I was minding my own business and analyzing another part of the A. Z. Fell & Co. bookshop from the Radio Times footage when I noticed something interesting on Aziraphale’s desk. It looks like the angel was studying a handwritten copy of someone’s last will and testament and left in a hurry, with a bronze medal and a fountain pen on top of it. And… an attachment of a land registry plan, barely visible underneath.
Obviously that’s when my South Downs obsessed brain turned all of its alarms on and decided to read the whole thing. And look for the missing parts, since only a portion of the original document was visible on screen. Unfortunately the full text is much longer and less exciting than anticipated, and — spoiler alert — related to a different area of the country, but still relevant to the Good Omens universe. We’ll look into that in a moment.

Let’s start with the struck bronze medal — acting here as a paperweight, which makes the documents in question already stand out from the usual bumph and bric-a-brac accumulated by Aziraphale over an unknown period of time on his desk.
It’s a very interesting rendition of the mythological scene centered around Daedalus fastening the wings onto his son Icarus (little does he know that this attempt to escape imprisonment will lead to his son’s demise). Contrary to popular sentiment in the history of art, this particular version of Icarus isn’t depicted as a child or teenager, but as a warrior donning a helmet and preparing himself to battle. Which makes perfect sense after discovering that it was made for the Royal Air Force Athletic & Cross Country Association’s WAAF Athletic Championships in 1945. There’s some poetic irony in the fact that the medal was apparently given to the third place winner in a high jump category.
Apart from its obviously military style, this concept seems inspired by a 1885-86 medal by Auguste Patey commemorating the experimental flights at the first French wind tunnel at Chalais-Meudon, a town on the banks of the Seine near Paris. On 9 August 1884, engineers Charles Renard and Arthur Constantin Krebs made the first controllable free flight there when they piloted their airship, La France, over a course and returned to their starting point. From 9 August 1884 to 23 September 1885, La France made seven flights and was able to return to its starting point five times.

And it is also my Will that an estate at Burslem, late in the occupation of Joseph Wedgwood, consisting of a newly erected dwelling house, a set of pot works, with other buildings, and a field called the Cross Hill, containing altogether about two acres; and likewise an estate in the Parish of Astbury, in the County of Chester, called Spengreen, and now in the holding of Thomas Johnson, containing about seventy-five acres or thereabouts; and also a piece of land on the east side of the Bridge in Congleton, in the said County of Chester, being about two rods; and also all the rest, residue, and remainder, messages, lands, tenements, hereditaments, and real estate, money, securities for money, debts due and owing, personal Estate and Effects of what nature or kind soever or wheresoever, not hereinbefore particularly devised or disposed of, together with such or so much of the several sums of money hereinbefore mentioned and bequeathed as shall, by means of the contingencies and directions hereinbefore expressed, shall all of them sink into and become parts of the said residue of my personal Estate. And I do hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint my said Wife, my said Son John Wedgwood, and the said James Caldwell, Esq., Executrix and Executors of this my Will. And lastly, I do hereby revoke all former or other Will or Wills by me at any time heretofore made, and do declare this only to be my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament, contained in six sheets of paper, and have to each of the first five sheets thereof set my hand, and to the sixth and last sheet thereof my hand and seal the day and year first before written. — Jos. Wedgwood (L.S.)
Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the said Josiah Wedgwood, as and for his last Will and Testament, in the presence of us, who in his presence, and in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses thereto; the several following words being first interlined: money—my—happen—said. — Alexr. Chisholm, Thomas Mitchell, Joseph Mitchell, Joseph Rutland
John Wedgwood, of Etruria, in the County of Stafford, Esquire, maketh oath, and saith that he has searched among the papers and writings of his late Father, Josiah Wedgwood, late of Etruria aforesaid, Esquire, deceased, in order to find certain Schedules or Paper Writings referred to in the last Will and Testament of the said Josiah Wedgwood, and therein mentioned to be annexed thereto, and respectively marked A and B. And this Deponent further saith that he has not been able to find such Schedules or Paper Writings, or either of them; and this Deponent further saith that he has never heard or been informed, nor does he believe that the said Josiah Wedgwood ever wrote or made out, or caused to be written or made out, such Schedules or Paper Writings, or either of them. — John Wedgwood
Sworn at Newcastle under Lyme, in the County of Stafford, the 29th day of June, 1795, Before me, John Lloyd, a Commissioner.
