Dave Zirin at The Nation:
Harrison Butker resides at the bottom of the most majestic mountain in the National Football League: the least important player on the most important team. Butker is the placekicker for the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. He is very good at his job, but no matter how many field goals he sends through the uprights, he is the lowest-caste athlete in the locker room, somewhere behind the assistant strength coaches but ahead of the office interns. (Adam Sandler wrote the song “The Lonesome Kicker” for a reason.)
Yet, even though merely a kicker, Butker’s star is on the rise in spaces far from the football field. Looking like the handsome, dashing villain in a World War II film, he is no longer lonesome. Butker has a new home away from football at the right-wing edge of US politics. Earlier this year, Butker “very intentionally,” as he put it, announced his “traditional Catholic” views while delivering a commencement address at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal-arts school in Kansas. Butker chided the women in the audience for their ambition and expressed the trad-Catholic doctrine that their only true happiness would be as a wife and fertile mother. He praised his own wife, Isabella, saying that she would be “the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother” and expressed his joy over the fact that she has embraced “one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
Butker, true to his predicable anti-LGBTQ views and staunch anti-abortion activism, also criticized “liberal Catholic leaders,” whom he faults with “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.” He also attacked the “tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion” and cried out against “things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media,” which supposedly “all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.” Targeting the male graduates, Butker told them to “be unapologetic in your masculinity,” and to “fight against the cultural emasculation of men.” Happy graduation, everyone!
Butker wants to loudly and proudly spread the belief that the ills of the 21st century are rooted in the resistance of women to get married and “love, honor, and obey” (heavy on the “obey”) their husbands. If this all sounds familiar, it’s the gospel of JD Vance and his contempt for cat-owning single women as well as all women—let’s be real, white women—who don’t see themselves as born to breed. That Butker’s own mother, Dr. Elizabeth Butker, has been a medical physicist at Emory University’s department of radiation oncology since 1988 suggests that he needs less time giving speeches and more time in therapy.
[...]
Butker wants in on this gravy train. He has already garnered headlines for endorsing the insurrectionist cheerer and running enthusiast Senator Josh Hawley, who looks at Butker like Ingrid Bergman stared at Humphrey Bogart. Now, with that friendship in his pocket, he has started a political action committee to encourage Christians to vote for “traditional values.” Its name is UPRIGHT PAC.
[...] Kansas City Chiefs franchise owner Clark Hunt praised Butker for starting the PAC. Hunt’s family has existed in the shadowy right-wing margins of this nation’s politics for generations. (His grandfather the billionaire oil tycoon H.L. Hunt was a white supremacist, and his half-brother Lamar Hunt Jr. is helping to fund the opposition to abortion in Missouri.) [...]
It’s because of Kaepernick’s legacy—and the desire to bury it—that the MAGA GOP is so besotted with Butker. The NFL has traditionally been a cultural space where the right has found comfort, commonality, and votes. Yet there was Donald Trump in 2016 and 2017 calling for NFL boycotts and saying in a Huntsville, Alabama, speech that kneeling players are “sons of bitches” who should be fired. This created confusion among that All-American cross section of men who are NFL fans but also have their nose up Trump’s orange ass. Meanwhile, here is Tim Walz, Mr. Football, running out to the 50-yard-line. In Butker, the hard right—the Christian Zionists braying for the Rapture, the January 6 insurrectionists crying for the freedom to seize the Capitol—finally has a foothold among the NFL players, not just their bosses. Yes, there have always been right-wing players, generations of right-wing Christian quarterbacks, and even more than a few GOP politicians that have come out of the National Football League. But Butker is not just a part of the fellowship of Christian athletes wanting to do Bible study after Wednesday lifts. He sees himself as being in an ideological battle. I have to wonder, though, if he understands the unintended consequences of his political stances so supported by his boss.
Kansas City K Harrison Butker formed a far-right PAC called Upright PAC focused on anti-LGBTQ+, anti-abortion, and anti-IVF extremism.

Your honest view of 5.13? Chenford thoughts too?
hello hello!
Great question.
My first reaction to the episode was that i was bored. So bored. And that opening scene while funny, was nepotism at it's finest. The guy singing is Alexi Hawley's son. oh joy.
Then I had the chance to watch the episode again later in the evening, and I enjoyed it the second time through.
I was bored because of all the chenford specific promos we got gave a lot of the story away - so there weren't any real surprises. Plus that really reminded me of previous seasons when chenford was in the promos but sliced and diced in a way to attract viewers, but what aired was not what was in the promos.
here are my thoughts in no particular order:
+ I loved the scene where they are murder boarding a new job for Tim in John's living room. Shooting through the window at the cast was such a cool perspective as opposed to a camera behind them looking over their shoulder.
