You knew him to the core.
You knew he wanted to become a rapper, you knew he loved hip hop and longed to travel to the United States. You knew every detail of his face, the sharp eyes and the hair that fell on his forehead, the way his fingers vibrate around the pencil when an idea came to his mind for a new verse.
Choi Subong was an innocent soul with sporadic nuances, a maze of spontaneous thoughts embodied in a pretty-faced teenager.
And you... You were a tumult of questions, a swirl of insecurities and tasks. You perceived yourself as so opposite to him, an explicit divergence in your personalities that somehow or other made your friendship work.
You liked him, your affection for him was so deep and innocent that you found yourself hopelessly wrapped up in an idyllic unrequited feeling. You were not his type, it was clear to you, boys like him don't fall in love with girls like you, but rather with girls like your seatmate.
Ah... she sure was cute, as confident as she was witty, as lacking in insecurities, as perfect for him... and that was exactly what made you confused. Because if she was the idealization of his perfect partner model, what was he doing staring at you during the first period break?
Longing, misfortune, inspiration, confusion, fear, insecurity, caution, restraint, pain... his gaze was as indecipherable as he himself was. Sitting at his desk a few steps away from yours, amidst the hustle and bustle of the room, the conversations around you became blurred and the voices more and more distant, because his gaze on you seemed to placate everything around you.
No, he definitely couldn't be looking at you, not in that way that made your heart beg for a chance, for a word or a look that was more intimate, more his and precisely right for you, for both of you. It wasn't you, it was never you, it was her. The certainty was cruel, your mind was determined to forge that truth and live around it: Subong liked your friend (silly).
You were back that day from lunch, chatting with your friends, sitting at your desk while fixing the boards of your skirt, when you saw Subong approaching you. He was going to say something, you were sure.
You said something about the food at lunch, but he said nothing. Sitting across from you, that look again...doubt, pain, longing. His eyes glittered, enthusiastic orbs chained to a torment you didn't know, undecipherable.
The second period bell was the only thing that could cut the tension of the moment, dragging Subong back to his seat.
The end of the second period. On the way home, at the corner, your friend eagerly grabbed you by the shoulders, shaking you vigorously as she let out a shout of joy.
âSubong likes you!â she exclaimed with eagerness.
âWhat weird things you say...â you shook your head.
âHe looks at you as if he would die if he spoke to you.â
âHe must want to ask me for some favor, maybe he wants to go out with you.â
She snorted, so deep it seemed to move the treetops. âOf course not, for God's sake, he pays more attention to you than to his rhymes.â
You grimaced in disagreement.
âI want fried chickenâ she said suddenly grabbing you by the hand and dragging you to the nearest store.
You were drinking soda when the group of guys came in, friends from school, Subong among them. He was petrified when he met your gaze.
Everyone at the table shared small talk, Subong and you a couple of laughs and comments, and maybe the occasional grazing of hands as you tried to grab the sauce for the chicken. Your friend looked at him, then at you. One had to be very foolish not to sense what you both felt but were afraid to confess.
The group left as night was falling, almost everyone walking in the same direction, until an intersection separated the three of you from the rest. The chatter was pleasant, your friend held your hand, Subong walked behind both of you.
âCome Subong, I can't hear you wellâ she said, dragging him between the two of you, causing him to instinctively grab your hand... just like hers. Subong's fingers were warm, the warmth of his skin wrapped around your palm as his thumb lazily caressed the back of your hand.
It was almost perfect, except that he was also holding your friend's hand... was he also caressing her hand? did he fit better with her than with you? was this some kind of charity?
âI forgot somethingâ you said suddenly ceasing to walk, pulling your hand almost too roughly away from his. The chill of the night running across your skin almost at the instant of separation.
And then, the martyrizing picture, just as you suspected... They looked good together, him taller, his firm hand encircling her delicate digits, almost caging her small limb, so clinging to her.
âI'll go,â your friend said, suspecting the worst, it was as if she read the wave of theories overflowing through your mind.
"No, it's okay. Go ahead without me" you insisted turning around and walking to who knows where.
Moving down the street, you still felt the tingle of his fingers on your skin, the electricity of his ambiguous touch, the sway of his walk and the sound of his voice, the closeness of your deep harmony. You sensed him so intimate, so alien to the rest, but deep down you felt that he would never be yours, not even for you.
So foolish you had been to believe for a moment that Subong felt something for you.
The sudden weight on your shoulder pulled you away from your own trance. You didn't have to turn around to know it was him, his fingertips digging into your clothes, static on your skin, lightly moving your shoulder to make you turn to look at him.
âHow long have you been following me?â you asked bluntly. Still turning your back to him.
âAs soon as you left I followed youâ his hand trailed down your arm to your wrist, âI wasn't going to leave you walking alone, I'm taking youâ, he began to guide you down the street.
And again that pleasant sensation that made your heart shrink, his hand covering yours with indelible naturalness. But it hurt, for some reason you couldn't conceive the idea that at least deep down, he held a shred of affection for you.
âI'd rather go alone,â you said, waving your hand, releasing yourself from his grip.
He turned to you, round eyes with surprise, and yet his hand found yours again almost like a magnet.
âSubong, stop itâ you exclaimed pushing his insistence away with disdain.
âWhat's wrong with you?â he gasped, almost as disgusted as you were, his lips in a pout, âyou've been acting strange all day.â
âMe?â the expression was as sharp as it was disappointing, "I'm not the one who came over after lunch to stare at someone silently, you talk as if I'm the one who was staring at you during second period. You're the one staring at me like a zombie, you walk up to me without saying anything, and when I think you're going to act normal you hold my hand in a way you don't do to a friend...you make me believe things that aren't there. Being honest, I don't understand you, if you're playing a game tell me because I really don't think I can stand whatever it is you'reâŠâ
Words catch in your throat as his lips meet yours, catching the claim in his breath, wrenching away misery and every hint of insecurities with the synchronized movement of your mouths. Soft, yes, his lips were soft as you imagined, deft and cautious, prudence contained in shy assaults of his tongue.
âYou talk too muchâ he said over your lips, careful not to break the kiss as his hands cupped your cheeks.
No one was home, and all the while you two were a pair of off-balance idiots, giggling between kisses trying to get out of each other's clothes. Your foreheads pressed together with your hearts in a frenzy.
The room felt so small, the heat was unsettling as Subong's hands tried to undo your blouse with little proficiency. The anxiety of this dance of desire collapsed Subong's skills, who laughed nervously as he removed the clasp from your skirt.
The fabric rolled down your legs, leaving you in your underwear, the blush creeping up your cheeks, and him, his lips parted as his gaze roamed over you as if you were a dish he was eager to devour, as if you were an unknown world.
Pants off. Now you were on the mattress, Subong on top of you. You didn't dare look at him, you felt ashamed to have to see hisâŠ.
âDo you want me to stop?â
âNo!â you replied almost too quickly, too confidently compared to his serene, almost shy tone.
He just nodded, cautious, a subtle nod of his head.
He pressed his lips together as if encouraging himself, and grabbed your panties from the corners, sliding his hands over your hips and thighs, he seemed too focused on this, almost doubtful... Is it that he didn't want to? He didn't know how to do it? Subong wasn't a virgin... or was he?
âYou know how to do it don't you?â the cautious way you said it had to have been too funny to draw a smile from Subong. His face seemed to light up.
âYou think Thanos is a virgin?â he asked as he settled your legs around his hips, the third person mention had stolen a chuckle from you
âWe won't be needing thisâ he said leaning towards you. His hands found your bra clasp with a familiar nature, weathered and trained as he uncovered the valley of your breasts from their captivity .
"I thought..."
âYou were just making me nervous, that's all... I didn't want you to be regretsâ the words carried so much lust, but his eyes held so much innocence... Or something darker, something you couldn't decode.
âSubongâ you caressed his cheek, his name uttered like a desperate oath.
He leaned in vehemently, his lips finding yours, his bare chest against your bare breasts, your erect nipples against his restless throbbing, his member touching your lower belly.
He is cautious in touching you, his fingertips burning on your skin as he roams you as if you would break in his arms, probes beneath the shadow of your breasts and the curve of your waist, dipping low enough to make you shudder beneath him.
His lips descend to your chin, his tongue traces the line of your jaw and designates your neck as his favorite domain, sucking the skin furiously, oblivious to the designs of sanity, feeling you begin to wriggle from the stimulation.
The heat grows between your thighs, and without leaving your neck, Subong's fingers slide between your legs. Almost as if summoned by your growing ecstasy.
Your nails dig into his scarred shoulders, tanned skin beginning to sweat from the warmth of your incessant moans.
His fingers slip through your juices, parting your folds cautiously, drawing moans from your throat. He caresses you gingerly, smooth and sober, as he leaves kisses on your collarbone, descending to your chest, designating a route to the tacit foreplay.
One of his fingers touches your entrance, and you almost gasp as he moves in. Thin, hard, and determined. You moan as you arch your back, Subong's hand for support, between your shoulder blades caressing the sweaty skin, as his mouth sucks at your buttons.