Proved at London, 2nd July, 1795, before the Judge, by the Oath of John Wedgwood, the Son, one of the Executors, to whom Administration was granted, having been first sworn by Commission duly to administer. Power reserved of making the like grant to Sarah Wedgwood, Widow, the Relict, and James Caldwell, the other Executors, when they shall apply for the same.

That was… certainly a lot of words. Let’s see if they mean anything! Turns out that this isn’t another John Gibson, rural postman and shoemaker from New Cumnock, Scotland, but a prominent historical figure with close familial connections to someone whose name you definitely know.
Josiah Wedgwood (12 July 1730 – 3 January 1795) was an English potter, entrepreneur and abolitionist. Founding the Wedgwood company in 1759, he developed improved pottery bodies by systematic experimentation, and was the leader in the industrialisation of the manufacture of European pottery. He is credited as a pioneer of modern marketing, specifically direct mail, money back guarantees, travelling salesmen, carrying pattern boxes for display, self-service, free delivery, buy one get one free, and illustrated catalogues.
As well as pretty, decorative vases and crockery with aesthetics and technology rooted in antiquity, Wedgwood put his designs to a more radical use. He was elected onto the Committee of the Abolition of the Slave Trade and designed an anti-slavery medallion which became the most famous image of a black person in all of 18th-century art. Covering the costs of distribution and production himself, Wedgwood ensured that it became a powerful symbol of public support.
Josiah was also a founder of the famous Darwin–Wedgwood family and the grandfather of Charles and Emma Darwin. It was the considerable inheritance Josiah left to his son, Josiah II, that enabled young Darwin’s survey voyage aboard HMS Beagle and, consequently, the development of his theory of evolution.
Okay, but what links the “Prince of Potters” to Aziraphale and his bookshop?

In 1774 Josiah Wedgwood and his longtime business partner, Thomas Bentley, opened a new warehouse, enamelling rooms and most handsome showrooms at 12-13 Greek Street, Soho. In 1795, after Josiah’s death, the Wedgwood studio moved to 8 St. James’s Square and the buildings were later occupied by coachmakers, writers and other artists.
Now, through Word of God we already know that Aziraphale spent the 1600s using his personal savings to gradually buy out portions of the neighboring land in order to build the original bookshop “on Greek Street just off Old Compton”, which finally opened in its current form in 1800.
This means that for the time Josiah’s company operated in Soho, they were at least neighbors.

Shadow Puppets AU - Rainy Day
This is actually in commemoration of a finished thread, but it's much smaller than the poster I made for the completion of the Deadwardian Era thread, so I didn't want to make a poster. This thread was actually supposed to be a short Halloween inspired RP that Bragi and I started back in October, it took us a couple of months to finish this 'short' thread.
In this thread, it's been a few years since Philip and Astrophel met, Father Josiah is dead, General William has taken Philip as his apprentice and the Wittebane brothers have their own house now. To celebrate Gravesfield's good harvest, Caleb took Philip to the pumpkin patch to buy a couple as a treat. They got a big one to eat, but Astrophel insisted on getting a smaller one to carve a jack 'o' Lantern, too, much to the brothers' confusion.
Caleb figured out that Astrophel meant something similar to a Will 'o' Whisp that the brothers had heard about from a fellow traveler before they arrived in Gravesfield, and recalled the story of Stingy Jack they'd heard from him to his brother and his friend as he carved the pumpkin, which Philip wanted to look like Astrophel. When the work was done, they went back into the house to roast the pumpkin seeds, and heard a small crash outside.
Local trouble maker, Hugh Fayerweather had smashed their Jack 'o' Lantern. Philip and Astrophel were greatly upset and Caleb didn't know how to comfort them, but left to go after Hugh to make him pay for their pumpkin and tell the new town preacher what he'd done. Meanwhile, the two friends didn't feel like that was quite punishment enough and made a pact to get back at Hugh one way or another.

White-tailed Ptarmigan vs Sickle-winged Nightjar

sources under the cut
White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura)
Lagopus is derived from Ancient Greek, meaning "hare foot". This is due to the heavily feathered legs and feet of ptarmigan.
eBird sightings: 5,809; IUCN Redlist Rating: Least Concern
Also known as the Snow Quail, this is the smallest bird in the grouse family. It serves as an indicator species for alpine tundra, and thankfully continues to fill a large range of western North America. The English name "ptarmigan" is Scottish Gaelic in origin, with 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker", referring to the bird's frog-like call. The p- was added due to a mistaken belief the word was Greek in origin, with the thinking being that the word related to 'pteron', "wing".