+ I loved the focus on Celina - and then indirectly on John. First by Grey and then by Sgt Bradford. With Grey, I really liked that he recognized Celina's natural instinct for trouble and helped her reason out why she felt what she felt. Using logic to explain the instinct. John does not do that with her. He's trying to get her to stop being herself - but Grey teaches her how to lean into her existing skills and parse them out step by step - which when called to testify in court she will definitely have to be able to do.
I hope they spend more time on grading Nolan - he's IMO quite smug and overconfident he's been in this role for what? let's say 4 months and he accts like the best TO there ever was. um no. He's still a rookie in that role and I'm surprised there haven't been more checks and balances around grading him grading others.
+ I loved Angela and Wesley working together. That was fun. I love their dynamic.
+ Everyone inviting themselves to John's house because he has A/C.
+Tim being surprised to see Lucy there - like haven't they been texting all day long? and him with his hands in his pockets to keep himself from touching her? I'm sure he picked up on her being cagey - that she was up to something, but I don't know if he yet realizes WHAT she was up to.
Things I'm concerned about for future episodes:
+ Metro - everyone was so excited to get Tim to that team, so yay that he's not stuck doing paperwork bored out of his mind. But I think Tim being the boot on that team could create challenges for our love birds.
Brutal hours, an LT who wanted to bring on John to the team(what?), these guys do not look like they will be supportive of Tim being in a relationship with a P2. I expect his LT to give him a very hard time about than when she learns of it.
Nyla's warning about sergeants talking. I definitely see something bad happening here with that. Grey will be a useful resource to mitigate any flack there, but he won't be able to stop it entirely.
I think the new role will tap into Tim's military history - and who knows why kind of PTSD can of worms could be opened as a result.
But I think he is going to be challenged in more ways than one - more "fun stuff" for Eric to act out - and seeing how he and Lucy react alone and separately will be interesting to watch and a potential for angst. But I have faith in them
+Keeping Tim in the dark. I get why Lucy didn't want to tell him that she was the architect of his new opportunity. That would put the focus on her, instead of on him. She may have had the idea, but she definitely pulled it off because of everyone else - including Smitty.
Smitty side note - I was yelling at my screen when Lucy made her deal with him - she should have said nothing weird or gross. And sure enough he gave her something gross.
I think Tim forgets that MidWilshire is his family. Yes he's got a new love in Lucy, but even before she got there, he had the love and support of the MidWilshire crew and of course, they were going to work together to get him a better job. So I want someone to tell him what THEY did for him. Whether that's Smitty dropping a hint or Angela telling him. It all started with Lucy, yes, but his whole family kicked in to help.
I am also glad that we are shifting out of heavily chenford episodes. Nolan has been out of the angst for most of the season, and I think he's getting lazy. Next week should be good to remedy that. And We've got Valentine's Day, Chris's return, Metro in action coming up... gonna be a fun remaining episodes.

hi
George: "My mind is like a computer." Jerry: "So what are you gonna do now?" George: "I think I’ll read a book. From beginning to end. In that order." Fogell: "Uh, it's McLovin." Economics Teacher: "In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the… Anyone? Anyone? The Great Depression, passed the… Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered… raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression."
Gob: "I’m gonna build an airport, put my name on it. Why, Michael?" Michael: "So you can fly away from your problems?" Gob: "No, because it’s the only way to get to Hawaii."
JOEY Yes, I do mind! Joey doesn’t share food! The rest of the group laughs, but Joey is serious. CHANDLER Come on, Joey. It’s just one fry.
HOLT It is now 9:01. This meeting was scheduled for 9:00. Punctuality is crucial. Where is Detective Peralta? AMY Sir, he’s on his way. He texted that he’s stuck in traffic. HOLT (sternly) Traffic is not an excuse. He should have planned accordingly. JAKE bursts into the room, out of breath. JAKE Sorry, Captain! The traffic was insane! HOLT You are late, Detective. And lateness is one of my biggest pet peeves. JAKE I know, I know. I’ll be better, I promise.
PHIL Hey, Claire, where should I put these? CLAIRE (taking the box) I’ve told you a thousand times, Phil. Everything has its place. This closet is organized by category and subcategory. PHIL (looking around) Wow, you really have everything sorted. CLAIRE It’s my pet peeve when things are out of order. Chaos in the closet means chaos in life. PHIL (smiling) I love your passion for organization. It’s one of the things that makes you, you. CLAIRE (handing him a small bin) Now, take these batteries to the battery drawer. Phil salutes her playfully and heads off, while Claire continues to organize with a satisfied smile.
STANLEY I wait all year for this day. If I don’t get my pretzel, someone’s going to pay. MICHAEL (trying to cut in line) Hey Stanley, buddy, can I cut in line? STANLEY (angrily) Michael, don’t even think about it. Pretzel Day is the one day I won’t tolerate any nonsense. It’s my pet peeve when people mess with my Pretzel Day. DWIGHT (yelling at the server) I want extra salt and no butter! STANLEY (under his breath) If Dwight causes any delays, I swear… Stanley’s rare moment of joy is evident, and everyone knows not to mess with his Pretzel Day.
