I’m getting ready for the 50 follower post (There’s already like four parts to this but idc I love you guys so much I would do anything)
Soooo I’m taking personal requests from everyone! I already have two people asking for some funny little scenes, but I’ll take requests until June 8th! These can be for any of my Oc’s!
All I ask is that it is strictly sfw and no vore or sexual content (I’m just not that comfortable with that kind of stuff)
So if you want me to write or draw something, go ahead and ask! I just can promise that the drawings will be good TwT
Thank you for getting me to 50 followers ❤️

RQBB 2023 Writer Sign-Ups Open!
Tumblr media
[ID: Picture of a black banner with the Rusty Quill show logos and a text in white and red that reads Rusty Quill Big Bang 2023]
Writer Sign-Ups are now open for the Rusty Quill Big Bang 2023!
Please read through the information carefully to understand what will be expected of you as a participant.
The sign-up link is at the end of the post under the spoiler cut!
You do not need to have decided what you will be writing at this stage, but please consider whether the fic requirements are compatible with what you have in mind, and be sure that you can commit to contacting us on the below deadlines to share your progress (or withdraw your participation if necessary).
Schedule for 2023 (all deadlines at 23:00 BST / 5pm CDT):
Writer Sign-ups: May 8th - 14th
Check-in 1: June 11th
Full First Draft & Summary Due: July 9th
Artist Sign-ups: July 17th - 23rd
Check-in 2 & Art Draft Deadline: August 20th
Final Fic & Art Due: August 27th
Posting: August 31st - September 15th
Confirmation e-mails for sign-ups will be sent out after sign-ups close; if you have not received a confirmation by May 21, please contact us at [email protected]. We ask that you check your email (including the spam folder!) and reply so we can confirm that your registered email address is correct and you still intend to participate.
Participation Requirements:
You must choose whether to join the Big Bang as an artist or writer. You may not do both.
Writers will require an AO3 account; if you do not have an AO3 account, please request one via AO3’s login page.
If you wish to write M or E rated fics you must be aged over 18.
All participants must read and adhere to the Expected Conduct guidelines (see below).
Minimum Final Word Count: 20,000
Maximum Number of Fics per Writer/s: 1
Maximum Number of Writers per Fic (collaboration): 2
Fic Draft Requirements: At the draft deadline (July 9th), we will require a complete draft of at least 18,000 words. “Complete” means that the fic is written from start to finish with no indispensable scenes missing or left as outlines—think, “If I posted this right now, would I be happy with the story it tells?”
Ideally, you will refine and polish your draft in the remaining time, but it can also be your final draft if you prefer.
Drafts will be handed in via a form that will be sent out to you before the deadline. Drafts should be available in Google docs, or if need be in PDF format.
Summary Requirements: A form for the summary will be sent out to you before the deadline. Summaries should briefly outline the general premise, and include rating, ships, triggers and other warnings, and any other relevant details.
Eligible Fics:
Fics of any rating and with any warnings are permitted, as long as they meet the minimum word count (20,000), are centered around at least one Rusty Quill original podcast (The Magnus Archives, Rusty Quill Gaming, Stellar Firma, Inexplicables, Chapter & Multiverse, Trice Forgotten), and are tagged appropriately.
We encourage authors to take this opportunity to challenge themselves to take on a project that they might not otherwise—though please consider what is realistic in terms of the deadlines as well!
Fics must be stand-alone (requires no knowledge of previous fics to enjoy), complete (resolves all main plotlines within the story, as opposed to being part I of a trilogy, etc.), and previously unposted.
Crossovers are allowed, but the focus should be on the RQ podcast involved. For example: a fusion crossover with the Leverage Team replacing the LOLOMG in the RQG!verse would not be permitted, though the RQG characters in the Leverage!verse would be.
Please be aware that fics with obscure crossovers, common squicks, higher ratings, etc., may be more difficult to match, and thus take a little longer to get snapped up. We will do our best to find you a suitable match, though!
If you have any questions about the suitability of your fic, please contact the mods.
Matching Process:
The artist sign-up will include a list of the anonymised fic summaries. Each artist will select 3 fics which they would be interested in creating for, with additional preferences (favourite show/shows they do not follow, OTPs and NoTPs, Do Not Wants, etc.) indicated in the comment field. Mods will then match writers to artists, taking preferences into account as much as possible.
If fics are oversubscribed or if it is otherwise necessary for matching, they may be removed from the list of eligible fics before the end of artist sign-ups.
If you have an issue with your match, please let the mods know as soon as possible.
Do Not Wants:
In this event, you will have an opportunity to Do Not Want (DNW) the types of content that you do not wish to work on. Similarly, if you’ve had conflicts with certain people in the past and do not want to risk matching to them, you can include this in your sign-up or draft submission, and we will avoid matching you with them (details of these will not be shared beyond the mod team).
The mods will always account for DNWs within reason; however, attempts to manipulate matches via DNWs or otherwise acting in bad faith will result in the rejection of your sign-up or draft. We are also not private detectives, and will thus not be fielding any requests such as “do not match me with anyone who has ever drawn/written XYZ.” Please keep that in mind when considering whether this event is right for you.