Sickle-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus anomalus)
Eleothreptus, from Ancient Greek, means "marsh bred"
eBird sightings: 267; IUCN Redlist Rating: Vulnerable
There is not a lot of information on this bird, as nightjar are already cryptic and the common distribution of this bird hasn't been fully studied. They're currently found in northeastern Argentina, southern Paraguay, and southern Brazil. The Sickle-winged Nightjar shares its genus with a single other nightjar, which is also sparsely distributed across South America.
Images: Ptarmigan (summer - Garrett Hughes, winter - Josiah Verbrugge); Nightjar (wing - Kristof Zyskowski, body - Martjan Lammertink)

Hypothetical titles for season 24 of 88.
Concord. Season premiere. Part one. Andy accompanies Abigail back to her hometown in Massachusetts to confront her husband and his grandmother. First appearance of Adam DiMarco as Jansen Mordaunt and Sharon Horgan as Annabelle Mordaunt.
Just do it. Season premiere. Part two. Findlay runs afoul of Annabelle when she and Sidney go to Concord to aid Andy which results in a case of sadistic hypnotism leading to them finding out who Annabelle really is
Sisters and brothers. While the team tries to figure out what to do about Anne Boleyn, Alabaster gets an unwelcome surprise when he finds out that Devon and Lucia have a son together. First guest appearance of Ed Oxenbould as Charlie Christensen.
Hootenanny. It’s David’s birthday. And in an effort to make it perfect for him. Clyde and Tina accidentally transport half the party to the actual old west.
Wive it wealthily in Padua. In this flashback episode told through shadow puppetry and marionettes. Abigail Mordaunt’s hellish life is revealed
The family plot. After a particularly pathetic prank. Findlay locks Skipper and Zoey in the families mausoleum where they get an earful from an unexpected source. Guest starring Keke Palmer as the ghost of the young Winifred Mulligan.
Disco inferno. Boleyn ups the ante by setting fire to a roller disco in Concord just when Abigail is about to serve Jansen with divorce papers.
Don’t panic. Andy and Jacob work on calming Abigail down before divorce proceedings begin. Elsewhere. Captain Birch liaises a sting operation on Mordaunt Manor.
Divorced beheaded died. Part one. Boleyn and Jansen play mind games with Concord PD during their interrogation forcing Findlay to step in and organise a transfer to New York State.
Divorced beheaded survived. Part two. Back in the precinct. Birch and the rest of the team get ready for the inmates arrival. But Boleyn has other plans. Final appearance of Sharon Horgan as Anne Boleyn, Adam DiMarco as Jansen Mordaunt and Lucy Hale as Abigail Mordaunt.
A goodbye to strong Australian arms. Findlay’s relief at Jonah breaking up with Jack Hughes is short lived when he tells her that he’s decided to date Butterball.
The area. Midseason finale. Part one. An email meant for Findlay leads her and Drummond to Area 51 a week before Christmas. Guest starring Jake Abel as Director Michael Leonowens and Peter Capaldi as Alien X,
The perimeter. Midseason premiere. Part two. With X’s deception exposed, Director Leonowens calls upon his parents and the rest of Findlay’s team for assistance. Guest starring Brenda Strong and Jon Cryer as Melissa and Josiah Leonowens and Jodie Whitaker as the reformed Alien X
The dinner. At Drummond and Barnaby’s insistence, Findlay holds a dinner party to welcome Butterball as Jonah’s new boyfriend.
Replacement captain. Captain Birch and Jacob go on a much needed vacation with Odessa, Lucia, Alabaster and Charlie, leaving the rest of the team to contend with a potentially unstable substitute captain who has issues with how the precinct is run. Guest starring Jayma Mays as substitute Captain Cornelia Linley.
Cue cards. The team tries to make best of it when Linley introduces a step by step guide to dealing with crime. Something they have been dealing with for over twenty years. So Findlay is sure of one thing and one thing only. Linley had got to go.
Kids today. Skipper and Oswald turn to Drummond and Odessa for help Theo develops an interest in girls. Which is something they are in no way prepared for.
Mothers ruin. Part one. In her capacity as head of the Fifth Avenue council, Findlay needs to choose the next heads of the Magistrate. And one woman is determined not to have her children chosen. Guest starring Calista Flockhart as Penelope Proctor and Matthew Daddario and Alexandra Daddario as her children Porter and Portia Proctor.
Head councillors choice. Part two. The final choice for the heads of the Magistrate comes down to either the Proctor siblings or Warren Christensen and his wife Ida. Guest starring Chris Wood and Melissa Benoist.
