Haunted Houghton Mansion
Many secrets abide in the Houghton Mansion in North Adams, and just not the ghostly kind. Built by Albert Charles Houghton circa the 1890s, the extravagant home was a symbol of his wealth and prestige. He had made his fortune as president of Arnold Print Works, and he also was the first mayor of North Adams. Not bad for a local boy who made good.
In 1900, Houghton, his wife, Cordelia, and their youngest daughter, Mary, who was twenty-three at the time, settled in the house on Church Street. They lived there contentedly enough, and in 1914, Houghton bought his first car, a beautiful Pierce-Arrow that seated seven. He was very proud of his new possession, but it would bring tragedy to the family.
Houghton put driving the vehicle into the hands of the family servant and chauffeur, John Widders. On the morning of August 1, 1914, with Widders in the driving seat, Houghton and Mary set off for a road trip to Bennington, Vermont. Accompanying them were Dr. and Mrs. Hutton of New York, and their daughter, Sybil, who was a childhood friend of Mary's.
A half hour into the trip, the Pierce-Arrow made its way through the town of Pownal, Vermont, heading up Oak Hill Road-a rocky and bumpy strip of land that was in the process of being repaired. As Widders navigated the car around to the left of a team of repairmen, the car tilted, then tipped down a steep incline. It rolled over several times before coming to rest in a field. All the passengers except for Mary were thrown from the tumbling car. Mrs. Hutton was killed when the car rolled over her. Mary suffered a great deal of trauma and succumbed to her injuries a short while later at North Adams Hospital. The rest of the passengers, except Mrs. Hutton, survived with cuts, bruises, and a broken bone or two.
The incident was immediately ruled an accident by state authorities in Vermont. The report said the soft shoulder of the road was to blame for the car tipping, but it did little to settle the nerves of the chauffeur, John Widders. He blamed himself for the two deaths, and the morning after the accidebnt, he shot himself.
Houghton fell into a depression after the accident and the suicide of John Widders, and just nine days after the death of his daughter he had a stroke and passed away.
The mansion stayed in the family until 1926, when Houghton's daughter Florence and her husband, William Arther Gallup, sold the home to the Freemasons, who have owned it ever since. The Masons added a lodge to the house where the garden used to be. And by some accounts, Houghton and a few others may still be hanging around.
Josh Mantello has a unique perspective on the Houghton Mansion and its hauntings. He first heard about the ghosts of the building as a teenager, when his father, a member of the Masonic lodge, told him stories about the place. He said members claimed to hear footsteps going up and down the stairs, but found no living person nearby when they investigated. Lights would go on and off by themselves, and the lodge members would smell smoke, especially in the front parlor, even though smoking was not allowed.
In May 2000, Josh Mantello became a Mason and learned more about the ghosts and other secrets the building still holds. In one dusty, dark hallway upstairs there are a couple of odd Masonic artifacts. The first is a wooden electric chair, complete with exposed copper wires running down the length of it and a small box behind the chair about the size for a car battery. Next to the electric chair are two beds of nails. "I don't know what they were used for," Mantello said. "I asked some of the old-timers in the lodge about them, and they won't say." These Masonic relics remain mysteries covered in dust and a dark recess of the mansion.
Back to the ghosts . . . in 2004, Mantello co-founded the Berkshire Paranormal Group. He and his team have investigated the Houghton Mansion well over one hundred times now, and they've managed to uncover even more mysteries inside Houghton's old house.
So who is haunting the mansion? "A. C. Houghton, we're pretty sure his daughter Mary, and John Widders," Mantello said. "And then there's something in the basement. . . ."
"I'm not saying it's a little girl," Mantello said, "but it's some kind of small, shadowy creature." Mantello has been on investigations in the basement at night when the only light coming in was from the small cellar windows near the far ceiling. He and others have claimed to see this shadowy figure poke its head out from one of the basement rooms. "It's kind of shy," Mantello said. "I saw it poke its head out, then float out of the room in front of me before going back in and disappearing."

