I haven't seen ep 5 of Kiseki yet, so this all might be moot, but do you think Zhang Teng and Juan are a couple/have feelings for each other? Cause I would love it if Zhang Teng is just this completely evil character, with no regard for human life - but will go even more feral than he already is and burn the entire world to the ground, if anyone touches a hair on Juan's head.
We can hope, right?
We can absolutely dream, anon, we can dream. (Yes, it's reversed, but maybe it can be reversed again someday?)

Sandwell District — Where Next? (The Point of Departure Recording Co.)
youtube
It should have been a question. The transcontinental collective known as Sandwell District had been defunct and assumed shuttered for years, its fax machine disconnected, its Situationist International Tumblr since overtaken, when the sudden, unexpected announcement in early 2023 of a reissue effort for 2010’s celebrated Feed-Forward revived interest among the techno faithful. Its key members had been operating independently for long enough that the prospect of a return was sufficiently dim, yet here was proof of life — that the mark of anonymous, forward-thinking dance music from these corners hadn’t yet been buried. Half a year on from the reissue, another curious missive in the form of a compilation and the announcement of a Primavera Sound gig. Something was afoot. “Where next?” should’ve been appended directly with “Why now?”
Instead, it’s an elegy.
Juan Mendez (aka Silent Servant) died alongside fellow Los Angeles artist Luis Vasquez (The Soft Moon) and Mendez’s partner Simone Ling January 18th at the age of 46. Every review of Where Next? you read will address this, so it’s not necessary to belabor its circumstances or the outpouring of grief in its wake, but suffice to say that Mendez was beloved in L.A. and beyond for his work both as a producer — which he was still a master of, as his (ill-)fittingly titled In Memoriam EP out in November on Tresor confirms — and, crucially to Sandwell, its visual language. One of the key components of Sandwell District was its resolute anonymity; for years, if you were buying music off these guys, it was white label 12s with no identification save a stamp of the name and a fax number. Mendez was the one who gave the group that Situationist-inspired aesthetic, lent depth and a difficult but still discernible additional dimension that otherwise may not have been there. In retrospect, it feels like no accident that the zine, the music and the “moment” all collided at the same time; four protagonists with years of experience behind them peaking in simpatico is an exceedingly rare thing in the dance world, and to have it happen as it did was both carefully orchestrated and worth all the praise. Dusted was no exception.
Without Mendez, Sandwell District’s revival now feels precarious, uncomfortable, indeterminate. The remaining core members — Karl O’Connor (aka Regis), Dave Sumner (Function) and Peter Sutton (Female) — must return to and reassess the question of this very compilation, whose existence initially struck me as a cynical money grab but, more charitably and with more consideration, could also have been intended as a siren for something new en route, a way of reminding those who were there and a slap in the face to those who weren’t that this group wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill Tuesday night Berghain residents, this was something else.
And what was that? Take a listen: From 2002 to 2012, a dozen tracks assembled for this comp mine Sandwell District (the label) for a retrospective that graphically displays the production talent at work while still leaving something on the table. The credits here all say “Sandwell District &,” but it’s superfluous; regardless of liner notes, however, the music holds up and you know what you’re getting right from the off with Function’s “Reykjavik,” originally from 2007’s “Isolation” 12”. A wobbling, heavy low end and the lightest touch of hi-hat establish the pulse, with a twinkling alien transmission straight from a 1950s sci-fi movie offering counterweight. It’s the crashing handclap and subsequent, seemingly endless decay at 30 seconds that really wakes you up, though — like the uneasy ambiance, a familiar trope of the group’s oeuvre but one forever deployed with the deftest of touches.
“Reykjavik” is one of the two earliest songs from this compilation; the other, CH-Signal Laboratories (8003 Lucerne)’s “Hypnotica Scale (Original Mix),” preceded it in ‘07 and was originally titled simply as “Scale 1 (Original Mix).” It’s a rolling IDM number that feels more primitive, less cognizant than the productions that would follow in its use of space in your headphones. It’s also arguably the thinnest track here from one of the few names in Sandwell’s history that was never fully declassified but to my ears sounds like Sumner’s work.