Manufactured amnesia. King Ruben and Queen Chantelle approach Findlay with a surprising proposal to stitch the royal fsmily back together. Guest starring Dev Patel as Ruben Burton , Naomi Scott as Chantelle Burton, Chris Pratt as Emerson Davenport, Auli’i Cravalho as Aimee Davenport and Rhianne Barreto as Rani Burton.
The taking of grand central 456. Findlay has her work cut out for her when she has to contend with trousers and a possible terrorist threat to grand central station.
Moving on up. Feeling that she isn’t cut out for the Fifth Avenue Council, Zoey nominates Ethan to replace her. Something which Findlay and Sidney wholeheartedly endorse and Jacob and Deucalion wholeheartedly oppose.
A tale of two genies. Season finale. Part one. A tungsten alloy sarcophagus is fished out from the Hudson River. And the contents means tough times ahead for Drummond and Odessa.
The time travellers boyfriend. Season finale. Part two. With 48 hours to go until Odessa’s disappearance, the team works desperately to find a solution to a problem that cannot be easily solved.

"I sadly heard about the tragedy that struck down on you...I know your father has his own opinion about my little commune but know that Miss Hughes, my sect's door is always open. I think it'd do good to you if you'd visit my masses, and spend some time with us. Trust me it will do you benefit." (from Prophet Josiah to Blair Hughes) from @kingdom-of-vanity
She’d rarely gone to the market since her mother and her younger brother had perished in that bandit attack. Her father had dove headfirst into the business, which was viewed by members of the prophet’s sect as the devil’s doorway. If it weren’t for the fact that two of his male members had helped her mother and younger brother, she would have told him to leave her alone. But they had, and her perspective of him was a bit more favorable than her father’s. “Just as you have your opinion of his work,” she said softly, stroking the petals of the single flower she’d gotten from one of the flower sellers and looking up at him for a few seconds. “How would spending time with someone he has conflict with benefit me? He has gone through enough.” Blair could tell that he meant well, but she was cautious of creating more problems and heartache in what remained of her family.

━ his father was loud laughter and notebook after notebook of solid writing and was also the smell of vodka and staying up too late for his own good. 'dad, dad, please go to bed,' and his father would laugh and say 'not yet.'
Character name: Shane Hughes
Age: Forty-one
Gender identification & pronouns: Cis-male & he/him
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Residential area: Masonboro
Hometown and length of time in Wilmington: San Francisco and moved to Wilmington 7 years ago
Occupation: Florist and Owner of Branches + Vine
Positive traits: protective, loyal, charming
Negative traits: single-minded, stubborn, relentless
Faceclaim: Jesse Williams
TLDR ; Shane Hughes is the ultimate protector. After losing his mother to his father's abuse, his grandmother to old age, and younger brother to a kidnapping overseas, one might wonder if Shane has experienced far too much trauma for one person. But with therapy and gardening, the florist is finally learning how to navigate the minefield of triggers that life seems to throw at him.
PINTEREST / CONNECTIONS
TW: verbal and physical abuse, parental abuse, parental death, grandparent death, mention of kidnapping, sibling death
From the outside looking in, Dominic and Tracy Hughes looked like the perfect couple with the perfect life. But behind closed doors, Dominic was an incredibly verbally and physically abusive husband. The abuse was so bad, that Tracy isolated herself from her family who had begun to ask questions. When the couple had kids, Tracy hoped that maybe it would calm Dominic down. Instead, the abuse just continued. At first, just verbally, but the pain from being verbally abused by your father wasn’t any less just because it wasn’t physical.
As the oldest child, Shane did his best to try to protect his little brother, Josiah, from it, but their father was a perfectionist who was impossible to please. Nothing the boys could do was ever good enough for Dominic. Anything they did well at, whether at school or in sports, Dominic hounded on them to practice and get better at, but no matter how much they succeeded, no matter how many awards they won, it was never good enough
One summer, when Shane was 14, he came home from summer camp and found his father and mother arguing near the top of their staircase. Shane watched as his father shoved his mother and pushed her down the stairs. Tracy broke her neck and died on impact. Dominic ordered Shane not to tell a soul or else he would leave with Shane’s younger brother. Shane felt like he had to protect Josiah and lied to the cops for his father. It is a decision that haunts him to this day.
