La Pecadora
Rest in power, Marialen Magaña "La Pecadora." Chicago's Latinx rock community is mourning your passing. You were a true inspiration, a chingona, a luchadora, and one of the coolest roqueras and radio broadcasters we've ever known. 'Yeah baby' we're definitely going to miss you.

Meed4: The Power of Identity - Finalists
Gallery 19 is ready to announce our three finalists for our competition: Meed4: The Power of Identity! This year's juror, Tersa Magaña, got back to us with her decision, and we are happy to introduce them to you all. The three finalists for Meed4: The Power of Identity are: Thad Higa, Melinda Ruth and Corinne Whittmore.
Thad Higa (b. 1989) originates from San Jose, California, and was raised in Hawaii. Studied Creative Writing in Seattle, Washington. Ate some donuts in Oregon. Hawked some homemade books in New York. Currently resides in Honolulu.
Melinda Ruth is an up and coming sketch artist focusing on portraits and realism. She was born in Scranton Pennsylvania and grew up in Dallas Texas with her two older and one younger sister. As a child, she was drawn to bright colors and vibrant imagery. She often aimed to wear as many colors as possible despite others finding her style hilarious. Art was always one of her favorite classes and drawing was always her preferred medium. The summer before 3rd grade, Melinda's parents separated which became a major turning point in her life. The depth of her parents' volatile relationship came to a head when her mother endured an altercation with her father that resulted in her mother being hospitalized. With a high school education and limited work experience, Melinda's mother made the challenging decision to remove herself and four daughters from the household. As a result of the separation, Melinda's family was immediately met with the financial skint of a single mother raising 4 daughters with little to no help.
Despite the ups and downs Melinda Ruth experienced growing up in poverty, she still saw art as a way to express herself. Eventually, after graduating from high school, she decided to minor in Studio Art at the University of Houston. It was through her studies she developed the techniques needed to create realistic portrayals of the human experience. As an African American female, Melinda has centered her art on challenging the negative messages society fosters of blacks, while encouraging her people. Melinda has faced a number of challenges in overcoming limitations due to her upbringing as well as the opportunities presented when others reach back into the community to promote prosperity. Therefore, as a practicing social worker, public health doctoral student and artist, Melinda Ruth seeks to use her art and any platform awarded to give hope and a voice to those whose voices have been silenced.
Corinne Whittemore is an artist, single mother, graphic designer and educator. She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, received her MFA in Visual Communications from the University of Arizona and has been teaching at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for the past five years in graphic design. Corinne has worked in the field of graphic design for over fifteen years as a Production Artist, Graphic Designer, Marketing Coordinator and Freelancer on both the East and West Coasts. She lived, most recently, in Virginia Beach, VA before moving back to the Valley in 2014. Having grown up in the Valley, Corinne has first-hand experience with its unique border culture and has focused her research and artwork around the hybridity of the borderlands. She has continued to exhibit her work locally, nationally and internationally.

Bourbon Coffee Variety: A Guide For Producers & Roasters
Arabica coffee is significant in specialty coffee production, with Bourbon being one of the varieties that takes centre stage. The World Coffee Research Organization (WCR) even refers to it as “one of the most culturally and genetically important… varieties in the world”.
Whether you’re considering producing it or roasting it, understanding where this variety comes from – and what it needs to thrive – will deepen your understanding and appreciation of it.
Here’s what producers and roasters need to know about the Bourbon coffee variety.

What Is The Bourbon Variety?
The WCR describes the Bourbon variety as a tall, medium-yielding plant with green leaf tips, which has the potential to produce a good quality coffee at high altitudes. It is a natural mutation of the Arabica plant, which has grown wild in Ethiopia for many centuries.
As a result of transportation and migration, Typica and Bourbon were first cultivated as crops in Yemen. In the 18th century, Typica was transported to Southeast Asia by the Dutch, while the French transported Bourbon to Île Bourbon, an island off Madagascar’s coast. In the 19th century, French missionaries began introducing Bourbon across Africa and the Americas.
Hanna Neuschwander is Director of Communications at World Coffee Research, which is an organisation dedicated to the growth, protection, and enhancement of quality coffee supplies, as well as the improvement of the livelihoods of producers. I spoke to her about the Bourbon variety’s role in specialty coffee, and its future.
While she acknowledges that Bourbon has played a major part in the history of coffee, it might not be part of its future. She explains to me that “as new varieties are developed that offer farmers fewer trade-offs between cup quality and agronomic traits of interest (yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, etc.), it will become rarer”.
This does not mean Bourbon will necessarily become obsolete, as she says it will continue to be grown by those who can focus on it as a specialty product, and who have access to specialty coffee markets. This will have certain implications for those who wish to produce it.