He takes his time inserting his second finger, invading your insides, touching fibers you didn't know could be touched, sending waves of heat between your legs, to your abdomen. The swirl of sensations clouding your vision. His fingers begin to move in rhythm, digging inside you, the wet sound overtaking your moans.
You feel the tingling increase, the warmth of that unfamiliar sensation spreading to your thighs. The sway of his fingers is smooth, gentle and peaceful, he was seeking your own pleasure, not his. He wanted to show how good he could make you feel.
âMoreâ the words roll fluidly across your tongue, as if they were part of your vocabulary. And when Subong's fingers leave you, making you miss that feeling of fullness, you feel something else...
There was no way you could stretch that wide, but his length advancing inside you, centimeter by centimeter, seemed to remove all traces of doubt.
âSubong~â your cry is an amalgam of pleasure and pain, diamonds of tears appearing at the corners of your eyes.
âThe first time hurts a little, I knowâ he whispers against your chest, frowning and anchoring his fingers into your skin as his cock breaks through your velvet walls.
Tight, virginal, fragile and delicate, there was an appendage of guilt in his intrusion as he ripped away your innocence with his passion. He was inside, you could feel him coursing around every corner, the strange texture exploring your womanhood, filling you as far as he could.
A growl from him, as he sunk his face into the crook of your neck, his hand stroking your hair, tangling a lock in his fist as your chin rested on his shoulder. His scent filled your mind with lust, growing ardor of unknown sensations, trapped beneath him, filled with his desire for you.
As he began to move you felt the sky pounce on you, your back sliding across the mattress in a back and forth of deep, soft but deep lunges, as your ear was bathed by his low moans, that husky, dark voice crying out your name.
âYou don't know how bad you make meâ he said leaving a bite on your neck, his hips pressing against yours, pounding you with the rush of fluids.
"I thought so much of you. In this" a stray caress in your hair, as his crescendoing motion pushed you further and further.
You clung to his back, his shoulder against your nose during his penetrating fluctuation, as he seemed to pull you tighter into a kind of embrace, leaving wet kisses on your cheek.
âI was afraid you wouldn't accept meâ a growl after it, a deep one as he felt you tighten on him, âI was afraid I could never have you like thisâ the pace frantic, relentless.
Your back arches, the heat growing in your abdomen, your nails marking his skin, the scarlet traces of your ebullient stride, of your climb to ecstasy.
Erratic and wild, Subong did not want to let go, clinging to your walls, to that soft spot that pounded incessantly, insisting on hearing you scream his name.
Heat, burning, pressure... the release was as hot as the ascent, the weight wrenched away with a final onslaught as you felt the tangle inside you unravel and your muscles convulse.
Subong stayed in you, deep, as you both moaned, embraced, joined in various ways. One last kiss on your neck before he pulled out of you, the strings of his ecstasy escaping from your insides, wet and warm, as much as the kisses he began to place on your shoulder as he lay next to you, his arm under your head and his breath against your skin. You looked up at the ceiling as your feet tangled together, as your heart slowed.
Those furtive glances continued during breaks, during classes, and intensified when hiding in the music room after school, when Subong would drop his notebook full of verses about you to lift your skirt and corner you against the wall, or when during lunch he would touch your thigh maybe too far above the knee... in any case you didn't stop him because those deep black eyes begging for affection were your damn weakness..

Slow Hands | Chapter 5
âbe still, my foolish heartâ

A/N: so originally I was going to write more for this chapter, but like @morning-star-joy says, sometimes a story tells you how it should be written so Iâve decided to end the chapter where I feel it felt most natural. The slow burn is still slow-burning but thereâs definitely some development happening! đ€đ€

Joel Miller was fast asleep on your couch. In your home. He felt comfortable enough to doze off at your kitchen table. Well, of course he was exhausted. He was out at the late hours of the night patrolling with Tommy, and then he spent the early morning hours with you on your rooftop.
Nonetheless, he was asleep on your couch.
You couldnât help but feel giddy like a little school girl that was developing her first crush at recess. Joel was handsome, ruggedly handsome and there was no denying it. He reminded you of a pearl. Something so beautiful, yet hard to obtain as a pearl is always guarded by the outer shell of an oyster. You couldnât help but wonder what he thought of you as you stepped outside of your home. The air was still brisk and there was a fresh layer of frost coating the ground. Spring was on the horizon with the sound of chirping chickadee's that gossiped in the treetops above. New life was beginning to sprout and blossom through the frost. Soon Jackson would flourish in green.
You triple checked your front door lock as a forced habit. When you felt relieved that the door was in fact locked, you quietly walked down the wooden steps that were far sturdier now as Joel insisted on replacing some of the rotted planks.
As you started the short walking distance to the stables, you remembered Joel telling you that he would often count his steps as a grounding system. In turn, you found yourself doing the same. There was some innately comforting being around the horses. The barn smell didnât bother you, in fact you relished in it. From the sweet smelling grain, the earthy scent of Alfalfa, and the horses natural aroma. All of these scents permeated your senses in an indescribable warmth. There was no sign of Ellie or Dina when you stepped into the stables and you were greeted with soft nickers, and curious expressions before the horses returned to their breakfast.
Tommyâs horse, Timber, was a leopard spotted appaloosa that truly had the goofiest human-like personality. Sometimes you wondered if there was actually a human trapped inside of his four-legged body just from the way he would look at you. You stopped in front of his stall and reached into your coat pocket to pull out a handful of sugar cubes that laid flat in your palm.
âHey, pal.â You softly cooed as Timber lifted his head from his grain pan. âDid you see anything exciting last night? Any stories for me?â
Timber snorted softly as his velvet soft muzzle rested in your palm. He wasted no time to gently snatch up each of the sugar cubes before he was nuzzling your pocket for more.
âWow, five racoons? How exciting.â You giggled as you playfully and gently nudged his muzzle away. âWere you scared?â
Another snort and a hoof pawing at the ground. âOh, alright. Just one more, okay?â You snuck him one last sugar cube followed by a gentle pat on his neck before you strode away from his stall. Your mare, Tess, was a flea bitten gray QH. Shortly after outbreak day, you found her wandering through your abandoned neighborhood and you were drawn together like moth to flame. She was your special girl, your beacon of light through the darkness. Her darker counterpart, Tex, was always at her side. He was always at her side, brooding like a shadow but he had the most gentle brown eyes despite his rugged demeanor. Tex was a jet black mustang, and unbeknownst to you, he was Joelâs horse.
You stopped outside of Tessâs stall first and your mare already had her neck outstretched over the stall door to greet you. She nickered softly as you gently wrapped your arms around her fury neck in a tender hug. âGood morning my special girl.â Your tone was so soft-spoken, sweet like the sugar cubes that laid in your coat pocket. Sometimes you felt a bitter-sweet melancholy thinking about how much time you had spent with this mare and the trials and tribulations you went through together. Maybe one day when your mind and heart were calm, youâd be able to go outside beyond Jacksonâs towering walls on her back once more.
You wiped your brewing tears along the sleeve of your hoodie as you fed Tess a few sugar cubes. Your fingers gently twirled the soft tendrils of her forelock between your fingers as your forehead came to gently rest upon her own.
You were torn from your present mourning thoughts by the sound of Texâs hoof pawing at the ground. His ears were attentively flicked forward in your direction.
âDo you want some sugar cubes too?â You softly asked the jet-black mustang as he pawed at the ground once more.
Your forehead slowly dropped from Tessâs as you reached into your pocket once more and pulled out a helping of sugarcubes. Despite Texâs brooding nature, he was incredibly gentle as he ate the sweets from your tender palm. His velvety soft muzzle and wispy whiskers tickled your skin. His eyes held so much warmth, so much kindness, and you swore this horse was staring into your very soul.
Joel had awoken shortly after you had departed for the stables. He vaguely remembered the handwritten note nestled in the worn fibers of his flannel pocket. He slowly swung his legs over the side of the couch with a heavy grunt. His hand reached for the mug of coffee that he downed in one gulp as the muscles in his back strained tightly. He let out a grumbled sigh as he carefully folded the quilted you had laid upon him. He grabbed both the empty mug and plate and brought them back into the kitchen. Heâd be damned if he wasnât a respectful house guest. He couldnât help but feel that warm tingle in his heart creeping through the morning chill as he stepped outside. How sweet you were to leave him a treat and a note.
He headed off in the direction of the stables and the sight he saw warmed his heart even further as he observed Tex gently nibbling on the lapels of your coat as you were braiding individual sections of his charcoal black mane. Joel and his horse counterpart were very similar in the sense that they had a protective brooding nature. Hardened exterior yet soft in the middle. Weathered and mysterious, yet docile and gentle.
âYâknow darlin, if yâkeep feedinâ meân Tex sweets like this, youâre gonna fatten us up.â Joel softly chuckled as he stepped further into the barn. He hoped that he had not frightened you, or ruined the moment you were sharing with his horse entirely.
You could feel the heat rise to your cheeks as Joel leaned up against the side of Texâs stall with one of his broad arms leaning against the side of the wooden stall door. His expression was playful in nature as your eyes finally met his softened gaze.