TERRY Gina, what’s wrong? GINA My computer keeps freezing. It’s my biggest pet peeve when technology doesn’t work. TERRY Let me take a look. Terry tries to fix the computer, but it only makes things worse. The screen turns blue. GINA (in despair) Great. Just great. Now I can’t get any work done. I might as well go home. TERRY (frustrated) We’ll call IT. They’ll fix it. GINA (fuming) IT takes forever. By the time they get here, I’ll have aged ten years. AMY walks by and sees the blue screen. AMY Did you try turning it off and on again? GINA (sarcastically) Oh, brilliant idea, Amy. Why didn’t I think of that? Gina throws her hands up in exasperation while Terry pats her shoulder sympathetically.
BEN Hey, Leslie. How’s the binder project going? LESLIE (cheerfully) Great! But, I just found this binder in the wrong place. It’s my pet peeve when my binders are out of order. BEN (smiling) You and your binders. Want some help? LESLIE (seriously) Yes. Make sure you put the economic development binder in the green section. It’s color-coded for a reason. BEN Got it. Green section. TOM walks in, looking at his phone. TOM Hey Leslie, do you have the binder for the upcoming gala? LESLIE (rifling through binders) Tom, you should know by now that the gala binder is always in the red section. TOM (smirking) Just checking if you’re on your game. LESLIE (defensively) Always.
ANGELA (disapprovingly) Kevin, how do you work in such chaos? It’s my pet peeve when things aren’t organized. KEVIN (shrugging) I know where everything is. ANGELA (sighing) That’s not the point, Kevin. A cluttered workspace leads to a cluttered mind.
RACHEL (reaches for a fry) You don’t mind if I have some of these, do you? JOEY Yes, I do mind! Joey doesn’t share food! The rest of the group laughs, but Joey is serious. CHANDLER Come on, Joey. It’s just one fry. JOEY (to Chandler) You don’t understand! If you let people have one fry, they’ll take more. Then, you’re left with nothing! Rachel tries to sneak another fry, but Joey catches her hand mid-air. JOEY (rising) That’s it! New rule. Joey's food is Joey's food. Got it?

Did a Republican Senator actually have a moment of Sanity? 0_0
Turtle opposing it makes it sound like it isn’t a Trojan Horse, which would be awesome.
I’m cool with giving Republicans the credit for overturning Citizens United if they want to do it. Go GOP. I’ve got an American Flag in here somewheres to raise and wave for anyone to kill Citizens United. I will happily de-partisan for the murder of that evil atrocity that is ruining our country.
I actually was officially registered as an Independent for me entire adulthood until Trump became the Republican nominee for President and I realized that I would never be able to vote Republican in good conscience. I literally didn’t register as a Democrat until 2015-16. I always had this fantasy - since turning 17 and falling in love hate addiction with politics and wanting Ross Perot to be President - of I’ll just vote for the best candidate and not care about party. And then proceeded to prove out every legitimate study that’s ever been done which says whatever way you lean is what you really are and you’re just lying to yourself. But, you know, I COULD have supported and voted for a Republican. In principle. Which was important to me. Never mind that I could, technically, still do that even being registered as a Democrat. Registering Democrat was really nothing but the final acknowledgment that I never would because the Republicans are psychotically evil as a group and, so far as I have been able to tell, pretty much psychotically evil as individuals as well.
No group that would support Trump for President, just on the evidence of what he was like before ascending to political office, can be trusted so long as they allow anyone in their leadership who ever espoused or allowed that support. A group that will support him again after January 6th… honestly, that group should be outlawed.
I would love to be wrong.
The thing I hate most about Republicans (as opposed to what disgusts or morally outrages me, I am talking about personalized hate) is that they turned me into a Democrat.
The Democratic party is far more Conservative and Right Wing than I am. It’s a poor fit for my ideology. What it is for me is pragmatic and practical. Promoting the Democratic party and its goals is the best way for me to accomplish mine. There’s not much glamour or love. I haven’t voted for the Democratic President in their first primary… ever. Even President Obama, who I admit I felt a lot of joy and excitement around his presidency, I actually voted for Biden to be the nominee back then XD. Clinton, like I said, I was in love with Ross Perot. Biden, this last time around, was my third choice in the primaries. My “dream ticket” would be Warren - Sanders at this point. But nothing doing. That’s not happening. There’s the world you want and the world that is. Biden is doing fine. I’ll vote for him again with minimal ennui and be a good little Democrat because the Republican Party is pure evil instead of just a poor fit for what I actually want.