Shane was so traumatized by his father and his childhood experience, that he swore he would never, ever be a father. Not if there was a chance he could end up like his own father. He feared for his future children’s lives and for his future spouse’s
Shane grew to become a very determined, very protective, young man. He refused to go out of state for college because he refused to leave Josiah at home alone with their father. So he went to Stanford, living at home throughout his studies, until his younger brother was old enough to go to college as well. During his MBA at Stanford, he met and quickly fell in love with Samira Iyer. He was a TA for several of her classes and the two quickly struck up a close friendship.
Several years after they had both graduated, they finally fell into a relationship and the years they spent together were truly some of the happiest years of Shane’s life up until that point. They even got engaged, preparing to spend the rest of their lives together, until suddenly two pink strips on a pregnancy test sent Shane’s life into a spiral.
The positive pregnancy test triggered a lot of unresolved trauma for Shane, and admittedly, he didn’t respond positively, instead immediately going into panic mode. He had assumed that because they never talked about kids, they were on the same page about not wanting them. Evidently, he was wrong. Samira wanted to keep the bably and Shane, in a desperate attempt at maintaining his own sanity, knew he couldn’t be a father. He begged Samira to give the baby up for adoption, but Samira knew she wanted more for their baby and herself, so with the decision to keep the baby, she ended their relationship
Shane went into a very intense downward spiral. He quit his job, which he been in line for a promotion for, broke his lease, and very quickly left San Francisco. Having put together - through bits and pieces his mother told him - that her family lived in a town called Wilmington, Shane packed up and moved there, only telling his brother, who had become a photojournalist and camera man for a international news agency, where he was going.
In Wilmington, Shane finally settled himself. He developed a relationship with his maternal grandmother, who loved gardening and taught him everything she knew about plants and flowers. He also finally began to go to therapy, to deal with all of the trauma he clearly still held onto from his childhood. When his grandmother passed away, a year after he moved to Wilmington, she left her family’s fortune to him, and it was just enough for him to open his own floral shop, where he could put the skills he had learned from her to good use.
Five years ago, Shane got the worst news of his life. Josiah, who he loved more than anyone else in the world, had been kidnapped while working on a story overseas, along with the rest of his crew, and Josiah had been killed. Shane was devastated. He traveled back to San Francisco for Josiah’s funeral and saw his father for the first time in years. The two nearly came to blows when Dominic dared to insinuate that it was somehow Shane’s fault Josiah had been killed. But truth be told, the protector in Shane can’t help but wonder if his father is right.
He returned to Wilmington, having taken several steps backwards on his healing journey and has been continuing to go to therapy to get to a better place ever since. His love for gardening has turned into a bit of therapy on it’s own and there’s nothing better for him when he feels triggered than to go spend some time in his garden.

Shadow Puppets AU- Children of Gravesfield
Obviously these aren't the only kids in the town they're just ones that have some minor connection to Philip. Where's Caleb, you ask? The only reference image I've drawn of him is his eighteen year old self, in this line up he'd be twelve and I didn't feel like drawing a whole new one just for this line up that's about the other kids, which in and of itself is a lore post about what Philip left behind when he went after his brother.
Also in this AU they're Protestant, not Puritan so they get to wear color.
tw: implied sexual assault, internalized homophobia, bullying, fatphobia, homicide, fratricide
Philip mostly interacted with the Fayerweather siblings, who represent the middle class of Gravesfield. After the death of their father, Hugh became the 'man of the house', despite their uncle moving in to help out and having to be the father figure for his younger siblings put a lot of stress on the young boy which manifested into violent behaviors later in life.
Their uncle had unrequited feeling for their mother which caused a lot of tension in the family as he tried to extort her by threatening to leave them to their own if she ignored his pursuits. The family also got a lot of charity from the church and Father Josiah previous to the arrival of the Wittebane brothers. Their mother may or may not have known what Josiah was doing and looked the other way for her family's sake.
Alice Fayerweather: A seven and a half year old girl who Philip kind of liked, and who kind of liked Philip, but they were too young to really call it anything more than that. Like Philip, Alice is what we call Autistic today, but unlike Philip she didn't have a savant talent. She just came off as shy and a bit simple, capable of remembering the most random useless information while forgetting basic things like to wear her bonnet, and during hours when the children are allowed to play she spoke through a puppet her older sister made from an old shirt. This behavior was attributed to her young age at the time but she started getting punished for it when she didn't grow out of it as she got older.