Expected Conduct:
By signing up for this event, you agree to do your best to meet the deadlines. If you might need a little more time, please email the mods to explain your situation before the deadline passes. Those who miss deadlines without contacting the mods beforehand may be dropped from the event without further contact.
In order to participate in this event, you must be willing to contact the mods directly in the event that you have a question, concern, or issue with your participation (as in the deadline example above). We are happy to help participants with anything that arises, but cannot accept “telephone”-style communiques on behalf of others.
Be in regular contact with your match—if you’re going to be offline for a significant length of time, let them know. Radio silence from your match in events of this kind can be very concerning. (If you are having trouble getting in touch with your match, please contact us!)
Please take care to credit your artist/writer in your own final post.
Our Discord server has its own list of rules, which are listed within the server. If you decide to join the server, we require you to read and abide by those rules.
Be kind and courteous towards your match and fellow participants. This naturally means that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are prohibited, but even where those are not at play, you are expected to treat others with respect.
We, like Rusty Quill, have an “all headcanons are valid” policy. Harassment or mockery of those with different interpretations will not be tolerated. This does not mean you cannot discuss how you see the characters with others or that your artist/writer should not take it into account at their discretion, but insistence that any one interpretation must be adhered to is not allowed.
If you have concerns that a work or participant may be in violation of the rules, please bring it to the mods directly. Harassment of other participants (including but not limited to callout posts, name-calling, baiting, etc.), either publicly or in the Piles of Nonsense discord server, over their identities, fanworks, or headcanons will result in an instant default.
A full overview of the Guidelines can be found on our Challenge Guidelines page. We also have an FAQ.
The writer sign-up form can be found here.
Thanks for reading, and we look forward to working with you!

hi everyone! apologies for going missing for a few days! had an unexpectedly busy week.
i wanted to communicate earlier this week before the submission deadline closed that i think in order to help me decide which characters to include, and so that people will have more fun in the polls even when they're unfamiliar with characters, i'm probably only going to end up choosing characters to be in the tournament if they have some form of provided character description or character propaganda
(with exceptions maybe made if there still was a really good comic description, or if i personally know and love the character myself and feel up to writing something myself)
since i didn't communicate that before submissions were supposed to close though, i'm going to leave them open until this thursday, june 8th, at roughly 4pm EDT.
in the meantime, feel free to submit any characters you haven't already to the form! i'm going to make the character description question required from now on
and while i generally don't want character submissions through ask or tumblr submission, if you've already submitted a character but want to add character propaganda or descriptions, comic descriptions or recommendations, or images i can use in the polls, you're highly encouraged to do that to increase your characters likelihood of getting in! (or you can submit them through the form again and just note that you previously submitted them)
it depends on the time i have tonight, but i might try to compile a list of the propaganda every character has gotten so far so people can easily see if they want to add anything
i'm excited to start things soon, there's a lot of great submissions so far!

writing update
okie dokie. it's been a while since i've posted anything on here. i haven't given up, i've just been tired and burnt out because of work and as a result, working on my first draft hasn't really happened that much. but i am still writing every day, but it's more idea generation than anything else, even though i have plenty of ideas already for my story. there are just so many different angles to explore. anyways. i'm debating on moving my self-imposed deadline to a later date. i originally said i wanted to have my first draft done by my birthday (june 8th), but it seems less and less likely that that's going to happen, given that there's just over three months until that date and i can usually only secure about 30 minutes worth of writing a day, and i write first thing in the morning, so all of my morning writings are just warm-ups that don't really further my first draft very much. still not sure if i actually will push back my deadline, but it's definitely an idea that's on the table. i'm just going to keep doing my best, which admittedly doesn't feel like my best all the time, but it is still much better than just not writing anything and hating myself because of it. so, yeah, i'm still writing, it's just slow going.

Summary of May:
I don't know how this month went by so quickly. The last two weeks have just been brain static lol
Um… it looks like I spent most of the time trying to get myself to finish that bridal alt and then got stressed by other stuff happening which I have not gotten on top of or recovered from. Not a great month for studies, but I managed to get at least a little bit done and started catching back up with my Ges Draw Party videos, so… I'll take it
I am happy that I've been exercising more though! Even got one of my 'started walking in one direction and accidentally walked nine miles while exploring' days in, which is one of my all-time favourite things to do and which I really should do more of. Anything over 10k steps in one go is sooooooo good for my mental health. Also been having fun playing Ring Fit and running outside.
Plan from April:
at least one day/week playing games (not art but important to relax with) ✗ I REALLY NEED TO DO THIS BECAUSE I AM NOT GETTING ENOUGH BRAIN REST
Draw May 4th/5th pieces ✗ did May 4th, couldn't decide on what to do for May 5th + was kinda late starting
Rough (pose) sketches for all 4 FEH alt ideas and finish current one before 8th ✗ well this is fun (I do have one pose sketch and a bunch of ref for another idea though)
10x scared ✗ 6
4x 100 comp ✗ aghhh
Proko - review notes + watch shoulder critiques ✓ finally something I have done!