'What is that?' Scientists explain white patch that appears near northern lights
A whitish, gray patch that sometimes appears in the night sky alongside the northern lights has been explained for the first time by researchers at the University of Calgary.
The article, which was published on Dec. 30 in the journal Nature Communications, explores a "structured continuum emission" that's associated with aurora borealis.
"You'd see this dynamic green aurora, you'd see some of the red aurora in the background and, all of a sudden, you'd see this structured—almost like a patch—gray-toned or white toned-emission connected to the aurora," says Dr. Emma Spanswick, Ph.D., lead author on the paper and an associate professor with the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science.
"So, the first response of any scientist is, 'Well, what is that?'"
Spanswick says the white patch has been referenced in scientific papers before, but it has never been explained.
Her team's paper concludes it's "most certainly a heat source" and says it suggests that the aurora borealis are more complex than previously thought.
Spanswick says the discovery was made possible because an advancement in camera technology allows both amateur photographers and scientists to see true color images of the night sky.
"Everyone has noticed the advancement in digital photography. Your cellphone can now take pictures of the aurora," she says. "That has flowed to the commercial sensor market now.
"Those types of sensors can now be found in more commercial, more robust sensors that we would use in science."
The team's research came after there was a renewed interest in continuum emission with the discovery and observations of the long, glowing ribbon of purple light known as STEVE—or Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement.
"There are similarities between what we're seeing now and STEVE," explains Spanswick. "STEVE manifests itself as this mauve or gray-toned structure.
"To be honest, the elevation of the spectrum between the two is very similar but this, because of its association with dynamic aurora, it's almost embedded in the aurora. It's harder to pick out if you were to look at it, whereas STEVE is separate from the aurora—a big band crossing the sky."
The latest research is also significant because it includes three UCalgary students, including undergraduate Josh Houghton who was initially hired as an intern on the project.
"I was still learning things at the time," he says. "I had just started my internship, and I very quickly got involved. It's just very, very cool."
Spanswick says Houghton did a lot of the analysis on the research, which led to his participation in the Nature paper as an undergraduate student.
"He's had one heck of an internship experience," she says.
Houghton will continue the research as part of his undergrad honors thesis, before taking on his master's degree at UCalgary next year.

Captains Classic Results.
The annual Captains Classic competition was held this past weekend. Club Captain Ian Juckes teamed up with his vice-captain David Mendham for the Betterball format. Any team that beat their score would get a complimentary bottle of wine from the captains!
In the lead-up to the event Ian and David fancied their chances, and they lived up to that by shooting 41 points only 5 teams out of 28 beat them.
Ian had this to say...
'I applaud the 5 teams that beat myself and David, they must be talented to take out the CMGC inform player in me and the best ball striker at the club in David, congratulations to all and thank you for making the event so successful with a bumper entry'.
Taking the top spot with a huge 45 points were the ever-green Johnson brothers. Andy who is just 4 years away from the seniors section kept the ship steady whilst his younger brother Simon used his shots fantastically well they finished on Deer Park with 23 points to win by 2!
Can the following pairs collect their wine from the shop asap before Josh drinks it?
The Johnson brothers.
Rob and Adam Winnall.
Ben Houghton and Dylan Edwards.
Graham Perks and Nobby Gough.
Dave Bessant and Matt Richardson.
NP winner - David Mendham