âTex is yours I presume?â
âMhm. Heâs got an apparent sweet tooth jusâ like me as well. Think heâs taken a particular likinâ to ya Beanie.â He murmured silkily.
âI have to admit..you do look alike. Tess has taken a liking to him as well.â You responded with a smile tugging along your lips as you finished braiding the last section of his once unruly mane.
âHow so? Youâve got me intrigued now darlin.ââ He paused momentarily as his eyes flitted over at your mare. âTess is yours? I had..no idea.â
âYour eyes. Theyâre the same as his..that same deep shade of brown..like cinnamon. Tess is mine, yes. I found her after the outbreak day, after the government bombed the major cities. She was wandering through my abandoned neighborhood and were just drawn to each other.â
Tex and Tess.
Joel could feel a newfound sense of emotions wash over him as he cleared his throat against the sleeve of his coat. âWell, sheâs..a real sweetheart. I can see why Tex likes spendinâ time with her. What about my eyes now? Theyâre like cinnamon? Wish I could see the world from your eyes darlin,â cause to me? My eyes are just brown. Like the dirt. Ainât nothinâ special to âem.â He rolled his shoulders into a half shrug.
âShe is a sweetheart. Sheâs my special girl. Joel, brown eyes are beautiful. Have you ever seen them in the sunlight? They melt into golden rays, like sticky warm caramel. Thereâs nothing boring about brown eyes. Theyâre extraordinary.â You murmured as your eyes casted downwards to where Tex was still gently nuzzling his face into the warmth of your coat.
Unbeknownst to either you or Joel, Dina and Ellie were up in the hay rafters laying on their stomachs as they eavesdropped.
âWhy donât you ever talk about my eyes like that El?â Dina softly teased as she lightly poked Ellieâs shoulder.
âBecause I'm not a poet, Dee.â Ellie whispered back with a smile tugging on her lips.
âWell, Beanie sure is. I donât think I've ever seen Joel blush like that before. Heâs as red as a tomato.â Dina whispered as her and Ellie quietly peeked over the rafters to get a better look.
âThatâs cusâ Joel likes her. Isnât it obvious? Heâs always spendinâ time with her. I canât blame him honestly because she's like really really pretty.â Ellie murmured as she rubbed her hands together to keep them warm. âNot as pretty as you of course.â She quickly added feeling heat rise to her cheeks. Dina and Ellie were just friends but lately there was something else there that was beginning to simmer between them. The last time Ellie felt for someone in a romantic sense was Riley..and now? Well, only time would tell what laid ahead for the two teenagers.
Joel was unable to find the words that he could respond with to your generous compliment. His brain felt like it was re-wiring as if the circuit had been cut through. He didnât want to leave you hanging like a stray leaf on a dead branch that was holding on for dear life as a ferocious wind tried to tear it from the stem. He blinked, cleared his throat as his thumb swiped across the tip of his aquiline nose. âSo, I take it that you like my eyes then?â He mused with a slight arch of his brow as both of his broad arms came to cross against his chest.
âYeah, I suppose you could frame it that way.â You responded a bit sheepishly as you peered up at him through soft lashes.
âWell, that was a mighty fine compliment tâgive me. I never thought of brown eyes in that mindset. Maybe I outta start tryinâ to see the world through your eyes, huh? Anyway, I didnât get muchïżœïżœïżœof a chance to give Tex a proper groominâ after patrol..you wanna help me out?â
âIf youâre looking to live life with your head up in the clouds like me, then I recommend you adapt to my mindset. See the small beauties that whatâs left of the world has to offer. Like the changing of seasons for example. Winter is so cold, so dark, yet it is beautiful. The way that the snow hugs the branches on the trees and the jaw dropping sunsets that paint the sky.â You trailed off before responding to his question, âSure, I'd love to help you out.â
Joel was in awe to say the least. For someone who had been through so many unspeakable horrors, you truly did see life in all of its beauty. He could listen to you shamelessly for hours if youâd let him. He pushed himself off of the side of Texâs stall as he maneuvered around you to bend down and pick up the grooming box. âI never really was all that a fan of winter. Holds a lot of bad memories fâme. I do see what you mean about the beauty in it. I love fall the most. When the colors in the sky begin to change and the leaves transform into all of these brilliant shades of orange, yellows, and reds. It was always Sarah's favorite time of the year as well. Sheâd drag my ass to the nearest pumpkin patch as soon as the first leaves began to fall.â
âIâm sorry that winter holds bad memories for you..but iâm a firm believer that everything heals with time. I think out of all the seasons fall is probably my favorite as well. Was Sarah a big fan of Halloween? She seems like the kinda kid that would go crazy over getting to dress up.â You wanted to nurture this conversation that Joel was openly having with you. You could only imagine the emotional toll it brought upon him when talking about Sarah.
âOh, she absolutely loved Halloween. Sheâd have her costume pretty much planned out months in advance. We watched all of the movies together as well. Beetlejuice was her favorite. What can I say? My kid has some damn good taste.â He chuckled softly as he quietly unlatched Texâs stall. âIâd take her trick-or-treating and then when weâd get home I'd help her sort through all of her candy and make her pay the âdad tax.ââ His eyes crinkled in the corners when his mind encapsulated an image of a ten year old Sarah in her Lydia Deetz costume. âDaaad. You canât eat all of my candy! You have to save some for me!â âYeah, yeah dontcha worry, kiddo. I ainât gonna eat it all, but you gotta pay the dad tax, baby girl. Thatâs the rules.â
Joel had just slipped Texâs halter over his ears when he felt your hand gently grasp his bicep through the material of his warm jacket. He had zoned out after recalling the memory and you were just trying to bring him back down to earth. âJoel?..â You attentively asked as he looked over his shoulder at you. âSorry darlin.â Didnât mean to zone out like that. Jusâ yâknow get a little emotional thinkinâ about her isâall.â He murmured.
âHey, it's okay. Sounds like you have a lot of wonderful memories of her, Joel. I have to ask..what the hell is the âdad tax?ââ
Joel felt a warm chuckle creep up his throat as he latched the metal clip around Texâs halter. âOh, the dad tax? Sâjusâ a silly thing I came up with after she made me carry all of her candy bags for hours. Felt like it was only fair if I got a few pieces of her loot.â He responded with a casual shrug as he let Tex out of his stall so it would be easier to brush him down.
âOh, I agree. That sounds perfectly fair. Man, I'd absolutely kill to have a Reese's peanut butter cup or a kit-kat. Did you end up being persuaded to dress up with her as well?â You picked up the curry comb from the grooming box before gently rubbing soothing circles into Texâs furry coat to lift up any dirt or debris.
âFuck.â He nearly groaned. âReeseâs were my favorite. I used to stick a few of them in the freezer and eat them after they got nice and chilled. It was like my guilty pleasure midnight snack. Oh, yeah I dressed up with her alright. Used to go all out with my costume as well. Whatever was gonna make her happy, yâknow?â
âOh my gosh, I used to do the same thing too! Iâd stick an entire roll of them in the freezer. That was really the only way to eat them.â You softly giggled as Tex let out an appreciative grunt when you had found an itchy spot near his withers. âWas there a favorite character that you dressed up as?â
Joel pondered for a moment as he flipped through the memories in his mind of all the Halloween costumes he had dressed up in with Sarah. âDamn, thatâs a good question darlin.â There was one year we dressed up as Iron Man and the Hulk. Sarah insisted on being the Hulk of course. We did Sherlock Holmes and Watson for one year as well.â
âWow, I would have definitely given yâall all of my candy if you trick-or-treated on my block. All the neighborhood kids had some lame costumes I swear. The best one I ever saw was a trio of girls dressed up as the Sanderson Sisters. I nearly gave them my whole goddamn bowl of candy.â
âWoah. The Sanderson Sisters? Those chicks are wicked.â He chuckled warmly. âAlthough, Binx was my favorite character out of the entire movie.â
âOh, I loved Binx too. Dani was my personal favorite. She was such a cool kid.â You peeked over the top of Texâs withers as you finished currying the dirt from his coat. You felt the heat rise to the highest point of your cheeks when you found that Joel was already looking at you. He looked away quickly of course and cleared his throat.
A comfortable silence washed over the two of you as you got into a groove with brushing down Tex.
Joel broke the silence a few minutes later after he had finished picking out clumps of dirt and rocks from Texâs hooves. âSo, now that the weather is changinâ and Spring is gonna be here soon..I wonât be on patrol during the late night shift. So uhâwe can..spend some more time together if youâd like? Mâsorry that I've been absent for a while. Maria told me that you were wonderinâ about me.â
You paused your present actions with a soft sigh as you dropped the brush into the grooming box with a soft thud. âSometimes I struggle with having a rational thought. Iâassumed that maybe you were blowing me off or something. Or that maybe you didnât want to be my friend. It was so fucking silly for me to think that way, but my brain is a warzone a lot of time. It plays tricks on me..Maria told me that she assigned you, Tommy, and a few other men on the late night patrol because..you found something disturbing in the woods?..â
Joel could feel his jaw clench inwards as his fist tightened around the brush that he was holding. Images of those charred women sprung into his mind as he shook his head tightly. âDarlin,â iâm sorry that it seemed like I was blowinâ you off. I would never do that to ya. I donât think it is silly for you to think that way. My brain does shit like that too. Sâokay that you were feelinâ that way. I jusâ genuinely felt bad, but it was out of my control yâknow?â His head drooped slightly as he let out a slightly agitated sigh. It wasnât directed at you, it was just his present frustrations. He and Tommy had lost track of the raiders and where they were headed. He felt like he had failed you, and the town.
