2023 art summary, coming in fashionably late. Director's commentary under the cut:
January: I feel proud of this one, but also feel kind of sad that over the course of a whole year, that January is the artistic highlight. I had a few free days at the beginning of the year where I was alone, and got this wild drive to draw something that I very rarely, if ever, get anymore, especially for a piece that includes a background. Pessimism aside though, I'm really happy with how this came out, barring some aspects of Kanan's facial anatomy I could improve on and Ahsoka's hand (I gave up here, don't look too closely). I've had the scene in my mind for a while, and I'm glad I could finally take it on artistically.
February: Yes, technically this was published in March. As far as I can find, this is possibly the only thing I drew in February, sketches included. I published it on twitter and tumblr in Feburary, fully intending to leave it at the flats, but decided to render a bit on 03/01. On account of my literally having nothing else for the month, I let it slide. I'm also happy to have finished a piece for Seventh/Fifth, and it received pretty decent reception considering it's a bit of a rarepair.
March: I didn't do much, but I did draw Trilla, Eighth, and Reva; and the dynamic has been shamelessly influenced by To Gain The Harbor on Ao3, which has occupied my head rent-free this year.
April: I actually drew two things this month, but I chose Voe, since I always have to have my annual Voe in these, and I'm really happy with how I drew her, here. It's also unpictured due to the formatting constraints, but this one also contained one of my best Kylos.
May: Work started getting very busy here (and never really stopped), so this is where ~sketch season~ starts. I noticed that I sketched a lot of sitting and kneeling this year, which is a bit of a flex, since I've historically had trouble with that (and am still not perfect, but getting there).
June: Credits to Senshistock for the pose here, but I decided to focus back in on anatomy, which was honestly driven by my beginning to consistently exercise for the first time since college—I got a lot more in tune with the practical aspects of how my own and other bodies could move, and though a lot of my poses are static, I find that it's a pretty big influence on my art this year.
July: It's at this time that my love for Reva also turned a corner—I objectively loved her as a character from the beginning, but around this time or June is when she rocketed herself to my third-favorite (hehe) inquisitor. She really grips me as a character, and she featured pretty prominently in my art this year.
August: Was busy touching grass this month, so didn't do a ton of drawing, but did a quick sketch of a village babushka.
September: I decided to color a drawing of Samantha Trapp and Kilner from We Fix Space Junk, which has carried me through many a hard day, and while the drawing feels just a little off, I think I at least somewhat maintained my ability to color something in.
October: I decided to treat myself and buy some fancy pens, and decided on the Sarasa pens on a whim. While they haven't been the cure-all to my art block, they are so much fun to draw in, and about half my sketches from October-present have been with these. Also, Rey!
November: Reva brainrot feat. The Grand Inquisitor. A friend and I were talking over an AU where the Grand Inquisitor (as a Jedi) takes Reva on as his Padawan, and I had to draw it.
December: I sketched a fair bit this month, but decided to go with Eighth.

Note
We'll have a better idea of what to expect for s2 once June is over. Activity in Wales is ramping up next week with filming starting the week after which'll last for 2 weeks and 2 days at another location so a smaller scene. The first is probably Rook's Rest which should be the largest battle of the season. We know Lord Darry will appear in ep 2/5 according to the actor's casting profile. The Alys audition had Daemon coming back injured from some battle, possibly stone hedge. 1/2
2/2 if Lord Darry is only in those eps (his profile only says Clare Kilner as his director) we might not get the fall of KL cause he's supposed to lead Criston/Aemond towards Harrenhal/away from KL so that Daemon can escape towards KL. Either way we'll learn more the coming weeks though I doubt we'll get as many photos/videos since they're not filming in a city but what we do get should be decent cause they cant actually hide what's going on as they're out in the open and not in a closed square.
I generally agree, I think that most of the big upcoming events will be hard to hide completely so once shooting is deeper in or is near completion, it will probably be pretty clear what's happening.

This is mafia land. You’d figure that Prigozhin would’ve taken measures to get his family to safety, if he had planned this coup for some time, which some sources are claiming. He is, after all, a member of this giant organized crime gang and he knows its methodologies. Women and children are fair game to them. Torturing, raping and murdering – even women and children – is standard practice of mafia land, not only in Ukraine.

