports anymore. I'm occasionally working out in a sad attempt to stay healthy but that's...not working out all that well because I keep forgetting about it lol. That being said, I walk anywhere as long as it's a walkable distance away (to me, that's around 90min max), idc it's the European mindset. Der Fußbus hält überall :)
05 - Do you use sarcasm?
As if I would ever smh what are these accusations
06 - What is the first thing you notice about people?
When I pass strangers on the street, I try to look for little moments that bring them joy. That being said, 90% of the time I'm just lost in my own thoughts & have completely tunnel vision, so imagine noticing anything 😭 When I first meet people tho, it's usually the way they look at you, which tbh is a little ironic because I sometimes just cannot look people in the eyes NFDHSKGJHKSDLGS
07 - What's your eye color?
They used to be blue, but now they're more of a greyish green with a few brown spots in them
08 - Scary movies or happy endings?
Okay endings, actually! Where characters don't get the happy ending they were hoping for, and some things are still a little messy, but all in all things are okay and they finally get to breath again. Though I guess that's kind of a happy ending? lol
09 - Any talents?
My newest talent is being able to imitate the cry of an owl. My sister explained it to me earlier & once I got it to work I've been doing it non-stop until I got lightheaded 😭 Worth it tho Other than that, being able to teach myself the basics of a lot of things within a day (one of the upsides of ADHD), as well as abandoning a lot of my projects after a while because I suddenly decided to start a completely different one (one of the downsides of ADHD) I also have a real talent for writing angst. Ask any of my closer mutuals, I keep terrorizing them with my ideas (love you guys 💖) And finally: telling myself that I'll go to sleep early & then it's 5am
10 - Where were you born?
in Germanyyy fun fact: I was born more or less close to a town that has a store called 'Mephisto' lol
11 - What are your hobbies?
being insane, obviously 💚 some of my mutuals can surely attest to that lol No, but in general I enjoy writing & drawing, as well as, uhm. Randomly deciding to take up multiple really time-consuming projects, such as the OM card rec thing I did that I still need to update ahhhh, my Obey Me OC & MC ask game that originally had 200+ questions before I cut it in half out of fear of it being too long, half of my side blogs, and SOOOO many other things. <- or in short, being insane 💚 I also really love cooking & baking! Side note, if anyone wants an easy chocolate lava cake recipe, you just need to ask... 👀 Also lately it's just been romancing Thanatos in Hades because I randomly remembered that I hadn't done that yet
12 - Do you have any pets?
I used to have clownfish and a starfish, but other than that I've never had any myself. I love the dogs I dogsit with all my heart tho, and there is this cat that I sometimes meet on my way to work. She always runs up to me when she sees me and won't stop meowing until I start petting her, and last time she climbed onto my lap (I sat down in the middle of the sidewalk, I did not care lmao), she's literally the sweetest 😭😭 I also ring the doorbell for her whenever it rains so she doesn't have to stay outside lol
13 - How tall are you?
1,68m or 5'6 if I got the conversion correct lol
14 - Favourite subject in school?
Heavily depended on the teacher, but generally art class because we usually got to work on whatever we wanted with and listen to music. Also English in 9th grade, math in 10th and German in 11th because the teachers were great
15 - Dream job?
I've been thinking of translations in general/software localizition for a while now. I just love dissecting all the small differences between languages (D.D.D.s being called 'D3' my beloved), + there are so many invisble choices made when translating. You'll always lose something because every language has its little quirks and a different mindset that can't be translated directly, but you'll also gain something that the original version didn't have. It's an art form in itself, and I really love that <3 The other job that keeps popping into my mind is event mangement. I already get to organize a ton of things for my uni since I'm part of the student council for one of my two majors. It's exhausting, but also really rewarding when you have people come up to you afterwards to tell you how much fun they had!
No pressure tags for a bunch of people, hehe >:) @alpine-forget-me-nots @healersadjust @misc-magic @sweetbrier2908 @reblogs-are-the-love @shootingstarrfish @mjoria @too-much-gacha @layphie @katboykirby @ghostlyyraccoon @lost-in-lamentation @bagofwetmice @glamphantasm @wizardthesai @mellonyheart @arlatthan as well as anyone else that wants to join!

20 Years of Mazeguy Smilies, 35 Years of Pixel Art
It's been twenty years since I first shared my smilies with the world! To celebrate the occasion, I made this collage:
Coincidentally, this year also means I've been making pixel art for about 35 years. I've written an article about my journey which you can read here, but I'll recap a few highlights:
1986: Dazzle Draw
The reason Mazeguy Smilies exists is probably due to Dazzle Draw, a painting program released by Broderbund Software in 1985. My family had an Apple IIe computer at the time, and I believe we bought Dazzle Draw the following year. I was eight years old at the time.
Back in those days, I didn't have a Wacom tablet, and drawing freehand was difficult. I figured out that the best way to create the curved lines and details I wanted was to zoom in and draw one dot at a time. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was learning the basics of what would later be called "pixel art". Today, I create smilies using the exact same technique.
My siblings and I had a lot of fun with Dazzle Draw, filling fifteen floppy disks (the ones that actually WERE floppy) with over 100 paintings. Unfortunately, only one has survived to this day. This portrait of Bowser was converted to black and white, and printed in my junior high school's newspaper.
1992: Mario Paint
My next drawing program was Mario Paint for the Super Nintendo. I loved the fact that you could combine art, animation and music to create multimedia. I still have my copy of Nintendo's Official Mario Paint Player's Guide, even though it's quite worn out from reproducing video game sprites and songs.
Mario Paint included several "stamps", small pictures you that could paste onto the canvas or use as a paintbrush. A Stamp Editor tool let you edit existing stamps or design new ones on a large, 16x16 grid. Sound familiar? Thanks to Mario Paint, my pixel art skills were refined a little further.
So, what kind of videos did I make using Mario Paint? Well... Um... Stuff like this...
1994: Game-Maker
Game-Maker was developed by Recreational Software Designs. It's a collection of design tools that allows users to create their own DOS games. To test out the software, I made a simple game in which a guy tries to get through a maze. Yes, this is where "mazeguy" came from. Somehow, it became my nickname, then the name of my website.
Mazeguy grew in complexity, and eventually morphed into Invasion of the Blobs, which later got a sequel. Both games required drawing and animating backgrounds, enemies, and heroes. Title cards, level intros, and cutscenes were also illustrated pixel by pixel.
2001: Flash Kit and Tripod
At the beginning of the new millennium, I started using Flash for the first time. I needed help learning how accomplish certain tasks, and discovered many helpful tutorials at FlashKit.com. I joined the forums, and found a thread titled "Smiley Award Winners". A user named ThundaChunk, a.k.a. JohnnySix, was awarding a small banner to the best smilies submitted in an earlier thread.
It was too late for me to participate, but after fifteen years of creating pixel art, the idea of making smilies intrigued me. I made a whole bunch and put them on my Tripod website. While I was having fun seeing how many emoticons I could come up with, I was also secretly hoping that another smiley contest would be held in the future, and I'd get my own Smiley Award.
Then, on March 29th, 2001, The all new FK members smiley thread appeared. I quickly posted a link to my collection. And so, after a little prodding, I got my Smiley Award.
Over the next two years, my website would get more traffic, and suggestions from visitors helped make my smiley collection grow. Both of these factors caused the site to routinely go over Tripod's bandwidth limit. My free web hosting service was no longer sufficient, so I registered Mazeguy.net on October 25th, 2003.
2005: Hoagie's Revenge
My brother and some of his friends formed a film group, and they needed an animator for one of their short films. It's about a man challenged by his roommate to complete a brutally difficult video game. My job was to build an original Nintendo game that is so unfair, so impossible to beat, that the programmers didn't even bother creating a second level.
You can read more about Hoagie's Revenge, the game within the movie, as well as complete sprite sheets here.
2013: Wordlock
Fifteen years after completing Invasion of the Blobs 2, I revistited Game-Maker and made a puzzle game containing 100 riddles. The graphics weren't particularly complex, but I think the sci-fi font I designed was pretty neat.
You can learn more about Wordlock and how to play it here.
2021: What's Next?
The introduction of emoji have pretty much made smilies obsolete. One avenue that might be worth pursuing is Twitch Emotes, but I've kind of moved away from creating pixel icons.
These days I spend most of my time working on my webcomic, Chuck's Devils. Sometimes I depict the main characters in pixel form, as seen here:
While the series is nowhere near as popular as my smilies were, or even my domino toppling videos (which is a story for another day), I like the process of creating wacky misadventures for Candace, Yu-Ri, and Lily. I hope you'll check out the comic and follow along. :)

Day of Black Sun Ensemble: Azula I
Agh, IDK WTF I’m even going to title this thing! Anyway, the basic idea is that this is, of course, about the events of the Day of Black Sun through the eyes of Azula and three OCs; the OCs are all paramours/victims of Ozai.
I really want to get all or at least most of it done before starting to post on ff/AO3, but there’s twelve chapters plus an epilogue and I want to make sure it’s okay!
Warnings for the entire fic: Some really heavy stuff here. All OCs (and Azula, of course) are underage when Ozai first takes advantage of them, and there will be repeated references to rape and dubcon, although nothing very graphic.
Warnings for this chapter: References to blood/menstruation.
PAST
Azula was eleven, and she was about to die of embarrassment.
It had seemed like just another routine sunrise firebending practice on the balcony. But halfway through, she began to feel awful; her head and stomach and back were all killing her. She managed to finish the whole routine by sheer force of will. Then, when she walked back into her room and shucked off her sweaty training gear, she saw the blood.