âJoel, Maria wouldnât tell me what you and Tommy found in the woods that night. Can you please tell me? I know it was out of your control, and when Maria told me the reason why I genuinely felt terrible. I can only imagine how exhausting these past couple of months have been for you.â
The energy seemed to take a drastic dip as Joel met your gaze once more. His jaw unclenched from the tight position it was currently held in. He wanted to tell you what he saw. He really did, but he promised both Tommy and Maria that he would not disclose the details to you. His lips parted as a sigh slipped past. He looked defeated as his shoulders slumped inwards. âBeanie, I'm sorry but I canât tell you what we found.â He uttered softly.
âJoel, why canât you tell me? I know I shouldnât pry, but Maria told me that it was concerning and thatââ
He cut you off with a gruff response as he raked his fingers through his salt and pepper dusted hair. âBeanie, I canât tell you. Please donât ask me again.â He nearly pleaded as his eyes bore deeply into yours.
âOkay.â You meekly responded. âIâwonât ask again. Iâm sorry.â You sounded just as defeated as he did.
Fuck.
This is where Joel struggled the most in conversations. When every fiber in his being could sense the mood shifting and churning, he didnât know how to bring it back to a calm place. This was usually the moment where he would snap and say the wrong thing. He could feel the word vomit pulsating on his tongue like bile. He didnât want to keep secrets from you. Not when your friendship was just starting to bud like new sprouts through the permeating frost.
âIâm sorry too. I donât want to keep secrets from ya darlin.â I jusâ hope you can understand.â
Please. Please understand.
âJoel, itâs okay. I understand, and I'm not going to hold this against you or anything I promise.â You responded reassuringly.
He let out a visible sigh of relief as he dropped his hand from tugging at the roots of his hair to his side. âOkay, good.â He softly rasped.
After you finished brushing down Tex, Joel led him back into his stall before latching the door shut. âI take it you never found Ellie or Dina? Maybe theyâre at breakfast already.â He set Texâs halter back on the hook alongside his stall before he shoved his hands deep within the pockets of his worn out faded jeans.
âI didnât see them when I came in. Maybe they are at breakfast like you said? Regardless, I appreciate you suggesting last night that I go and spend some time with the horses.â
âOf course darlin.â I jusâ know what itâs like to struggle nâfeel like you ainât have no one there to support ya. Horses are good listeners. Better listeners than I am.â
âI disagree. You are a good listener, Joel. You didnât make me or my feelings feel small or insignificant last night. Youâre a good friend.â You meant every word as a small smile tugged on the corner of his lips.
âWell, thank you. Guess I can do somethinâ right huh?â He chuckled softly.
âHey, donât sell yourself short, okay?â
âI wonât darlin.ââ He seems the least bit convincing as his eyes are averting from making contact with you. Youâd accept his response, for now.
After leaving the stables, Joel accompanied you to your shop. He could have gone home, but after not seeing you for quite some time, he felt like he could sacrifice his sleep a little longer. So while you were whipping up two lattes, he was rearranging your back storage area so that there was no chance that a sack of sugar would potentially fall on your unsuspecting head.
âHey, Beanie?â His voice sounded slightly strained from the heavy lifting he was doing.
âYeah, Joel? Everything alright back there?â
âPeachy.â He grunted softly as he set the sack of sugar down. âGot a question for ya.â
âShoot.â
âYour horse, Tess. Did ya name her yourself or did she have that name previously.â He was curious. It was evident in his tone as he wiped a bit of sweat that had beaded upon his brow.
âI named her myself. Why do you ask?â
âJusâ wonderin.â I uhâhad a partner named Tess. Tommy and I met her after outbreak day. The three of us became a ruthless team. Anyway, we were together for as long as I can remember. We relied on each other heavily. âSpecially after Tommy up nâleft me for the fireflies. She was my partner nâcrime. The brains of our operation and I probably wouldnât have survived very long if it wasnât for her. Your horse..just reminded me of her sâall.â He missed Tess. He missed her more than he liked to admit and even though time had passed since her death, he still wished that she lived. He imagined that she would have found ultimate peace in Jackson. She deserved that and more than what Joel thought he could offer her.
His voice was less strained and sounded closer in proximity as you turned and faced him with a mug outstretched towards him. âDid..she die?â You softly asked.
He somberly nodded as he gently grasped the mug in his hand. The steam slowly rose from the top and kissed his skin as he leaned back against the counter. âShe went out a goddamn hero though. Saved me and Ellie from a hoard of infected. Sacrificed herself so that we would live. She was gânna die anyway. Got bit. Still feel like sometimes I failed her. Coulda done more to keep her safe. She deserved fuckinâ better.â He bitterly sighed with a shake of his head.
âHey, I'm sure Tess wouldnât want you to be feeling like this Joel. She doesnât think that you failed her. She doesnât think that at all. Sheâd want you to forgive yourself Joel.â You reached over and gently touched his bicep as he choked back a strained laugh.
âYeah? Maybe. Jusâ never was able to give her what she truly wanted.â
âWhat couldnât you give her, Joel?â You softly prompted him.
âMy heart.â He uttered just above a whisper as his gaze slowly fell upon your face. You could see the glassy look in his irises as his lower lip ever-so slightly wobbled under the soft glow of the fairy lights dangling above.
You could feel your heart straining against the figurative strings in your chest cavity as you looked upon his sunken features. âJoel, itâs not too late to tell her how you feel.â You murmured.
âWhat?â He looked puzzled as his brows furrowed. He let out a soft sniffle as he dragged the tip of his thumb across his nose. âHow can I do that?â
âWrite to her. Write her a letter straight from your heart Joel.â
âHowâs that supposed tâwork? She ainât ever gonna see it.â
âYou just have to believe that she will see it. If you write down how you feel, and all the things that you wish that you could have told her, youâll be letting that part of yourself go. That part where you feel like youâre to blame for her death. Pen and paper. Write it all down.â You softly encouraged him.
âWill you read it..after I write it?â His tone was timid, unlike his natural gruff nature as he picked at the skin around his cuticles out of a nervous habit.
âIf youâd like me to read it then I will.â
âPinky promise?â He softly requested.
You were already offering him your pinky as he slowly wrapped his thicker weathered finger around your own and gently squeezed.
âPinky promise, Joel.â
Spring was in full bloom now as the earth turned green and sprouted new flowers and life in every corner. Joel was only having to patrol in the early mornings with Tommy. The sun was warm on his skin as he was hunched over in the tall grasses with a leather notebook and pen resting in his lap. Both Tex and Timber were peacefully grazing a short distance away as Tommy was cleaning his rifle. He glanced over at his brother with a curious expression on his face as he watched him scribble something on one of the blank pages.
âWhatcha writinâ in there big brother?â He asked with piqued interest.
âA letter.â Joel murmured.
âTo who?â
Joel let out a sigh as he closed the notebook on the pen before looking over at his younger brother.
âTess.â
Tommy had an unreadable expression on his face as he tightly nodded. For a moment Joel thought his brother had nothing else to say until a hand reached out and gently squeezed his shoulder.
âSay hi to her for me. Will ya? Miss the hell outta her.â Tommy mumbled softly.
âMe too. I miss her a lot. I just hope sheâs with her husband and son. Hope theyâre all together.â Joel responded mournfully as he opened the notebook once more.
Tommy felt a tear slowly roll down his cheek before he quickly wiped it away.
Godspeed Tess.
Joel found himself getting lost in his present thoughts and emotions as he poured his heart out onto the parchment. His words bled like the ink from his pen that was clutched tight in his fist. His knuckles transformed to a stark white shade.
Hey, Tess. Itâs Joel. Iâve never fuckinâ written a letter in my goddamn life, so I apologize if this is absolute horse shit. Iâll salvage what I can. Itâs the least I can do for you Tess. Anyway, lately iâve found myself doinâ a lot of reflectin.â Can ya believe that? Me? Joel hardass Miller expressing his emotions? Ellie and I made it to the fireflies. Iâm sure by now you know what happened so iâll spare the details. Do you remember when you told me to save who I could save? Well, I did. I saved her. Iâd do it all over again if I had to. Man, I used to think of that kid as cargo. Now, I think of her as if she was my own daughter. They were gonna kill her, and I couldnât let that happen so I did what I had to do. Ainât proud of it, but sheâs alive and that's all that matters to me even though she hates me. I couldnât live without her. The truth is, I wish you were here. Youâd love Jackson. This community has it all figured out. We coulda lived a life at peace together, you and me. You deserved the world, and I'm sorry I could never give that to you. You never asked anythinâ of me. Never begged me to feel for you back, but fuck, I loved you. I loved you Tess. I think you knew. It was unspoken between us, but it was there. I should have told you when I had the chance. Well, I'm tellinâ ya now. I know one day I'll get to thank you for savinâ Ellie and I. You went out a fuckinâ hero. Youâre the reason why I'm alive. I know I need to forgive myself for your death. I know I canât go on livinâ and blaminâ myself. Itâs hard. Itâs so fuckinâ hard, but iâm going to try. I hope that you are at peace. Yâknow I ainât believe in there beinâ a Heaven, but I hope thatâs where youâre at. I hope your husband and son are there with you. I hope you get to hug them tight. Sarah too. Bill and Frank. I hope youâre all together now. If you see my baby girl, can you please tell her that daddy loves her? Keep her safe. Hold her close fâme.
