The 14-year-old suspect in the fatal mass shooting at a Winder, Georgia, high school has been identified as Colt Gray, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said at an afternoon news conference. The suspect is a student at Apalachee High School who will be charged with murder and will be handled as an adult as he moves through the criminal justice system, Hosey and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith added.

Two teachers and two students were killed, Hosey said. Nine other victims were taken to hospitals, according to the officials. The gunfire sent students and faculty desperately scurrying for cover as schools across the county went into lockdown and parents scrambled for information. Wednesday’s shooting is the deadliest of the 45 school shootings so far this calendar year, according to a CNN analysis. It is one of 11 school shootings with four or more deaths since 2008 when CNN first started tracking school shootings. Authorities said the first report of an active shooter came in at 10:20 a.m. ET. A school resource deputy assigned to Apalachee High confronted the shooter, who got on the ground and was taken into custody, Smith told reporters.

The witness sat next to the suspected shooter

Lyela Sayarath, 16, told CNN the alleged shooter sat next to her in an algebra class. She said he left class early, around 9:45 a.m., but didn’t take a bathroom pass. She thought he might be skipping. Toward the end of class, someone told her teacher over the loudspeaker to check their email, she said. Shortly after, Gray was outside the classroom door, which was shut, Lyela said. Another student who went to the door jumped backward when she saw he had a gun. "I guess he saw we weren’t gonna let him in,” Lyela said. “And I guess the classroom next to me, their door was open, so I think he just started shooting in the classroom.” At first, she told CNN she heard a burst of gunfire – maybe 10 to 15 shots – and then they were “kind of just Students dropped to the floor and crawled to the corner, Lyela said.

“It seemed like this wasn’t something he planned too well or that he wasn’t really strong with the gun because he didn’t try and shoot our door. Once he saw he couldn’t get in our room, he just went to the next one.”

Latest developments

The high school had received an earlier phone threat, multiple law enforcement officials told CNN. The phone call Wednesday morning warned there would be shootings at five schools, and that Apalachee would be the first. It is not known who placed the call. It was not immediately known whether the assailant had some connection with his victims, the sheriff said, though officials stressed that will be part of the investigation. Schools in Barrow County will be closed for the rest of the week.

Student texted mom: ‘I’m scared’

Erin Clark was at work Wednesday morning when she got a series of text messages from her son, a senior, who was attending class at Apalachee High School.

“School shooting.”

“I’m scared,” he wrote.

“pls” “I’m not joking,”

“I’m leaving work,” Clark replied. “I love you,” her son, Ethan Haney, 17, wrote back.

“Love you too baby,” his mom texted before racing to the high school.

Clark told CNN her son heard eight or nine gunshots before he closed his classroom door and, with the help of another classmate, moved chairs and tables to block the door.

Clark told CNN she was “absolutely terrified” when she read her son’s messages. “Just kept praying he’d stay safe,” she said.

Schools in the county went into lockdown

As emergency responders came from several counties, video from outside the school showed at least five ambulances and a large law enforcement presence at the campus, and at least one medical helicopter could be seen airlifting a patient from the scene. At the football field, where authorities had students gather, people lowered their heads and formed a prayer circle in the end zone, standing on the letters for “Apalachee” as their classmates milled around the field. All schools in the Barrow County School System, which includes the high school, were placed on lockdown and police were sent out of an abundance of caution to all district high schools, according to the sources, but there are no reports of secondary incidents or scenes. Some of the critically injured were removed by helicopter, and additional helicopters are on standby.

Atlanta Trauma Center and other hospitals take patients

Grady Health System – a Level 1 trauma center in Atlanta, about an hour's drive from Winder – received one gunshot wound victim from the incident who was transported by helicopter, a hospital spokesperson told CNN. Earlier, a source with knowledge of the situation who is not authorized to speak to the media, told CNN Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in North Georgia received two victims from the shooting. The source said one victim was an adult with a gunshot wound to the stomach and was in surgery, and another was a minor with unspecified injuries. Three gunshot victims were taken to nearby hospitals following the shooting, according to a hospital official, and five other patients reported to the hospital with symptoms related to a panic attack. Two gunshot victims were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Barrow with non-life-threatening injuries, Northeast Georgia Health System spokesperson Layne Saliba said. Four other patients came with symptoms related to panic attacks.