She didn’t freak out. She wasn’t stupid; she knew what this meant. It was just a bit earlier than she had expected. Last school year, all of the fifth graders at the Royal Fire Academy For Girls had gone to the assembly hall to see a rather condescending presentation about puberty (no puppet show this time, thankfully). “The average age of menarche is twelve and a half years,” they had said. But she was eleven years and one month, and here it was anyway. She’d reached every other milestone early, so she supposed it made sense.
Unfortunately, Shiza chose that moment to enter the room with Azula’s morning protein smoothie; her high-waisted gown failing to hide the fact that she was growing stout around the middle again. She made a little squeak of surprise, hastily set down the smoothie in its habitual place on Azula’s night table, and scurried over asking a million questions. Are you okay? Are you scared? Do you know what’s going on? Are you in any pain? Do you need any help? Do you want me to get Dr. Huang?
“Go away. And don’t tell anyone,” Azula growled. Her lady-in-waiting’s breathy, high-pitched voice was only making her headache worse. She was not in the least bit scared, and was perfectly capable of dealing with this herself. Her school had handed out samples of the necessary equipment after the presentation last year.
Shiza obediently bowed and backed out of the room as quickly as etiquette allowed.
She seemed genuinely worried about you, a voice in Azula’s head whispered. She immediately wrestled that thought into submission.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shiza may not have told anyone, but the laundresses were nosy gossips as always, so despite Azula’s efforts, the whole Caldera seemed to know by the next day. Servants tiptoed around her like she was on her deathbed, and the severity of her symptoms and heavy flow had made it so she’d had to stay home from school for two days.
Finally, a week later, it was all over. Azula still felt somewhat weak from the blood loss, although she could never let anyone know that. Father sent for her, as she knew he would.
“It happened earlier than I anticipated…but now you are a woman grown,” he told her. “Now you can serve me in every way.”
Azula nodded and smiled, trying to will her heart to stop racing.
“Show me. I’m ready,” she said.
The pain was excruciating, although she never let her smile leave her face, and then she hemorrhaged and had had to stay in bed again while she received iron infusions. But it was worth it.
PRESENT
Today, it was the day of the eclipse, and she would be serving Father in a different way.
She stood still, arms spread out at her sides, as Shiza’s gentle but experienced hands buttoned buttons, fastened hooks and snaps, and cinched straps. Her armor fell into place with a click, and the outfit was completed with the crucial sash to accentuate her trim waistline.
Shiza brushed Azula’s hair, careful to not let it snag on the armor, and pulled it into a perfect topknot. She applied exactly two drops of scent to each side of Azula’s neck. Finally, after giving the cosmetic pots a quick stir to ensure that they weren’t separated or dried, she started on the makeup: foundation, powder to take away the shine, lipstick red enough to make one’s eyes hurt, and just a touch of blush so she didn’t look too pale. For the finishing touch, she applied Azula’s eyeliner using the dull edge of a knife to make sure it was perfectly straight. Azula had requested that she do it this way; other people may have quailed at a sharp object being so near her eyes, but not her.
Her work done, Shiza backed away and bowed, awaiting Azula’s next command. Long ago, Azula had come to accept that, despite how annoying she found Shiza, the diminutive young woman was her most competent lady-in-waiting. During important occasions such as this one, she was the only one whom Azula could rely upon completely to make her appearance flawless.
Normally, at this time of day her rooms were bustling with servants bringing in breakfast and preparing Azula’s morning bath and laying out articles of clothing and toiletries to make Shiza’s job easier. Today, though, it was just the two of them, and things were eerily quiet.
“Thank you,” Azula said, finally breaking the silence. “You are dismissed.”
Shiza murmured her acknowledgement and bowed again. She seemed nervous today. Now that Azula was thinking about it, her lady-in-waiting had been acting oddly for some months now. Did she think that Azula didn’t know about her repeated trips to the harbor for excursions on that boat of hers?
She would have to look into that…tomorrow. Shiza would have to have a death wish to try anything today.
“You needn’t worry. We have had months to think this through, and are prepared for every eventuality,” Azula assured her.
“Of course,” Shiza said. As Azula closed her eyes, running through the plan a final time, her lady-in-waiting carefully closed the special case designed specifically for the makeup knife and left.
In Azula’s distracted state, she never noticed that, although the knife case was closed, the knife itself was absent.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soon, her Dai Li escort arrived to take her to the bunker. On their way there, they encountered the bastards, who would have their own room underground.
Anshi, of course, was heading up the line. As soon as she saw Azula, she blew on the whistle that was always around her neck and ordered everyone to bow.
Azula took the time to look them over. Behind Anshi, there were Ichiro and Zhilan; the latter was clutching her own baby to her chest. After them, neatly paired up, were Izumi and Ruanyu, Kenzo and Azen, Uzeko and Nozomi, and Lanying and Eri.
But wait…there were two missing. Upon Azula’s inquiry, Anshi explained, “Shiza took Zoren and Teza from the dormitory last night, Princess. She said that the Fire Lord had special plans for them.”
Hm. Shiza hadn’t mentioned this to her. That seemed suspicious too, although it was not unheard of for Father to change plans at the last minute. With another blow of Anshi’s whistle and a command for them to show Azula their best marching, the group set off.
Down and down and down they went, Azula leading the way, until they were in a special room that was below even the basement. From there, a creaky elevator would take them down one or two at a time. Azula noted that Father and Zuko were apparently already underground.
“What if the volcano blows up while we’re inside it?” the six-year-old Azen blurted out. Izumi burst into tears. The girl, despite being nearly fourteen, was scared of her own shadow and mostly nonverbal. Azula would have considered her simple-minded if she hadn’t read some of her elegant and eloquent poetry. Despite being two and a half years Izumi’s junior, Ruanyu was obliged to take on the role of an older sibling as she patted Izumi’s hand.
Anshi replied, “It’s not going to blow up. Now pay attention…”
“I hafta go to the bathroom!” Nozomi interrupted.
“There’ll be one when we get there,” Anshi said while rubbing her temple. “As I was saying, please pay attention as I go through this one last time. The elevator will take the Princess down first, and then us. You must all stay with your buddies at all times, and absolutely no wandering off. When we are all down there, we will be taken to our room. Does everyone remember what to do if the enemy breaks into our room during the eclipse?”
“We kick their faces in!” Ruanyu said brightly. “And maybe other places too! Like their…”
“Thank you, Ruyanu,” Anshi said pointedly. “But yes, that is the general idea. Older buddies are responsible for protecting the younger ones. And…” her voice broke briefly as she glanced down, “You must all do exactly as I say when I say it, no questions asked.”
“What passionate Fire Nation citizens you all are,” Azula praised. Internally, however, her mind whirred into action. Had Anshi figured it out? Just then, her escort tapped her shoulder; it was time for her to make her descent. She had no more time to think that over; now all her focus must be on the plan.
Even as far underground as they were, the elevator had a long way to go. After it stopped, she was escorted through a maze of hallways; the layout would be bewildering to anyone else, but Azula had memorized every detail long ago.
The room she had been assigned was bare of furnishings except a throne. No bathroom either; only chamber pots from Sozin’s day for the direst of emergencies. Anshi had lied about that so the kids wouldn’t panic. But it was no matter to Azula. They’d only be here a few hours at most.
So she crossed the room, sat down, and waited.

hey guys, i’m oliver. this is mario aka mar. i’m from buffalo, ny so when i learned there was a buffalo, mn, i knew absolutely had to do it ‘em.
❛ 。 ‹ xavier serrano. he/him. male. › “ MARIO MARINO at dean levinson’s office please. “ it’s that TWENTY-ONE year old JUNIOR from BUFFALO, MN, right ? can’t imagine what they’re in for this time, after all they are LAIDBACK & LOYAL. then again, their PRIVATE & UNFORTHCOMING tendencies could land them in the dean’s office any time of the day. from what i’ve heard they’ve joined THE MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM and majoring in ARCHITECTURE, but their trademark style consists of SNOWFLAKES CLINGING TO HIS HOODIE AND HAIR, A SMILE LIKE A WARNING BEFORE EVERY HIT, GRUESOME SCARS YOU'VE LEARNED TO LOVE. ˚ ◝ oliver. 21. they/them. est.
THE STORY ( honestly ngl this part reads like a wikipedia page so skip down to MISC for somewhat more relevant things )
-- minnesota : land of 1000 lakes, the state of hockey, of cold, long winters you learn to love or leave to forget ---- that was where he was born, on the coldest day of the year. maybe there’s something to that because he doesn’t get cold very often. ( yes, the cold never bothered him anyway...).
-- he had a pretty simple childhood, the only son of a single mother ( #doubleshifting ), growing up just a short walk from the lake --- wakeboarding in the summer and playing pond hockey in the winter.
-- they weren’t a wealthy family, though not struggling mightily either. hockey was an expensive sport, though, and he played through his early days and partially through high school with second and third hand gear when possible.
-- early on, he learned being flexible, adaptable, and always having a good attitude was highly important ; his upbringing definitely had a large effect on that. once he turned 16, he picked up a gig as a waiter to earn some cash for himself. besides being able to scrape enough together to buy a nice new stick, it was certainly a character building experience.
-- architecture was something that felt natural to pursue. hockey wasn’t the end all, be all, though he hoped he would remain connected to the sport ( beyond beer league ) after his prime playing days ended. he had a certain knack for sketching and accurately capturing perspectives -- uncharacteristic maybe, but there all the same. he turned to architecture in the hopes of someday being able to design an nhl arena in the future.
