Question: What do these things all have in common? Everybody knows that they’re mother fucking monsters! Or, you know, maybe not. These aren’t your Jasons or Leatherfaces or Ghostfaces; these are cult classics, weirdos, or the kind of villains that require a bit more horror knowledge than just the major franchises. In the spirit of the Halloween season, let’s decide which of these horrors will get the spotlight this time.
1. The titular leprechaun of his home series, and perhaps the silliest slasher around.
2. Wes Craven’s attempt to redo the body-jacking Freddy of Freddy’s Revenge, except this time as a serial killer with a fucked up foot who transcends his execution with magic.
3. A demonic spirit of vengeance with one of the coolest monster designs ever.
4. A deranged serial killer played by the Baron of Body Horror, David Cronenberg.
5. Run, run, run as fast as you can! This here’s Gary Busey’s killer gingerbread man!
6. A killer tire. No, seriously.
7. Probably the biggest jackass genie in all of fiction.
8. Before there was Slender Man, there was the Tall Man, a supernatural horror who can give you the chills just by standing there…. Menacingly!!!
9. The sexy biker vampire who leads the pack in Schumacher’s homoerotic masterpiece. I may or may not want to get railed by him.
10. The evil doppelgänger of the protagonist of Jordan Peele’s most divisive film. There’s some twists and turns with this one.

The Jordan Hill article is a great example of what I am currently learning, just as an update I did end up changing majors. I am currently majoring in early childhood education, and the majority of our course work is focused on gender identity and how the teachers emphasis on certain subjects creates bias. Last week we spoke about how more logical subjects make girls feel less competent. Only to be told this week that maybe if teachers focused more on educating and praising girls when they complete a math problem we can help reduce gender and sex bias in the classroom. On today’s topic we will be learning about the gingerbread man/woman to display the complexities of sex and gender identification. I am don’t know if you have heard of the so called gingerbread person, but I just had to say something after reading the hill article.
Yikes.
Yes, I’ve posted about that before. It should go without saying that it’s completely unscientific and requires one to believe that humans did not evolve alongside other species that are sexually dimorphic and exhibit gendered behaviors.
Social constructivism is inherently a form of “intelligent design.” Where Xians believe that an all-powerful god created life, social constructivists believe that an all-powerful oppressor class invented the "lie” of sex and gender and socially engineered everyone into accepting this as “truth” and perpetuate it in the preservation of that power.
Except the most rudimentary study of pretty much any other species, and certainly any mammal, will demonstrate this is obviously false. Which, of course, is why science must be “decolonized” to let non-science be treated like actual science.
And worse, it’s all based on stereotypes. What I have is a slightly different version, but let’s zoom in on some of the detail:
That is, build your identity around tired stereotypes of what “woman-ness” and “man-ness” means, what “feminine” and “masculine” mean.
You can’t be a femme boy, or a tomboy girl. You have to identify along lines of not being a boy or a girl at all.
And of course, the messaging itself will influence children who are still learning to navigate the world and figure out how it works. That, of course, is the point of indoctrination. Pretending that well-understood concepts and language are actually complex allows shallow, juvenile takes to masquerade as intellectual profundities.
==
By all means, let’s work on the gender bias in the classroom.
https://dash.harvard.edu/bitstream/handle/1/4740480/Pathways_to_Prosperity_Feb2011-1.pdf
In recent years, a yawning gender gap has opened up in American higher education. Men now account for just 43 percent of enrollment in our nation's colleges and earn only 43% of bachelor's degrees. Not surprisingly, women also account for 60 percent of the nations graduate students.
-- Taken from the report-Gender Equity in Higher Education: 2010-issued by the American Council on Education. The report also found that among undergraduate students over 25, women outnumber men by a two-to-one margin. The largest gender gap was found among African Americans, where 63 percent of all undergraduates were women.

https://archive.ph/Fj6wY
But I don’t think they don’t want to do that, when they’re busy creating the bias. It’s not even a new bias; Christina Hoff Sommers was talking about this 20 years ago.

https://www.amazon.com/WAR-AGAINST-BOYS-Misguided-Feminism/dp/0684849577
This, along with being 75% of all homeless, 75% of all suicides, 92% of all workplace deaths, two thirds of all victims of violent crime, 75% of all murder victims and dying 5 years earlier, falls under the broad spectrum suite of “systemic” benefits they experience called “male privilege.”
Certainly, in many countries, girls getting access to a quality education is a very big challenge. However, when we’re talking about luxury beliefs such as the “Genderbread Person,” we’re not talking about Afghanistan or Somalia or Chad. And the activists sure aren’t talking about them.