Another gunshot victim was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville with non-life-threatening injuries, Saliba said, and an additional patient came to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton with symptoms related to a panic attack.

Georgia governor sends prayers and says he can send resources

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has directed all available state resources to assist at the scene, he said in a statement on social media. The governor urged “all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.” President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident, the White House said, offering federal support to state and local officials.

“His administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information,” the White House said in a statement. Attorney General Merrick Garland similarly said the US Department of Justice “stands ready” to support the community after the shooting. “We are still gathering information, but the FBI and ATF are on the scene, working with state, local, and federal partners,” Garland said at a meeting of the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force.

Winder had a population of about 18,338 as of the 2020 census, according to the US Census Bureau The Barrow County School System is the 24th largest school district in the state, per the district’s website. It serves about 15,340 students, 1,932 of whom are enrolled at Apalachee High School.

Update on AB 3080 and AB 1949

AB 3080 (age verification for adult websites and online purchase of products and services not allowed for minors) and AB 1949 (prohibiting data collection on individuals less than 18 years of age) both officially have hearing dates for the California Senate Judiciary Committee.

The hearing date for these bills is scheduled to be Tuesday 07/02/2024. Which means that the deadline to turn in position letters is going to be noon one week before the hearing on 06/25/2024. It's not a lot of time from this moment, but I'm certain we can each turn one in before then

Remember that position letters should be single topic, in strict opposition of what each bill entails. Keep on topic and professional when writing them. Let us all do our best to keep these bills from leaving committee so that we don't have to fight them on the Senate floor. But let's also not stop sending correspondence to our state representatives anyway.

Remember, the jurisdiction of the Senate Judiciary Committee is as follows.

"Bills amending the Civil Code, Code of Civil Procedure, Evidence Code, Family Code, and Probate Code. Bills relating to courts, judges, and court personnel. Bills relating to liens, claims, and unclaimed property. Bills relating to privacy and consumer protection."

Edit: Was requested to add in information such as why these bills are bad and what sites could potentially be affected by these bills. So here's the explanation I gave in asks.

Why are these bills bad?

Both bills are essentially age verification requirement laws. AB 3080 explicitly, and AB 1949 implicitly.

AB 3080 strictly is calling for dangerous age verification requirements for both adult websites and any website which sells products or services which it is illegal for minors to access in California. While this may sound like a good idea on paper, it's important to keep in mind that any information that's put online is at risk of being extracted and used by bad actors like hackers. Even if there are additional requirements by the law that data be deleted after its used for its intended purpose and that it not be used to trace what websites people access. The former of which provides very little protection from people who could access the databases of identification that are used for verification, and the latter which is frankly impossible to completely enforce and could at any time reasonably be used by the government or any surveying entity to see what private citizens have been looking at since their ID would be linked to the access and not anonymized.

AB 1949 is nominally to protect children from having their data collected and sold without permission on websites. However by restricting this with an age limit it opens up similar issues wherein it could cause default requirements for age verification for any website so that they can avoid liability by users and the state.

What websites could they affect?

AB 3080, according to the bill's text, would affect websites which sells the types of items listed below

"

(b) Products or services that are illegal to sell to a minor under state law that are subject to subdivision (a) include all of the following:

(1) An aerosol container of paint that is capable of defacing property, as referenced in Section 594.1 of the Penal Code.

(2) Etching cream that is capable of defacing property, as referenced in Section 594.1 of the Penal Code.

(3) Dangerous fireworks, as referenced in Sections 12505 and 12689 of the Health and Safety Code.

(4) Tanning in an ultraviolet tanning device, as referenced in Sections 22702 and 22706 of the Business and Professions Code.

(5) Dietary supplement products containing ephedrine group alkaloids, as referenced in Section 110423.2 of the Health and Safety Code.

(6) Body branding, as referenced in Sections 119301 and 119302 of the Health and Safety Code.

(c) Products or services that are illegal to sell to a minor under state law that are subject to subdivision (a) include all of the following:

(1) Firearms or handguns, as referenced in Sections 16520, 16640, and 27505 of the Penal Code.