Considerations For Producers
Carlos Mendez Flores is a producer for Geca Coffee, a business that farms and exports specialty coffee in El Salvador. He says that Bourbon is a disease susceptible variety that requires dedication and care to maintain its health, and that its ideal growing conditions in El Salvador are shade growing, as it enables the cherries to mature properly and be picked at their optimum ripeness. This usually results in lower yields, but higher quality.
For producers looking to introduce this variety, shade growing is worth consideration, as it can prevent disease and enhance quality. It can keep temperatures low and stable, potentially reducing the need for fertiliser by fixing nitrogen in the soil, and allows the coffee to ripen slowly. While these natural conditions are conducive to its growth, Carlos adds that “the nutritional and health treatment” of Bourbon will be important to maintain its productivity.
After Bourbon is harvested, the fermentation methods used to process it should be chosen with care, as it can impact its attributes and cupping score. Fabian Torres is Manager at Café La Morelia, a Colombian coffee producing and processing company. He says that some of his best Bourbons “are naturally processed”, but cautions that the fermentation process used should consider “the needs of potential customers”, as each one will highlight different qualities and characteristics.

For example, honey and natural processed Bourbons will thrive in dry harvest climate conditions, as little to no rain means that its sugars won’t get washed away. Bourbon can also suit a double washed or double fermentation process. However, this will require more time and labour.
Other considerations for producers include coffee diseases and climate change, which can also encourage certain pests and diseases to develop. Carlos mentions that the 2012 coffee rust crisis affected Bourbon producers in Colombia, causing some to start farming other crops. Rising temperatures and irregular rain patterns can also lead to unpredictable harvests and premature cherry ripening, which will need to be monitored.
If producers are willing to face these challenges and take additional care with their Bourbon production, Carlos and Fabian both admit that it could be a profitable variety to produce.

Variations of The Bourbon Variety
A variety of regional profiles and colour mutations of Bourbon exist, the latter of which occurs across different Bourbons at maturation. East African countries like Rwanda and Burundi are known for cultivating this variety, as their high altitudes and volcanic, nitrogen-rich soils enhance the Bourbon’s sweet, full-bodied characteristics.
Latin American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Peru still cultivate Bourbon. El Salvador mostly produces Red, Yellow, and Orange Bourbon, which Fabian tells me is ideally shade-grown, allowing the cherries to ripen fully so they can be harvested at full maturity. He also tells me that Pink Bourbon originates in Colombia, and generally offers a good cup score, good productivity, and easy adaptability.
When it comes to colour differences, Hanna explains to me that the main difference between Yellow and Red Bourbon is that yellow has one recessive trait while red has one dominant trait. However, she acknowledges that there are more questions than answers when it comes to colour variations across Bourbons and other varieties.
Ensei Neto is a Coffee Consultant at The Coffee Traveler, a general coffee information site. He explains to me that for him, often the distinction between colours is most notable in the taste. He says that Yellow Bourbons have a substantial amount of fructose, creating a sweet and juicy cup, while Red and Pink Bourbons have a substantial amount of glucose, creating a silkier body and cup.

Roasting & Serving The Bourbon Variety
Ensei explains that as the Bourbon variety is dense, high in glucose, and with a complex chemical composition, it requires care during roasting. Roasters can manage this by controlling the charge temperature at the beginning of the roast, to develop the Bourbon’s sweet qualities and silky body – or the desired roast level. Roasting small batches at a higher charge temperature for a shorter period is ideal for developing denser beans.
When it comes to serving this variety to customers, Baristas will need to understand that different brew methods will extract different qualities from this variety. Fabian explains that brew methods also need to be specific to the needs of the customer. Two brew methods that can help bring out a Bourbon’s best qualities are the Chemex and French Press. The Chemex will create a clean cup that retains the Bourbon’s sweetness and complexity, while the French Press will enhance its silky and creamy body.