You may find Dr. Lyell Asher’s examination of education schools to be enlightening.
https://quillette.com/author/lyell-asher/
He points out that the corruption in ed schools is far older than the current Woke plague that is beleaguering us and threatening the future of all kids, their employability and the competitiveness of the countries where it takes hold.
https://www.amazon.com/Schools-We-Need-Dont-Have/dp/0385495242
‘The widest street in the world’ is one witty description of the street that separates the campus of Teachers College from the rest of Columbia University. The current sentiment at research universities that professors of education are ‘lesser breeds without the law’ is one that has been expressed since the beginning of the century. In 1916, Abraham Flexner wrote that education schools had ‘lost their heads’ when they called for the removal of important knowledge as well as trivia from the school curriculum. He complained of their unwarranted devotion to technique, as well as the ‘absurdities and trivialities’ of their course offerings and dissertation topics. In 1929, Irving Babbit of Harvard observed that professors of pedagogy ‘are held in almost universal suspicion in academic circles, and are not infrequently looked upon by their colleagues as downright charlatans.’ Not long thereafter, in 1933, the retiring president of Harvard, Lawrence Lowell, told the Board of Overseers that Harvard’s school of education was a ‘kitten that ought to be drowned.’ During the downsizing of more recent decades, education schools continue to be among the first place universities look for belt-tightening, and in some places, notably Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Duke, such schools have disappeared'
Even those running the schools recognized the problem.
“Study, reflection, debate, careful reading, even, yes, serious thinking, is often conspicuous by its absence. [..] Un-intellectualism—not anti-intellectualism, as this assumes malice—is all too prevalent.”
-- Theodore Sizer (Dean, Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Walter Powell (Associate Dean, Harvard Graduate School of Education), “Changing Conceptions of the Professor of Education” (1969)
-
“... elite education schools are doing an adequate job of conveying fundamental, broad-based knowledge and skills to prospective teachers. The foundations and methods courses we reviewed suggest that faculty at most of these schools are often trying to teach a particular ideology-that traditional knowledge is repressive by its very nature-without directing their students to any substantial readings that question the educational implications of this view.”
-- David Steiner, Susan Rozen, “A Qualified Teacher in Every Classroom” (2004)
By 2004, we can see the threads of what we now know as “other ways of knowing,” social constructivism and the abandonment of educational content in preference to activism.

I don’t mean to try to put you off from your ambition. More to affirm what you’ve already noticed: that the challenge here is larger than advertised. It’s not merely making it through tertiary education, meeting all the demands and the work that such education entails. But also navigating an authoritarian ideology that has become extremely confident in itself - supremely so, one might even say - and brooks no dissent.
I tip my imaginary hat to you for the challenge that you’re taking on.
As with any young non-believer growing up around fundamentalist religionist parents, you will likely find you have to lie in order to get by. But if you can discreetly find others whose ethics are more liberal and less postmodern Marxian, you may find you’re not as alone here as it might seem.
And hopefully there’ll be more teachers like Jordan Hill and fewer like this.
That is, “gaslight infants and toddlers for their own good.”