-- cornell felt like a huge longshot : prestigious, ivy league, and terrifyingly expensive. it was his reach school ( st. cloud state was his fallback ), but seemed worth the risk. as luck would have it, cornell had it’s eye on someone on a rival team his high school team played in the state tournament at the end of his junior year, but in the particular game they visited, he caught their eye as well. that conversation afterward was a shock to him, the first time he considered possibly being good enough to make hockey more than just a fun pastime. from there, it seemed too good to be true : acceptance into cornell, a nice athletic scholarship, hockey on a d1 team.
-- that summer, it was one of his days off from the restaurant and he was at a friend’s lakehouse watching the nhl draft with some friends. he was aware it was a very slim possibility ( and well, everyone who plays always hopes just a little right? ). so they had day two of the draft on in the background, while they were eating some freshly grilled burgers and drinking some not completely legally obtained beer and making plans to go out on the lake later. mar was on the couch cracking some joke when he saw his name on the tv : the fourth round, 95th overall to the vancouver canucks. he kinda stared at it not comprehending, and once he did, he stood up and told his friends they were going to the lake.
-- he’s tried not to let himself think to hard about the fact. the fourth round is a very long shot at best --- but it’s not impossible. he’s dutifully gone to development camp every summer since, but his focus has remained to his school and on his work.
-- he knows he has a choice to make at the end of this season : stay another year to finish college or take that next step forward. architecture is what he likes but hockey is what he loves, and maybe he didn’t really realize he might actually get a chance to live out his true nhl dream. he’s been trying not to focus on it. what he does know, is that this year or after he graduates he plans on signing with vancouver if they’ll still have him -- no matter what anyone tells him. they’re the ones that believed enough in him to draft him three years ago, and he feels a sense of loyalty to them for that.
MISC
-- he almost exclusively goes by ‘mar’. no one knows if it’s taken from his first or last name : it’s a left twix/right twix kinda debate. his teammates probably call him marsy or some shit like that.
-- 6′3″, 193 lbs
-- his wardrobe is pretty much all adidas pants, cornell hockey hoodies, t-shirts from various hockey tournaments, running races, and other misc things you get free t-shirts from. he also has a pretty big chunk of canucks related things from the three development camps he’s been to, but he doesn’t wear it too much because it feels a little like a brag to him sometimes.
-- he’s not that superstitious. he does have a routine before every game, but if things get messed up or done in the wrong order, it doesn’t phase him at all.
-- when he was accepted into cornell, he took some of his long-stashed savings to buy brand new bauer skates. it was the first time he’d ever had brand-new skates. they fittingly ended up having red accents. all his pads are still secondhand, though.
-- he has a small sketchbook. he’s constantly sketching buildings, usually in pen. when it’s nice out, you can find him on the quad drawing some campus building or another. he’s likely redesigned lynah rink like a hundred times already.
-- he prefers to be in the shadows rather than the limelight, and his style of play dictates that. he’s not a goal-scorer, not an offensive defenseman, and isn’t all the flashy. very much has a “if no one notices me, then i’m doing my job”-type mentality, because he assumes if someone does it’s probably because he didn’t do enough to prevent a goal.
-- his reaction to being drafted is very On Brand : constantly brushing off things that are pretty momentous. it comes from a bit of a place of feeling like he’s not really worthy of praise. not that he doesn’t like praise, it’s just... it’s complicated ?.
-- very much a steadying force. knows when to laugh, when to be serious, how to just be a rock on the blue line and in the locker room. he tries not to let too much phase him or get to him either. sometimes people joke he would’ve made a good goalie because of it. ( he laughs because while he loves his goalies, they’re really a complete different breed ).
PERSONALITY
+ laidback, loyal - private, unforthcoming
mar is the kind of guy you want to be friends with. he laughs easily and has a certain friendliness about him. that being said, he has a way to make you feel like you know him but you really don’t. he’s a deeply private person and doesn’t freely disclose much of his close personal life : everything from his emotions, to the fact his wrist is bothering him, to any doubts he has. the frivolous things are given freely : weekend plans, parties, opinions. there’s no true reason for his private state, just that he feels it’s important to keep some things very close to your chest.
on the ice he’s far more imposing, unafraid to throw big hits or get in a scrum if he needs to. he’ll protect his goalie as well as his fellow teammates if the occasion arises.
THE AESTHETICS
SNOWFLAKES CLINGING TO HIS HOODIE AND HAIR... not the type to wear a winter jacket even if the weather maybe calls for it. he loves when it snows and enjoys walking to class when it does so.
A SMILE LIKE A WARNING BEFORE EVERY HIT... “ MARINO smiles before every hit in this thing so the other guy knows what’s coming. ” it’s no secret that mar is a physical presence on the ice ; not dirty, just physical. and he enjoys it.
( tw. kinda graphic injury?? ) GRUESOME SCARS YOU'VE LEARNED TO LOVE... well... mar almost died when he was sixteen, in the middle of playing a tournament. someone crashed the net, he went down trying to defend it, and a skate slashed his neck. it’s a miracle it was a shallow cut --- a few millimeters more and his main artery would’ve been slashed. his souvenir from the incident is a three inch scar on his neck that starts near his adam’s apple and extends at a diagonal toward his right ear. it’s healed to look a bit like a rash or hickey.
ACCOLADES
RUNNER UP, ECAC DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR ( 2018-19 ) : given to the best defensive defenseman in the conference as voted by the coaches of each ECAC team.
NCAA (ECAC) ALL-ROOKIE TEAM ( 2017-18 )
95th OVERALL, 2017 NHL DRAFT ( vancouver canucks )
SCOUTING REPORT
MARINO provides a strong, physical and highly reliable defensive presence on the blue line. he is unafraid to block shots and sacrifice his body to do so. his skating ability, while not elite, is more than proficient and he can get significant speed when necessary. his is more likely to stand up to hits rather than evade them. MARINO exhibits exceptional passing ability; however, he could do well to improve his overall offensive capabilities and on-ice agility. regardless, his value on the penalty kill and ability to diffuse high danger situations from the opposing team must not be overlooked.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
-- i can see him being friends with whoever the student photographer is that captures the team. creative processes fascinate him.
-- close friend on the team: preferably another dman or goalie. why is this here. i should just send it into the main for the wc list huh.
i suck at coming up with these honestly, so i’m just going to go read intros and hopefully be inspired along the way.

I'm getting my degree soon and I want to apply for a job as a game programmer, but I'm not really sure what would be expected from me when it comes to technical skill, since the more I look into game programming the more I find out that I don't know. I'm sure even a skilled software engineer doesn't know the secret techniques of game design. What's the first couple of months like for Junior Engineer in the industry? What's expected of someone completely new to game design?
So… first off, let me be clear here - a programmer (especially a junior programmer) almost certainly won’t be doing much game design work. It helps to have game design sensibilities and experience (especially if you’re a gameplay programmer), but programmers don’t create the content, they build the systems out of code that parse the content the designers make and process it into what players see on screen. [Game designers create the game’s content]. Programmers build the systems that the makes the content do stuff.
Depending on what your field of expertise is, a game programmer may never interact with game designers over the course of the project. An engine programmer or a graphics programmer, for example, rarely interacts with game designers. By contrast, UI or gameplay programmers often spend much of their time coordinating and working directly with game designers because they are building the systems that will run the content that the designers create.
As a junior programmer on a team, you’ll likely start off with a set of tasks that work toward the same goal in a self-contained lower-priority area, like a game mode or a single system that doesn’t touch a lot of other systems. Your first major tasks will be to learn how the system you’ll be working on interacts with the rest of the game at large, and the overall workflow of the project - how to build and run the game, how to review and submit code to the repository, how the coding standard works, etc. As you ramp up and learn how to be productive, you should be given tasks that expand your understanding of the code and how the systems work within your little purview of the game, along with working knowledge of who knows what on the team and whom to ask specific questions when you don’t understand something. You’ll probably be tasked with adding new functionality, dealing with organizing and structuring data, improving/refactoring old code, and so on. You’ll become the team’s expert on your little corner of the game, the person that others will go to with questions about your system. And then you’ll gradually start learning about how your system interacts with other systems, what sort of functionality and data they deal with, where their inefficiencies are, and what sort of improvements could be made on them.
Once you’ve expanded your understanding from the scope of the single system you’ve taken ownership of to other adjoining code systems, you’ll probably be getting close to becoming a mid-level programmer. Once you reach that stage, you’ll start taking ownership of more than just your system, you’ll be responsible for multiple systems - likely those near your system. You’ll learn more about how the systems interact, how to organize things more efficiently, and probably even start building your own new system (probably under a senior programmer’s supervision). Once you master that, you’ll be moving into senior programmer territory.
For more information on that, take a look at [this breakdown about the difference between programmers at each experience level].

Kim Minseok - Shop Window
Genre: Fluff, all the fluff
Note: In celebration of Exo’s eldest’s birthday, I decided to write a fluff piece for him! I’ve always adored Minseok very much and I thought this type of idea would suit him. I hope that you all enjoy this piece! As always, feel free to let me know what you think! ^^
Enjoy~
Because of the situation with tumblr links, please check my bio for links to my masterlist~

Today was an important day. It was a particularly big day for you. So why was it that it felt as if everything was against you today? You had set additional alarms the night before to help you wake up an hour and a half earlier. You slept through all of them, even your usual one that you placed across the room, went off thirty mins late. Luckily your morning routine went alright, except for the fact that your powder promptly exploded on you and the beautiful clothes that you had picked out for the occasion. This led you to scramble around your closet for another clean dress shirt and skirt, both of which had to be ironed. By the time that was all done, you had about ten minutes left before you absolutely had to go, and you had to choose between fixing your disheveled hair, or getting some coffee in you before the morning started. You opted for coffee but realized that you hadn't made a pot yet. So you quickly had to make one, downing the hot liquid at about a minute left before grabbing your purse and running out the door.