Twins Steal One From Rays.
Rays 5 Twins 6 W-Sands (1-0) L-Cleavinger (0-1)
The Minnesota Twins returned home to host the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon at Hammond Stadium. The Rays were ready from the start as Yandy Diaz crushed a Pablo Lopez pitch out to left-center for a solo homer to lead-off the game. Two batters later, Randy Arozarena drilled a Pablo Lopez change-up out to left for a solo blast. This put Rays up by two before the Twins grabbed a bat. The Twins answered in the bottom of the first as Eddie Julien led-off with a walk and Byron Buxton lined a single to left. Royce Lewis plated a pair with a double to left to tie the game at two apiece. Later in the inning, Carlos Santana lined a run-scoring single to center. This put the Twins up 3-2 after an inning of play. The Rays bounced back as Randy Arozarena took Pablo Lopez deep in the fourth to tie the game at three. Two batters later, Richie Palacios knocked a Pablo Lopez offering out to right for a solo shot. Tampa Bay took a 4-3 lead after four innings of play. The bullpens settled things down in the middle to late innings. The Twins made some noise in the eighth when Jake Rucker and Maddux Houghton walked. With two outs, Misael Urbina hit a slow roller that stayed fair down the third base line. A run scored on the play and Keoni Cavaco lined a run-scoring single to left to put the Twins on top. The next batter, Brian O'Keefe plated a run with a base hit to right to double the Twins lead. The Rays tried to answer in the ninth with a Tanner Murray single and a Rob Brantly double. Carlos Colmenarez hit an RBI groundout to third and CJ Hinojosa ended the game with a groundout. The Twins stole the win from the Rays today in Fort Myers.
-Final Thoughts- Pablo Lopez got stretched out, but gave up four solo home runs. He went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Jay Jackson threw a scoreless sixth, Steven Okert fanned one in the seventh, and Josh Staumont struck out two and walked two. Cole Sands got the last four outs and gave up a run. Byron Buxton led the team with two hits on the day. The Twins hit 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Tomorrow, Jorge Alcala faces Yariel Rodriguez as the Twins make the long trip up to Dunedin to play the Blue Jays.

The Crossover
Tumblr media
Title 8: The Crossover
Genre: Children’s Novel in Verse
Target Age Group: 10-13 years
Summary:
Josh Bell, aka Filthy McNasty, is the son of a famous professional basketball player. This novel in verse is written from the seventh grade twin’s viewpoint on playing basketball, losing his brother to girls, losing his dreadlocks, worrying about his dad’s health, and living in his father’s shadow.
Justification: I had seen this book get chosen by many of the kids at our outreaches who like basketball and I was curious why it had won both the Newbery and Coretta Scott King awards.
Evaluation:
First, the visuals of the poetry help convey movement of the content. For example, the letters move diagonally across the page for the word “slipping” Alexander capitalizes all of the letters in the word “ELEVATING”, and the letters skip a line and go vertical for “down” in “down -right”.
Second, the approach to the novel as poetry is genius for the target audience. There are fewer words per page to intimidate a potential reluctant reader. The poems often feel like hip hop song lyrics. The content deals with basketball, a strong African American value of competition and camaraderie. The book introduces vocabulary like pulchritudinous effortlessly to make learning new words approachable and interesting. The beat and rhythm of the words in the poems often make the poems feel like a song or a basketball game with dribbles hitting the ground in time of the lines.
Third, the story itself is impactful. We slowly learn about the father’s failing health with little hints here and there of getting out of breath, needing to sit down, and needing to follow a special diet. We also see how important he is to keeping the family together by coaching his boys, helping them work out their differences and understand each other, and how much of a pillar in the community he is. Then Josh finds a letter to his father from the doctor explaining why his career is over and that he can fix it if he just has one surgery, but that fear of doctors from his father passing still clouds his vision. Even with the mother’s concerns reiterated for his health and Josh’s growing concerns, the father still ignores them and doesn’t go to the doctor. This is how we learn the double meaning of the book’s title - to cross over to the other side of life.