(2) A BB device, as referenced in Sections 16250 and 19910 of the Penal Code.

(3) Ammunition or reloaded ammunition, as referenced in Sections 16150 and 30300 of the Penal Code.

(4) Any tobacco, cigarette, cigarette papers, blunt wraps, any other preparation of tobacco, any other instrument or paraphernalia that is designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco, products prepared from tobacco, or any controlled substance, as referenced in Division 8.5 (commencing with Section 22950) of the Business and Professions Code, and Sections 308, 308.1, 308.2, and 308.3 of the Penal Code.

(5) Electronic cigarettes, as referenced in Section 119406 of the Health and Safety Code.

(6) A less lethal weapon, as referenced in Sections 16780 and 19405 of the Penal Code."

This is stated explicitly to include "internet website on which the owner of the internet website, for commercial gain, knowingly publishes sexually explicit content that, on an annual basis, exceeds one-third of the contents published on the internet website". Wherein "sexually explicit content" is defined as "visual imagery of an individual or individuals engaging in an act of masturbation, sexual intercourse, oral copulation, or other overtly sexual conduct that, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."

This would likely not include websites like AO3 or any website which displays NSFW content not in excess of 1/3 of the content on the site. Possibly not inclusive of writing because of the "visual imagery", but don't know at this time. In any case we don't want to set a precedent off of which it could springboard into non-commercial websites or any and all places with NSFW content.

AB 1949 is a lot more broad because it's about general data collection by any and all websites in which they might sell personal data collected by the website to third parties, especially if aimed specifically at minors or has a high chance of minors commonly accesses the site. But with how broad the language is I can't say there would be ANY limits to this one. So both are equally bad and would require equal attention in my opinion.

Alright alright! I hear you! Took forever to search for my old discussion about them

and at the end of the day, I just asked Yandy and Dree to hand in what we talked about. (Thank you my lovely dears, I always adore you~)

Anywho (sorry for it’s all over the place!)

So here are those headcanons!

- Courage was a street rat who earned a name for himself by using his street smarts to provide for himself. He was noticed by the royal family and initially hired to be a guard in the Castle. After learning Courage is the hero he left to travel and adventure.

- Korodai was similarly poor and orphaned but worked his way up through the Church of Hylia, not taking any serious vows but still training to be the Hyrulian equivalent of a monk who can kick ass(so like a knight for the church). He was still pretty goofy and silly though in spite of his intelligence.

- The people in the church learned he was the hero and sent him to the Royal Family where he continued his training. Korodai’s journey in “Faces of Evil” is his first official journey.

- Courage is incredibly strong, similar to Twilight except even moreso. People don’t really see this coming because of his lackadaisical and unserious nature, they don’t expect him to actually be that powerful.

- Because of his history on the streets, Courage never knew how to properly interact with nobility and royalty, which is how his “love-hate” relationship with Wisdom(his Zelda) started. He was attracted to her but she didn’t like how he had no manners and thus started the cycle.

- Both Korodai and Courage are exceptionally clever and resourceful.

Im sure Calamity/Soldier (I call him Cal) is very much the silent stalker yandere.

I feel like he can’t feel himself being able to fit in with the chain.

Because all of them are heroes, but the Master Sword doesnt even answer to him.

Or at least hasn’t said a word.

Basically all of these guys around him are accomplished but well, him? He’s not so special. The only way he knows how is to be darling's shadow.

And therefore follow them and around?

Maybe he’s learned some manners being the princess' guard, so he treats darling like royalty and their word is law hahaha.

Sage? Overprotective to the max.

If Sage is Wild but hasn’t met darling until his third adventure, I think he would be very willing to see darling as a goddess easier.

In his eyes, she’d be unlike anyone he’s ever known. This reverence might show in small ways, he’s always gentle with her, speaks to her with the utmost respect, and sometimes catches himself just watching her in quiet awe, as if he can’t believe she’s real.

Cuz Darling would be like a breath of fresh air for him since everyone around him took advantage of him or only cared about him being the hero.

he’d also have possessive streak that he keeps under tight control, but any hint of jealousy unleashes it. If he sees someone getting too close to Darling, he’d be tempted to step in immediately, but hold back with a calm, collected demeanor.