Proko - pecs and breasts I guess ✗ started, but decided I needed to keep going on shoulder anatomy because it's more important to understand
4x Ges Draw Party ✓ YES!!!! WIN (I did 7)
DAB Lesson 7 - 4 vehicles ✗ 2 though
1x master study - comic background or screencap study with perspective ✗ did do a Moebius flying boat study sketch though so xD
June plan:
at least one day/week playing games (not art but important to relax with) (DO THIS!!!!)
use my organisation spreadsheet consistently
meet communication deadlines
review Proko notes
3x FEH alts
10x scared (shoulder tracing)
4x 100 comp
1x FEFDraw video
4x Ges Draw Party
DAB Lesson 7 - 2 vehicles
1x master study - another Moebius ship
notes and improvements from finished stuff:
ACTIONABLES: USE PHOTO REFERENCE FOR EXPRESSIONS!!!!! JUST DO IT ✗ however have been trying to use face photos more for perspective, do hair studies ✗ doing better at this tho, decide whether majority of piece is going to be dark or light and base contrast around that ✓, draw out ribcages (+ shoulder bones) for every sketch ✓, use photo/RL reference for EVERY HAND - even doodles ✗ but most of them + using reference WAY better this month by trying to take perspective into account , do a separate detail pass the day after ‘finishing’ something ✗ too impatient lol, use photo reference for folds ✓
5MIN SCARED IDEAS: find good hair examples and trace ✗ …I might have done this? it's in my study file but might be from last month, trace torsos for gesture ✓ , review/learn leg muscles ✓, draw one hand ✓, identify fold type in clothing photos ✗
heath: bad line quality (I thickened some of the lines in a really scribbly way), armour not correctly 3d, folds don't make sense, still not sure of structure of torso
b/odhi: bad values makes it hard to look at (too much contrast), figure not conforming to perspective in places, hand is awful, doesn't look like he's sitting on the boxes because of where the horizon line is, messy/scribbly lines on the ship, ambiguous positioning of up arm vs the thing that's supposed to be to the side of it
lyon: hair is kinda clumpy in a bad way (needs flyaways or something along the length of hair sections, I think), torso anatomy nonexistent lol, I don't know if that's where ears are supposed to go
mid/een: not happy with the expressions I ended up with, m's legs look too long even though he should proportionally be ok??, lack of shoulder anatomy knowledge intersected with lack of perspective knowledge and made his arm look really weird BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY, shaky adherence to horizon line, a's far wrist is way too small, her torso is also all kinds of messed up, had trouble reconciling anime stylised face + actual real face anatomy (flat vs. planes of face), HOWEVER I think the rendering came out pretty nicely and the bow was surprisingly straightforward to draw. all the things I'm annoyed about here are, I think, the result of me hitting my skill ceiling and not knowing enough to solve problems - so I am trying to be more okay with that xD
ACTIONABLES: draw out ribcages/shoulder anatomy for every sketch, trace heads + ears for placement, study Otomo 3/4 faces, draw box in perspective + horizon line (at least H.L.) before placing characters, keep tracing shoulders
5MIN SCARED IDEAS: draw one hand, shoulder/ribcage tracing, review/learn leg muscles, draw one hand, trace heads + ears, Otomo study

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (425): Tue 16th May 2023
My first of four straight days off, the closest thing I will probably have to a proper holiday for the rest of the year. On my way downstairs to feed Lucy this morning I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and was stunned at how skinny I looked around my face. This was the proof I needed that the scale is full of shit and I am indeed losing weight. For some reason you weight less throughout the day even if you don't eat much and every time I would weigh myself after a long run on a day where I had dramatically reduced my calorific intake it would still say that I was the same weight (if not heavier) than I was the day before). However I've done some research and discovered that this can be due to a number of factors most likely water retention or the body going into famine mode. I guess that my body must be over the initial resistance that all the fitness and nutrition site warn can happen when starting a diet and the fat is now starting to burn off. I've also reached the stage in this diet where I'm now motivated to stick to it because I'm starting to both see and feel the benefits of it so I'm now more committed to finish it. With all the other hundreds of diets I've attempted over the last ten years I would give up after discovering that I hadn't shed two stone despite dieting for two whole days. This time I've managed to stick with a diet into triple digit hours and now that I see it's working I'm less likely to jack it in. At the moment of writing this I'm not feeling any cravings for unhealthy foods which is unheard of for me as normally I am thinking about my next meal during my current meal. Now that I'm starting to see what I could look like without having a belly the size of a space-hopper all those pizzas and energy drinks seem much less important. I started this challenge on May 5th and I've given myself the deadline of June 5th to get down to 12 stone but to be honest as long as I hit the target by my birthday (June 30th) or by the time Edinburgh comes around I'll be chuffed to bits. Speaking of Edinburgh I made a lost of all the Edinburgh Fringe shows I want to see this year. In addition to seeing Daniel Kitson, David O'Doherty is also doing a show on the days that I will be up for the festival so I'll have to book a ticket to see that show. There are other comedians I like at this year's Fringe who unfortunately are doing shows later than I'm going to be there, namely Stewart Lee and Reginald D Hunter. I'm also disappointed that I'm not going to be able to see Jerry Sadowitz once again since he's not on until the 23rd and I'm going up there on the 8th (though I must admit I'm tempted to book a train up there for a second trip to the Fringe just so I can see the show that got Jerry cancelled this time last year).