As the most prominent faces of the collective (Mendez was reticent and Sutton all but invisible at the group’s peak), O’Connor and Sumner often seemed to be the ones with the heaviest hands in final output, too — consider Sumner did the final Fabric mixdown, for instance. The balance gets partly redressed here: O’Connor gets credit for two songs and two edits; Sumner gets five songs (six if you count CH-Signal); Mendez gets four; and Sutton gets a song and a remix under the Kalon alias, which he shared alongside Karl Meier, a fellow member of O’Connor’s Birmingham-based Downwards posse. It works to great effect; if you hadn’t known this was a compilation spanning half a decade and not a cohesive album from a single set of sessions, nothing gives it away. Both sequencing and pace are thoughtfully examined as the album obliterates your speakers at the proper volume and eventually rolls into the station after some 70 minutes with the only song that really lets you up for air, “Inter.”
Still, questions remain. Timing aside, foremost among them is why this comp starts with tracks from 2007 and not 2002; that’s scything half of the label’s existence out of the picture, and it’s not like “Untergang” or “Cally 2” are much the worse for wear at this remove. More pointedly, why are any singles missing at all? A double or triple LP either mixed to its constituents’ satisfaction or arranged chronologically would’ve been equally potent.
Another question: Wherefore art thou, Rrose? Like Meier, Yves de May and Bob Ostertag, Seth Horvitz existed on the outskirts of the District, only entering the frame in Feed-Forward’s wake — but it feels grossly unjust to neglect Rrose’s contributions in particular as the label wound down and its members moved on. What I said at the time of “Merchant of Salt” stands: Sandwell’s methods were perhaps best executed by an outsider who subsequently struck out into more experimental lands, extending the spirit of the collective’s reach beyond the vision of its original members; in a way, Rrose alone best answered the question posed by this compilation, which only makes their absence more conspicuous.
As with everything else swirling about Sandwell District, explanations will trickle out as glyphs or remain scant, incomplete, perhaps even contradictory. Maybe we won’t know for weeks or months; maybe we will never know. This is all part and parcel of the operation, which remains fun for the sake of intrigue but as listeners can only really leave us to trust our ears and hearts. Scrape away the calcified grayscale complexion, then, and you have what lies beyond the questions — you have the real answer, the one that matters most. Did I say elegy? Sorry, I meant panegyric. Long may it be heard.

NEW TAPES FOR SEPTEMBER!
Hello
Our September tapes are out now!
Check out at https://cruelnaturerecordings.bandcamp.com/
1) POUND LAND "Violence"
8 filthy tracks of vitriolic desperation set against a backdrop of nineties alt-metal industrial abstracted by psych doom and post-punk.
'Violence is an album that captures that sense of perpetual anger, frustration & ever-creeping hopelessness. Of course, it does all that while making a gloriously malevolent racket.' (4/5) - Andy Brown, Louder Than War
"Pound Land do not release music to drink beer to on a sunny Sunday. They are the real rage against the machine – an uncompromising, uncomfortably harsh grind that speaks hidden and unfortunate truths" (10/10) - Dark Juan, Ever Metal
2) DRAGGED UP "Hex Domestic EP"
New EP from the off-kilter psych-garage Glasgow proto-punk band, featuring members from Trembling Bells, Vom, The Owsley Sunshine & Las Mitras. Mentioned in the same breath as Scottish indie-rockers Teenage Fanclub and garage-punks The Primevals, 'Hex Domestic' presents four new tracks showcasing their seamless off-kilter cross-pollination of doom, psych, proto-punk, garage rock, and spoken word.
"like classic CBGBs proto-punk transplanted to rain-drenched Scottish streets"
- Nathan Whittle, Louder Than War
3) MIKE NEAVES "You're Welcome"
A masterpiece of 160bpm spidery fractured techno. The sound of the jittery Monday AM interior of your skull, & the mutant sounds of the weekender you wish you were at instead.
"With Aphex Twin having released his latest EP, Blackbox Life Recorder 21f, last month, fellow UK gadget wrangler Mike Neaves drops something that hits just as hard"
- Simon Kirk, Sun 13
4) SALISMAN & HIS UNWAVERING CIRCLE "Parched"
Fourth album from the Anglo-American group (Chicagoans Paul Foreman, Travis Salisbury & Jon Raedeke with Tyneside’s Chris Tate - Score; One Key Magic; d_rradio) continuing their expert fusion of psych Americana and shoegaze, through exceptional songwriting and production.
The soundtrack for troubled times: Rivers of synthesizers. Pedal steel drenched in warbling tape echo. Tense electronic rhythms and rustic percussion.
Enjoy!

OK, first week of 15 Minutes with KPTS, which is about the time that Ep 1 takes to introduce us to our titular protagonists and let them have their meet-cute.
