You play the young Sir Kenneth Branagh in Belfast, a semi-autobiographical film about the actor and filmmaker’s early life. Did you know anything about him?

I was a big fan! I had to pinch myself every day just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

How did they tell you that you got the part?

One morning I woke up, and it was a normal school day, and nothing really special was happening. And my mom got an email, and I read the first two words, and I ran around my house screaming, because I couldn't believe I got the part.

And you live near Belfast, right?

I live about 40 minutes from Belfast. Almost every single weekend we go down there. But we filmed in London across two different locations, and the set design was amazing: In two days they had built an entire replica of 1969 Belfast.

Have you always wanted to act?

I remember when I was 5 or 6, watching Marvel films, and I just had a passion for acting the entire time. I love Harry Potter as much as Marvel, and as soon as I saw Kenneth Branagh’s face, I was like, He’s in Harry Potter!

This is your first trip to Los Angeles. What’s your favorite thing that you’ve done?

The Jurassic World ride at Universal Studios! We got wet, but it was really, really fun.

Is there a movie that has made you cry?

The first time I watched Belfast, I cried. I cried for the first half hour. Even the uncut version made me start crying, because it was my first time seeing my face on the massive screen, and it was just amazing to see that.

Felix Hernandez is out of the Mariners rotation, and it’s incredibly depressing

Also, it’s a smart baseball move, but let’s wallow for a little bit.

There could be a fourth act. Bartolo Colon is on his sixth, after all. We’ve seen it before: The ace fireballer molts and becomes a cagey veteran, and we all get to appreciate him in a different way. This could be the path that Felix Hernandez takes, now that he’s in the bullpen.

There probably won’t be a fourth act.

This timeline is too familiar. There’s a gradual decline in velocity and overall quality of stuff, and then there’s a canyon. At the bottom of the canyon are alligators with opposable thumbs and dolphin brains, and they’re quicker than they have a right to be. Hernandez fell into that canyon last year and hid in the bushes for as long as he could, but the gators got him. The gators will always win. Baseball is like an old Atari game where the only objective is to stay alive long enough to rack up the highest score, and when you’re out of lives, there isn’t an option to continue. Everyone runs out of lives. It’s built into the game.

We know this instinctively — that one day, Juan Soto will amble out to the mound for a pregame ceremony, fat and old, as Nationals fans stand and scream — but it’s all so very abstract until there’s a moment to pin it on. Like the Mariners deciding that they have five starting pitchers who are better than Felix Hernandez and everyone nodding in agreement. There were times when there weren’t five starting pitchers on the planet who were better, and that’s being extremely generous, and now the Mariners 25-man roster will have five.

With Hernandez, the sunrise-sunset feeling is more acute, if only because he was the embodiment of youth. He was a teenager doing things that teenagers shouldn’t do:

And when you have a teenager making grown-ass men with families look bad, it’s easy to assume that it will last forever. For years, the tagline for Lookout Landing was “Felix is ours and you can’t have him.” Even though Jeff Sullivan didn’t realize those are two independent clauses that needed a comma, the sentiment was powerful. This was a reason to watch baseball. This was, maybe, the only reason to watch Mariners baseball, and you know what? It was enough. It was more than enough.

Sullivan also told me once that he wouldn’t trade Hernandez for a single Mariners World Series win, and I believe it.

I don’t think winning the World Series is the point.

It really isn’t. The point of baseball is to get excited every fifth day for someone like Hernandez. It’s to get excited before every game because you aren’t sure what (Juan Soto/Mike Trout/Max Scherzer/Matt Chapman/Bartolo Colon) is going to do next. It’s to make every single danged Felix Hernandez start the World Series and react accordingly. Come out with the signs and the props and the shirts and realize that, in this very specific way, the Mariners have it better than just about every baseball fan in the world. Every sports fan in the world.

If you consider all the team sports in the world, ask yourself how many of those teams could claim a talent as precocious and dazzling as Felix was in his prime? Probably some dude who couldn’t even touch the ball in his chosen sport, sure. A basketball player or two at the time, yeah. Football doesn’t lend itself to youth, so they’re eliminated. A cricket player, maybe.

You get the idea. Having someone dominate at the age that Hernandez did, sustainably and without calamitous injuries, is rare in a way that isn’t just baseball-rare. It was sports-rare. And it was going to last forever.