You knew that you didn't look as presentable as you wanted to, but you hoped that no one else would be able to notice. After all, you really needed this job, and you weren't sure you could handle being rejected again. Up until three months ago, you had been working at a small graphic design studio. The company did a ton of work for different businesses across many different industries. Everything seemed to be going well. However, as time passed, these companies found other studios to do the work for them, and although the company where you worked tried to appease their clients, it didn't work. Projects dried up, funding was non-existent, and the small graphics house had to close down.
Though finding a new job was always tricky, you didn't anticipate that it would be as hard as it had proven to be. You thought that you would go at most a month without a job, during which time you had enough savings to keep you afloat. However, by the end of that first month, you realized that it wasn't going to be like that. Every other graphic design how you applied for were either full, looking for managers and not designers, or they were looking for junior people they could boss around. None of this suited you or your experience. Truthfully, the entire process made you question your work experience. You took a couple of freelance positions here and there, but you knew that wouldn't help to sustain you. You had to find a job, and fast.
It wasn't until a couple weeks ago that a friend of yours from college reached out and told you of a company that had just lost one of their graphic designer to a more prominent organization. He suggested that you apply, and within a couple days, they had gotten back to you to set up an interview. Since this job felt promising, you wanted to look your best, but... well... you know how well that went.
You quick footsteps carried you down the bustling streets, passed one of the most crowded coffee shops in your area. There was never a time of day when they weren't busy, and it made it a bit of a bottleneck for those that were trying to get through. You managed to weave your way through the crowd; however, landing squarely in a less busy area. Checking your phone to make sure that you still had time to get to your interview, you smiled a bit when you realized that your fast pace had actually put you a few minutes ahead. Maybe everything wasn't going wrong today after all.
As you were making your way down the street, your eyes momentarily made contact with your reflection in one of the shop windows. Your steps slowed so that you could get a better look at yourself. Honestly, you had rushed out of your apartment so quickly, that you didn't even get a chance to do one last once over. Now that you saw your appearance in this window, you couldn't help but cringe. Your shirt was still a bit wrinkled, lipgloss probably needed another coat. Your hair wasn't as much of a mess as you had expected, but some strands had refused to lay straight. You gently pushed them down and tried to move your fringe so that it wasn't wholly covering your eye. Just as you were looking up from your purse where you had been digging for a hair tie, your eyes spotted a pair of legs through the glass. Wait a minute... a pair of legs would mean-
Slowly, your eyes trailed up the rest of the way, following the legs up to the individual's torso and towards their face. You locked eyes with him, the male grinning at you as he leaned over the table in the small shop to clean it. That was when you realized that you had stopped in front of one of your favorite restaurants and that Minseok was the one looking at you while you were using their shop window as a mirror. You could feel the embarrassment coursing through your veins.
The restaurant that you had coincidentally stopped in front of was owned by Minseok's parents. For as long as you had gone there, Minseok had been working there. The two of you would chat from time to time, but it hadn't been anything more than that. There were times when you tried to pull more information out of each other, but there always seemed to be a boundary there that you both were not comfortable with crossing just yet. This didn't mean that you didn't find him cute though. And the fact that you had just embarrassed yourself in front of him made it worse.
You watched as Minseok chuckled, probably at how red you were in the face. But a smile soon graced his features as he gave you a thumbs up. Was he saying... that you actually looked okay? The thought made your heart speed up a bit. Yet, not wanting to leave him hanging, you gave him a small nod and mouthed, 'thank you.'
His smile grew before he asked you want you were dressed up for. You mouthed that it was for an interview, Minseok quickly nodded in understanding. He put his first up and mouthed, 'hwaiting' to you before you ran off down the street, realizing that you had 'talked' away all that time you saved. Still, it felt worth it. Even if the entire conversation was silent, Minseok encouraging you had put a spring in your step, gave you back some of that confidence you had lost, and now you were ready to take on anything...
The interview process lasted almost the entire day. You arrived at their office just as everyone was getting in. Their office administrator showed you around, told you about the company, and some of the more cultural things about the studios, as well as amenities. You were then led into a conference room, and that was when the real interview started. You had rounds of people asking about your experience, what you had learned from it. You were asked about how you would approach certain situations, or how you would handle a client's wishlist for their logo. Some interviewers brought up your portfolio and had you walk them through one of your designs, asking for what industry it was for and your overall process. This type of interviewing procedure was more extensive than you were used to and it didn't help to ease your nerves. However, you got through it, and the last team told you that they would be in contact soon if they thought you were a good fit. You thanked them and left, early evening having already set in.
Your legs trudged your mentality exhausted body down the familiar streets, trying to bring you to your apartment door before you collapsed. As you passed by the usual shops that signaled to you that you were close to home, a familiar smell filled your nostrils. It was the aroma of your favorite dish, and you knew exactly where it was coming from. Pulling your body out of its pre-determined path, you ducked into the intimate restaurant.
As soon as you entered, you were greeted by Minseok, that smile on his features even made your tired self smile back at him. "Your usual table towards the back?" he asked over the bustling crowd of people that were crammed into the small space.
"That would be great," you said replied, trying to blink your tiredness away as you followed him back to your table, situated in the back corner near the kitchen. Not many people liked this spot. It was a bit louder than others, and there was overall just a lot of foot traffic. But usually, you were here on your own, so you weren't bothered by it. Also, the slightly secluded atmosphere also helped you work... as well as exchange glances with Minseok whenever he walked by.
"Things are a bit busy right now, but when there's a break, I'd love to hear about how your interview went," he said excitedly, pulling your chair out for you. "I'll let father know that you'll have your usual too."
You thanked him as you sat down and watched him disappear into the kitchen. You set your purse down beside you, replaying your entire interview process in your mind as you munched on the sides that his mother had dropped off for you. Honestly, the more you thought about the interview, the more you nitpicked all of the things you shouldn't have done. It was long over now, you did what you could, but your mind still wondered if they would find fault with certain things. Even the smallest things you worried about. You were so concerned over these little mistakes that you made, that you didn't even notice how heavy your eyes got, as you drifted off to sleep in the loud restaurant.
You were awoken from your slumber when it came to your attention how odd your sleeping position was. If you had made it home, why did it feel like you had fallen asleep sitting up? And why was the thing against your cheek kind of hard? Willing yourself to finally open your eyes, you noticed that your environment was still dimly lit, though most of the lights were off. It took you a minute to register the wooden tables, the black cloth that covered the way to the kitchen. As soon as you realized that you had fallen asleep at Minseok's restaurant, your eyes widened, and you quickly sat up. This caused a wave of dizziness to wash over you, and you promptly grabbed your head.
"You're awake," a familiar voice called, yet as soon as he saw you cradling your head, he was quickly kneeling at your side, gently calling your name. "Hey, is everyone alright?" he asked softly.
"Yeah... I'm fine..." you said slowly. "I just sat up too fast," you added, pulling your hand away from your eyes when you felt balanced again. You were greeted by Minseok's smiling face, and your heart sped up again. He was really too kind.
"H-how long was I asleep for?" You stuttered out your question, feeling that heat rising to your cheeks again. You heard a soft chuckle leave Minseok's lips as he took the seat across from you. This only made you more embarrassed. As if Minseok catching you fiddling with your hair in their shop window wasn't bad enough. Now he had you falling asleep in his restaurant. The universe really just wanted him to find you as unattractive as possible, didn't it?
"For a few hours now. Not long after you sat down, mother told you that you were looking a bit drowsy. Then by the time I brought out your food, we all realized that you had fallen asleep. We thought about waking you up, but mother pointed out that we weren't particularly busy and that you looked exhausted and probably needed the rest. So we let you sleep here. Your table is hidden enough where no one really saw you, so you're in the clear."
'But you saw me,' you thought to yourself. "T-thank you, Minseok. I really appreciate it..." you said gently, still too embarrassed and groggy to say much else. Lucky for you, he wasn't.
"We kept your food for you. Why don't I go heat it up, and you can tell me about your interview?" Minseok suggested. He heard you trying to protest, bringing up how late it was, but he quickly declined. "It's alright. You need to eat to get your energy back. I'll eat with you. I think they left me some food," he said with a chuckle before disappearing back into the kitchen.
In no time at all, Minseok had the table set up like it would have been during business hours, side dishes all along the center of the table, your food placed gingerly in front of you, and his in front of him. "So, tell me how the interview went."
And so you recounted your entire day to him. You told him of where the studio was located, about what they usually did, and the companies they had designed for. You told him of the grueling back to back interviews, and as you spoke of them, you could see Minseok's eyes widening. He'd interject from time to time, asking if they had really said the things you parroted to him, and you could tell that some of it made him angry. Yet overall, as you finished up talking about your last interview, he seemed relieved. "I'm glad it seemed to have gone well. You've been here before after other interviews and from the little you had said, they didn't seem to go well. I'm glad this one did though. I'm also pleased that you were willing to share that experience with me."
As soon as those words left Minseok's lips, you came to the realization that this was the most in-depth conversation the two of you had ever had. Often you would just exchange pleasantries, check in with each other on a very superficial level. The restaurant was usually too busy for the two of you to just be chatting in the corner, and so you never got the chance to talk to him. Realizing that this was your first conversation together also made you feel a bit bad. "But Minseok, all did just now was complain about my interview. That's not the type of conversation we should be having..."
