What Actress Ada Ameh went through before her death

Popular Nollywood Actress, Ada Ameh has died. The actress, known for her role as Emu in Africa Magic family drama, The Johnsons, died in Warri, Delta State around 11 pm on Sunday. She was aged 48. Ameh was said to have been a guest of the owner of an oil company toyshop and his family when she suddenly collapsed. It was gathered that she was rushed to the NNPC’s hospital but passed on before they arrived the facility. She had been undergoing mental health challenges silently until she opened up about it. She got pregnant with her daughter, Aladi Godgift, at 13, due to an early exposure to sex. And On 20 October,2020, she lost that daughter (her only child) who was over 30 years old. Aladi died after an unsuccessful surgery in Abuja. The actress visited her daughter’s grave site last year to mark her one-year remembrance. She also celebrated her daughter on the latter’s posthumous birthday. Before 2020, she lost six of her siblings (three brothers and three sisters). She then started battling with depression. In March of 2022, she lost yet another sister. Recall that a few weeks ago, the actress had opened up about her mental health challenges. “Everything is going to be fine. I have an issue right now, and it’s taking my life. I will not die. We will get over it,” she had said. The actress also said that she was given a job but could not carry it out because she was undergoing mental issues. Born on 15 May, 1974 in Ajegunle, Lagos, Ameh became famous following the role of Anita she played in the movie ‘Domitilla’ in 1996. She was also recently celebrated for her comic characters especially in the series, The Johnsons. An Idoma lady, Ada Ameh had her primary and secondary education in Lagos but quit school at 14. Actress Ada Ameh has died. She died in a hospital in Delta state on Sunday, July 17. She was just 48 years old. She was said to have been a guest of an oil company's topshot and his family in Delta state when she suddenly slumped during a gathering. She was rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead. Ada lost her only child in October 2020. Only in June, she mentioned that she had been battling a mental illness. Born on May 15, 1974 in Ajegunle, Lagos, the popular actress shared a video of her eating with the family around 12:53pm on Sunday on her official Instagram page. Ameh, who played the role of Anita in the movie ‘Domitilla’ in 1996, is famous for her comic characters, especially in the series The Johnsons. Congratulations to the winner(s) of the election in Osun state, I hope it is not just the pragmatic citizens that has learnt a lesson or two about politics and how it is played.

Anyway, that's not what is on my mind this evening;

I have always been a lover of good movies, can't remember how that came to be but I guess it is partly because my parents loved movies too and fortunately,the cinema culture was still very much alive in Nigeria, Kaduna to be precise in the late 80's and early 90's. So, as a family we used to go see movies. I grew up loving good movies but not Nigerian movies though and for obvious reasons too. Anyone who understands fiction, loves and write fiction like me will understand why Nigeria movies didn't appeal to me while growing up. That changed..

The entertainment industry evolved, I know a lot of people think it sort of happened on its own,but we have government policies to thank, most Nigerians, especially the young ones don't know this but some enforcement of the broadcast of 60% local content for TV and 80% for radio aided the growth of the industry. Then content creators started churning out superb contents. Today, I stream Nigeria movies, I love our films even though we still have a long way to go compared to some others, especially Hollywood.

Despite the growth, I think we haven't done enough, we have lots of untold stories that can further improve the industry if well told. The one that always come mind for me is the story of the first plane hijack in Nigeria- April 1967, but the most sensational one for me is the October 1993 hijack by teenagers with a toy gun to protest the annulment of June 12 presidential elections. That story would make an Oscar winning movie.( Next time, when the youths say their fathers didn't have the courage to fight their oppressors, remind them among other events that Nigerian teenagers hijacked a plane in Nigeria as part of the struggle to restore the democracy we all enjoy today).

Our nollywood producers only need to look inward, we have so much untold stories that can match and even do better than Hollywood stories if well scripted and directed.