The WGA strike does not affect the filming of House of the Dragon Season 2. All the scripts were written and checked multiple times before the strike began in early May.
But there is concern that two other unions with workers in the entertainment industry may join the WGA on the picket lines.
Two other major entertainment guilds, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), also entered the summer with looming contract expiration dates. Both groups’ agreements with AMPTP, the trade association that represents the industry’s film and TV production companies, end on June 30. A lot could happen between now and then, but the situation is looking dicey.
All of that means that come July 1, the studios may be facing a double or even triple strike, in effect shutting Hollywood down completely.
The DGA rarely strikes — the last time was in 1987 — and its leadership has not called for a strike authorization vote. But its relations with the AMPTP have been trickier than usual. Negotiations began on May 10, with demands that in part mirror the WGA’s concerns.
A lot of the dispute between the creators and the trade association involves the efforts of the latter to diminish the role of the former.
The situation seemed to intensify due to an unforced error. On May 23, Warner Bros. Discovery launched Max, its newly rebranded streaming platform, which had previously been named HBO Max. Eagle-eyed observers noticed that in listed credits, the platform lumped writers, directors, producers, and so on into one category labeled “creators.” Aside from the queasy implications that the greatest works of cinema and television were just “content,” the choice on the company’s part ran afoul of hard-fought contract regulations regarding credits for artists.
It was a weird choice, and one that set blood boiling in Hollywood. The presidents of the WGA and the DGA issued a rare joint statement, with DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter noting that “The devaluation of the individual contributions of artists is a disturbing trend and the DGA will not stand for it. We intend on taking the strongest possible actions, in solidarity with the WGA, to ensure every artist receives the individual credit they deserve.”
Ultimately AMPTP would probably like to do everything with AI and pay whoever is still working for them the lowest possible wages.
This has implications for other lines of work. We should support these unions to prevent a precedent from being created and spreading to other industries.
SAG-AFTRA has scheduled a strike authorization vote for Monday June 5th. This does not mean they will necessarily strike if the vote passes. It just means that the SAG-AFTRA board can call a strike if talks with AMPTP are unproductive.
As for House of the Dragon, the vast majority of the actors are not Americans. So it's unclear whether they are members of SAG-AFTRA.
Wiki of Westeros lists five directors for HotD Season 2: Clare Kilner, Andrij Parekh, Geeta Vasant Patel, Loni Peristere, and Alan Taylor. All but Clare Kilner are Americans and are probably members of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). So a DGA strike would seem to cause a delay in production of S2. DGA has not schedul a strike vote but it has been supportive of the WGA strike.
I just checked George R.R. Martin's Not a Blog. So far he's made no comments about SAG-AFTRA or DGA except to say he's heartened by their support for the striking writers.
DGA and SAG-AFTRA would not strike until July 1st at the earliest. So there's almost an entire month for AMPTP to get serious.

New outdoor exhibition celebrates Polish life in Aberdeen
Tumblr media
The University of Aberdeen's Cruickshank Botanic Garden will host an outdoor exhibition celebrating the contribution of the Polish community to life in the city.
'Loons & Quines o'Seaton and Old Aberdeen' will demonstrate the influences and contributions made by Poles who have made Aberdeen their home over the decades.
The author and originator of the project is Marta Surowiec, an award-winning graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland who currently lives in Scotland and where she is engaged in activities for the Polish diaspora and popularizing the history, culture and national heritage of Poland.
Photographs featured in the free exhibition were taken by University of Aberdeen graduate Dorota Puszkiewicz, who completed a Master of letters Visual Culture and Film at the institution.
The outdoor exhibition is the last event of a diverse six-part Polish-Scottish Mini Festival for 2023 organised by Polish Association Aberdeen. Earlier this year they hosted indoor exhibition ‘Who Are You?’ at Trinity Centre, a 'Polish-Scottish Ceilidh' at Pittodrie Stadium together with concerts of 'Maria Peszek’, ‘New Musette Quartet’ and ‘Matthew Kilner Quartet’ and folk fusion concert with ‘Kosy’ and ‘Iona Fyfe’.
Marta said: “The exhibition represents Polish society in Aberdeen and is focused on developing the image of Poles and on promoting their integration in the community. It is the second of its kind, the first one was dedicated to Torry, and it will gradually cover all areas of Aberdeen.
“We use the outdoor exposition and the personal narratives to share the stories of how we’ve built connections with this city we now call home. To this end, each of the project’s participants chose a location that is special to them and explained why they felt a bond with this particular place. We’ve created our own map of Loons and Quines o’ Old Aberdeen and Seaton giving you the opportunity to get to know us better.”
Dorota, who took her first degree at Gray’s School of Art, said: “I am a graduate of both Aberdeen's universities and I am very pleased that the exhibition will be held at the University of Aberdeen. I hope it will serve to look at us, the Polish community as part of the Aberdeen community that has a lot to give and that positively diversifies this place.
Professor George Boyne, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, said: “We are delighted to host a second outdoor exhibition in Cruickshank Botanic Garden in collaboration with the Polish Association of Aberdeen.
“It is an important community space and, as a place of continual growth and change, it is a fitting backdrop to an event celebrating community integration.”
Mateusz Łagoda, President of the Polish Association Aberdeen added: “The Polish-Scottish Mini Festival, organised by Polish Association Aberdeen proves that building a community based on connecting very diverse cultural environments is possible.
“Many Poles have made Aberdeen their homes, we feel proud of our contribution to our granite city and proud of our identity. What is more we want to bring out a festival that celebrates Aberdeen as our city of choice so that our friends, neighbours and work colleagues can understand a different culture and in addition to this people from the other parts of the country will visit to see our events.”
'Loons & Quines o'Seaton and Old Aberdeen' will open on Sunday 16 April and will run until the end of June.