"It's fascinating to me, though. I always see you coming in here, sometimes with your drawing tablet, sometimes with a stack of papers and I couldn't help but wonder what it was that you did. This gave me a glimpse into your life, and it makes me happy that you shared it with me," he told you honestly, sending you that radiant smile that you had grown so fond of.
"I still know so little about you though, Minseok," you countered. You watched as Minseok quirked his head to the side, blinking a couple of times as if he were thinking about something.
"You do bring up a good point. Well then..." Minseok started, leaning over his food to get closer to you. "How about, if you get this job, we can go out for a nice evening together, and I'll tell you anything you want to know about me."
You couldn't help but giggle at his attempt as using a date as a reward for getting a job. "Oh? And what if I don't get the job?" you offered, wondering what he would say in response.
Minseok gently bit his lip, thinking over his options before smiling. "Well, then you call me anyway, and I'll take you out and make sure that you completely forget about that rejection. Oh, and you can ask me whatever you want," he added.
"It sounds like I win either way," you pointed out.
"You do, but so do I," he replied, smiling as he held out his hand towards you. You gently placed your phone in it as he quickly typed his number in before handing it back to you. After you finished your meal together, Minseok made sure you got home safely. You slept well that night, knowing that, no matter how you did, the evening still ended well.
The next morning you got a call from the hiring manager at the company where you interviewed. They called to extend an offer to you for the graphic design position. You agreed after hearing their terms, and they told you that an official offer letter would be coming through your email soon, as well as paperwork that you had to fill out. As soon as you hung up with her, you couldn't help how overjoyed you felt. The first person you called to tell the good news to? Minseok obviously. He had a date to plan now, after all...

2010: Integrity Marketing (AED 2,000.00)
I started my professional career as a Junior Art Director at a small-scale Marketing Agency. It was near my home. The hours were flexible. This is where I’ve learned to interact with people who had a different mindset; a different view; different opinions; different ways of working. It’s where I’ve also learned how to become receptive (somewhat). I’ve also realized then that Graphics Designing was a skill that I loved but didn’t care to upskill because I didn’t have the patience nor willingness to adapt to other people’s design opinions. I was more eager to interact with people than to stay in front of the screen.
This experience was important because I was able to identify my career preference in the Advertising industry, which was Client Relations.
2011: Formul8 (AED 4,000.00)
This was a short stint, where I have spent less than 60 days in the organisation. Formul8 is an advertising agency in Singapore, which had branched out in Dubai. The colleagues were competitive and the leaders were cruel and had no regard for work-life balance.
This experience was important because I have seen the value of time, kindness, workplace culture, and passion.
2011-2012: Sky High Advertising (AED 4,000.00)
This setup was peculiar and somewhat vague. I was a Traffic Coordinator, somehow an Accounts Coordinator, and kind of an administrator? I don’t know. Apart from the confusing role, it was my first time to encounter workplace politics and its insensitivity. The ladies who were sitting next door to me were ingenuine and conflicting.
More than my core responsibilities and professional learnings, this experience was important because I’ve learned to hold on to Faith and Let God do the rest. I’ve learned that if it weren’t for my Faith, it would have made me give up easily. This was where I’ve also learned to rely on logic rather than emotion in my profession.
2012-2014: ABS-CBN (AED 7,300.00)
This was the first job I fell in love with. It was challenging, it was rewarding - I was growing into my own. It required a lot from me, but I was happy to pour myself into the work. This was where I was put to the limit and exceeded my expectations for myself. This was where I’ve learned to provide solutions rather than present issues.
This experience was important because I saw the value of challenges. This experience was important because I realize that I had to put myself repeatedly in overwhelming situations to make it less overwhelming in the future.
2014-2015: Shell (AED 6,900.00)
This was also one of the many short stops in my professional career. I saw value in streamlined processes, I saw value in workplace culture, I saw value in SAP, I saw value in inclusivity.
2015-2016: Falcon (AED 7,000.00)
What was it like

2016-2019: BAUER Equipment (AED 7,000.00)

My Career Roadmap
Here is my career roadmap visual. To explain it better, I will write a short description of my plan of action.
I have three options that I have currently analysed and planned for. I admit, it is extremely unlikely that the agencies have chosen will choose me, however for the purpose of the roadmap, this is the journey or should I say these are the journeys that I have considered and what to strive towards.
I have split the roadmap into 7 areas. Most of them are job opportunities, and I have included a personal section. I think it is critical that I keep improving and don’t stand still. Standing still and just getting a job isn’t enough for me. I have to actively get out there and improve, and as the tutor mentioned in a lecture once: everyone has skills. It isn’t something that you think of in your own bubble that you’re in, but it’s so important to remember. Everyone is competing with each other, so effort has to be put in if you want something.
My end goal is to create an app and release it on the App Store. That is a personal goal of mine and it is one I hope to achieve.
Continuing with my job at Cherry Tree Creative will be my immediate plan, however this would just be for the time being.
I have taken into consideration my early research into the UX Designer role, and the typical promotional journey that happens. Within 2 years I could expect to be a UX Designer rather than a junior, and by 2026 I would be eligible to become a senior UX Designer.
I also have a personal goal of talking to students on this course, as well as my graphic design course back in Leeds. I want to give back to the community at some point and that would be an honour for me to give students a helping hand as I certainly have grown in confidence in my work with some fantastic tutors over the years.
I also want to build the foundations to a network, as it will be crucial to gaining future employment opportunities. I also want to make some great friendships with people in my field of work.
Option 1: BBC UX Trainee Scheme
June 1st is the date I have written in my diary. I will be applying for this scheme to begin in January 2022. Once I have finished the scheme, I would automatically be transferred to the BBC UX&D team permanently. This journey is in my career roadmap and is displayed in yellow and orange.
Option 2: Bolser
Bolser are a design agency that is more friendly for people starting out, or at least it seems that way. They like to nurture talent and look after them with perks, such as the training and personal development plan.
This is certainly something I have looked at and considered carefully. Perks such as the Thai massages also show that they truly care about their staff members. Life is stressful, and I certainly would benefit from this as I can become stressed a lot of the time due to my caring nature.
Option 3: Perfect Storm
Perfect Storm is a place that would be the least realistic in terms of options, however I am going to try regardless. Even if I don’t get any opportunities to work for/with them, that doesn’t mean I can’t in the future. I will see what they say in the near future and who knows, I could be working for them sooner than I think.

Blank Space - Chapter 7
Part 6
———————
Screaming, crying, perfect storms, I can make all the tables turn
Rose garden filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like "Oh my God, who is she?"
I get drunk on jealousy
But you'll come back each time you leave
'Cause, darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream
“Naah, I’m not going tonight.”
Jinki balanced his phone between his ear and shoulder while restarting the laptop in front of him.
“But you have skipped lots of gigs lately! That’s not fair.”
Taemin groans from the other side, anyone can tell he’s more than annoyed by his voice.
“How come it’s not fair? It’s not like I got paid doing nothing.”
“Mom said we shouldn’t count our good deeds but my dear brother, I got you famous. Remember?”
“Tell me once again, so you meant I should help myself for something I didn’t ask for? Do I look like God or what? It’s not my choice that I appeared charming to those people.”
Taemin snorts, “Wow. Look how cocky you are now.”
“I know right?” Jinki sure knows how to tease his brother.
“Come on, Jinki! You cannot do this to me. This supposed to be done by two people, not a lone troop!”
“Since when you got fancy words from your mouth? You may start writing your own music, baby brother!”
“Screw you and your girl!”
“Hey! Leave her alone! She has nothing to do with anything!”
“As if,” Taemin scoffed and kicked the foot of his bed, and thank God he wears his boots because the sound is not pretty, “You’ve been away from home more than three days. Everyone knows you will get it right away that you’re with her. I probably should tell Mom to hire a wedding planner as soon as possible.”
“The hell with you, Lee Taemin! I’m struggling to get my work done here and you’re out of the lash spreading some cheap rumor, does that sound supportive?”
Satisfied with his little revenge, Taemin’s ready to cut the call.
“Gotta go! I have no time for traitor! When I make it to place record with Minho, you will never get an autograph from me!”
Jinki cracks when he had no chance to say anything after Taemin left the line hanging on the other side.
“What happened?” Gwiboon asks when she returned from the bathroom.
“Taemin is such a little girl sometimes,” Jinki turned his head to the side and almost got a heart attack when he saw Gwiboon only wrapped with towel, thighs covered not even half, his mouth went dry with the view, “Ermm, can you not? How am I suppose to do if you.. you know, dress like that?”
She couldn’t believe what she just heard, “What do you expect from someone got off the bathroom? I just finished shower, not going to attend a banquet! You and you uncontrollable desire can be so handful sometime!”
When she walked across the room as if nothing happened, Jinki is more than convinced that the heat crept up his face is not because of room’s temperature. He shakes his head lightly, gave up with the circumstance, it’s Gwiboon’s room anyway.
Jinki camped there since four days ago. Initially, to finish some drawings since he needs to submit some draft by the beginning of next week. Initially. But what can he do when he only have limited space, 28 square meter to be exact, with the prettiest girl he ever encountered in his life who turned out having quite strange habit – if he might say – to take of her pants whenever she reached her room. However, this time he’s lucky enough to survive the trial. The other day when he sneaked inside her room after bribing the guard downstairs, Gwiboon open the door smiling so wide with oversized worn out t-shirt one sleeve fell of the shoulder showing perfect skin on it. The second she hugged him, he knew there’s nothing under that blessed piece of clothes.