Bourbons have the potential to produce an incredible cup of coffee. However, it’s apparent that for producers to successfully grow it, extra time and care must be put into the process. This kind of attentiveness will also be required during the roasting process. While effort will be required for this, the result will be more than worth it.

Hispanics in America are under attack
By Stephanie Valencia, Joaquin Castro, Ana Maria Archila, Cristina Jiménez, Luis Miranda and Luis Miranda Jr. | Published August 06 at 4:41 PM ET |
Washington Post | Posted August 6, 2019 8:30 PM ET |
Stephanie Valencia is the co-founder of EquisLabs. Joaquin Castro, a Democrat, represents Texas in the U.S. House and is chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Ana Maria Archila is co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy. Cristina Jiménez is the executive director of United We Dream. Luis Miranda was an aide to President Barack Obama. Luis Miranda Jr. is board chair of the Latino Victory Fund and founding president of the Hispanic Federation. The above individuals circulated the letter and it is co-signed by 33 other Latino leaders listed at the bottom of the op-ed.
The deadly mass shooting in El Paso this past weekend was an attack on a U.S. city that many of us call home. It is also a city that has been one of the safest in the country for years, and it is now a city where there were almost as many murders Saturday morning as there were in all of last year. It is a city that is more than 80 percent Latino, including many immigrants. So let’s call Saturday’s heinous act of violence what it is: a carefully calculated and purposeful hate crime targeted at the Hispanic and immigrant community. It is an act of domestic terrorism.
Many will not want to hear or believe this: Hispanics in this country are under attack. Black and brown people in this country are under attack. Immigrants in this country are under attack. And President Trump is fanning the flames of hate, division and bigotry directed at us all — immigrants and U.S. citizens alike. Though the attack has been pervasive for many people in this country for years, it is becoming an epidemic that is quickly infecting more communities and posing a real threat to our country. The president is also providing cover for white nationalists, explicitly endorsing hate speech and tacitly endorsing violence.
We, along with dozens of Latino leaders, demand leadership from both political parties, call on them to stand with all people in our country and proudly acknowledge that the diversity of our country has been our greatest strength. Our leaders must have the courage to stand tall against this hate, not just in words, but also in actions that protect their fellow Americans.
We cannot excuse the vile behavior of Saturday’s shooter or gloss over the actions of others who have committed similar atrocities as just a sickness or mental health issue. This is hate and white nationalism, plain and simple, and it is fueled by irresponsible rhetoric. Unabashedly saying that Muslims should not be allowed in this country, warning people of invasions from Hispanics and immigrants (as cited in the suspect’s manifesto), encouraging chants of “send them back” and calling neo-Nazis and white supremacists “very fine people” are all examples of rhetoric that inspires hate and violence. We see the consequences in the stories of the victims and their families who mourn them, in the tears of those caring for the wounded.
A toxic combination of guns and hate is the problem. Keeping guns out of the hands of those who would perpetrate violence is an important part of the answer, and the Senate must immediately act to pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, update our laws and insist on regulations that meet the challenges of 21st-century America. Still, it is as important to address the root of the problem and stop the division, polarization and propagation of dehumanizing rhetoric that inspire these acts of hate. Washington, too, must act, and Congress must hold this administration accountable to ensure that groups promoting dangerous conspiracy theories and hate are designated as domestic terrorists. That includes the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, racist skinheads, and other white supremacist and separatist idealists.
Domestic violent extremism perpetuated by white nationalists affects Americans from all backgrounds. On Saturday, it was a Latino community; not long ago it was a Jewish congregation worshiping at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Muslims at a mosque in California. African Americans at Bible study in Charleston, S.C. Our gun violence epidemic is further fueling hate crimes. Since the Sandy Hook massacre of 20 elementary school children in Newtown, Conn., in 2012 there have been 2,193 mass shootings, resulting in 2,478 deaths and more than 9,000 injuries, including tragically in Dayton, Ohio, just hours after El Paso. We are all connected, and we must speak out.
The administration should also publicly announce that it is suspending deportation and enforcement actions in areas affected by this violence so that victims can seek medical care and the support they need to recover regardless of immigration status.
We are standing up for the soul of this country. And we have a lot of healing to do. But we are at a critical crossroads: Are we going to continue to tolerate the slayings of our fellow citizens and human beings based on their religion, national origin or skin color? Are we going to allow ourselves to be divided and separated? We think we are better than that. We know we are better than that.