Annual student art exhibition is going virtual | Sarnia This Week
Tumblr media
Artwork from some of Lambton County’s up-and-coming young creators will be displayed online from May 10 to June 15, as Gallery in the Grove’s popular annual Lambton County Student Art Show goes virtual because of the ongoing pandemic.
Featuring over 58 pieces of student art– ranging from acrylic paintings to ceramic figures to mixed media art – made from Lambton County high school students from grades nine to twelve attending Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School, Great Lakes Secondary School, Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Patrick’s Catholic High School, this year’s virtual exhibition won’t have the same feel as previous years, said the gallery’s Gwen Moore, but it will continue the gallery’s tradition of showcasing the area’s best and brightest young artists.
“This is always a very popular exhibition at the gallery,” Moore said. “We always receive a wide range of work in different mediums from some very talented students.
“We will miss the many families, who visit this exhibition in person and who are always so proud of their young artist,” she added. “We knew that we could work with the high school art teachers to create a virtual exhibition to keep this project alive.”
Northern Collegiate art teacher Ian McLean said he was relieved that, in spite of the pandemic, young artists would once again get the opportunity to exhibit their art, some of which has been greatly influenced by the lockdown.
“We are so happy to have this opportunity to showcase the artwork of Lambton County high school students during this challenging time,” he said. “The exhibit has been a long-standing tradition in our community and we are so grateful to Gallery in the Grove for providing us with this virtual venue. Some of the artworks on exhibit were done while we were still in our classrooms but many have been created by students expressing their personal views of their worlds while in isolation. The variety of artworks reflects the time we are in and our students’ perseverance and creativity at this unusual moment.”
Along with the high school student art exhibition, the gallery is also virtually showcasing artwork created by local grade six students during the months of January, February and March as part of the gallery’s long-running VALS program (Visiting Artists in Lambton Schools) as well as the juried exhibition, Faces, Spaces Places.
“We are very proud of our education mandate and that we could still commit to our supporters and our students,” said Gallery in the Grove chair Kirsten Kilner Holmes. “Our post-secondary scholarships will continue to be awarded. Students need support now more then ever. The art gallery viewing landscape may change for awhile but we will adapt and work with the city and the county to plan for appropriate protocols for a reopening when the time is right.”
Gallery in the Grove is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020 and managed to transition into a virtual gallery in March when public spaces began to close.

Four reasons why peonies are the best flowers to buy now - and how to care for them
They’re in bloom! The UK’s most-loved floral season kicks off this week with coral charm peonies – the first peony variety to blossom every spring. And Bloom & Wild have brand-new peony bouquets to celebrate the glorious occasion.
Get your peony fix before they are all gone, as they’re only around for a short but sweet time. Blooming from late April to June.
After the coral charm, peony season welcomes fluffy white peonies. As well as the ever-popular Sarah Bernhardt powder pink peonies, which last from early May through to the end of June.

Four reasons why we love peonies
Buy now: The Keira bouquet, from £45, Bloom & Wild
1. They magically change colour
As if by magic the petals of the coral charm peony change colour. This stunning variety is famous for its colour-changing petals. Watching them burst open and turn from brilliant coral to blush pink to vintage cream over the course of a few days.
2. Their spectacular bloom
A golf ball-sized bud, when ready, blossoms and opens up to three times the size. Offering a truly spectacular bloom. The size of the flower head means you don’t need many to make a real impact.
3. They’re ideal for hay fever sufferers
This much-loved flower is said to be one of the most favourable for those who suffer from pollen allergies.

4. They have a beautiful special meaning
Bloom & Wild have enlightened us. Peonies apparently symbolise good fortune (needed now more than ever) and a happy marriage – who knew?!

Coming soon: Tilly bouquet, from £38, Bloom & Wild
How to care for your peonies
With some TLC, peonies bloom in beauty for up to five days in a vase. Especially if you take care of them, as Bloom & Wild florist Harriet Perry explains…
1. Gently give them a wipe
‘Peonies can produce nectar (even when cut), which can glue the petals together, so gently wipe away any sap with a warm, damp sponge to help them open up.’
2. Choose a supportive vase
Reach for a jug or kilner jar with a narrow neck. The narrow neck will prop up the stems, allowing the owers to be fanned out for a fuller-looking display.
3. Find your flowers a good home
‘Keep peonies away from direct sunlight and radiators, as they’re dehydrating. And fruit, because some fruits release gases that can make flowers fade.’
4. Give them a trim
‘Trimming peonies (at the stem) by at least 3-5cm allows water inside to hydrate them fast. And cutting them at an angle gives as much surface area as possible to drink from. Re-trim the stems by 1cm every few days.’
5. Refresh the water
‘Flowers don’t like drinking dirty water, so it’s best to refresh the vase water every few days.’
Related: Take inspiration from on-trend wedding flowers to decorate your home
Happy Peony season everyone.