Usually, Jinki will lock himself inside his room or move to the studio at the left wing at the campus which known to be a public hotel for the last year students. But lately, the studio is too crowded. Plus, Jonghyun will be there. Doesn’t matter how much he wants to resolve the cold treatment Jonghyun gave him since he found Jinki’s been going out with Gwiboon, the words just didn’t roll off his mouth and the urge to hide whenever Jonghyun in his sight is slightly bigger than his guts.
To think about it, it’s not Jonghyun’s fault to come out cold. Jinki’s the one who avoid him at the first time and somehow just lost his track on the way. On the other hand, as the nature of Kim Jonghyun, he doesn’t really care about his sister’s affair. Well, not that he wanted people to see it, though.
“Taemin’s okay? It’s been a while I didn’t see him. I think since he started to take the part time job as junior graphic designer at that lifestyle magazine.”
“Yeah, he’s barely home these days my Mom started to think to cross his name of her will. Tonight he has a gig, and he asked me to go with him.”
“So?”
Jinki looked to Gwiboon’s direction, her eyes saying why-you’re-still-here-then. He stretched his back a little bit, “I love singing but Taemin always loves it more. I used to go on the stage with him because he was scared. So I encourage him and offered to accompany him on some gigs. Now that he found his way, I don’t think he needs me anymore. Or maybe I’m just lazy.”
“So?" she repeated her word, "If I were you, I’d be so stressed if I stayed inside the house hours and hours without any break.”
She casually slips her panties whilst, judged by the tremble on his jaw, Jinki tried so hard tune down his heart beating, “Of course I get stressed. But going out there with my mind kept telling me that I still have so much to do make me even more stressed.”
Gwiboon walked closer to him, messed with his hair and kissed his side, “You should just go. Take a breath a bit.”
“By any chance, are you kicking me out?”
Contrary with her nice intention, Jinki’s voice raised from what it supposed to be. Gwiboon stoned on her ankles, her arms hung on the air for seconds before pushed down the big t-shirt and peeled the towel from her skin.
“Excuse me? I just said go out there for two or three hours, take some fresh air, it won’t hurt. You can go back whenever you want. I know you are a hard worker but that’s not how you do it. Since yesterday you’ve been staring on that screen not drawing any other line than two boxes on the left.”
When talking about details, Gwiboon is the best. And used to be Jinki’s major stalker, she owned a skill for collecting clues, information, and evidence with single glance only.
“Besides, I need to prepare the layout of the catalog for the fashion week. This room will turn into a sunken ship when I started to spread all those mock up dress. And I will have no more extra hand to cheer you up while your photoshop crashed for the nth time.”
Jinki let out bitter chuckles, “Wait, wait. Am I disturbing you?”
“Oh, here we go again. Don’t you get it? I am the one who afraid will disturb you with my works. I cannot use the studio because the first years are currently using it exclusively to prepare their class assessment. We are very busy and tensed with our projects, one of us should spare some common sense, and for this time I am volunteering myself to remind you that you’re too exhausted already.”
The dejected look on his face tells her that none of her words are taken.
“Don’t humor me, Gwiboon, you know it’s useless. You can just say that you want me to leave, I have no problem with that. But listened to you drive me out this way, doesn’t help. At all. What’s with the purposely soft tones? I’m not a baby who will easily get deceived with your lure.”
The second he finished his word, he mentally slit his throat for saying some stupid stuffs to Gwiboon. This must be nicotine deprivation, Jinki thought. The more he spent his time with Gwiboon, the more he didn’t smoke. She confiscated his cigarette right away whenever that thing appeared before them. For his own good, she said.
“Are you on your period or what? Or you just forgot to tell me that you are excessively sensitive over tiny things?”
Jinki rises from the small couch near the window where Gwiboon set up there to make second working space if her desk was too boring, collects his other belonging and shoved his laptop to his backpack.
“I had a feud with my best friend for nothing then, huh?”
“Come again?”
“Nothing.”
She grabbed his chin, forcing his eyes to be on the same level with her. She doesn’t look pleased at all.
“It’s your choice to stay or leave, Lee Jinki. I never once give you an order to detach yourself from your brother. OR MY BROTHER. It’s your damn choice!”
He removed her hand carefully from his face. As much as he mad at her right now, he doesn’t want to harm Gwiboon, “You already know what I said, huh? Why bother asking me then?”
She bites her inner cheek to calm her down before exploded into some mess.
“Are we having our first fight? Because if it’s so, I’m not. Something must be wrong with you. I just suggested you to take a break and you’re offended out of nowhere? What the hell!”
“Suggested? Seriously? This what you called suggestion? Pushing me away once you got bored on me so you can.. I don’t know.. maybe hangout with some random dude you like the usual infamous Kim Gwiboon? Do I look like fucking spare-part for you?”
Restless with the atmosphere, he accused her for something which actually only happened in his mind due to his own paranoia. It’s not like Gwiboon uncomfortable with his presence so close to her. The truth is, it was the first for Gwiboon, having someone sharing the same air under her roof more than 24 hours besides Jonghyun. Not even Minho. Before this, Jinki only spent the night and went back to his sanctuary in the morning for the next two or three days before his voice greeted her again on the phone or the door of her studio. It feels new. Feels a little bit foreign.
And beyond that, Gwiboon had been skipping her bistro duty for some days. Her father started to interrogate her and she ran out of excuses already.
“Why you always turn everything into some scenario that I’m a whore who supposed to be very guilty by your denunciation and you're the poor man who made terrible mistake by being with me?”
Jinki's heart flopped to the end of his abdomen, which at this moment seems bottomless. She's not crying. Unlike the first time he accused her of doing some shit. But the torn eyes stared sternly to his own tells him everything more than she would say by words.
“Tell me what my fault is for you always suspect me doing something behind your back.”
Gwiboon has a trust issue. However, apparently, Jinki has bigger one. He didn’t mean to say say something hurtful. It’s his automatic self-defense whenever he felt insecure, which he hopes he never had intention to ever do that. Seeing how it goes right now, it’s more like a boomerang instead of a shield.
“Shit.”
He unconsciously took a pack of cigarette on his jacket pocket and light it up right away while he still gathering his stuff. And Gwiboon is not pleased with the view, but this time she restrained her hands to snatch it away.
“You think you’re allowed to smoke here?”
“Some douchebags might as well smoked on those countless nights, am I right?”
“Just leave when you finished writing the novel inside your head.”
Once again, she didn’t cry. She just left Jinki standing awkwardly there and rushed to the bathroom before she slammed the door so hard, Jinki can feel soft wind sweep his cheek when it swung closed.
He wanted to leave, but he just can’t. So he marches to the bathroom door and knocked it with all his might.
“Gwiboon, I’m so sorry. I’m really sorry.”
He realized he crossed the line, but for Gwiboon is way too late. She’s not the nicest girl in the world, she knew that. But it doesn’t give him right to judge her for whatever seemed favorable to him at the moment.
Gwiboon promised herself not to cry again over a man. But Lee Jinki seems to be an exception. When she heard light steps leaving the room, she melts down on the cold tiled floor.
***
“Kim Gwiboon!”
She adjusted the silk and put the last pin on the tall model in front of her before stepped back and observed the model’s waist line. The model turns around when she asked, but when she faced her again, something’s still off and she can only shake her head in disappointment.
“Yaa! Kim Gwiboon!”
She let out subtle growl and tells the model to have fifteen minutes break.
“This hall is exclusive for the fashion design department, you ogre!”
“I am part of the lighting design! That makes me 100% allowed around here!”
She rolled her eyes out of habit, “Can you see I’m busy?”
“You’re not the only one!” Minho flails a piece of paper in front of her face, “You got two hours. Maximum two and half.”
She scanned the paper and got blood rushed to her head, “Are you guys out of your mind? How can I get only two hours?”
“Your girls are going to walk no more than one hour!”
“But to make a perfect one hour walk you need lots of time of rehearsing! You think it’s easy to walk down the stage while hundreds eyes anchored to you ready to scream out tiny mistake you accidently made? You people are so shallow!”
Minho sighed, as if knowing this is exactly what would happen, “Don’t throw your tantrum on me! I just delivered lighting schedule.”
“Oh now you turned into a messenger after some important lighting designer is not giving you sort of privilege you wanted?” Gwiboon jumped of the stage to be on the same eye level with her best friend, more than five years he knows him, he still awed by her ability to jump and run on heels, “Who is in charge with this shit? I need at least one whole night to check everything, Mangoooo.”
Embarrassed by the nickname he raised his hand right away, “I got you a whole night but it can only be done on Wednesday.”
“I’ll take Wednesday! I can finish everything this Sunday! Or even Saturday! On Monday and Tuesday it would be only the final touch.”
“Wednesday? What about your bistro duty?”
Obvious frown appeared on her pale face, Minho really wants to help but he has no idea what he should do.
“Gwiboon?”
“I’ll take Wednesday! I’m taking double shift this weekend.”
Saturday and Sunday supposed to be her quality control day, Minho knows it very well, “Are you in your right mind? That won’t do. I know your tailor schedule. You need to asses bunch of sample those days!”
“Let me take care of myself. All I need from you is make the whole Wednesday for me and my crew. Exclusively. Can you do that?”
Minho can only sighed, he took out a pen and scribbled something on his notepad, “Remind me to send you the loading’s rundown tomorrow night.”
“You’re the best!”
And Gwiboon just flew back to her station leaving Minho with his mixed feeling.