Phillies carry loads of ability into matchup with Braves
The Braves and Phillies will satisfy in just the NLDS immediately after a mildly unforeseen Philadelphia gain more than St. Louis within just the Wild Card Spherical. Those 2 golf equipment comprehend each individual other nicely following locking horns 19 moments in the course of the every month year, nonetheless as we realize, the playoffs deliver upon a alternative layout of sport. Let dig into the Phillies lineup.Braves heritage vs. Philadelphia inside 2022: 11-8Phillies lineup scores:BA:.253 (8th)OBP:.317 (11th)SLG:.422 (6th)wRC+: 106 (10th)HR: 205 (6th)SB: 105 (5th)K%: 22.4 (14th)BB%: 7.9 (17th)vs. LHP: 115 wRC+ (6th)vs. RHP: 102 wRC+ (12th)Lineup at a look:We understand the Phillies Really nicely, with Atlanta having 5 of the remaining 7 game titles in just September. Their lineup is headlined via a handful of sluggers within the supreme 4 areas https://www.shoptheatlanta.com/Tyler_Flowers_Jersey-62, with Kyle Schwarber top off, adopted as a result of some mixture of Rhys Hoskins, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Realmuto. All 4 of people avid gamers can and will inflict punishment if on your own create a slip-up.Nick Castellanos, even with a brutal 1st period within Philadelphia (hey, just 4 many years and $80 million in the direction of move) typically assumes the 5th destination inside of the invest in. Alec Bohm discovered his stride a little bit within the instant 50 % (103 wRC+) and is made up of been a pest. Brandon Marsh was a fantastic addition at the exchange deadline (114 wRC+) and Jean Segura is made up of by no means designed an out towards the Braves. Wel view if that vogue proceeds this 7 days. Newbie shortstop Bryson Stott is made up of superior the infield protection, though his video game is further more glove than bat at this position.X Issue: Bryce HarperIt Very straightforward. Harper, who returned in the direction of the lineup August 26, consists of decidedly not been incredibly Great considering that breaking his thumb inside June. He strike particularly.227/.325/.352 (83 wRC+) more than 151 plate appearances and is naturally not 100 %. Harper did homer within just Saturday video game in opposition to St. Louis. If he contains a huge collection in opposition to Atlanta, the Philliesprospects move up considerably. If the Braves hold him below wraps, it might be a uncomplicated sequence.Remaining Queries:Even with a terrible end in the direction of the time the Phillies almost choked a playoff place absent as the lineup went frigid within late September there are some legitimate components right here. Incorporate a highly effective https://www.shoptheatlanta.com/Matt_Olson_Jersey-79, veteran lineup with final-tier setting up pitching and a number of of tough-throwing relievers inside of the late innings, and this need to be a pleasurable collection in between 2 NL East foes who comprehend each and every other Really properly.

The Inception Big Bang is coming soon! Can you believe it's already been (practically) a year? We don't know about you guys, but we're super excited 😁 Here's what you need to know about this year's event:
What's new?
‣ This time the posting date will be on July 1st - right at the beginning of Inceptiversary, rather than the end of it. IBB will be kicking off the celebrations in good style and leaving time for participants to join other events happening later in the month.
‣ Author sign-ups this year will be limited to 18 spots - and they'll be first come, first served! This will even out the different skill groups in our fandom while keeping the event challenging and fun.
Authors, don't miss out on your spot! Save our sign-up date to the calendar and send us a message if you want to be tagged/notified when sign-ups open.
‣ Your wish is our command here at IBB and this year we'll have a discord server! We'll have a general chat for all things IBB, plus closed channels for authors and artists to share ongoing concepts and bounce ideas off of each other. The discord will be open from April 1st to July 10th and will be a fun place to hang-out with other participants, vent about the daunting deadline or look for inspo. Send us a message if you want to tagged/notified when it opens ✌🏻
‣ No website, sadly. The mod didn't renew her sexy website hosting plan with unlimited sites. The site will always be with us, though. In our hearts. Let's remember fondly it's sleek design and user friendly interface.
Tumblr media
April 1st - Discord server opens
April 8th - Sign-ups open
April 17th - 24h to sign-up reminder
April 18th - Sign-ups close
.
Window for authors to review and update their submission.
.
April 23rd - First Round of Fic Claims
April 26th - Second Round of Fic Claims
May 1st - Pairing Announced
June 1st - First Check-in
June 15th - Second Check-in
July 1st - Posting Date
July 10th - Discord server closes
Tumblr media
If you've been here in previous years, you already know this part. We haven't made changes to the guidelines this year. If it is your first IBB or if you need to remember anything, you can find the full list of guidelines here, plus some frequently asked questions.
.
And that's it for now! See you soon ❤️

so we submitted a manuscript to a journal. on may 12th we got a response saying "please make revisions. you have 6 weeks." that gives a due date of june 23rd. on june 8th we get an email saying "just a reminder, your revisions are due in 2 weeks." ok, so i guess the due date is june 22nd. today i go to submit revisions and it's like, "nope. your deadline was june 21st!"
so now we just had to send an email groveling and saying "we're so, so sorry for misunderstanding, pwease take our revisions, pwetty pwease???" even though they were clearly the ones on some weird amorphous timeline bullshit.