Something that immediately hit me is that Kinn is introduced as a literal red flag. Everybody makes so much of Vegas's red villain mood lighting, but Kinn marches out of that main family compound front entrance in our first view of him in a suit that's alternately the color of dried and fresh blood, depending, for his business meeting to casually shoot a guy in the head as a message. That suit's going to look burgundy, dark, the color of a scab of dried blood for most of this initial appearance, but then right around 14:30, when he gets off the motorcycle from behind Porsche at that gas station after they escape the goons trying to kill him, it's noticeably brighter, closer to the color of fresh blood, for his first actual conversation with Porsche.
Another thing I noticed right away was the use of reflections, and I know there's already been some meta about reflected vs. real images in the show, but I had forgotten that we start seeing it used this early. Some of it is probably for convenience, so we can see both Kinn's and Don's faces in a single shot, even though they're faced off on opposite sides of a table, but it also serves as an extension of self for the characters, a literal image of their metaphorical reach. When Kinn starts talking about looking through the company books, and then again when he talks about someone cheating, there are moments when we're looking directly at Don, and there's a reflection of Kinn to his right on screen, looking as if he's behind Don. If the reflection is an extension of self, then this is Kinn observing Don, stalking Don, while remaining unseen. Then there are a handful of times - including when Don asks Kinn to sit down at the beginning of the meeting, and then again when Kinn holds out his hand and accepts Big's gun - when we get a shot of Don that also shows both actual Kinn in front of him (across the table from him) and reflected Kinn behind him, the two of Kinn flanking him, like he's got Don boxed in - which of course, he does. The jaws of the trap are set when Don asks Kinn to sit down, and they snap closed when Big's gun hits the palm of Kinn's hand.
This is all intercut with our introduction to Porsche at Hum Bar, and we first see him facing away from the camera, toward the mirror behind the bar that's lined with liquor and glasses, as Yok brings in some customers, before he finally he turns around, game face on, to perform for the ladies. Porsche at Hum Bar is all shirt unbuttoned even lower than Kinn's, smooth talking the ladies, getting his cocktail on behind the bar, doing a dozen shots, handing out Don Juan advice for free - because he doesn't charge his homies - to his junior waiters and bartenders, and getting busy with tonight's hookup in the back alley. Every bit of this is a hustle of some kind - Porsche is introduced to us as a hustler. He advises his juniors that the way into rich ladies' wallets and panties is to praise them and give them what they want. He's having a post-O cigarette in the alley when Kinn comes barrelling in with Assassination Goon Squad hot on his heels, and like any good hustler, Porsche requires a fee for services rendered, i.e. to save Kinn's ass, because Kinn is not one of the homies. We're treated to a brief display of Porsche's street-fighting skills that we'll see for a couple of episodes and that he'll then apparently lose, like everything else of his old life, as he's subsumed into the main family compound. I'm going to miss street-fighter Porsche. The hustler will remain, however, and will not only understand that Vegas requires a fee to provide information in Ep 13 but will hold out that fee, a.k.a. Pete, on a silver platter, because Porsche is not actually one of Vegas's homies, and that's how you get services rendered. You can take the boy off the streets, but can you take the streets out of the boy?
At about 14:45, we've made our escape on Porsche's motorcycle, we stop in a gas station parking lot, and we hit this little wordless conversation of headtilts that was what initially hooked me into the show. Both Apo and Mile do a great job of this, and Mile, frankly, looks the best he's going to look anywhere in the show - I don't know if it's having Kinn's unfortunate helmet hair tousled fetchingly by the breeze on the back of a motorbike, or if this earliest stage of the show is still showing Filmania styling influence or what, but they never quite manage to hit this again.
Of note, the first time around, this whole exchange in the gas station parking lot gave me some expectations for their later pairing dynamic that did not pan out at all, lol (rough-trade Porsche whomst?). I can't help feeling like both Porsche and I get taken in a little bit by a Kinn who's out of his element and more specifically out of the iron control he otherwise keeps on everyone and everything around him, and we never really see that guy again, other than at some points during the kidnapping in Ep 6. Kinn playacts at it some when they slip the leash in Ep 8, maybe, but it still feels like an act there, I think - I'll be interested to see how I feel about it when it comes 'round on this re-watch. Porsche is also in control of their interaction in this scene in a way that not only will he never have again, but that we'll watch be systematically stripped away from him, sometimes brutally. Probably unintentional and just meant as a good comedy bit, but with knowledge of what's coming, Kinn asking for Porsche's phone and Porsche saying no while yanking it away from him made me think about how not only is Porsche going to lose his phone when the main family compound swallows him, but how he's only going to get a phone back - and one he's only supposed to use to call Kinn - when Kinn allows it for his own convenience.