***
“One salmon and one lamb for the table 5! Two pouched pear for table 18! Last one!”
“Thank God.”
Gwiboon wiped her forehead and headed back to her station. Though the bistro belongs to her father, she’s still under the sous chef – sous chef’s assistant as he introduced her for the first time – making her jam-packed with rage toward the way of her father’s thinking. It’s Friday night, all tables are booked and orders keep coming to the kitchen, leaving her to hours without even rest her finger down. She had been purposely avoiding weekend previously. However, since the next two weeks she wouldn’t be able to do her duty, the schedule needs to be rearranged. And it costs her two cuts on her finger and one dessert plate smashed to the ground.
The head chef’s clearly not happy with that.
“Kim Gwiboon, can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Yes, Chef!”
She immediately entailed him to the vegetable’s stockroom.
“Are you okay?”
He asked once the door completely shut behind her.
“Of course, Chef. I’m just tired.”
“You sure?” she looked at her left hand with two fingers wrapped in rubber protector, “I don’t care what’s your father intention suddenly putting you here. What I care is all my employees are present 100%. And you, my little friend, no matter how you hate this, you never disappointed me before. You worked hard like a horse. Well, at least before tonight.”
“I’m sorry, Chef.”
“I remembered thirteen years ago you wore that apron which too big for you that time, it looked like a dress instead. You were running around the kitchen helping me carrying the bell peppers. I wonder where that little girl had gone.”
She’s completely not aware where this conversation is going to end and decided not to say anything until the man before her asking her opinion.
“The point is, Gwiboon,” somehow he seemed able to catch the confusion roaming the air, “Don’t force yourself. I know this is like volunteer work for you. I know I cannot help but asking you to keep attending your schedule. But if you need a break while on duty, asked. We’re in this kitchen may not your preferable family. But we’re a family here. We’re a team. And lesson number one, team always got your back.”
Funny how some people that she supposed to be her least favorite person turned out so much better than some people bonded by blood. Turned out, not everyone in this world had heart and head as tiny as sesame seed. Overwhelmed with so much compassion she thought she doesn’t deserve, small rivers ran down her cheeks instinctively.
“Take your time as much as you want. We’re closing the kitchen in five minutes, so don’t you worry, kid.”
Gwiboon can only nod weakly when he tapped her shoulder lightly while passing her. Once the door closed again, she moved to the stool in the corner and drown her face in both hands. Shoulder shaking hard indicating how bad she breaks down even she didn’t make any voice.
It’s been ten days she hasn’t heard anything from Jinki. Every single night passed with the longing to reach the phone and dial his number buried among her doubts and anxiety. Whenever she found her hand stretching to the side of her night desk, she convinced herself not to be a fool for Jinki left that night by his own will. She didn’t kick him out. She didn’t push him away. And history told her not to bother begging people coming back to her pathetic life.
Presumably life is a fast food restaurant and they order the same happy meal, in his room, Jinki sit on his mattress, rejecting Jonghyun who two days ago started talking to him again as if nothing ever happened between them and his invitation to become his wingman, both knees flushed to his chest while phone laid in front of his feet, inviting him to grab it in any second.
Since the first step Jinki made outside Gwiboon’s door that night, he’d been walking on earth with guilty mocking him on both sides of his head. He wanted to run back upstairs once he reached the ground floor of Gwiboon’s building. However the fear of being really chased away after his stupid mistake took over everything.
He wanted to apologize, told her he’s sorry and beg her not to leave him but then reality knocked him out. Who do you think you are, Lee Jinki? They never define what they are. Never labeling what kind of the relationship they’re having. In Jinki’s mind, he has no right to asking Gwiboon to forgive him. Supposed it would be the easiest thing to do to someone he cares a lot. Who knows the hardest thing in the world is realizing you hurt them even if you kept telling yourself you didn’t mean it?
Jinki pressed the home button of his phone. The screen tells him the day will soon turn Saturday. After five minutes contemplating if it’s polite to visit someone’s house in such hour, he put his jeans haphazardly. Snatching his jacket and key’s car from his desk, he dashed out his room almost like lightning.
***
‘Remember, Kim Gwiboon. You’re more than welcome here. If you had something in mind, let me know. I cannot lie to your father and cover your absence but as long as you’re in my kitchen, both my ears are open to everything you want to say.’
The words from the head chef rings beautifully inside her mind. The first time she saw him more than decade ago, she knew already that he is a very kind person despite his harsh words while on duty. If only she didn’t fall in love to fashion first, she must be willingly to be taken under his wing in his father’s bistro.
“Sir, take the left street, please. There’s a new small bar at front, they occupied more than half of the street every Friday and Saturday.”
Without saying anything, the taxi driver headed to the left as instructed. She found out she’s not in her right mind she might kill herself on the way if she insisted to drive back home. Gwiboon decided to leave her car at back of the bistro since she will be back again on Sunday anyway. And she can always take the bus or taxi to visit her tailor’s place tomorrow. Well, technically today since it’s almost one in the morning.
Tomorrow, tomorrow might be the last time she will ever visit her tailor again. Tomorrow might be the last time she can joke around with her, share some latest gossip, and sketch ideas together and argue which color or type of fabric they can use for their next collaboration. She’s a married woman with one son, twelve years older than Gwiboon but in her she found her best friend. Her girl best friend she never had since the other girls at the university only see her as a competitor. She decides she will tell Amber she's going to move soon after she finished this semester. It will be hard but her grandmother will be sad if she kept weeping like any other day.
"We’re here, Miss.”
“Uh, right, sorry,” she was drowning in her thought, didn’t realize the car has stopped five minutes ago, “Here. Thank you so much, drive safely, Sir.”
She went out the taxi hesitantly for being at her own house is the last thing she wants now. However, too tired to even mentally curse herself, she didn’t even realize there’s another sound of car’s door being slammed.
“Kim Gwiboon.”
She’s about to pushed the gate when a voice recites her name almost inaudible but beautifully. A voice she knew by heart. A voice she missed the most. Timidly, she turned herself to the source, almost afraid she’s still dreaming in a short nap during the ride home. But he’s there, standing weakly next to his car, losing his strong presence which Gwiboon fell for the very first time they met.
She wants to throw her shoes to him for what he said to her the last day she saw his face. She wants to bust his nose with her purse for what he did to her. Those desires nevertheless left her soul instantly when she found his face looked as awful as hers and a pair of eyes mirroring her own sadness.
Without ado, she sprinted to his spot and threw herself on his chest which the latter response by wrapping her weary figure with his arms. His heart shrunk when he felt tears seeping through the thin material of his t-shirt, making him tighten his embrace straightaway. Without her heels, Jinki can bury his nose on the top of her head and breathe in her trademark vanilla scent as much as he want, in substitute for the past days it was missing from his life.
They stay chest to chest for the longest time, indulged each other presence, sharing the warmth left on their skin in the coldness of the night, letting their hearts do the talk.
Jinki couldn’t help but break the silent first.
“I’m sorry, Baby..”
This time, it’s Gwiboon’s turn to tighten her embrace.

The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery By Graeme Base
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
It’s not related to writing or illustrating in any way ... my wife and I recently bought some reusable produce bags to replace the soft little plastic bags you use at the shops to put fruit or veggies in. They’re made from recycled plastic bottles too so they’re extra good for the environment. We also bought some bulk produce bags so we can go to our local whole food shop and buy bulk of rice, oats and other things we’d usually have to buy in little plastic bags at the supermarket. It’s reduced our plastic consumption A LOT and that’s making us feel a bit better about our impact on the environment.
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
I first submitted illustration samples to publishers when I was around 20 years old. I didn’t get any invitations to illustrate books back then; my work wasn’t up to a professional standard yet, and I wasn’t ready mentally or emotionally either. But I did have one publisher who liked one of the images I’d pulled together, and they said they’d keep it on file. Nothing ever came of it, but that one little bit of encouragement was enough for me to keep going.
I was working on a picture book idea around that time too; I had character designs and a theme … but the story wasn’t working. 7 years later, I got my first publishing contract. The story had the same theme as the one I’d been working on way back when, and my old character design was definitely applicable. In fact a whole bunch of different little sketches that I’d just been doing for fun ended up finding their way into that first book. It was as if I had been working towards that first published book without knowing it.
Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?
There’s one that’s (supposedly) from Confucius that I’ve had written on a post-it on my computer for a long time: “Man on hill with mouth open wait long time for roast duck to drop in.”
What is one of the best investment in a writing resource you’ve ever made?
It was an illustrating resource, and it was my first graphics tablet: a Wacom intuos 3. I bought it back in 2006 and it served me well for a decade of making illustrations; I illustrated my first four books with it. It still works, too!
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
I’ve collected the ticket stub from every movie I’ve seen since 1994. The first in the pile is Independence Day, which I saw with some high school classmates after class one day.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
I had a near-death experience in 2016; I was in a major car accident. It could have gone really badly but somehow I emerged unscathed. That gave me a clear sense of my own mortality for the first time, and has changed the way I look at my life and work immensely. I recommend a non-injurious near-death experience to everyone! I also got married and had a son in the last three years, so that’s changed my outlook again.
What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore?
You don’t need to submit things straight away. You don’t need to get published straight away, and you shouldn’t expect to. It’s important that you get knocked back a few times. It’s extremely likely you’ll get knocked back a lot of times. The knockbacks and the constructive criticism will help you develop your craft and get your work up to a publishable standard. Take on the feedback that you truly feels rings true (because sometimes you will get positive constructive criticism from people who really get what you’re trying to do and see the potential in it); ignore the feedback that doesn’t really click or seems petty or mean (because sometimes you will get discouraging feedback from people who just don’t get what you’re trying to do). For this to work though, you need to be willing to take on feedback in the first place, and that’s absolutely vital. I see lots of people who are overconfident in their ability, and react very badly when given feedback that contradicts that belief. You need to be confident in your ability to put in the work of course, but also humble, as you have a lot to learn, and you will never stop learning.