Yet here we are, in the year 2018, where Hernandez is 32 and a net negative on the Mariners’ roster. He’s two days older than Corey Kluber, two years younger than Max Scherzer, both of whom are pitchers carrying the burden of their entire franchises on their right shoulders, but it was the eternal youth of Hernandez that gave out first. If you’re worried about the 1,070 major league innings he threw before turning 25, that’s completely fair. Just know that the decline was coming eventually. It comes for everyone.

This one is just a smidgen crueler than most because of the timing. After years and years of languishing on a team frittering away his best years, Hernandez was finally on a contender again. And he couldn’t contribute. He could only push the Mariners further away from the postseason, just like the Mariners were adept at pushing Hernandez away further away from 200 career wins by scoring -1 runs in all of his starts. The timing wasn’t perfect. It rarely is.

This isn’t the end, necessarily. Oh, buddy, no. There will be a time for a post-mortem, but this isn’t it. Consider that when Fernando Rodney was Hernandez’s age, he had thrown 254 innings in the majors with a 4.25 ERA, which isn’t good for a reliever. Consider that Joe Blanton — who, as a starter, wasn’t even qualified to play Felix Hernandez in a community theater production — eked out two years as a viable late-inning relief option. There could be a fourth act, and it could come in the bullpen, with the velocity playing up and the offspeed stuff being as nasty as we remember it.

But as of right now, for the first time since 2005, for the first time since Yusniesky Betancourt was the shortstop of the future and Adrian Beltre was an underperforming 26-year-old with an uncertain future, the Mariners are better off with Felix Hernandez not starting games for them.

If that doesn’t make you feel something, you haven’t been paying close attention. It’s the right move. It’s an overdue move. But it’s also a move that gets me right in the heart section of my body. Felix Hernandez isn’t going to start games for the Mariners, and we’re supposed to be okay with that?

We’re supposed to be okay with that. It’s the bargain. It’s the bargain that comes for us all eventually.

That doesn’t mean we have to be okay with with that. I hate this with every fiber of my being, and you should too, even if it’s the correct move.

(HOUSTON) — Almost out of contention in May, champs in October.

Howie Kendrick, Anthony Rendon and the Washington Nationals completed their amazing comeback journey — fittingly with one last late rally on the road.

In Game 7 of the World Series, no less.

Kendrick and Rendon homered in the seventh inning as the Nationals overcame a two-run deficit, rocking the Houston Astros 6-2 Wednesday night to win the first title in franchise history.

With all eyes on Max Scherzer and his remarkable recovery after a painkilling injection, these Nationals truly embraced their shot in the first Series when the road team won every game.

Even more against the odds: Juan Soto and Washington rallied from behind to win five elimination games this postseason, an unprecedented feat.

“What a story,” said Ryan Zimmerman, the Nationals’ first draft pick back in 2005.

“I hope D.C.’s ready for us to come home!”

World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, new lefty Patrick Corbin and the Nats brought the first World Series championship to the nation’s capital since ol’ Walter Johnson delivered the crown for the Senators in 1924.

This franchise started out as the Montreal Expos in 1969 when the major leagues expanded beyond the border, putting a team with tricolor caps at jaunty Jarry Park. They moved to D.C. in 2005, ending Washington’s three-decade-plus wait for big league baseball after the Senators left town to become the Texas Rangers.

But the incredible path these wild-card Nationals with the curly W logo took, well, no one could have imagined.

“Resilient, relentless bunch of guys,” manager Dave Martinez said. “They fought all year long.”

Having lost star slugger Bryce Harper to free agency and beset by bullpen woes, Washington plummeted to 19-31 in late May. It got so bad there was talk around town the Nationals might fire Martinez and trade away Scherzer.

Instead, they stuck with the mantra that sprung up on T-shirts — Stay In The Fight.

“That was out motto,” Scherzer said.

And months later they finished it, indeed.

“Guess what? We stayed in the fight. We won the fight!” Martinez shouted during the trophy celebration on the field.

“We were down and out. We were 19-31. We didn’t quit then, we weren’t going to quit now,” he said.

For the 43,326 revved-up fans at Minute Maid Park, it was a combination of shock and disappointment. So close to seeing the Astros win their second crown in three years, they watched their chance suddenly vanish as Houston fell apart.

Washington kept pulling away after taking the lead, with Adam Eaton’s two-run single in the ninth accounting for the final margin.

Zack Greinke was in complete control until Rendon — a Houston prep and college star — hit a home run that cut Houston’s lead to 2-1.

When Soto followed with a one-out walk, manager AJ Hinch decided to make a move. He’d had ace starter Gerrit Cole warming up in the bullpen earlier, but this call was for Will Harris.