His icy gaze speaks volumes though.

Darling is worth any sacrifice, and he makes it clear that he would do anything to keep her safe, even if it means his own life. (Though (y/n) is definitely working on fixing that mentality if she is aware of it.)

Her presence alone eases the burdens he’s carried for so long, helping him feel grounded and human in a way he hasn’t experienced in years.

After years of being questioned or pushed to his limits, Sage finally finds someone whose judgment he respects without question.

If she tells him to rest or take a step back, he listens, even if every fiber of his being wants to protect her.

Though, he’s the type to stay up until she falls asleep, keeping a silent watch over her to ensure nothing can disturb her rest.

First feels like the one who’s more jaded than Legend??? Kinda?

Because compared to Legend, First canonically points out how he’s only used for convenience when he’s really needed.

Hmmm...I personal always imagine First being very soft spoken (well, when he wasn't angered to the point of raising his voice)

Not super soft spoken, not like he’s a fragile person, but very calming to hear.

And he loves every part of her, even if it pains him to see her in any negative/unhappy state.

Would he want to show her the true depth of his loyalty and love? Absolutely.

But he'd also want her comforted and happy.

If she ever drifts off to sleep in his arms, he's whispering all his words to her. All the things he'd held back on saying when she was conscious.

They'd be intense, overwhelming, very very...well...Yandere. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If she heard it, she'd definitely be frightened by the weight behind it.

But he waits until she's deeply asleep to do so. Maybe a small part of his hoping a small part of her acknowledges his words, even if he'd rather her not be aware what atrocities he'd commit in order to protect her.

First may be jaded, but he keeps his darker thoughts deeply buried. He despises anyone who threatens her happiness, his face a mask of calm while his heart seethes with unspoken rage. (You know how everyone agrees Sky has a scary face when angered? That’s First, he rivals Sky with his scariness except it’s colder.)

Behind the scenes, he’d handle any threat swiftly, never letting it reach her attention.

Shadow. He gives me vibes where he likes to cause harm for the fun of it. He enjoys causing chaos and despair and taunts people.

But he also yearns for companionship.

Shadow gets an undeniable thrill from causing chaos. He knows how to push buttons and stoke insecurities, loving the reactions he pulls from people.

But he’d be surprisingly gentle around (y/n), changing his dark sense of humor just a bit to make her smile.

When (y/n) pays attention to someone else, Shadow sulks like a petulant child. He’s prone to shooting them glares, muttering under his breath, and might even playfully (or not so playfully) trip them up just to remind her where her focus should be.

Shadow has no filter around people he doesn’t like, especially if they’re close to (y/n). His sarcasm can cut like a knife, and he won’t hesitate to call them out in the most biting way possible if he senses even a hint of a threat.

Shadow has a talent for inconveniencing others while staying just on the edge of innocence with (y/n). It could be someone’s drink spilling, their cloak tripping them up (or down a flight of stairs), or anything that paints them as awkward or foolish in front of her. He finds it hilariously satisfying.

Shadow wants to be the only one who can make (y/n) laugh, surprise her, or put a smile on her face. If someone else manages to get a genuine laugh out of her, he sees it as a challenge, scheming immediately about how he’ll one up them next time.

He’s not above showing his irritation in front of her if she’s giving too much attention to someone else. A muttered, “What, are they that funny?” or a dramatic sigh as he stands just a little too close, casting glances that all but scream “notice me instead.”

Shadow’s affection for (y/n) is one of the only things that holds him back from outright causing harm.

For years, politicians, industry groups and environmentalists have argued over which bodies of water in the United States should fall under the jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act, a sweeping law, passed in 1972, that allows the Environmental Protection Agency to limit water pollution. While there’s consensus that the law applies to major rivers and lakes, there’s debate over whether federal protections should apply elsewhere, such as to nearby wetlands or streams that go dry for part of the year.

Environmentalists favor broad protections, arguing that these other bodies of water are important; homebuilders, some industry groups and conservatives oppose what they see as regulatory overreach.

In May 2023, the Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 to restrict the scope of the Clean Water Act, with the majority ruling that the law should apply only to “relatively permanent, standing or continuously flowing bodies of water,” as well as to wetlands that have “a continuous surface connection” to those waters.