Zine Info and Basic Guidelines!
Hello! We wanted to give some basic information about our zine before applications open! If you have any other questions, feel free to message us here or send an email to [email protected]
 What is this zine about?
This is an 18+ Good Omens zine focused on Human AUs. That's any alternate universe where the characters are human, in whatever job or scenario you want.
Who is running this zine?
The mod team can be found listed here.
Will this be a physical zine?
The goal is for a physical zine with a digital version also available, and a potential digital-only NSFW add-on, if there is enough interest from contributors.
 Where will the money go?
Any profit will be donated to a charity to be decided by contributors.
 What’s the schedule?
Subject to change if needed, but the schedule for now is:  January 18th - Applications Open February 8th - Applications Close February 22nd - Application Results March 1st - Pitch Deadline March 29th - Check In May 3rd  - Final Submission Deadline May 24th - Pre-orders Open June 14th - Pre-orders close (All deadlines at 11.59pm EST)
What are the requirements for contributing?
If you are an artist or writer interested in human AUs, you're encouraged to apply! We ask for enough sample work that we can get a good idea of what you can do, and Good Omens works, specifically samples of human AUs, are encouraged but not required. Writing submissions should be ideally less than 2k, and stand-alone rather than chapters. We would also highly encourage applicants to have some ideas of what they would like to do for the zine (it does not have to be refined, but something more than just 'coffeeshop AU' would be ideal).
=
Basic Zine Guidelines
Works must showcase a Human AU featuring Good Omens characters.
We encourage any presentation of your characters (including but not limited to sex, gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, nationality, chronic illness and disability) to reflect the diversity of the human experience.
Works may be set in any location or era, creativity is encouraged.
All works for the print zine must be SFW only. If there is enough interest, we may offer an NSFW digital add on.
Though all Good Omens characters are welcome (and encouraged!), if Aziraphale and Crowley are presented in a romantic or sexual relationship it must only be with each other.
Art Guidelines:
New and unpublished works only
Traditional, Digital, Cosplay are all welcome - if your art is in another category, shoot us an email or explain in your application!
Our dimensions will be comic book size: 6.88 ” W x 10.5 "H with a .25 bleed area (7.13x10.75), 300 dpi, portrait or landscape orientation, CMYK preferable.
TIFF is the preferred file type for submissions.
Fic Guidelines
New and unpublished works only
2k maximum word count for the print edition of the zine.
Work must be beta read (either by a mod, another contributor, or a trusted beta reader outside of the zine)

Major character death(s).

Fics of any rating and with any warnings are permitted, as long as they meet the minimum word count (20,000), are centered around at least one Rusty Quill original podcast (The Magnus Archives, Rusty Quill Gaming, Stellar Firma, Inexplicables, Chapter & Multiverse), and are tagged appropriately.

• IJN Shinano
The Shinano was an aircraft carrier built by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during World War II, the largest such built up to that time.
One of two additional Yamato-class battleships ordered as part of the 4th Naval Armaments Supplement Program of 1939, Shinano was named after the old province of Shinano, following the Japanese ship- naming conventions for battleships. She was laid down on May 4th, 1940 at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal to a modified Yamato-class design. As with Shinano's half-sisters Yamato and Musashi, the new ship's existence was kept a closely guarded secret. A tall fence was erected on three sides of the graving dock, and those working on the conversion were confined to the yard compound. Serious punishment—up to and including death—awaited any worker who mentioned the new ship. As a result, Shinano was the only major warship built in the 20th century to have avoided being officially photographed during its construction.
In December 1941, construction on Shinano's hull was temporarily suspended to allow the IJN time to decide what to do with the ship. She was not expected to be completed until 1945, and the sinking of the British capital ships Prince of Wales and Repulse by IJN bombers had called into question the viability of battleships in the war. In the month following the disastrous loss of four fleet carriers at the June 1942 Battle of Midway, the IJN ordered the ship's unfinished hull converted into an aircraft carrier. Her hull was only 45 percent complete by that time, with structural work complete up to the lower deck and most of her machinery installed. The main deck, lower side armor, and upper side armor around the ship's magazines had been completely installed, and the forward barbettes for the main guns were also nearly finished. Shinano was designed to load and fuel her aircraft on deck where it was safer for the ship; experiences in the Battles of Midway and the Coral Sea had demonstrated that the existing doctrine of fueling and arming their aircraft below decks was a real danger to the carriers if they were attacked while doing so. Much of Shinano's hangar was left open for better ventilation, although steel shutters could close off most of the hangar sides if necessary.
The ship was originally scheduled for completion in April 1945, but construction was expedited after the defeat at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 as the IJN anticipated that the United States would now be able to bomb Japan with long-range aircraft from bases in the Mariana Islands. The builder was unable to increase the number of workers on Shinano and could not meet the new deadline of October. Even so, the pressure to finish as quickly as possible led to poor workmanship by the workforce. Shinano's launch on October 8th, 1944, with Captain Toshio Abe in command, was marred by what some considered an ill-omened accident. During the floating-out procedure, one of the caissons at the end of the dock that had not been properly ballasted with seawater unexpectedly lifted as the water rose to the level of the harbor. The sudden inrush of water into the graving dock pushed the carrier into the forward end, damaging the bow structure below the waterline and requiring repairs in drydock.