You have to eat only the soups for 14 days, which allows you to lose up to 15 pounds in two weeks! Changing a habit is hard because it’s hard to start. Most people think that improving their health will take a long time, which can be scary when there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Shorter programs can help start something that will last, but many of them don’t work for people over a certain age. The goal of the 14-Day Rapid Soup Diet is to give people over 50 a way to lose weight. The 14 Day Soup Diet simply helps you to detoxify your body and reprograms it to efficiently burn fat for energy instead of using the sugars or carbs. With this diet, you will discover a wide selection of recipes to follow to help you achieve weight loss and rid your body of stubborn fat.
The Rapid Loss Soup Diet book by Josh Houghton starts with simple steps on how to get started, then continues giving excellent advice about what products you should use when cooking your soups. For example, it encourages organic vegetables while having only 90 calories per serving (one cup). This helps your body burn fat faster without depriving yourself of food as other diets do. The program covers all the areas you should know about soups and eventually gives you the best recommendations. First of all, you will learn why soups are right for your health, what type of soups are fit for your health, why you have so many health issues and eventually how to go about it. Besides information about the soups, the author shares some insights on the process of losing weight and maintaining good health. This way, he has introduced a 21-day plan that you can follow along the way. This is known as Keto soup Detox. The best thing about this diet is how fast it works. I started the diet on a Friday and was already feeling much better on Sunday. Some of the weight loss is immediate, and the diet prepares your body for losing more weight and never gaining it back. Since many people are deficient in the three minerals that the diet focuses on – potassium, magnesium, and collagen – you will feel better very fast. As soon as your body is getting these crucial minerals, it will begin to heal, and you will feel happier, healthier, and more energetic.

One of the best ways to lose weight and improve your health is to lower your insulin. The simplest way to lower your insulin is by eating less sugar and eating less of the worst kinds of carbohydrates. However, you can also lower your insulin by eating foods that keep your insulin low. The soups you eat in this diet are loaded with ingredients that keep your insulin low. When your insulin stays low all the time, your body will start burning fat in your belly and thighs for energy. Just as high insulin makes your body store fat, low insulin makes your body burn it. With the Rapid Soup Diet, you will feel full for a long time with fewer calories than you ever thought possible. The rapid soup detox diet also detoxifies your lymphatic system, allowing your body to clean itself properly, and boosts your metabolism. Unlike previous fasting regimens, this one isn’t about deprivation, so users won’t be perpetually hungry or compelled to eat less than they need. The recipes offer vital nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, and collagen that the body requires to build the remainder of the body. The creators are so sure of how this application works that they request 48 hours to verify it. The user should weigh themself within 48 hours to witness the dramatic change. 14 Day Rapid Soup Diet has been a success over the years and is still making inroads. This weight-loss program guarantees rapid 14-day results with a money-back guarantee. Many of the reviews available online regarding the program also suggest that this program is authentic; it works, and is worth giving a try. If the diet doesn’t work well for you, there is a 60-day money-back guarantee.

The 2023 Club Championships certainly did not let us down. The scores after day one were very tight with Paul Judge and Clive Jordan leading the way on a nett score of 66. Rich Butcher, Mark Greenfield, Albert Kier, Andy Johnson, Ben Houghton and Mark Hyland were all in the chasing pack.
In the gross Josh Carpenter shot 74 to lead Rich Howell by 4.
Day one did show the positives of the WHS regular golfers posting scores meant it was wide open!
Day two kicked off a 7.30am slightly earlier with some rain forecast in the afternoon. The chasing pack slowly faded away leaving a back nine battle between Paul, Clive and Rich. Defending champion Clive faded away leaving a straight battle between Paul and Rich. Paul almost let nerves get the better of him missing the green on the 36th hole, however knowing an up and down would win him the championships, he composed himself and played the greatest chip of his long career to tap in for par and beat Rich by a single shot.
In the gross Josh Carpenter held off Rich Howell and a late charge from both Andy Thomas and also Rosanna Halls who shot the lowest gross on the second day.
A massive well done to all who played an of course to the winners. The conditions were really testing with the wind and rain.

All you need to do is a few steps prior to bed. It could be tough to alter your regular but once you begin seeing the results, it'll involve you like second nature. The steps are really very easy too, such as consuming alcohol 20 ounces of water after dinner, have 2 hrs between dinner as well as bed, do 10-minute stretches, 4-minute exercises (offered), etc.
And that's it. This portion of the program likewise includes a few other pointers and techniques you could implement into your routine if you wish to optimize your results.