That ruling effectively ended federal protections for up to 4.9 million miles of streams that flow only when it rains, according to officials at the E.P.A., which announced in August that it would follow the court’s guidance.

These temporary streams are often overlooked since they may look like unremarkable dry ditches for much of the year, said Jud Harvey, a senior research hydrologist for the United States Geological Survey, who wrote a separate commentary on the Science study. “But when it rains,” he said, “these streams convey a substantial amount of water” that ends up in rivers and lakes.

Mr. Brinkerhoff and his colleagues identified millions of ephemeral streams across the country and used detailed modeling to estimate how much water flows through them.

In the West, ephemeral streams flow only for four to 46 days per year on average, but contribute up to 79 percent of the downstream river flow, the study found. Ephemeral streams contribute roughly 55 percent of the flow in river basins across the contiguous United States, on average.

Mr. Harvey said he was surprised by the amount of water originating from ephemeral streams. “But it is a rigorous and detailed investigation using the best available data in the United States,” he said of the study.

Because so much water passes through these streams, the study notes, it matters greatly whether or not they are polluted. Sediments or excess phosphorus from fertilizer run off on farms could accumulate in dry channels until a heavy rainstorm picks up the pollutants and washes them into larger waterways.

Mr. Brinkerhoff said that the study did not try to quantify how much pollution was actually passing through those streams. That is a subject for future research. But, he said, these streams have a large influence on water quality.

Boy, 14, arrested after school shooting in US state of Georgia

Colt Gray, 14, would face a murder charge after four people were killed and nine injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County.

The boy was arrested by two officers on campus, a US official reported. Gray will be tried as an adult. Local sheriff Jud Smith called the attack “pure evil.”

Within minutes law enforcement was on scene, as well as two school resource officers assigned to the school who immediately encountered the subject. The subject immediately surrendered. He gave up, got on the ground. And the officers took him into custody.

It turned out that the FBI questioned Gray last year after receiving anonymous reports of online threats of a school shooting, but agents did not arrest him at the time. According to the FBI, investigators visited the suspect in May 2023 and questioned him and his father about the online threats, which included pictures of guns.

The father stated that he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them. At the time, there was no probable cause for an arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state or federal levels.

One of those killed on Wednesday was 14-year-old Mason Schermerhorn. Family members posted his picture on social media after they could not find him. Teacher and coach David Phenix was wounded after being shot in the leg and hip, according to reports by his family on social media.

Georgia State Governor Brian Kemp said he was “praying for the safety of those in our classrooms” and that he was directing “all available state resources” to help. Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris called the shooting “a senseless tragedy.”

It’s just outrageous that every day in our country (…) that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether their child will come home alive. It doesn’t have to be this way.

A former prison guard trainee who executed five women inside a Florida bank almost six years ago was sentenced to death on Monday as his judge called the slayings calculated, heinous and cruel.

Zephen Xaver, 27, appeared to gulp but otherwise showed no emotion as Circuit Judge Angela Cowden pronounced the sentence at the Highlands County Courthouse in Sebring. After a two-week penalty trial, a jury in June voted 9-3 to recommend that Cowden sentence Xaver to death.

Cowden said the weeks of planning that Xaver performed before the 2019 murders at Sebring's SunTrust bank, the enormity of the crime and the fear the victims felt as they were shot greatly outweighed the two dozen mitigating factors his attorneys had presented, including his history of mental illness, his benign brain tumor and his jailhouse embrace of Christianity.

“May God have mercy on your soul,” Cowden told Xaver.

Xaver pleaded guilty last year to five counts of first-degree murder for the slayings of customer Cynthia Watson, 65; bank teller coordinator Marisol Lopez, 55; banker trainee Ana Pinon-Williams, 38; teller Debra Cook, 54; and banker Jessica Montague, 31.

At gunpoint, Xaver ordered the women to lie on the floor and then shot each the head as they begged for mercy.

Kiara Lopez told Xaver and the court that her mother Marisol had welcomed him into the bank with a smile, an act he repaid by murdering her.