Iâll see ya again one day. Till then, I'll do better. I promise.
- Your Texas
Joel let a few tear drops drip along the paper before he wiped them away. He felt a weight being lifted off his shoulders as he was releasing the burden that weighed him down. It lifted from his being, floating like a cloud in the sky as it dissipated to dust. Tess never blamed him for her death. She never held it against him. She only wished that she had more time with him in this cruel unforgiving world.
When Joel returned from patrol in the late afternoon, he found himself in your shop. The door was propped open with a heavy ceramic pot as a warm spring breeze drifted past his covered shoulder blades. Your shop was peacefully quiet sans the record player crackling to the tune of Queen. The song playing was âYouâre My Best Friendâ
How sweetly fitting.
He could hear your soft humming through his good ear as he walked around the counter. âBeanie? Yâback here darlin?ââ His voice traveled like the breeze as you looked up from the mug you were currently painting. Normally youâd paint in your shed at home, but today you decided to kill some time and paint at the shop.
âIâm back here Joel.â You softly responded as your paint brush delicately dragged across the ceramic.
The first thing you noticed was Joelâs bare arms in your peripheral and the way his hair had one stray curl that dangled over his forehead in a soft swoop. His cinnamon brown eyes landed in a soft gaze across your face as he leaned his arm up against the wall. You liked to call this stance the âJoel lean.â Although, this information was kept private.
âWhatâre you paintinâ today?â He asked intriguingly.
âVines and tiny little flowers.â You held the mug up in his direction so he could observe what you had completed so far.
âBeautiful.â He rasped. âListen, you got any plans this evenin?ââ He was fidgeting with his fingers now as he awaited your response.
You gently set the mug down on the little drying table before wiping your hands on your paint stained apron. âI was going to head home in an hour or so to make dinner and then settle in with a good book probably. Why do you ask?â
âCome with me to the Tipsy Bison.â He blurted out suddenly, catching you off guard.
âIâve never been.â You murmured sheepishly.
âSâokay. You ainât even have to drink. Jusâ would love to share your company. Thereâs music nâdancin.â Thereâs no pressure or nothinâ but it would be fun.â
Was..Joel Miller asking you out on a date right now? An unofficial-official date?
Am I askinâ her out on a date right now?
Yes, you are.
No. I ainât.
You are.
âWonât I stick out like a sore thumb if I'm not drinking?â Truthfully you were looking for a way out of this. It wasnât that you didnât want to go spend time with Joel. You were just intimidated by the thought of having to socialize with other community members of Jackson. You could already feel your anxious thoughts creep up and stain your mind with self-doubt.
âDarlin.â everyone there is gânna be too drunk to care. If anyone has somethinâ to say, they can say it to me. Again, no pressure. I donât wanna stress ya out or anythin.ââ
Be still, my foolish heart.
You chewed down on the inside of your cheek, gnawing on the soft flesh as you could taste copper beading along your tongue. How bad could it really be? Besides, Joel wouldnât let anyone fuck with you. Maybe he would even share a dance with you?
Be still, my foolish heart.
âOkay.â You finally responded. âIâll come with you, on one condition.â
âName your price darlin.ââ He was holding back his grin that was threatening to spread across his lips.
âYou have to dance with me at least once.â You requested.
âDeal.â He didnât even falter on his response as he outstretched his hand towards you to grasp. âWeâll dance the night away.â He shot you a subtle wink.
His hand was warm in your grasp as he gently eased you up from the chair you were sitting in. You could feel the rough ridges from years of scarring, but despite this, his hands were beautiful. The ridges reminded you of mountain peaks that would nearly touch the clouds. His scars were littered about like constellations in the night sky. Some were deeper than others and you could only imagine how many times the skin on his knuckles had been split open. How many times they bled, how many times heâd hiss under his breath as the healing scabs would flake off.
How would he react if he saw your own scars? Would he shy away or would he trace them delicately? Kiss the pain away with gentle words. Promise you that no harm would come upon you again. Would he hold you close? Murmur into your hair an oath kept against his heart. Would he protect you? Kill for you?
Of course he would.
You just hadnât a clue what this night would bring.
One thing was for certain, you were eager to find out.

Episode 5: TURBO
Summary:
After closing your eyes for a moment on a treetop, you notice a piece of paper lying on the ground with something written on it. This results in a wild beginning for an encryption, thoughts and fears that come up and finally a meeting with the prototype. And a little character development in between. Can it get any worse? Yes, it can.
Notes:
Ahhhh, folks I'm sorry it's taking me so long. It's just that lately I've been looking at my work and thinking things like âthere's not enough personality involvedâ or âthere's not enough description of the situationâ. Personally, I hate losing the thread when I'm reading, not knowing where I am. That's why I try to keep it simple, with thoughts and extra descriptions. I took a look at my first chapters ever, from the âTo Understand The Soulâ and âThe Geniusâ fan fiction, and I have to say...it's fucking shit writing. I wouldn't say I'm bad at writing overall, but my very first chapters are so unbelievably dogshit that I wouldn't be surprised if people stopped reading them right away. Well, it doesn't matter. Enough yapping, have fun reading this chapter, and pay attention to the details!
---
Beginning of the last week.
168 hours remain until the Hour of Joy.
You can't sleep. Since you've been here, in Critter Valley, you've highly slept for minutes.
It wasn't that you weren't physically able to do it. Your mind is just... somewhere else. The constant clicking of your internal clock, simultaneously thinking of the plan and the imminent rise guided by the prototype and CatNap: The Hour of Joy.
You're in a pretty shitty position; either you report the uprising of the two, prevent yourself from being dragged into it and avoid a lot of deaths. Or you don't report it, wait and see how everything goes and continue to watch the critters.
No matter what you choose, it looks damn bad for you. I wonder if the people out there would give you protection because you're doing their dirty work. After all, they're relatively fickle, like when you write insider information about critter relationships in the reports.
But there's no light at the end of the tunnel for you, you've already gone through most of the scenarios in your head. Trying to kill CatNap wouldn't be a good idea, because as long as you can get information about him and the prototype, he's worth something.
Just in case... In case you have to defend yourself or simply get the order to kill one of them, the critters.
Then you would slaughter Kickinchicken.
It's not an objective opinion, it's just yours. When you weren't here yet, but the short three days in this training. So finding out everything that is known about the Critter from the outside was a thorn in your side.
Kickin wasn't special, unlike the others at least, in your opinion.
In the episodes, he was always the joker that nobody took seriously. But it's almost the same here. Even though he's often out and about with Hoppy in the wide open fields of the valley, you can read them both clearly. He's an outsider, and it would hardly be noticeable if he disappeared.
Each of them was special in their own way, just like all critters.
DogDay was the leader, even if he often refused to be. He played the dog of the group, and even if you already know that he used to be a human, he seems to have characteristics of one. He smells damn good, has an outgoing nature and hangs out with the others incredibly often, he's hardly ever alone.
CatNap, who seems to have some kind of relationship with DogDay, was more the outsider of the group. You already noticed this in the Smilling Critter cartoon, as he rarely appeared, and when he did, he didn't play a leading role like the other critters. However, CatNap is a danger to your mission, with this prototype he is planning a riot, and this could ruin everything.
Bubba was the smart one of the group. For you, an absolute no-go and a threat to be killed if necessary. He had already stalked you once, and probably already suspects that you are some kind of spy from the people outside. He often hangs out with the others, seems to have cameras and often stays up late reading books. You had already guessed it: Come near me again and I'll rip you apart.
Crafty and Picky were also sometimes outsiders, but they spend a lot of time together. Whether Crafty is painting and Picky is nearby, they are rarely alone except in the house. Crafty often seems to stay up late at night, while Picky often falls asleep too early, and sometimes outside.
Hoppy was...annoying. She definitely has the best hearing of all, by a long, long fucking way. Sometimes, when you follow them into the woods because they're all talking about this whole fake world, she seems to hear the incredibly quiet rustling of the bushes you're moving in. She always turns her head rapidly in that direction, and the others always look at her as if she's crazy, which is a big advantage for you. After all, you are only a few meters away from them, and if someone were to come looking, it would be a problem.
And then there was him, Kickin. The most annoying, stupid and unnecessary of them all. He can't do anything that the others can, doesn't make anyone laugh with his bad jokes and, in your opinion, should finally disappear. He is discreetly out of place in a group where everyone can do one special thing except him. If you could, you'd probably ask the scientists why they created someone like him in the first place.