Agnes Fayerweather: Picture here at nine years old. Had a great dislike of Philip at first because before the Wittebane boys arrived she used to be Father Josiah's favorite, and while she is on one hand relieved to be out of that situation, she has lost the attention and benefits of his favor which has caused her family to suffer more. She has trouble trusting people outside of her family and was a little cruel to Philip in particular but not to the extend that Hugh was, and did stop picking on him when her little sister asked them to be nicer to him. She also warmed up to the Wittevane brothers after Father Josiah was hung.
Hugh Fayerweather: Being the twelve year old father figure to his younger siblings put Hugh in a similar situation to Caleb and the boys almost could have been friends if Hugh did not spend so much time picking on Philip. The first reason he did was because of the town's superstitious nature and general fear of strangers, everyone bullied the Wittebane brothers when they first arrived, Hugh just took the lead. He was very protective of his younger sisters as well, and noticed that Philip and Alice were connecting and tried to put a stop to it by beating Philip up every chance he got for fear of him taking Alice away one day. He also was also a secret/in denial homosexual who developed a crush on Caleb that he didn't recognize or know how to handle, what he did know was that he liked Caleb's attention and hurting Philip got Caleb's attention.
Thomas "Tommy" Aleworth: The Nine year old son of the town butcher, one of Gravefield's upperclass kids. He was another kid that was frequently bullied by Hugh due to his weight and difficulty breathing ( Asthma ) which made him reluctant to run and therefor "perfect" prey for Witches. Despite this, and being yet another victim of Father Josiah's, Tommy was a sweet boy with a kind heart. His blatant crush on Agnes may have also been a factor in Hugh targeting him, but Hugh never considered him a serious threat to his family. He and Philip weren't exactly friends but they sometimes played together and got along well enough that Philip's early hero fantasies usually involved him standing up for Tommy.
Post Wittebane Disappearance
As they grew older, Hugh's devotion to his sisters took an obsessive turn, making him more possessive that protective and frightening them both. Like many in Gravesfield he took to the practice of Witch Hunting with gusto, and unsuccessfully tried to use the disappearance of the Wittebanes to throw Witch accusations around at anyone he did not approve of.
After Caleb and Philip disappeared, Alice lost the one genuine connection she had in the town outside of her family and stopped speaking to anyone outside it all together. The family did actually grow to include Tommy after Father Josiah's crimes were exposed when he, Agnes, Philip and a few others came forward with what he had done to them and due to their shared experience, Agnes grew closer to Tommy and eventually married him.
Hugh never got over his dislike of Thomas, however, and refused to even attempt to accept him, only seeing him as a man who took his sister away. They fought frequently, and during one confrontation accidentally killed Thomas and accused his two sisters of Witchcraft to cover up his crime. His lie was uncovered a few years after they were executed and he was hung himself for the treachery.

The Strength of a High and Noble Hill (Outlander)
Chapter 41: Building Arsenal
Masterlist
"A show of force to prevent war."
– Claire Fraser
"Here." Brian says, making sure he looks directly at Keziah as he hands him some food.
Keziah smiles in thanks while his twin, Josiah, voices his.
Brian smiles back and with a murmur of "you're welcome" he joins the rest of the men, including Roger and Fergus on the other end of the campfire along with Myers, Sinclair and the Lindsay brothers. He glances over to the two brothers. He had liked Josiah when had met him at the Gathering, particularly when Lizzie's attention was diverted to him, away from Brian, but now, knowing the truth of his and his brother's backstory, Brian wishes to help them as much as he can.
Things had gotten sidetracked on the way to Brownsville when they came across the Beardsley twins. Da declared he would go to the Beardsley Post himself to buy back their thirty-year contract, to save them from their enslavement. Brian in the meantime had been sent with the boys and the rest of the company to Brownsville to fill the recruitment register with as many men as possible. A daunting task but one he knows needs to be completed considering the corner Da has been backed into.
"Captain Fraser, how long till Brownsville?" Hugh Findlay asks. The teenager sits with his brother, Iain, and their two uncles. Brian had felt he had done a good job so far, recruiting members of the Findlay family. It had to take some persuasion with money to encourage Joan Findlay to part from her sons though he would've preferred it if Roger hadn't stepped forward with a bold promise to bring them home safe.
The young boy is nervous with the thought of battle and Brian doesn't blame him as he feels the exact same way. He tries not to show it with a shrug and a, "It shouldn't be far. Sinclair?"
"Aye, he's right lad, weel reach 'em tomorrow." Ronnie Sinclair replies with a grin.
"At least yer ken kno’ weel yer geography, I ken kno’ weel yer lack o’ other abilities." Kenny Lindsay grins.
"Like wha'?"