When your choices are: 70% - 90% of what you want with 0% chance of winning, 50% ish of what you want with 50% chance of winning, or 15% - 0% chance of what you want with 50% (or less as the percentage of what I want goes up) chance of winning, the best choice is obvious. It’s just doesn’t feel great.
Again, I would love to be wrong. I would love to be convinced that there’s a practical and reasonable way to get more of what I want and less of what I don’t.
If the Republicans want to sanity up and power down their toxic evil. I’m really cool to reconsider all my stances. Hell, if any Republicans want to be sane and decent human beings, I am happy to cheer them on.
If the American people decide that they want some group to the left of the Democratic Party to be a viable potential that could make the current Democratic Party positions the far right positions in this country, I would be ecstatic and eagerly reregister.
:/
I just don’t trust any of that to happen.
I HOPE that Hawley succeeds in this. I doubt that he will.
Which makes me sad. And Hate Republicans again. Because this SHOULD be a no brainer. Turtle’s position should be obviously evil to anyone looking. But of course it’s not. For exactly the reason I registered Democrat. There’s not even really a way to pretend that the Republican Party has a decent bone left in its body.
Again, I would love to be wrong. Please, Senator Hawley, prove me wrong. I’m honestly happy just that this much has happened. It’s like finding one tiny little ember left in a dead bonfire pit. Just a bit of unexpected warmth in my bitter, cold heart.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to Throwback Thursday!
On this page, ‘Throwback Thursday’ is all about memories. So, what do you remember? If I was to say the word RELATIONSHIP, what immediately comes to mind?
In my final years at MTV, I used to walk to work. 6.1 miles from my front door to Hawley Crescent. I would always stop at Costa Coffee for a soya cappuccino. More often than not, I would meet this lovely girl there and we would catch up on events. She’s a teacher and psychotherapist and was very supportive and helpful to me when I morphed into a teacher. Down the years, she’s had a variety of unsuccessful relationships with men, who she described as “immature”. Not surprising, she’s an academic; she needs a little more from her men than shits and giggles. We’ve kept in touch and I met up with her last night. She finally has a boyfriend; someone that she really likes and feels safe with. “I like being in a relationship!” she said. She’s 42 now, Muslim and ready to settle down. Those of us in a relationship understand that. Companionship is very pleasant! Though many men are very resistant to the relationship and try to stay the lothario for as long as possible. Which is why I created the character of Wes in my novels ‘Whatever Makes Them Dance’ and ‘Keep It Fun’. Wes intuitively knows that he’s not a wham-bam single man. Wes knows that he functions better within a relationship, which is why my main female character Roz likes him so much. After 37 years, everyone looks at The Trouble and I as some kind of model relationship, which of course we’re NOT!. The only reason we’re together is because she puts up with my shit and because – for some bizarre reason – she loves me. “It’s not easy!” I said to my friend. “Remember to breathe!” I don’t think she believes me. After only eight months, she definitely doesn’t appreciate those words but what could I say to her? “It’s not easy!” is about the best advice I could give. Having said that, I do like my companion.
So, on this Throwback Thursday, what kind of memories, thoughts or emotions does the word RELATIONSHIP conjure up for you?
People expect me to be Mr. Happy or Mr. Naughty. They expect the cheeky chappie to come up with an endless stream of dad jokes and double entendres. At this moment, that kind of post seems irrelevant and almost insensitive. I am confronted by images of wounded, bleeding, traumatized and weeping children and babies. Callous cruelty beyond words. I don’t really have the heart or inclination to crack any kind of jokes. Right now, all the joy has been sucked out of life. As a trained actor, I will leap into action on Saturday afternoon and I will sound as normal: excited, upbeat, animated, amused. Yesterday, somebody asked me how I was so sure I was abreast of the truth. Thankfully, we have a HUGE array of TV stations, radio stations, newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs and books. Plus, we have ordinary people on the ground with social media feeds that give us live, on the spot reports. We now get ‘news’ stories from a wide range of sources. In order to find the truth, you take ALL of those sources and you filter them through your own knowledge, experience and cynicism, and you even add in a modicum of common sense. Not all people that look like me are good. Not all people with my background are good. Your common sense tells you not to generalise.
Have a throbbing and thrusting Thursday (with hopefully a few thrills through your thoroughfare?) I love you all.

If it’s here in our hearts that Hari dwells, how can he remain so utterly unconcerned at what we're having to endure? Once there was a time he kept fire from burning trees, but now, how our bodies blaze: why hasn't Nanda's Joy burst from our breasts and cooled us with one of his smiles? Without a second's slackening, unceasingly, our eyes rain a torrent worthy of Indra and our bodies shiver in a fearsome chill. Why doesn't his hand hold the mountain aloft again? Hands! It takes a mirror to see they've got bangles? We're dead from the vexation of it all. How can we live, says Surij, listening to all this yoga? We're women adrift in love's longing.