But in the overall situation it looks unimportant, especially right now.
Although you are not asleep, you have rested for an hour, here, in this quiet place. At the top of the huge tree crown, the biggest tree in the whole forest.
It went like this: you opened your eyes, disgusted by the metallic feeling, and stood up. Then you cracked your limbs, the unpleasant 'click' sound, which sounded more like a doll, reminded you of the whole situation again.
There was a note there.
But you didn't grab it straight away. A quick glance to the right, left and upwards. Then you listen for thirty seconds to see if there is anyone nearby or if there might be something like a quiet message from the scientists coming through your ears. Because nothing came and you didn't see anything, you finally pick up the note.
It read:
T U R B O
W hvwby mcif dcksfg ct cpgsfjohwcb ofs ibweis, Foh.
Cqn xcqnab mxw'c bnnv cx twxf cqjc hxd'an j byh, fqrlq rb j pxxm cqrwp.
Z'cc fwwvi pfl r uvrc kyrk nzcc yvcg lj sfky.
Fkyjw fqq, dtz uwtgfgqd bfsy yt pstb bmt dtz bjwj gjktwj ymnx...wfy.
- LNKPKPULA
The only thing you think when you see the paper is, "What is that?".
Standing in the middle of the forest, on both feet and standing up straight, you look around again. No one to the left, no one to the right, but something is wrong. This feeling that you're standing in the wrong place, and when you see yourself right here, with this paper in your 'hands'.
You don't need a minute, if at all seconds. It happens automatically, you tense your hands so that your claws come out, which you can't see under the long gloves but don't change anything. Then you tense your tail, you feel the metallic sensation with the next step and have to try hard not to gag. But within a second, you tear your claws into the tree, pull yourself upwards and push yourself further and further with your sharp tail until you are sitting on the treetop again.
Is this a message? Is it written in another language or what is this?
No matter how you think about it, it was pure gibberish. The letters don't fit together logically, the heading on the paper made no sense and everything looked like it was written by a toddler.
But then, the very next time you look at the white paper and the black ink, you understand.
It is encrypted.
You immediately pull out your own notepad from your backpack, wipe over the pages with your notes about the individual critters, and finally land on a free page. You hastily grab a pen and place the two pages on the crown of the tree. You lean against the trunk, spread your disgusting, unnatural-feeling legs and look at the page again.
The text is encrypted, but in what way? It looks like random letters thrown around, it doesn't make a bit of sense, and there's nowhere to start.
You look at the page lying on your legs. The Black Tine had already dried a long time ago, but you go over and confirm what your eyes have already told you. You look at the heading.
Turbo. Turbo? Is that a reference to something? Maybe Hoppy, because she's the fastest of the critters? Or maybe to one of the scientists from outside? Is one of them called Turbo? Or maybe spelled 'obrut' backwards?
This brought to mind the next problem you would have to solve:
Who left me this encrypted message?
You think, but somehow no answer really seems right. You may be clever, but you can't just string together facts that don't exist to come up with a solution. Somehow, however, only two people seem plausible:
The scientist who looked after me, out there. Or the prototype.
Looking at the paper, you notice something that you should have seen beforehand based on your powers of observation. In the last paragraph, or the last word of the paper, there was a minus sign, it looks like a signature.
LNKPKPULA. L-N-K-P-K-P-U-L-A. It has just as many letters as the word 'prototype'. Wait a minute...
Could it be!
You look at the paper again, but this time at the heading: Turbo. The word was obviously scrambled, but it looked like a clue to you. Because when the signature reads the word 'prototype', you already have the first clue.
From LNKPKPULA to Prototype.
You let the pen in your hand sink slowly to the blank page, slowly and surely, although your mind is already going ahead, your hand follows.
4 letters back! That must be it! L to P are 4 positions in the alphabet! It is a Caesar cipher!
Your hand glides over the still blank paper and smears it. You are completely in the flow, your ears pricked up for your surroundings, your arms for the perfect movements when deciphering and your legs for holding the paper.
L (12) â P (16) â +4
N (14) â R (18) â +4
K (11) â O (15) â +4
P (16) â T (20) â +4
K (11) â O (15) â +4
P (16) â T (20) â +4
U (21) â Y (25) â +4
L (12) â P (16) â +4
A (1) â E (5) â +4
Your eyes catch sight of the paper, your mind is already thinking, while your body barely moves. There is something like a cool breeze on the back of your neck, which brings your consciousness back to the here and now.
So the prototype, why does he write in encrypted form? Is he worried and afraid that someone will find the note before I do? No, I don't have time to think about it, first I have to decrypt the entire document!
For anyone, the view would probably have been surreal: You, a rat-looking critter, on the top of a giant tree with a killer look while you scribble on a paper like a madman.
Your tail hung slightly from the crown, but you were far too busy to pay the slightest bit of attention. Every letter, every punctuation mark was burned into your brain as you slowly but surely deciphered each character of the message.
It would have taken anyone else hours to decipher the pattern and then every single letter, but you're not just anyone.
And that's exactly what you wanted to find out, who exactly were you before this rat? Why were you turned into a rat and the other critters into these weird cartoon characters? What was the point of it all, apart from sales for the humans out there. Were you perhaps one of the people out there who saw something they shouldn't have?
And now, are you being monitored while you decode this message? Will they kill you for it? Torture you until you give up every single piece of information you have about the prototype? What did the prototype do that they left him as a metallic monster? Or you, that you are a rat freak with pieces of metal on your tail and sharp claws?
Or is it all, exactly that, just a dream? A dream from which you can't wake up or don't want to wake up? And even if all this isn't real, the huge fields of grass, the bright sun and the colorful sky above the clouds, what's the point of it all? Is it the calm before the storm? Before your death arrives? Or were you already dead?
That was exactly your rambling thoughts while decoding the message. Everything, really EVERYTHING seems so fake. Your mental status is getting worse and worse, and maybe, just maybe, you are afraid of what your body will do automatically when you are mentally at the end.
And that was the moment, not only when you finally finished decoding the message, no.
It was also the moment when you could understand the critters, a mixture of compassion and understanding on a level far above that of an ordinary person.
But finally, after 19 minutes and 46 seconds, you had finished decoding the prototype's message.
It was difficult to first crack the pattern, and then to decipher the most important letters, resulting in whole sentences that finally made sense. A cramp in the hand, like students when they write an exam for too long, stiff legs like an athlete who has just run a marathon, and an empty head, like someone who has just come from a parent's funeral.
Your eyes, half open, finally wander over the full sheet with your writing. No more logically incongruous letters, clear words with a clear message behind them.
F L A W S
I think your powers of observation are unique, Rat.
The others don't seem to know that you're a spy, which is a good thing.
I'll offer you a deal that will help us both.
After all, you probably want to know who you were before this...rat.
- PROTOTYPE
You may not like to admit it, but the encryption was damn clever:
Every single sentence and paragraph is coded according to the heading. So a shift from T to F is +14 letter positions and the first sentence was constructed with this exact shift. But you weren't stupid and wanted to test every way first, which is why you tested the letters 'FOH' first. And your theory was correct, with the shift the word 'RAT' came out.
So you carried on, quickly deciphered the most important letters and brought the sentences to a logical conclusion.
But what was the point of the message? You already knew that when you deciphered the signature 20 minutes ago.
A meeting.
Between you and the prototype. He seems to want to make some kind of 'deal' with you that "will help us both". Of course, you don't trust him one bit, especially after you saw and heard how he treated CatNap. It was pure manipulation, which CatNap, the idiot, didn't even seem to notice.
But he had apparently had something to do with the prototype in the past, he called it 'Theodore'. Maybe you could blackmail CatNap with the name too? Force him to say it, otherwise you'll go to the other critters and tattle.
But what's important right now is where exactly the prototype wants to meet. Maybe at the same place as with CatNap, or maybe not.
Should I make my way to the spot where he met CatNap?
No , my biggest advantage right now is that neither CatNap nor the prototype know that I know when the Hour of Joy is happening, or that it's happening at all. Neither party knows how much I know, and the prototype is dangerous.
If he's from the outside world, he definitely knows where I am by observation, it doesn't have to be that he knows that I was secretly at the meeting. I have to take advantage of that!
I will stand above that flock of pigeons, and I will control them!
Your eyes fall on the paper again, you haven't really moved from your position, after all, something was still missing.
He certainly doesn't want to meet up in the normal area, where there's a risk of encountering a critter. Certainly not in the Dark Forest either, so somewhere on the edge. But where exactly? The area around the edge of the forest is far too long to simply search, and anyway, when does he want to meet?
You turn, shove your right arm into your backpack and pull out the map showing the whole of Critter Valley. As you pull it out, you feel a slow headache coming on, right above your eyes.
You ignore everything around you, place the map next to the decrypted message and do your best, with all your intelligence, to find any position on the map.
Turbo
Turbo.
Turbo.
T = 20
U = 21
R = 18
B = 2
O = 15
If I assign a number to each letter, then use it as a reference for coordinates, it should work.