Shot of the family crest ring as Porsche pulls Kinn's watch off.
First shot of Pete - foreground and blurred - at about 16:50 as the camera focuses on Arm and Ken instead.
Big's with Kinn for the entire first part of this sequence - he opens the door as Kinn leaves the main family compound, rides in the same car, takes point on the walk into the back room to meet Don, stands at Kinn's left shoulder during the meeting, hands Kinn his own gun for the wetwork, and of course is the one who sticks to Kinn like a burr while trying to escape Assassination Goon Squad, until he gets shot. He gets shot in the arm right about the same place Pete's going to shoot Vegas in the last ep. He's also shown right up front wearing his cute little stylin' ponytail and some earrings, indicating both that he's going to be a speaking character and that he's apparently being allowed some liberties with the dress code that we aren't going to see from anyone else while they're in uniform. Meanwhile, we don't actually see any more of our regulars among the bodyguards during the meeting with Don.
Gets us to about 17:00 for this week.

My favourite Jrock Band
With their return to Chile after 9 years, I wanted to talk about this band that I came to know thanks to the world of anime, but ended up listening to because of how catchy and emotional their music is. Asian Kung-Fu Generation was formed in 1996 in Yokohama, comprised of Masafumi Gotoh (vocalist and rhythm guitarist), Kensuke Kita (lead guitarist and backup vocalist), and Takahiro Yamada (bassist). Drummer Kiyoshi Ijichi later joined from another band, thus forming the band's current core. They have a total of 11 studio albums and several compilation EPs, with the first two albums "Kimi Tsunagi Five M" (2003) and "Sol-fa" (2004) standing out the most to my taste, with the latter being re-recorded in 2016. The band gained worldwide recognition for their soundtracks in the anime world, being part of Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, and other renowned anime series.
The band's musical style is heavily influenced by alternative-rock and indie-rock bands of the 1990s such as Weezer, Radiohead, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. This is also combined with a wide variety of other genres such as hardcore punk, pop, and heavy metal. Therefore, the sounds of the band's songs are a mixture of elements from these genres, such as fast tempos, distorted guitars, transgressive and emotional lyrics, strong melodies, and catchy choruses.
To conclude, I wanted to mention my favorite songs from the band, which I recommend listening to:
"After-Dark", a song from the album "World World World" (2008), which conveys a message of perseverance and keeping hope alive despite life's uncertainties. Additionally, it is the 7th opening of the anime Bleach.

"Blue Train", a song from the album "Fanclub" (2006), gives a feeling of traveling through time and how they face changes and challenges along the way with a message of optimism and acceptance for what is to come.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9nkiTeuYRo
"Soranin", a song from the album "Magic Disk" (2010), is a melancholic song about longing for the past, farewell, and personal growth that everyone must go through at a certain moment in life. This song was written by Inio Asano, author of the manga of the same name as the song.

Mural - Shake It Up EP (New Human Music)
8DPromo · Mural - Shake It Up EP (New Human Music)
Erik Brown, also known as as graphic artist FRISK, unveils the moniker Mural and catapults onto the electronic music stage with his latest creation, the Shake It Up EP, released under the innovative new label New Human Music. Brown, a mainstay in the San Francisco music scene has been dazzling the Bay Area with underground DJ sets since the early 2000s. His unique ability to weave intricate grooves using an arsenal of gear is evident in this latest offering. As he prepares to relocate his studio to Thailand in 2024, his impressive discography continues to expand with this new venture into New Human Music's revolutionary ethos. The EP, a succinct yet impactful trio of tracks, kicks off with "Shake It Up," a robust house music anthem designed for an energized underground. It's a masterful blend of crisp rhythms, pulsating synthesizers, ethereal string pads, and vibrant vocal stabs that create an irresistible auditory invitation. Following this is "Shake and Dub," a more minimalist dub version of its predecessor. This track strips back the layers to spotlight rhythmic drums, a groove-laden bassline, and '80s-flavored synth tones and effects. And then“Love Will Find A Way” combines Moroder-ized synth patterns with an uplifting vocal hook. Together, these songs exemplify Mural's prowess in crafting tunes that resonate with the eclectic and dynamic spirit of New Human Music, a label that celebrates artistic transformation and the seamless fusion of genres like New Techno, Retro Disco, and House Music.
