A Somewhat Gentle Man    [trailer]
Ulrik's released from prison after 12 years for murder. He gets a room and a job as mechanic. He hooks up with his old gang. Will he go straight?
Characters don't get a lot more stoic than Ulrik. And he apparently has quite the effect on women. The sex scenes are ... very memorable.
Moments of dark humour help preventing the drama from becoming too serious.
It's always a pleasure seeing an internationally successful actor, who also has a Hollywood career, perform in his home country, reminding viewers he has a much broader range.

A Somewhat Gentle Man
It takes a while for this upcoming movie to really get moving, not unlike its depressed antihero. For a while the audience is not going to care about Ulrick, played by Stellan Skarsgard, a middle-aged guy who happens to be a murderer who just got out of jail. Hes thick, steady, steady, quiet and sports a ponytail. In this new movie release Ulricks boss expects him to kill the guy who was responsible for his jail time. Ulrick says that there wont be any more violence in his life, or at least thats what he thinks.
This Norwegian offering to this years group of new movies is actually a very deadpan gangster comedy.
Its about a couple of old guys who are working in a young mans world.
All of Ulricks old friends seem to have succumbed to diabetes, stroke and colostomy.
Patsy Clines music adds to the sad feeling of this new movie.
Skarsgard walks around with a pained expression.
Hes surrounded by brutal women and silly men, all with stringy hair, dead skin and style that rivals that of people living in a homeless shelter.
Ulrik takes a job as an auto mechanic and loves steamed cod and sex with his landlady, played by Jorunn Kjellsby. There isnt much conversation between them. Instead they watch the Polish “Dancing with the Star” on TV.
Something about Ulriks attempt to get his life back slowly grows on you. Director Hans Petter Moland has Ulrik reaching out to his son, played by Jan Gunnar Roise, and a fragile colleague, played by Jannike Kruse, and he seems to warm up and come back to life as we watch. At the movies finale, Ulrik finally lights up with an enormous smile and the audience will realize that this is the moment theyve been hoping for.

A Somewhat Gentle Man ****
Tumblr media
Some of my best friends are Norwegian, as they say, but I wouldn’t want to be Norwegian myself. As Krundt has mentioned before, this is a people that, however handsome, robust, and candid, suffers a certain malaise. Norwegians may perhaps tend to be ever so slightly repressed, and like all Scandinavian peoples, they’re also a bit warped. Rarely, as we know, this leads to horrific violence. The rest of the time, it makes for wonderful people and wonderful stories, such as Hans Petter Moland's “A Somewhat Gentle Man,” which you should see right away. (It’s available on Netflix streaming video.)
You’ll get the idea the instant you see the peerless Stellan Skarsgård, playing a murderer released after 18 years in the slammer, on the dance floor or performing the funniest sex scenes in movie history with the canny Jorunn Kjellsby. She ingeniously portrays a widowed landlady who is deeply frustrated despite the simplicity of her needs, somehow evoking witches and trolls while reminding you of yourself.
The well-titled “A Somewhat Gentle Man” is a find, that rare, perfect little movie that you’d never heardof. Don’t expect too much: This is no more than a good story, nicely conceived, well told, efficiently visualized, artfully acted. Made in the U.S., a picture like this would be a gold mine of Oscars and the stuff of competitive dinner-party chat, but since it’s subtitled and in Norwegian, "Gentle Man" is just a fine film that too few people have seen.
Upon his release from jail, Skarsgård’s Ulrik, foolishly pony-tailed in middle age, faces a dilemma. His boss, Rune, a minor criminal potentate cleverly played by Bjørn Floberg, expects Ulrik to do the right thing: kill the guy who had snitched on him.
Problem is, Ulrick has changed over the years. He’s no longer a mindless thug, but a fellow with a live spark in him, a person acquiring a rudimentary awareness of what human life might be. Exploring himself while living in a basement and working in a garage, he discovers the impulse of compassion, balm for the itch on his trigger finger.
Rune, by contrast, having missed the rich contemplations of prison life, having lost both market share and prestige to fierce Baltic rivals over the years, anxiously insists on dramatic public demonstrations of ruthless criminal resolve. You get the feeling that if Ulrik doesn’t do the deed, it may be done to him.
Add in several women, a comic flunky, an estranged adult son, and a tightly-constrained setting. You get what you’ve always wanted: a perfectly enjoyable Norwegian movie.
After delighting in this one, you may want to see "O'Horten" next.