“You shattered me into a million pieces," Lopez said. “I will celebrate the day you die, whenever that might be. Let it be known that you will always be a killer, a coward, a nobody and a waste of human life.”

Michael Cook, Debra's husband, also called Xaver a coward and told the judge, “I have absolutely no sympathy for him.”

Xaver’s lead public defender, Jane McNeill, had asked that Cowden spare her client, saying a life sentence would put an end to the case instead of dragging it out for a decade of appeals and possibly a retrial if the sentence is overturned.

“The only way for this matter to be brought to an end so that the families of the victims and this community is able to move forward is a life sentence,” McNeill argued. The sentence will be automatically appealed.

Under a new Florida law, death penalty sentences can be rendered by a jury vote of 8-4 rather than a unanimous recommendation. The change was adopted after the 2018 Parkland high school shooter could not be sentenced to death for murdering 17 people despite a 9-3 jury vote. McNeill called the new law unconstitutional.

Xaver moved to Sebring, a city of about 11,000, in 2018 from near South Bend, Indiana. In 2014, his high school principal contacted police after Xaver told others he was having dreams about hurting his classmates. His mother promised to get him psychological help.

He joined the Army in 2016. A former girlfriend, who met him at a mental hospital where they were patients, told police he said joining the military was a “way to kill people and get away with it.” The Army discharged him after three months. In 2017, a Michigan woman reported him after he sent her text messages suggesting he might commit “suicide by cop” or take hostages.

Despite his psychological problems and dismissal from the Army, Florida hired Xaver as a guard trainee in November 2018 at a prison near Sebring. He quit two months later, two weeks before the shootings and the day after he bought his gun.

Hours before the murders, Xaver began a long, intermittent text message conversation with a former girlfriend in Connecticut, telling her “this is the best day of my life” but refusing to say why. Fifteen minutes before the shootings, he texted her, “I’m dying today,”

Then, from the bank parking lot he texted, “I’m taking a few people with me because I’ve always wanted to kill people so I am going to try it and see how it goes. Watch for me on the news.”

I’m just your stupid little whore..” You could hear the low hum of approval he let out, and even if you hated it, the heat blooming through your veins grew, blood rushing to pound against your needy sex, “And?” You didn’t want to disappoint him, so again, you spoke, “And.. and.. I’m worthless.. ‘M only good at taking your cock..”

You were feeding into his ego, and you knew it. You could tell by the lazy trace of his hand against the growing tent in the crotch of his pants. Another hum of approval pulled from his chest, and he motioned you closer. You did as he asked, shifting forward on your knees until you were level with his spread thighs. You continued to look up at him with teary eyes, and slowly, he cradled the side of your face, fingers pressing against the meat of your cheek. HIIIII so I wrote a little something on Cassandra, just fleshing out her character a bit and giving a look into her life and stuff :3333

her life was nothing short of one big indulgement

days spent cuddled in bed, only leaving to shower and retrieve snacks. cheeses and meats and wine, going through several bottles a week while doing nothing but laying around.

she did whatever she wanted to do whenever she wanted. she didn’t let anything stop her, no responsibilities, no laws, no obligations, no nothing.

just her and her desires.

when she moved to gotham it was disgustingly different, people loudly bustling in the streets, cars driving by 15 miles above the speed limit, juds outside screaming bloody murder, it was so loud. so hard to focus when she laid down, the sounds seeping into her mind, an itch that could never be scratched. it could never be quiet, there could never be a moment of stillness that provided that relaxation that seeped deep into her stomach.

she hated the people in gotham. they were loud, rude, and obnoxious. especially the men. she hated it, she hated walking down the street and getting heckled and catcalled, where she came from women were seen as a gift, the most important of people, as they were the only ones who could beat children. they were seen as a blessing, treated with the utmost respect and compassion.

they weren’t meant to be ogled, and grabbed at by men who were full of themselves, thinking they run this town.

when she returned home she would sit down on her bed in silence, tears running down her cheeks as she stared mindlessly out the window, she felt violated when she went outside. not even by the men, but just by the utter disrespect people had for each other.

albeit she wasn’t the most respectful either, but those were her urges, her inhuman hunger. she couldn’t control that. but she always tried her hardest. why couldn’t they control themselves? why couldn’t they put at least a bit of effort to keep themselves in check.