It was a guess at best, at least the word turbo made sense in contrast to the whole encryption. Your head feels even worse than before, you haven't thought as much as you have just now in the last few weeks, especially since the critters were all easy to watch.
Then the X-coordinate would be T + U, i.e. 20 + 21 and that is 41. Y would then be the sum of the last two letters, B + O are 2 + 15, i.e. 17 for Y. But what about R? Either it is a height coordinate or simply for a more precise point.
But as you read through the whole message again in your head, letter by letter, word by word, you also read the coordinates off the paper. And as is the case with a coincidence, an absolute coincidence, you don't understand it yourself.
You read the 'R', automatically as 'Right Now', out of pure chance and your tiredness. But even without the indicators of your mental state, no other options were really open to you than to interpret and hope for something pure.
Your gaze lands on the map, the coordinates were far away, on the other side of the valley. Where the employees come at night and exchange the things you wrote down in your notes.
Maybe...Just maybe it was some Force of Nature that chose you. There were so many possibilities that you just didn't understand it, didn't even get the message decoded or something else...Maybe it was fate.
And that's exactly what you're going to find out.
If you were already paranoid, tired and absolutely drenched in adrenaline before, it was even worse now. Before you set off, you had thought about whether it was really the right idea to go. But what did you really have to lose? Does he want to tell the Critters your real identity as a spy? Then you tell them with the Hour of Joy, simple as that.
But all the pressure, panic and adrenaline that came up when you were thinking was only because you were already thinking about the situation.
But now it was real. Every few seconds you had the feeling that someone might jump out of the nearest bushes, fire a shot or let out a scream. The forest had never been so damn quiet, you couldn't hear a single sound apart from your footsteps.
The green grass, the gray stones, the brown trees and the sun above you are a sign that you are still close to the valley. The Dark Forest is still too far away.
Every few seconds you pull up your gloves as if you had to attack someone. Even unconsciously, your hands were both tense and so your claws were out, but you couldn't see them because of them. You are quite happy that you found these gloves.
"Rat..."
You almost jump in fright like a cat. You turn around quickly and are confronted with nothing but darkness, from which a certain tension comes towards you. You don't see it, the prototype, the darkness takes any light that was in this happy world and swallows it up.
The only thing that showed you he was here was the voice. Just like the observed meeting between the Thing and CatNap, it was rough and sounded more like a machine. It doesn't help that you don't hear a shape to the voice.
"So you...decoded it." The voice gives you chills, a shiver that runs down your spine, telling your instincts that you absolutely must take a step backwards. You do so immediately, and say your first words since you've been here in Critter Valley.
"It wasn't hard." That was all you said, perhaps even with a slightly lowered voice, after all, your normal pitch would seem like a child in contrast to his.
"For someone... like you." That's all the voice says, but now at least you can see something in the infinite darkness that lies before you. This metallic hand slowly but surely sticks out of it, your eyes follow the fine fingers as they move.
"And who exactly would that be?" Bingo. You can steer the conversation directly in the direction you want, find out what he knows.
"I'll tell you...if you do me...a favor." The voice becomes even rougher than before, as if he doesn't have much time.
"And the would be?" You're getting really tired of this small talk, the first day with the critters where you didn't talk and now that you're both just answering as briefly as possible.
"You have to help CatNap...convince the others to join an uprising." That's the longest sentence you've heard him say so far without pausing again.
"What kind of Uprising?" You say, full of confusion and inner conviction that he doesn't know you were eavesdropping on him and CatNap's conversation.
"You already know that."
That was the moment when you felt like you were finally dead. Your eyes widen, your legs tremble slightly, your breathing quickens and your heartbeat becomes so loud that you can hear it through your ears and it absolutely drowns your thoughts.
The adrenaline doesn't even let you think, let alone fully understand the situation. So now you were in his Mercy, your lie was badly received, and even worse... The power of this conversation now fell into his mechanical fingers.
"I already know...How it will all end...Theodore won't make it and that's...a shame." You're only half aware of the words, the rest passes you by and disappears into the huge forest behind you. The fingers move slightly, making a 'come closer' gesture, which you don't return. "Besides... I have some information for you... which is incredibly valuable... but which you won't write in your report."
Information that is worth a lot, but that I can't write in my report? What exactly does he mean?
"And that information would be?" If your shaky voice, your gasping breaths and your hunched posture didn't already give it away, you were extremely nervous. You weren't even that nervous when you were about to be caught spying by one of the critters. Because there you always had the chance to somehow talk your way out of it or simply disappear, but right now, the situation was not in your hands at all, but in this mechanical one in front of you.
"The Critters... want to break out of here in four days."
Dawn of the Last Four Days.
96 hours remain until the outbreak and 168 until the Hour of Joy.
---
Can it get any worse? I mean, your mental state, the prototype knowing about your eavesdropping and the fact that the Smilling Critters want to break out? Oh yes, it can! Well, the next story to get an update is my Hold on fanfiction, after all, it's time to write about the year class trip. (in between, of course, another chapter for the Arcane Story, the second season is coming soon and I really need to finish everything). I hope you are all doing well! Leave kudos and a comment!

Carlos the Capybara: Flute Player and Doughnut Lover

Once upon a time, in a peaceful and secluded glade nestled deep within the heart of the Amazon rainforest, lived a capybara named Carlos. Now, capybaras are known for their gentle and sociable nature, but Carlos was no ordinary capybara. He had a unique passion that set him apart from the rest of his capybara friends - he played the flute, and he played it with remarkable skill.
Every morning, as the sun's first rays filtered through the dense foliage, Carlos would sit by the tranquil river that meandered through the glade. There, he would take out his wooden flute, lovingly carved from a fallen tree branch, and begin to play. The soothing melodies that flowed from his instrument resonated through the rainforest, enchanting all who heard them.
Carlos's music was a gift to the creatures of the rainforest. Birds would flutter down from the treetops to listen, and monkeys would pause their chatter to appreciate the harmonious tunes. But there was one particular fan of Carlos's music who was always in attendance - a mischievous and playful toucan named Tico.
Tico adored Carlos's flute music, and every morning, he would perch on a nearby branch, his vibrant beak agape in delight as he listened to the captivating melodies. Carlos and Tico developed an extraordinary friendship, united by their shared love for music and their boundless curiosity about the world.
Now, while Carlos was a virtuoso on the flute, he had another secret love - doughnuts. In the heart of the rainforest, there wasn't a bakery in sight, but Carlos was a resourceful capybara. He had discovered a hidden grove where wild fruit trees grew. Among them was a tree that bore round, doughnut-like fruits with a sweet and delectable taste. Carlos couldn't resist them, and he indulged in these rainforest doughnuts every chance he got.
One sunny morning, as Carlos was playing his flute by the riverbank, Tico decided it was time to repay his friend's beautiful music. With his vibrant plumage shimmering in the sunlight, Tico soared off in search of the rarest, sweetest treat he could find. After a few graceful loops through the treetops, he returned to Carlos with a beak filled with the most delicious rainforest doughnuts.
Carlos was delighted by Tico's thoughtful gift. They sat together by the river, Carlos playing his flute, and Tico enjoying the sweet treats. The harmonious blend of music and laughter echoed through the glade, filling the rainforest with an atmosphere of pure joy.
From that day forward, Carlos and Tico's friendship grew stronger, and their daily routine became a beloved spectacle in the rainforest. Carlos's flute melodies and the colorful toucan's playful antics brought happiness to all who had the privilege of witnessing their enchanting performances.
And so, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the capybara who played the flute and loved doughnuts found not only the music of his soul but also a true friend who shared in his passion for the extraordinary and the simple joys of life. Together, they brought the rainforest alive with the magic of friendship and music, proving that the most remarkable stories can be found in the most unexpected places.

The Ultimate Holiday Camp Experience: Outdoor Adventures and Endless Fun
When summer arrives, kids eagerly await the freedom and excitement that only a holiday camp can bring. From thrilling outdoor activities to unforgettable friendships, camps offer the perfect blend of learning, adventure, and sheer joy. A well-planned outdoor camp is more than just a break from routine; it's a playground for personal growth and priceless memories. Let's explore why holiday camps are the ultimate destination for kids seeking camp fun and adventure.
A World Beyond the Classroom
In an outdoor camp, learning goes far beyond textbooks. Outdoor environments are ideal for teaching essential life skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership. Imagine kids solving treasure hunts in the woods, building shelters, or learning to navigate with a compass. These activities not only fuel their sense of curiosity but also equip them with practical knowledge that stays with them for life.
Nothing compares to the excitement of an outdoor camp filled with nature trails, bonfires, and starry skies. Kids get to escape their digital routines and immerse themselves in the wonders of nature. Whether it's hiking through lush forests, canoeing on a serene lake, or zip-lining through treetops, outdoor activities help children stay active while fostering a deep appreciation for the environment.
Cultivating Social Skills and Friendships
Camps are social hubs where kids meet peers from different backgrounds, forming bonds that often last a lifetime. Shared adventures like group games, campfire storytelling, or even collaborating on a project promote empathy, communication, and mutual respect. For many, these friendships are the heart of camp fun, creating a sense of belonging and community.