Brian watches the small rise of smoke emanate from the pile next to the fire. "The ability not to burn your socks?"
"Ugh! No!" Sinclair frantically lunges forward to pick up his socks which he has laid near the fire to dry them. He tries to put them out by beating them on the ground. This causes the rest of them to laugh.
——
Brian honestly doesn't know what to do. Does he listen to Fergus or Roger?
Essentially, it was realised soon after arrival that the militia is not welcome, in particular Isaiah Morton due to Lionel Brown's daughter, Alicia, wanting to marry him rather than Elijah Ford causing the match to fall through.
The Browns declare that they want Isaiah as he dishonoured Alice and demand that Brian hands him over, to kill him. Roger argues that they should then ply them with Fraser whiskey to keep the peace and alleviate the murderous atmosphere. Fergus, however, argues that all that'll do is betray the trust of the men and dishonour their loyalty.
And Brian is in the middle of it all.
He understands Roger's wanting to keep the peace but Fergus, on the other hand, understands this world and battle more than him, about what it takes to maintain these men's loyalty and respect.
Eventually, Brian settles for pleading for time, to talk to Isaiah before he decides.
——
"Why haven't you married her?" Brian questions him. Isn't that what you do to save a woman from disgrace around here?
Isaiah Morton empty-handed, unable to answer.
"Come on, what stopped you?"
Morton hesitates again.
Brian sighs, gesturing towards the door of the cabin the Browns had ever so graciously allowed them to have this chat in. Brian wouldn't be shocked if they're building a pyre or something similar outside as they wait. The only reassurance is that the militia's numbers are nearly two dozen men, the Brown men are outnumbered. "Isaiah, that girl clear loves you, why haven't you married her? Do you not return her feelings?"
Isaiah frantically shakes his head. "No, no, I do. It is just– I would do it, Captain. But I can't... Unfortunately, I already ha' a wife."
Great, just great. It has just become a little more complicated than expected.
Brian sighs and scratches the back of his head. "What do you mean 'you have a wife'?"
"My marriage was arranged, betwixt her parents and mine." Isaiah argues, on the defensive. "Ally – Miss Brown – she started te love me when I used te cross Brownsville. And I began te love her... My heart spoke by itself. It was as if I dinna ha' a say."
"Yet, you made vows to your wife, which you broke. And you swore an oath to my Da. How can you be sure that you will stick by it at the end of the day?" Brian demands to know. He can't stand by him if his loyalty is so fickle.
"My wish fer yer Da and yerself was o’ my own will." Isaiah declares.
"Yes, your infidelity too!" Brian cries out in frustration more than anything else.
Roger, who's been lingering at the edge of the conversation, speaks up, "We could consider clemency fer this man. After all, love makes us all stupid."
Brian knows an unhappy marriage, he saw it for most of his life with Mama and Dad and knows that she suffered, only finding her happiness again when reunited with Da.
Isaiah's eyes widen with hope at Roger's words.
Brian knows his Da wouldn't do what he's about to do. He would simply get Isaiah Morton to leave if he can't marry her, and never see her again. And, while everyone says that Brian looks just like his father, he isn't his father.
Brian lets out a groan of annoyance. "Fine, fine. If you seriously love her and you'll stand by her—"
"I do."
"Then we'll help you."
"We will?" Roger questions. Brian nods.
"Thank ye, Captain." Isaiah says glancing, looking ready to sprint out of the cabin and wrap Alicia Brown in his arms.
But Brian blocks him. "But, we need to do it once they're all distracted, we can't do it now."
——
Brian knew his announcement that the militia has no intention of handing Isaiah Morton over would be met with anger but a stand-off against the townspeople verging on the potential for violence was what he should've expected.
Lionel Brown, a scrawny man with hair the colour of dried tobacco along with a straggling beard and a spare almost gangly build, leads them, furiously waving his musket in their direction. "Isaiah Morton must pay for his actions, you dare not deliver him to me?!"
"Morton is a militia, under my protection!" Brian retorts. He's worried and alarmed by the situation but to have Roger, Fergus and the militiamen standing by his side with quiet determination is a comfort. If it comes to a fight, it'll be an equal one.
"We are as protective as you, Captain. I also protect mine."
Tense silence between the two factions. Lionel is preparing his rifle. Brian's hand is closer to the gun in his case. Alicia Brown tearfully clings to her aunts and mother as she watches the scene play out.