she didn’t mean to be born this way.

that was a sentiment she shared often, as she sat in her bed, platter of meats in front of her. an overwhelming wave of guilt rushing through her like a storm. sometimes she didn’t want to hurt people, sometimes she did. this was one of those times where she didn’t, but she was hungry. she couldn’t help herself.

she hated that she was this way, but loved it at the same time. her mother always told her it was gift, that she was the chosen one, she was special. she believed it wholeheartedly. but sometimes she felt as if the gift was a curse. when she was bent over in an alleyway, her fingers deep inside the corpses stomach, clawing out whatever organ meat she could find, her face covered with the metallic liquid that spilled out of him.

the mix of his warm blood, her hot tears, and the rain that poured down on them. she felt like she was being flooded, literally and metaphorically.

when she returned home she felt out of place, her pretty delicate decor didn’t match the mess she had turned into. her clothes stained, her eyes wide and bloodshot, and her mouth covered in it. she lumbered through, feeling heavy almost. out of place.

she always felt out of place. this city wasn’t for her. she wasn’t like anyone here. but she didn’t know where else to go. she didn’t know how to drive, she barely knew anything about this country. she just sat there, washing herself off, curled up on the floor, disgusting. she felt disgusting.

she wasn’t the chosen one, a special person, who her mother said she could be.

she was clueless to the world around her, alone in the world.

today felt different. weirdly enough.

she had woken up full from last nights meal, the sun was shining brightly today, the warmth flooding her bedroom as she got up. she felt energized, and active. she bounced on her toes as she got ready for the day.

this feeling was odd, foreign. but not unwelcome.

she felt pretty today. when she dried her hair it fell in the perfect spots, the curls framing her face, cascading down her back. and when she smiled in the mirror, she didn’t mind when her nose scrunched and the skin around her eyes wrinkled.

maybe it was a sign. a sign to start something new.

recently she was invited to this club, by one of her friends, Barbara, one of the only people who made her feel welcome. supposedly they were having a new act tonight, a hypnotist..

when she looked at the message she was intrigued, she didn’t know those even existed.

she wasn’t doing anything tonight anyways, it couldn’t hurt to go watch his act.

perhaps it would be a new start to something new in her life. get some new experiences.. meet new people.

after all, she knows the best, it doesn’t hurt to indulge.

An Update on AB 3080 and AB 1949

Both bills have been referred from the California Senate Rules Committee into the California Senate Judiciary Committee. Neither has a hearing date listed on their agendas yet, so you have time to plan out and write your opposition letters letting them know why you're against these bills.

Most up to date texts as of 6/19/2024 on both bills below for your reference.

For information on how to send a position letter for each bill, please refer to the Judiciary Committee's website here. When official hearing dates are announced, you'll have until one week before at noon to send in your letters. So the sooner the better.

Remember that each letter should be single subject, single position (oppose). So you'll need to write out two letters. And remember what you write will be made public record. So write as concisely and with as well-informed a view as you can. Remember that as recently as this past April the governor of Arizona has rejected a similar law to AB 3080 regarding age verification due to concerns about it violating the first amendment and rights to anonymous speech.

Thank you again for all your hard work. I hope that with all our efforts combined, we can fight this bill and keep it out of our state.

Greco-Roman Roots of Christianity

Holy Wall of Text

More development of the basis of an idea leading to a link between Greco-Roman gods, Christianity, and TV Show Puppets. Feel free to skip it in favor of the next post.

There is another step to the idea of old, forgotten gods.  This idea of gods being powered by the belief of individual, and the renaming of gods or their purviews (Anoia) is directly related to the idea of religion tracking with the advancement of the society.  Say, your god/saint of wanderers becomes someone to protect those on trains.  There aren’t as many shepherds anymore, but ranchers are a thing, so the natural extension of a god’s territory makes sense.  I have always heard about the Greco-Roman tendency to incorporate local god systems when taking over an area lead to Christianity adopting this practice.  However, things I have read recently seem to indicate that Christianity doesn’t do that with cultures outside of the area of Greco-Roman influence. 