4. Building Confidence and IndependenceA holiday camp provides a safe environment for kids to step out of their comfort zones. Whether theyâre trying archery for the first time or leading a team challenge, each new experience builds self-confidence. By tackling challenges independently, kids develop resilience and a sense of accomplishment that empowers them in all areas of life.
From water balloon fights to talent shows and theme nights, camp fun is all about creativity and enjoyment. Holiday camps are brimming with activities that cater to diverse interests, ensuring every child has something to look forward to. For those who love the arts, camps often offer music, painting, or drama sessions. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy everything from soccer matches to rock climbing, ensuring their days are packed with laughter and excitement.
Every camp has its unique traditions and rituals that make the experience even more special. It might be a secret handshake, a song sung around the fire, or a cherished award ceremony at the end of the session. These traditions create a sense of continuity and belonging, making kids eager to return year after year.
Health Benefits of Active Play
Outdoor camps encourage physical activity, keeping kids healthy and energetic. Activities like hiking, swimming, and obstacle courses improve strength, coordination, and endurance. Moreover, the fresh air and sunshine provide a natural boost to their immune systems and mental well-being, helping them return home rejuvenated and ready for the new school year.
An outdoor camp incorporates adventure-based learning, where kids face challenges that require critical thinking and teamwork. From navigating a ropes course to strategizing in a scavenger hunt, these activities teach kids how to analyze situations, make decisions, and collaborate effectively, skills that are invaluable in school and beyond.
A Break for Parents
While kids revel in the adventure, a holiday camp also offers parents peace of mind, knowing their children are engaged in meaningful and safe activities. Itâs an opportunity for parents to relax or focus on their own projects, knowing their kids are in good hands, gaining independence, and having a blast.
Memories That Last a Lifetime
Finally, the memories created at camp are priceless. Every hike, every new skill learned, and every shared laugh becomes part of a treasured story kids will tell for years to come. These experiences shape their character, fuel their imagination, and provide a foundation of cherished moments theyâll carry into adulthood.
Holiday camps are so much more than a seasonal pastimeâ they're a gateway to growth, adventure, and joy. Whether it's the thrill of an outdoor camp or the simple pleasures of sharing camp fun with new friends, the benefits are endless. For parents seeking an enriching and exciting summer experience for their kids, a holiday camp is the perfect choice. So, pack those bags, lace up those hiking boots, and let the summer adventure begin!

Rock Climbing For Teens - Travel The World And Reach New Heights - The Road Less Traveled

Climbing and Adventure Travel
If it seems to you that rock climbing has been having a bit of a âmomentâ lately, thatâs really no accident. Quite a few things have been bringing rock climbing further into the mainstream over the last few years, including the billions of views that rock-climbing videos have attracted on socials, and competition climbing making its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics.Â
But thereâs something else that people of all ages should know about rock climbing: not only is it a really great activity for all-round physical and mental health, it can take you across the world on different adventures and open the door to a whole new type of travel.
So, if your teen has been getting into, or showing an interest in rock climbing recently, maybe a middle or high school adventure program would be great fit to help them further their interest and realize where climbing can take them - Think the French Alps, the Colorado Mountains, or the National Parks of Maine!
Why is rock climbing such a great thing to do, anyway?Â
Rock climbing might seem like the kind of extremely physical activity that only the strongest and fittest people would be able to do safely and effectively, but thatâs a misconception. Itâs actually an activity most people can participate in and benefit from.Â
However it is most definitely an activity that is âeasy to get to grips with, but difficult to masterâ which is why it's so popular with young people. The constant challenge of new routes, developing your own strength and technique, and the overwhelming joy and satisfaction when a route or problem is conquered keeps climbers coming back, and chasing that adrenaline rush!Â
Climbing with The Road Less Traveled - What's different?
Many teens start climbing in gyms, summer camps, or local sports centers, which allows them to learn the basics in a man-made environment or wall. Here at RLT we take it one step further as we take students straight onto real rock faces, and get them climbing in some of the best natural environments across the world!
This adds a whole new layer of challenge, and also reward. Reaching the top of a natural rockface and seeing breathtaking views across the treetops, or climbing a cliff with wildlife all around you makes the experience all that more special.
What student travel programs include rock climbing as an activity?Â
Here at The Road Less Traveled (RLT), we design our adventure trips to help young people build their social skills, confidence, environmental stewardship, and a greater sense of service and global responsibility.Â
In other words, when a teen embarks on a high-school adventure program with RLT, they will not âjustâ benefit from an adventure program. What they will receive will be a unique experience that helps shape them into a more rounded person.Â
Along the way, though, they will also get to test and hone their rock-climbing skills â if you choose an RLT program that incorporates this! You can discover those by navigating to our teen travel programs for the summer of 2024, and selecting âRock Climbâ under âActivitiesâ in the left-hand sidebar.Â
With our adventure programs for next year encompassing such stunning parts of the world as the French and Italian Alps, the mountains of Colorado, the pine forests of Maine, and the sun-drenched Costa Brava coastline of Spain â to mention just some of the possibilities â your teen will have ample opportunity to develop their climbing skills, while exploring some of the most breathtaking parts of the world.Â

16 for your pairing of choice?
Things you said . . . when we were I was afraid Chosen pairing: Ikora/Eris (Great Hunt era)
Ikora Rey could not relax for even a moment as she and Eris trekked through the Venusian jungles. Light filtered down in shafts tangible enough to touch, suspended in ash-choked humidity. From her peripheral vision, every play of sunshine across motes of dust or glint on standing pools of water made her look, half-expecting to meet the myriad eyes of an ahamkara, sparkling in satiation at a wish received.
Ahamkara were paracausal mines, liable to be set off with the slightest pressure in thought or word. She'd heard that he only safe way to approach a wish-dragon was with a total lack of desire: the mind must at peace and without want. In all their power, the Guardians made for succulent feed; clarity was the only way to prevent errant shifts in reality and to ensure they stay starved enough to destroy. (Ikora had trained herself out of thinking of the act as killing. Each death was a dandelion's head spread on the wind.)
A classically-trained warlock, she was no stranger to the act of meditation. She had honed her mind to master the storm and void and flame. A veteran of combat and crucible, she'd developed her focus perfectly. But there was something here that captivated unlike anything or anyone encountered in the temples or training grounds, the libraries or battlefields. Something that distracted even beyond the thought of a thousand hungry eyes and salivating mouths hiding in the canopies, stalking, waiting â
Eris had gotten ahead of her by a pace. In-between fights, the hunter took off her helmet, and some of her outer layers of armor. Ikora watched her from behind; the curve of muscle and fat beneath undershirt, the gold halo of sunlight on her ruffled salt-and-pepper brown hair. She'd cut it before flying out to Venus; 'Too hot to leave it long,' she said, smiling, when she reported to the hangar with a new look and her rucksack.
Ikora slipped, imagined for a fleeting moment the texture of her hair under her fingers â before she caught herself. At the Tower, kindling a crush could spell embarrassment. Out here, it might have deadly consequences.
They walked for a long time, Ikora thinking of anything but the person beside her.
. . .
Eventually, they reached the edge of a grove where a dragon had been spotted earlier. Deciding it best to approach with high energy, full stomachs and untroubled minds, they stopped to eat and rest awhile. Spirit blooms waved lazily in the soft breeze. Rain pattered on the treetops, but they were sheltered from it.
"You've been out of sorts, Ikora,'" Eris finally remarked, putting away their mess kits as Ikora refilled canteens from a crystal clear spring. "What's the matter?"
Ikora took a long drink of water. Sat beside her companion as she considered her options.
A lie was a sort of mismatch between what is, and what is wanted, the gradient from which ahamkara fed. She wouldn't risk giving them even a morsel, so she answered honestly: "I shouldn't discuss it near beings who derive their strength from desire."
A smile tugged at the corners of Eris' brown eyes and full lips. Ikora looked away, unwilling to tempt herself further. "Sounds like quite the problem to have on a planet full of creatures who feast on that sort of thing."
She sighed and leaned back against the fluffy moss and thick ferns of the forest floor. Looked up at the thickets of growth overhead, the soaring birds and perpetually storm-yellow clouds in the gaps overhead. "I don't know what to do."
"I'm just a hunter, so I may be wrong . . ." Eris began, "but I think the best way to avoid wanting something is to have it."
She twisted over so that her upper half hung above Ikora, one arm on each side of her. Her eyes glistened with as much joy as their quarry. "What do you say?"
Ikora could not avoid Eris' gaze, nor did she want to.
In the instant she reached up to pull the other woman down, she'd already descended on her, half-parted lips meeting in a kiss that was hungry but not rough, skin tasting of sweat and smoke and alien fruits. Ikora ran her hand through her hair, curls catching on her fingertips; Eris ran her index and middle fingers along her jawline and rested her thumb under her chin, cradling her face for the duration.
When they finally parted, neither was able to stop themselves from beaming. Picking up their arms they moved toward the clearing, Ikora satisfied the ahamkara would find no longing in her heart.