Suddenly, a man in his fifties, arrives on horseback, irritated by the chaos that surrounds him. Brian thinks this must be another Brown relative due to his similarities with Lionel Brown, the same build and hair colour among other things. He is an imposing man with an impeccable posture, exuding arrogance and self-satisfaction. Brian notices that all the men of Brownsville immediately retreat out of respect. Including Lionel.
Meg Brown comes to greet him, grabbing the horse and the man sets foot on the ground. "Stop! What the hell is going on?" As he strides over, Brian notes that he's only slightly shorter than Lionel Brown.
"Those bastards refuse to give us Isaiah Morton when we have every right!" Lionel cries before turning to the new arrival. "Did you succeed with Elijah Ford?"
"I couldn't persuade him."
"Then we'll have that bastard if the militia lets me do it..." Lionel points to Brian, representing the militia.
Brian draws himself up straight now his the focus of everyone's attention once more. "I am Captain Brian Fraser. Any attack on Morton will be considered an assault on my father's, Colonel James Fraser, militia, formed by His Excellency, Governor Tryon. And I will have no choice but to consider you as traitors to the Crown – like the Regulators we were sent to disperse."
It's a smart attitude to the Browns. As Brian looks around, he sees that he has convinced several men from Brownsville.
Except, of course, Lionel Brown, whose face scrunches up and the vein in his forehead looks ready to burst. "Who do you accuse of treason?! You have the man who disgraced my daughter!"
The new arrival puts out a placating hand. "Stop, my brother. You look like an idiot. And a drunk idiot in addition. I want Morton as much as you, but I will talk to Captain Fraser – and reach an agreement." He looks around him. "Is it clear?"
The men of Brownsville lower their guns. This man, Lionel Brown's brother, managed to calm them down. Brian can't help but admire this quality.
——
Richard Brown, Lionel's brother introduces himself as, now informed of all the details says, "You have a strange company, Captain Fraser. Isaiah Morton, huh? He is not a good Christian."
"I can't do much about a man's character." Brian answers simply to avoid saying too much.
"There is enough sin and illegality every day, not to mention these Regulators who cause unrest in an already shaken society. And we don't want trouble with the Governor. So, if you came to recruit, you couldn't find better men in all the Carolinas. We will accompany you to Hillsborough." Richard declares. An upset Lionel is about to intervene but Richard silences him with a severe look. Richard approaches Brian, looking at him severely. "But they will all be under my orders."
"During the duration of our agreement you will answer in front of my father." Not having the men of Brownsville under his control would not suit Da but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have some control.
Richard's mouth contracts, irritated. "Of course."
Brian sighs, relieved. The tension between everyone is easing.
As he watches Roger take down the names of the new men and Ronnie Sinclair handing everyone his salary, Brian is glad things have calmed, ready for Da and Mama's arrival.
——
A/N: I wanted to show Brian growing more and more into his element. I want to show him beginning to find his place in this century, learning the ways of this world as well as implementing his own values. Like Roger, Brian wants to keep the peace but they're different people with different upbringings. Jamie is also wanting to teach his son all he knows and Brian will try to use that as well as his own morals.

Batman: The Animated Series
Eternal Youth
Several rich industrialists are invited to the Eternal Youth Health Spa, and that's where they are last seen before disappearing. The only connection: they had something to do with the death of plants. Bruce Wayne also receives an invitation (although it was one of his greedy directors who nearly made the deal to destroy a rainforest before Bruce forced him to shut the operation down), but Alfred and his "lady friend", Maggie, go in his place. When they do not return, Batman is forced to investigate, discovering that the spa is run by Poison Ivy, and that she has been using a formula to turn the industrialists into humanoid trees, including Alfred and Maggie
Perchance of a Dream
Bruce Wayne wakes up one morning to find that his life is completely upside-down: his parents are alive, the Batcave does not exist, Alfred does not remember Robin, and he is engaged to Selina Kyle. However, it doesn't mean that Batman isn't still around, and Bruce starts to wonder what has happened, especially after seeing the characteristics of a dream (such as book and newspaper prints not making sense) inside this new life.
The Cape and the Cowl Conspiracy
Baron Jozek, furious at Batman for humiliating him at a dinner party (over Jozek's underworld connections), hires Josiah Wormwood, a master in setting traps for his victims, to hunt down Batman and bring back the hero's cape and cowl.
The Laughing Fish
Joker creates a toxin that affects only fish, mutating them into Joker fish. Then, he targets innocent men who refuse to copyright his Joker fish. The Joker also captures Harvey Bullock, and Batman must rescue him and foil the Clown Prince of Crime's scheme.