If you remember, Romans were in charge of the area where Jesus lived.  His whole story is interwoven with the story of Roman occupation.  (see Life of Brian for an interpretation of this, as well as the idea that even during the times of the Roman empire, there must have been groups focused on repelling the occupying forces)  Jesus is brought in front of Pontius Pilot for judgement (most of my information here is coming from Jesus Christ Superstar, so forgive me if I mess it up).  In the story, Pilot is not interested in punishing Jesus because he sees it as a local struggle that the Romans don’t need to be involved in.  He isn’t concerned with the impact of this figure on Judaism.  He does, however, become involved when it seems that there might be unrest, which could upset Roman rule.    

The information I read (see Christianity as the Roman State Religion on Wikipedia) states that Christianity evolved along with the Roman empire, leading to the two traditions to be linked.  For example, Constantine (306-337 CE) made Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire, leading it to spread to many regions, but at the same time he still worshiped the sun god of the Greco Roman tradition.  Given that Roman religious systems adopted local practices, the adoption of a new religious tradition incorporated all of the previous adoptions.

This is not to say that Christianity was easily adopted by the Romans.  Early Christians faced persecution on a few fronts, namely the rejection of the early Roman emperors. Given the Christian shift from Old Testament law to new testament, Judaism and Romans both rejected the new religion, which must have looked like a cult to established powers.  Based on history, the Romans allowed Jews to continue to practice their religion for a few reasons, but mostly because of their standard willingness to allow locals to continue their practices as long as the fit within the framework of Roman civil law.  Allowing local traditions to continue allowed the Romans to continue to rule over an ever-growing empire.  The method of their madness was to allow local people to rule themselves, with the oversight of a Roman governor, tasked with getting taxes, civil justice, and public order.  It is a lot more complicated, but simply put, they used bare bones oversight in places they could get away with it, and had legions involved in areas that were less easy to hold on to. 

All that to say that there was a division between the Jews and the Christians, and while we don’t have direct accounts of the action of the time, there seems to be enough documentation to give us an idea of what went down.  The split in Judaism and Christianity comes from the idea of who Jesus was, and the shift from the Old Testament’s laws to a new covenant developed by Jesus.  Christian law states that Jesus was fully human and fully divine, and that god sent him to sacrifice himself to result in an idea of divine forgiveness of human sin.  I can’t vouch for modern Judaism or Christianity, as I don’t get involved in it, and I have a very limited understanding of Jewish belief.  Suffice it to say that modern American Christianity is much less concerned with the teachings of Jesus and Jews for Jesus exists, so the lines are not clearly as defined as one would think. 

But the point I was making before I got distracted is this:  Christianity absorbs some of Greco-Roman religious system because of the Roman occupation.  Christianity was born in this environment, so more was absorbed than in Jewish tradition, which was much more established.  If people are interested in the in-between portion of this idea, I can post it, but I’m not a biblical scholar, so I will spare you.  We can see this infiltration mostly in the Catholic system of sainthood.  The word “saint” is Greek (hagios) for “holy” (by way of latin root “sanctus”).  There is an idea that gods could become human heroes and perform magic or spiritual powers after death. 

This idea (and the Greek nomenclature) evolves from the idea of the Hero Cult or Cult Hero.  This was a very strong feature of ancient Greek religion.  Essentially, the idea is a belief in demigods.  We know of the famous heros in mythology, such as Heracles (Hercules), who performed miraculous deeds and whose lives were greatly impacted by the gods’ impositions in their lives.  The idea of an Epic (or epic poem) comes from this idea.  Examples of this are Illiad and Odyssey by Homer.  This is an even older religious tradition for the Greeks, which was an evolution of ancestor worship.  The really interesting thing about it is that it is considered to have evolved from people essentially making up stories about grand burial sites/markers that no one remembers.  The idea of hero worship continues to this day, but in a metaphorical sense, in that we invest too much of our energy or ourselves into a person.  This idea, oddly enough, loops right back in to where I started, the ideas of gods being forgotten.  I would argue that white Americans participate in this kind of worship regularly, with the veneration of white explorers, pioneers, early ancestors that first arrived in this country, founders of towns and cities, celebrities, politicians, athletes, military, and millionaires/billionaires.  This is possibly true of other portions of American culture, but I can only speak of what I know.