What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession often?
Sometimes people say, submit your manuscript to one publisher at a time. That’s terrible advice! You will be waiting months and months to hear back from a publisher, if you ever hear back from them at all. The better thing to do is send to multiple publishers at once, and mention in your cover letter that this is what you've done. That way all the publishers know what the deal is, and they can contact you to check if the manuscript is still available before they start putting time and effort into reading it and considering it at their meetings in-house.
In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
Having a toddler means my wife and I have very little free time, so we’ve both had to become better at saying no to things; I think I still need to learn the lesson on a regular basis! It’s always a balancing act between work and home life; and within work, there’s a balance between spending time on the next book/s, spending time doing paid talks and workshops; getting admin done; and doing the other unpaid things that pop up (volunteer opportunities, media and promotional events, etc).
What marketing tactics should authors avoid?
On social media, don’t just talk about yourself all the time, and don’t just talk about your book all the time. You can share things that interest you, share reviews of what you’re reading, even just share a photo of your dog - social media is about being social, not just hammering people with advertisements and saying ME ME ME.
What new realizations and/or approaches have helped you achieve your goals?
I’ve gotten better at time management and networking, and I’m learning to draw quicker too; these are things that I guess anyone develops with practice. It’s meant I’ve been able to work on more projects at once, though I definitely bit off more than I could chew this year, so I’ve also realised that there’s a limit to how many goals one can realistically work towards at any one time. This year I’m illustrating three middle grade novels (the first is called Toffle Towers: Fully Booked, written by Tim Harris); I’ve also illustrated the follow-up picture book to My Dead Bunny, which will be out in 2020; I’m also working on a bunch of freelance jobs, and starting another graphic novel and developing some picture book ideas. So it’s all go at the moment.
I’m also finding that the sleep deprivation of having a toddler is really affecting everything in my life - my immune system, my energy levels, and of course my mental health and my work - EVERYTHING. So I’m becoming more health conscious, and realising I have to set aside time for naps, exercise, and just plain old downtime. If you don’t make time for rest and exercise then you’ll have to make time for ill health later.
When you feel overwhelmed or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
Procrastinate. But I’m getting better at recognising when I’m in this state and I step away from the desk and do something else. That might be some deep breathing or some yoga stretches, or some mindless chores around the house.
Sometimes I’m overwhelmed because there’s too many things to do, so I’ll make a list. I’ll look at all the tasks and the time I have, and I’ll prioritise what needs to happen and when. Once I have a plan then I feel more in control and can calm down a bit - then I can get on with each task in turn.
Any other tips?

SUMMARY In a secret military laboratory operating under the guise of a pesticide manufacturer, there is an outbreak of a virulent bacteria. During routine work a sealed tube is broken, releasing the secret biological weapon. Where upon detecting the release of the agent, one of the plant’s security officers activate “Protocol One,” a procedure sealing all of the workers inside from the outside world and they are left to wait out the deadly effects. A local County Sheriff whose pregnant wife, the security officer, is trapped inside, and with the help of a past employee who is a known alcoholic, must fight through a government agency and the chemically affected workers to find his wife and put a stop to the spread of the lethal weapon. The former employee had started creating an antidote to the weapon, which the sheriff and his wife create and deploy.
DEVELOPMENT Bloom’s story is a bit more complex, Twelve years ago, while a 19-year-old student at the University of California, he happened to sign on as a production assistant on an obscure project directed by an unknown named George Lucas. It was American Graffiti. “I kept an eye on the cars, Bloom recalls with a smile. Now as sole producer, Bloom finally has some wheels of his own, and if a $7 million thriller.
“A cross between “The China Syndrome (1979)” and “Night of the Living Dead (1968)” said producer Jim Bloom of WARNING SIGN, to be released by 20th Century-Fox on August 23. Written by the filmmaking duo of Matthew Robbins and Hal Barwood, who last collaborated on DRAGONSLAYER. the story deals with the frightening implications of scientists using gene splicing techniques in an attempt to develop new forms of germ warfare.
While Bloom admits its similarity to many films, he denies that the germ warfare thriller Andromeda Strain deserves a place on that list.
“Although I am a great fan of director Robert Wise, on that project, he made the design an equal star to the actors. I found the treatment to be rather dry and emotionless, Bloom suggests. “In this movie, the laboratory is secondary to what’s happening. The primary concern is what’s happening to the people.”
Like The China Syndrome, Bloom admits in a less lighthearted vein, the possibilities of life mirroring art with extremely hazardous results also exists. That’s one reason he and Barwood seek to label the film as a “high-tech thriller” rather than science fiction. Though Barwood does have a strong background in the sciences, the filmmakers stress that the microbes are not the message.
“Our purpose is not to educate the community about genetic engineering,” Bloom contends. “Our purpose is to make an entertaining movie.
“At the same time, we want to present intelligent subject matter. One of the complaints I have with many horror movies is that you are dealing with rather dull, boring subject matter which makes use of cheap psychological thrills to entertain you.

PRE-PRODUCTION To keep costs within the budget, interior filming was done at a vacant Junior High School in La Crescenta, California. “We saved quite a bit, because rather than building a lot of sets, we could go in and use existing rooms, walls and staircases, “revealed Bloom. “We built the main Bio Tek containment lab in the school’s gym. It all worked out very well.” Money was also saved by casting the film without expensive star names. Instead, actors with solid dramatic backgrounds were chosen. “We didn’t want star names for this picture,” said Bloom. “It’s supposed to be real, a story that could happen to anyone, and very often a star can detract from that.”
Set decorator Mickey Michaels. “Every piece is real. Even the government was drooling over this equipment.” Michaels was brought onto the project by production designer Heary Bumstead primarily due to Michaels’ connections with private sector laboratories dealing in this exclusive brand of research. “I told the companies, ‘I can’t promise about the acting or story, but all the equipment will work.” Michaels quips. “You have to make it real to make the unreal work.
Major (Yaphet Kotto) Connolly is not a bad guy.” Bloom says. “He’s sacrificing a few to save many, the same way firemen contain a fire burning out of control.” – Jim Bloom
BEHIND THE SCENES Bumstead, with 47 years of motion pictures behind him, has worked on four Alfred Hitchcock films (gamering an Oscar nomination for Vertigo) and with George Roy Hill on Slaughterhouse Five. Of this latest venture, he says, “I don’t think Mickey Michaels will ever forgive me for what I’ve put him through on this film, but his connections have made a real difference.”
One reason that Bumstead and Michaels could design the film from today’s company stockrooms and drawing boards, Bloom notes, is that Barwood and Robbins extracted the story from today’s headlines.
“This is really not a science-fiction movie, Bloom says. “It’s really a fiction piece, based on things which are very real right now. The element of science fiction is that we’re dealing in a high-tech field about which the public knows very little.
“Hal Barwood and I are both true fans of genetic engineering. I believe that the 20th century will be remembered for gene splicing-nor computers or nuclear energy.
“In fact, we are dealing with something that, in some ways, is far more terrifying than atomic weaponry-cloning toxins, which are essentially proteins, into easily catchable bacteria like E. coli. Once you start this process, it’s very difficult to create an anti-toxin. That’s what makes it so dangerous: you can not just push a button.”
Nevertheless, Bloom maintains, “We are not looking to present genetic engineering in a bad light. A hundred years from now, when people look back on this period, they’ll see it as the seed point of the genetic revolution.”
The seed point for the film, however, came when Barwood and Robbins, while researching the subject matter, discovered some data-circa World War I-on the Borna virus. “It happened in Germany, Bloom explains. “The Borna virus was very rare, and specific to horses and animals. The horses that became infected all went mad and began attacking each other the virus affects the brain’s rage center.

“That idea, coupled with the concept of developing a particular toxin for germ warfare, was the seed for this project.”
Germ Chills In the film, those within BioTek begin to go mad once they have contracted the virus, menacing cach other and the strangely immune Quinlan. A one-time history classroom displays a remnant of their handiwork, with one door chopped to pieces by an axe and the fake glass in the other shattered.
SPECIAL EFFECTS “It’s quite nice,” observes special effects supervisor Kevin Pike, who oversaw the physical effects on Starfighter thankless job since Digital Productions’ computer graphics got all the ink. “At least there’s no Digital to come in and overshadow all of our stuff,” he smiles. “There are no real major effects on this movie, but many little things.”
“I have less budget on this film than I’ve had in many, many years, production designer Bumstead acknowledges. It’s a challenge. When I heard the budget, I said, “We must find a school,’ so here we are.”
Zomble Thrills The idea of germ warfare recalls a number of films, as does the concept of dangerously enraged virus-afflicted, zombie-like humans. Harmless ultra-violet lights have been developed that, when shone into the eyes of actors wearing special contact lenses, will create an eerie purple glow. The grotesque sores will also glow, set decorator Michaels reveals.
The film has had two previews, and according to Bloom, the reaction has been good. “It’s a very esoteric film in some ways,” admitted the producer. “Some people will hear about a movie where people are getting sick inside of a gene-splicing laboratory, and won’t go near it, so it doesn’t have a broad general appeal.” That fact, combined with the change in management at Fox since the film was made. could mean an uphill struggle to get the film to its intended audience. – Jim Bloom
