It's depressing, sometimes, knowing exactly what someone expects and wants you to be. Knowing exactly how their perception of you diverges from yourself, and feeling how effortlessly you flow into that perception likewater filling a glass mold, until it's so full and clear that the shape might as well have been you the whole time... the whole time.

I'm the perfect flirty, interesting girlfriend, who engages just right and is always excited and interested in you. I'm the hot girlboss nonbinary thirsttral who dresses crisp in all black, with heels that clack and witty remarks on their tongue and the mysterious allure of androgyny. I'm the perfect PA, hard working and quiet and efficient as machinery, who doesn't have to ask questions because they already have the answers for the next three predicted. I'm a naive little girl, just a bit out of her depth, woth the right doe eyed expression and well meaning question to get herself gently guided to where she needs to be. I'm the vaguely queer aquaintance who is still the least queer in the group, well meaning but mostly absent, here to fill in the ranks and not much more. I'm the perfect daughter you can still pretend is your daughter, who won't complain when misgendered and sooo understands how hard this is for everyone, who comes home and does the dishes and never complains about your choices once.

But I'm never... me. My messy nonbinary self. Even a feminine one. I wish at least one version of me could be masculine like pretty fairy boys are, could be strong and cool. Or at least one could be confident and comfortable and fun and funny and look the way I wish in my head. Or at least feel confident with the shape of my skin.

Nothing feels right because nothing is. I exist in the shapes between sides. I exist in the absence of everything I am, in the shades of what I am not to be.