On November 19th, 1944, Shinano was formally commissioned at Yokosuka, having spent the previous two weeks fitting out and performing sea trials. Worried about her safety after a U.S. reconnaissance bomber fly-over, the Navy General Staff ordered Shinano to depart for Kure by no later than November 28th, where the remainder of her fitting-out would take place. Shinano carried six Shinyo suicide boats, and 50 Ohka suicide flying bombs; her other aircraft were not planned to come aboard until later. Her orders were to go to Kure, where she would complete fitting out and then deliver the kamikaze craft to the Philippines and Okinawa.
On November 29th, American submarine Archerfish, commanded by Commander Joseph F. Enright, picked up Shinano and her escorts on her radar and pursued them on a parallel course. Over an hour and a half earlier, Shinano had detected the submarine's radar. Normally, Shinano would have been able to outrun Archerfish, but the zig-zagging movement of the carrier and her escorts—intended to evade any American subs in the area—inadvertently turned the task group back into the sub's path on several occasions. Assuming Archerfish was being used as a decoy to lure away one of the escorts to allow additional submarines a clear shot at Shinano. He ordered his ships to turn away from the submarine with the expectation of outrunning it. the carrier was forced to reduce speed to 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph), the same speed as Archerfish, to prevent damage to the propeller shaft when a bearing overheated. At 02:56 on November 29th, Shinano turned to the southwest and headed straight for Archerfish. Eight minutes later, Archerfish turned east and submerged in preparation to attack. Enright ordered his torpedoes set for a depth of 10 feet (3.0 m) in case they ran deeper than set; he also intended to increase the chances of capsizing the ship by punching holes higher up in the hull. A few minutes later, Shinano turned south, exposing her entire side to Archerfish—a nearly ideal firing situation for a submarine.
Four torpedoes struck the Shinano. The first hit towards the stern, flooding refrigerated storage compartments and one of the empty aviation gasoline storage tanks, and killing many of the sleeping engineering personnel in the compartments above. The second hit the compartment where the starboard outboard propeller shaft entered the hull and flooded the outboard engine room. The third hit further forward, flooding the No. 3 boiler room and killing every man on watch. Structural failures caused the two adjacent boiler rooms to flood as well. The fourth flooded the starboard air compressor room, adjacent anti-aircraft gun magazines, and the No. 2 damage-control station, and ruptured the adjacent oil tank. Though severe, the damage to Shinano was at first judged to be manageable. This overconfidence pushed more water through the holes in the hull resulting in extensive flooding. Within a few minutes she was listing 10 degrees to starboard. At 10:57 Shinano finally capsized and sank stern-first. Over a thousand sailors and civilians were rescued and 1,435 were lost, including her captain. She remains the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine.

10 things finishing my 10th book taught me
Hey People of Earth!
(I cannot believe I typed the title of this post!)
Today, I’m going to be sharing 10 things finishing my 10th book taught me, which means--as of 2:30 this morning, I have finished writing my tenth novel, aka MOTH WORK. I’ve written posts like this for my 7th, 8th, and 9th novels as well!
Enjoy this note no one asked me to write but that I wrote because I was sad:
Tumblr media
I introduced this project on this blog back in June, but actually started it in the notes app of my iPhone (iconic) sometime in January of 2019. At this time, my mental health was *lackin* as I was stressed and in my final months of high school. I needed something to cheer me up, and so Moth Work became a place where I could dump my “bad writing” and also have fun. For more context, you can read more about Moth Work in my various writing updates HERE.
I didn’t intend for this project to become a novel, but thought I’d write it as a longer “for fun” story (prospective word count was 5k words). I chipped away at it for a few months, but didn’t really start picking it up as a serious project until around May/June. It was only once summer vacation hit that I, under the advice of my therapist to have a “reach goal” for the summer, decided to say fuck it!! I shall write this as a novel (prospective word count now 50k words). This novel has seen me graduate high school + almost finish my first year of university, and I’m so excited to share all the wonderful things I learned while writing it!
1. It is totally okay to take your “guilty pleasures” seriously.
I was in a mega dilemma writing this book. I’d wrapped up writing my ninth novel just after starting this project, and felt a need to write something that was more “serious”. Though I’m an advocate for writing what you want, when you want, even I struggled not to feel like I was wasting my time writing a project that didn’t have very much literary/craft merit (in my eyes, this changed eventually).
I am here to tell you--do NOT let anyone, including yourself, shame you out of writing what you like. Allow yourself to let loose and write “bad” things, and remember you don’t have to feel guilty/ashamed for writing stuff that seems “juvenile” or “bad”.
2. Processes change--embrace this.
I took about 4000 different approaches writing this book, and though I really wanted to stick to one (outlining, pantsing), eventually, I let my process be what it wanted to be. For example, I am a pantser and began this novel pantsing. Very quickly, I realized I needed an outline because I could not keep track of events (this book begins very plot-oriented). But, pre-determining events that would happen eventually stopped working as I began feeling constrained, and so I settled for outlining as I went so I could keep track of plot points.