Jon Fugler (Fluke) – “I absolutely love this. Every track is a gem.” Juan Moreno (1 Life Records) – “Nice track, perfect for the sun.” Ewan Pearson (Kompakt) – “I’m liking both of these tracks a lot.” Jon Wesley (Insomniac) – “Great tunes. I like them all. Shake It Up really works, can’t wait to play it.” Brian Busto (Serious Soul) – “Shake It Up is fire. Will be playing this one a lot.” Steve ‘Griffo’ Griffiths (Fluid Radio Shows) – “A very groovy EP! Shake and Dub is the one for me.

All that glitters is not gold - The realities behind the image/story/object (a real life aspect): Colonel Jose Espejo's plot to rescue FARC hostages - By RPG.
Painting of a FARC encampment/prison; where soldiers and civilians of Colombia were subject to brutal conditions and treatment.
The year was 2010:
Jose Espejo, an expert in the field of military communications with the Colombian Army, had a very major issue on his hands. Watching a grainy video filmed by FARC, a former far-left terrorist organisation, he saw the internal horrors in which the kidnapped experienced; soldiers with flesh-eating diseases, horrific insect bites that had developed into gangrenous patches being locked behind barbed wire fences.
Some of the hostages were in the camp for more than 10 years, under the careful and eager-eyed watch of FARC guerillas who only awaited the arrival of actual military forces.
It being 2010, Espejo was coming to the end of his 22-year-long career with the Colombian Army. With this, he couldn't settle with retirement when he knew full well his men were still in that camp suffering unimaginable punishments; He had to devise a plan to reunite Colombians with Colombia, and back with their families who so desperately missed them for all those years away.
There was one man who Espejo had faith in the most, Juan Carlos Ortiz. On the day of the plan, Juan was busy being a father to his children when he was called by Jose; Jose wanted Juan's skills as a naturally-talented advertising tactician to form a way for these missing troops to know that they would be rescued, and soon.
Ortiz was infamous with advertising in America, and had a career with the company known for its Tony the Tiger adverts. He created an anti-drug public service announcement that became very widely known in Colombia, so far so that he became the first Colombian to win a gold Lion at Cannes returning to Bogota a national hero.
The success of his anti-drug PSAs had its affect on Ortiz, making him a major target for FARC-EP (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia - Ejercito del Pueblo) as they relied on the trafficking of drugs like cocaine to fund their campaign against the government of Colombia. As quoted by Ortiz, "They offered me the opportunity of paying them in exchange for my life". Having been mailed deeply threatening letters from FARC, Ortiz purchased a bulletproof car and even assisted law enforcement in sting operations to catch his blackmailers; and as the threats persisted, his employer moved him to a New York branch.
Military operations involving Colombian Special Forces were already being conducted, such as that of Operation Chameleon, where 300 soldiers secretly raided FARC compounds. For Ortiz to compilate a viable option to let these hostages know that they were not forgotten, they needed to make sure they mitigated any sort of deaths; FARC rebels were notorious for the killing of any hostages during any military raids.
One of the prior operations that the Army took up was a psychological operations sortie, on Christmas day, where soldiers would set up illuminated Christmas trees across the jungle to remind guerillas of what they were missing. Also, 7 million baby pacifiers were dropped into the jungle in efforts to encourage pregnant female fighters to defect.
The plan to use morse code in a hostage rescue environment wasn't unique, being used prior in the Vietnam War when Jeremiah Denton used morse code by blinking his eyes to spell out "T-O-R-T-U-R-E" and when soldiers got suspicious blaming the constant blinking on the light from the studio setup.
In September 2010, a song was recorded in a small studio in Bogota; by the Army and musicians in a secretive manner. The song incorporated Morse code within its chorus, which read at a rate of 20 words per minute fitting with the song perfectly; this was performed by Natalia Gutierrez Y Angelo who were fairly unknown in the music scene within Bogota. This song is known as "Better Days".
The operation turned out a major success, FARC ended up handing over 5 prisoners as a humanitarian gesture. The rest were rescued as on par with covert military missions in the area.
The story holds a meaning - That you can be in a dire situation but always retain hope, to keep a strong mind and to plan ahead. FARC presented themselves as a group that shouldn't be provoked, but there were those who saw just a shell that could easily be cracked.
"1-9 P-E-O-P-L-E R-E-S-C-U-E-D. Y-O-U A-R-E N-E-X-T. D-O-N-T L-O-S-E H-O-P-E" - The message that reassured the imprisoned that they would be saved.