Kendrick connected on the second pitch, slicing a drive that hit the screen attached to the right field foul pole. Just like that, everything had changed for the team in orange that led the majors in wins, and the ballpark fell silent.

For Kendrick, another timely blow. At 36, playing on the oldest team in the majors, the journeyman earned the MVP award for the NL Championship Series against St. Louis after hitting the winning grand slam in the 10th inning of the deciding Game 5 of the Division Series at Dodger Stadium.

Then again, this was nothing new for the Nationals.

Washington rallied in the eighth to beat Milwaukee in the wild-card game and took the last two to beat Los Angeles in the NLDS, setting up a sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS.

Far away, a big crowd poured into Nationals Park for a watch party. That was the stadium where Houston hammered the Nats for three games last weekend, but their luck changed in Texas.

This World Series had lacked a lot of drama, aside from a volatile call of interference in Washington’s Game 6 win that stoked heated debate across the sports world. Who knew rule 5.09(a)(11) could stir such passion?

With Greinke and Scherzer grunting on every pitch, Game 7 was a classic duel from the start.

Yuli Gurriel put the Astros ahead with a home run in the second and Carlos Correa added an RBI single off Scherzer that made it 2-0 in the fifth.

Scherzer was done after the fifth, but he had done his job to keep it close. Only a few days earlier, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had been unable to lift his right arm because of nerve irritation near his neck.

Daniel Hudson closed it out for the Nationals, who made Houston pay for stranding so many runners on base all game. Hudson struck out Michael Brantley for the last out, then threw his glove to start the celebration.

For the Astros, who brought baseball into the Space Age with their far-out Astrodome and AstroTurf, and helped zoom the game into the galaxy of the Analytics Era, it was a startling end.

Houston shares a spring training complex in Florida with the Nationals and reported to camp in February full of high hopes.

The Astros breezed to the AL West title, edged Tampa Bay in a five-game ALDS and topped the Yankees in the ALCS. They played through front-office fiasco, which led to the firing of an executive for a boorish rant at female reporters during a clubhouse celebration.

UP NEXT

The Astros and Nationals start training side-by-side in a few months and open exhibition play with a World Series rematch on Feb. 22 at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. They met in their Grapefruit League opener this year and Scherzer gave up a home run to the first batter of the game.

Police officers with assault rifles lined the largely empty main streets of the capital Managua. The strike, organized by university students, farmers and business owners, was the latest tactic by a loose national alliance formed to dislodge the president.

“Look at this, it’s a desert,” said Juan Jose Murillo, 38, pointing to a vacant parking lot and the empty stalls of the usually bustling Huembes market, a central shopping destination.

Murillo, a street vendor, said he has struggled to make a living since demonstrations started. “I don’t support any political party. I just want the conflict to end.”

Ortega’s attempt to push through welfare cuts in April kicked off the bloodiest confrontations since a civil war ended in 1990. The government of the former Marxist guerilla and leader of the Sandinista rebel movement quickly dropped the planned welfare cuts. But the crackdown on protesters has sparked his biggest crisis since his second stint as president began in 2007.

Nearly 150 have been killed and hundreds injured in eight weeks of clashes between pro-Ortega forces and protesters armed with rocks, slings and homemade mortars.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected as “biased” the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ condemnation a day earlier of ongoing state-sanctioned repression. The commission released a scathing preliminary report in late May criticizing “grave violations of human rights” during a government crackdown.

Ortega’s administration has said protesters are vandals trying to destabilize his government and undermine democracy in one of the Western Hemisphere’s poorest countries.

A new round of talks between the government and civil society representatives were scheduled for Friday.

A previous round mediated by local Catholic bishops was suspended in late May after witnesses and rights groups accused government security forces of opening fire on thousands of demonstrators.

A few blocks from blood-spattered street barricades in Tipitapa, 13 miles (22 km) northeast of Managua, the silence was rent by cries of sorrow as relatives and friends gathered around the body of Agustin Mendoza, 22, his coffin streaked in the blue and white of the national flag.

Masked gunman in civilian clothes shot Mendoza on Thursday morning as he was filming nearby clashes, according to a mourner who said Mendoza was a cousin. Video footage from a relative shows someone sprinting through a dispersing crowd of protesters and a bearded Mendoza falling to the ground, his jeans soaked in blood from a stomach wound.

Down the street, dozens of young men covering their faces with shirts and holding homemade mortar launchers vowed defiance.

“They will have to kill us all,” said a masked youth who identified himself only as Joel, with the carcass of a burned down bus behind him. “We will not back down.”