I outlined 10 of the 15 chapters like this before I sort of... stopped doing this (though I will go back and fill it in just for future reference)! I went back to full-blown pantsing in the last four or so chapters, as what I’d planned would NOT pan out--and I think it’s so important to let your process be what it wants to be. Sometimes this book needed some planning--sometimes it really didn’t. This flexibility has really allowed me to be in touch with my projects more, and really listen to them/understand what it is they need.
3. Sometimes plans change. Don’t be afraid to follow your gut.
I did not plan for Moth Work to be a novel. But as the project developed, so did its final form. My gut was telling me what I needed to do (continue writing), and another example of this is when I sporadically made this a dual point of view book! I’ve never written a full-length dual POV manuscript, and haven’t written dual POV since I was 12, but I didn’t let that stop me from doing what I knew in my gut, was what the book needed.
I want to emphasize here--sometimes the vision you imagine changes. Allow this change to happen if you feel it’s right, even if it’s scary. I feel I’ve grown a lot as a writer by just allowing this of myself! It’s easy to beat yourself up for not following your plan, and I did this a lot. Understanding that sometimes plans turn into other plans turn into other plans etc, is the most freeing thing you can do for your writing!
4. Write what makes you happy!
This project began as a means to increase my serotonin lmaooo and I think sometimes as writers, we forget that yes, art is hard, but writing what you like can make that difficulty just a little more tolerable. This book started toiling toward disaster mode for a few chapters in the middle, and I really was not happy writing it. You can feel the difference in the chapters when I felt comfortable writing, versus when I struggled because I felt I “had to”. And so I took a step back and re-evaluated. Since this was not working/not making me happy, what would? This question solved my problems (not easily, but lead me on the right path). The artist! does not! have to! suffer!
Sometimes problems occur, and critically thinking through them is vital. I’m not saying just to do whatever every time something doesn't work because this isn’t a shortcut. However, my point is not to be afraid to change things up and write what will make you happier and help you finish the book if you feel that’s what you need. I wanted to write a cheesy romance about two boys who both need to chill, and so though I could’ve written something else, I wrote this because it genuinely made me happier! And I love that about this book!
5. Things can take longer than you expect. You’re not a bad writer because of this.
Y’ALL. I wanted to write 50k words of this book over one summer. One month! One! Month! Lots of folks can do this, but I did not! In fact, I hit 50k this month, which is half a year after I projected.
I think a lot of us constitute speed to being a good writer, and while speed and being a good writer can coexist, speed is not necessarily a determining factor in whether you can write or not! This book took me just over a year from when I started it (nine months from when I took it on as a full-time project), and while sure, I could’ve written it faster, I let it develop as it needed, and wrote it when I felt I could. I am not a professional writer with deadlines (that’s different)! While you gotta put in the time to improve, I think you also gotta look out for yourself! Use your gut, and take your time if that’s what you need!
6. Craft and play can coexist.
This took me so long to grasp, and I still struggle with this today! Craft and play can coexist. Say it with me y’all: craft and play can coexist!!
My manifesto for Moth Work initially was to have it be my dumping ground for shitty writing. While this took the pressure off initially, I then felt like I was regressing in my craft (which was untrue, I just didn’t realize it at the time). So, I decided to begin taking the craft aspect of this book very seriously, trying to write polished, delicious prose (every! time!) and the fact of the matter is that often, this did not happen.
I beat myself up over this! I was like: Rachel, 16-year-old you was pumping out better prose than this, what’s up? And I put so much pressure on myself to perfect the writing, even though this was only ever meant to be a “for funsies” project. Eventually, I came to understand that, okay, I really do want this to be a for funsies project, but I also want to enjoy re-reading it and not criticizing every aspect of it. I then began incorporating a few passes of line edits after drafting a chapter, until eventually, I stopped circling back to chapters to line-edit them altogether. You don’t have to be perfect on the first draft!
You also don’t have to sacrifice craft to have fun, just as the opposite is true. This book taught me a lot about finding this balance, something I’ve lacked in my writing process for years!
7. Your writing styles can differ from book-to book!
I couldn’t understand why my prose in this book felt “thin” (aka awful in my eyes), why the only thing I felt capable of describing was literally everything shining in some sort of way (glinting, glimmering, glowing lool) or overzealous descriptions of the moon. It was only about a month ago that I realized, after making a breakthrough with my litfic novel Houses With Teeth, that Moth Work was not sucking the life out of my prose--it was just a different book with a different style of writing.
And this makes sense! I was writing with two different characters, in two different perspectives, in a completely different POV than I’m used to writing in the long-form (third-present). Of course things were going to be different! I felt a bit silly realizing this, lol, because it felt so obvious, but I struggled with this for a long time (you can even see bits of this struggle in my video Problems I’m having with writing + solutions).
I thought I had regressed to being a bad writer because of this book, when in reality, the fault was on my inability to stop comparing a very different book to my very different past works. Sometimes you don’t even realize you’re working against yourself! Acknowledging this, and then letting it go was the best thing I did for this book and it allowed me to draft it much faster toward the end!
8. Writing is NOT linear.
I spoke about this in my Problems video, and I honestly was nervous to see how this hot take would be received. However, I was surprised to see that some folks thought this hot take was actually not a bad one, so I’m re-iterating it here!
I think, because we writers are often always practicing writing, we assume everything we write will be better than the last. Honestly, I feel like at least for me, this was my goal--to always be working linearly in terms of progress. It wasn’t until this book that I really came to realize that this is just not how writing works. The easiest way for me to compare this, also as a visual artist, is to say that sure, practice does make perfect, but I have sketches from last week that are worse than sketches I drew two years ago. Why is it that we expect writing to always be linearly better from one project to the next? My answer is that this is just not how writing works. I wrote some of my favourite paragraphs years ago, and may be embarrassed of a paragraph I write tomorrow.
I got caught up in this idealism of “I must be writing better each time I write” because I thought this was the most logical progression of my writing craft, but realizing that actually!! progress jumps around, was so important for me. Some days I’m better at writing description, some days I write dialogue worse than I did when I was fourteen! It’s okay not to always be uphill.
Y’all, if I step down a wrung on a ladder and then step up four the very next day, that’s how it’s going to be! Practice intrinsically will make you grow as a writer, but it doesn't mean everything you write has to be better than what you wrote before (though this can be the case, which is awesome). I feel like I don’t see this spoken about enough, so I do want to know if this is relevant to any of you or if this point is bologna!!!
9. The story wants what it wants.
This is heavily in line with some previous points, but is something that was driven home for me while writing this novel. If I can give one piece of advice, it would be to let the story be what it wants to be. If my story wants to be a YA fantasy trilogy, but I’m trying to force it to be a standalone pretentious character-driven coming-of-age saga (calling myself out), my writing may suffer! Of course, some writers can take control over their story and execute their initial vision perfectly! I am not! one of those! people!
I’m a firm believer that sometimes the story wants what it wants, and it’s often your best bet to follow this path. Write intuitively--if you know something feels wrong, or contrarily, feels right, follow that path.
I did not know how to end this book. I’d had an ending planned for a few months, though it eventually fell apart in the last few weeks. I didn’t know what I would do instead, but last night when I was drafting the last two chapters of the book, I felt in my gut that I was heading to the end. I wanted to stop writing for the night--I almost did, but instead, I kept at it because I knew I was on a roll toward the finish line, and I felt compelled to follow my instinct. This is how I landed at the end I wrote in, and it was a completely organic process.
Planning out your story is a great thing to do, and I’m not here to start a debate about whether plotting/pantsing is better because they’re both amazing!! But for me, it’s important to let the story breathe, and let it eventually grow into the shoes it chooses for itself. Taking a step back so I could stop trying to mould this story into a place it didn't want to be is probably the best thing I could’ve done for it because I finished the book. Any process is a good process if it gets you to the end healthily, and for me, allowing the story to be what it wanted to be and allowing it to take the lead helped me get there.
10. It’s okay to love your story.
I’m going to end this post on another hot take because it is probably what I primarily felt early this morning as I typed up the last paragraph of this book. I’m not going to lie--I cried finishing this book lol. I ached finishing this book. It *hurt* to finish this book. I didn’t want to finish this book. What I wanted to do was shut my computer, and pretend the end was not coming, and come back four months from now to finish it, maybe. I wanted to hang onto my story because it’s my story and I love it!
Y’all, this book is cringey. It’s melodramatic, juvenile in some places, comically serious in others. But it’s mine, and I love it. Sometimes I’m ashamed of the writing in this book--sometimes I think I’m getting worse. But it’s my story, and I love! it!
I think so many of us want to please other people! Or maybe that’s just me lol!! oh boy!! There were so many times I wanted to give up on this project because I thought others would find it cringey in places I too, thought were cringey, but simultaneously loved.
I’ve written for other people a lot in the past, and sometimes those ‘other people’ are just me--many critical versions of me. Don’t forget about how much you love a story (for its quirks maybe, its clichés, its “bad writing”) before you finish it. A first draft only comes once and finishing a first draft is so wonderful, and even more so when you love that story. We got enough hate y’all, lets give our stories some love.
So that’s it for this post! I still have five chapters to write writing updates for, so the party ain’t over til it’s over!!!
For my obligatory Oscar’s speech! A special thanks to @sarahkelsiwrites for reading about these trash people for five years, and for enthusiastically contributing to their trash decisions (#do it for the tea)! And for reassuring me that the prose in this book is actually not as bad as I believe because I would never have finished this book without that pep talk lol. To @imdisappointed for helping me crack some of the toughest plot problems!! You talk me out of problems and it’s magic! And to my MOM @shaelinwrites (for being my mom) and also for all the kind/insightful things you say! Y’all get me through it!!!
And of course!! I thank all of YOU for following this journey of drafting Moth Work. My community on here never fails to amaze me, and I’m a big stan of you all!! Please tag me in your stuff--I’d love to read about what you’re writing!
Here’s to finishing a book, but more importantly, to hoping I don’t make Moth Work a series lmaoo!!! *pops confetti*