The Treehouse
Pairing: Fred Weasley x reader (gender neutral, i think)
Warnings: explicit language (three curse words), TOOTH ROTTING FLUFF cuz why not
Word count: 2.5k
Summary: you visit the Weasleys during winter holidays and find Fred working on something secret in the forest
A/n: AKSJNDNB NAVES (@phuvioqhile) HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABE <3 this is so long but very fluffy so I hope u enjoy !
Winter. The best time of the year, when snow falls from the sky, burying the world in pure bliss. And with it comes all the activities that make everyone’s lives brighter; snowball wars, snowmen, gingerbread houses, and sleighing. Things that you’d never grow tired of, even as a seventeen-year-old.
Not to mention the time you spent with your friends, the Weasleys, who never failed to make the snowy times even more magical. You’d befriended the redheads already in first grade, during your first trip to Hogwarts. You’d been wandering around the train in search of an empty compartment, but since you found none, you decided to get seated in the one closest to you.
Lucky for you, the people in the compartment were Fred and George Weasley, second years, accompanied by their friend, Lee Jordan. The four of you quickly found a mutual passion for pranks and jokes, together with shared interests, like quidditch and food. Throughout the years, you became best friends, though you felt a stronger connection to Fred than the other boys.
Because of the strong bond between you and the whole Weasley family, there was rarely a year you wouldn’t visit their house for Christmas break. This year was no different, except your longing to see the Twins’ faces was stronger, after a whole semester without seeing them. They’d already finished school last year, leaving you to fend for yourself. This ended in a very boring semester for you, so when Fred sent you an invitation like every year, you were more excited than ever.
This is why you presently were in a car that was parking outside of the burrow. You could have taken Floo powder instead, but you always enjoyed looking at the view while you were driving. It was part of the magic, in one way.
When you arrived, the snow was falling down from the sky with as much force as it did when you left your own residence. There was already about three inches of the white mass on the ground, making it hard for you to waddle your way to the Burrow’s front door. You knocked three times and waited with a big smile on your face for Molly to open up.
“Oh, y/n!” She exclaimed in glee. “How wonderful, you’re already here! Come in, sweetheart.”
You gladly obeyed, stepping into the cozy and warm house. You were quickly met by hugs from Ginny and Molly, as well as an awkward handshake from Ron.
Then, no other than George Weasley came sprinting down the stairs to hug you, but stumbled over his own feet at the very end of the staircase. Breaking out into laughter, you gave him your hand and pulled him up from the ground. He only snorted with laughter, pulling you in for a hug, which lasted for at least three minutes.
“Hi, Georgie” you giggled. “Where’s Fred?”
“Oh, he’s outside,” Molly replied before he could. “In the forest behind the house. Probably didn’t expect you to come this early. Come here, give me your bag and go find him.”
You sent George an apologetic smile as you saw the half-serious disappointment on his face. He pouted a little, but you caught a glimpse of a smile behind there; he wasn’t all that annoyed at you. It might have been because he knew about your little crush on his twin, and no matter how much he loved spending time with you, he was dying to make the two of you something more than friends.
“Thank you, Mrs. Weasley” you shouted, wriggling out of George’s grasp and running off before Molly could jokingly scold you for calling her ‘Mrs. Weasley’ and not ‘mum’.
The cold air hit your face with much force, stinging your skin harshly. You didn’t pay much attention to it, though, because you were solely focused on finding Fred and giving him a giant bear hug. Only the thought of him made your heartbeat speed up, and you were quite sure your face would have heated up if you weren’t outside in the freezing cold.
The forest behind the burrow was small but consisted of tons of trees that were swaying with the wind, losing many of their leaves in the process. On some of them, there were lumps of snow, weighing down the branches. Every now and then, the branches would give in and bend, so that the snow could fall down and join its relatives on the ground.
The scenery was incredibly beautiful, only strengthening your love for the cold season, almost causing you to forget what, or who, you were looking for in the first place.
“Fred?” You shouted. “Freddie, where are you?”
No answer came, so you set off into depths of the woods. It wasn’t a scary forest, like the ones in horror movies, more like a peaceful and calming one. You wandered around for about five minutes before you spotted him. Well, his hair. It made a big contrast to the white forest, making it easier for you to find him.
Surprisingly, he wasn’t sitting by a tree. He was up in one, standing one of the branches. The snow made it hard for you to see, but it appeared that he had something in his hand and he was trying to place it somewhere.
“Fred?” You inquired, gaining his attention. As his eyes met yours, he gave you a cheeky smile, causing your knees to grow weak.
“‘M coming!”
He quickly made his way down, crawling down a ladder you hadn’t seen before. It was attached to the stump of the tree, and while you tried your best to see where it led to, there was too much snow on the branches. Still, the ladder had sparked your interest, which Fred must’ve noticed as he chuckled a little, standing in front of you.
His cheeks were rosy from the cold and his hair was a complete mess, and even though you’d never admit it, it complimented his face nicely. He was wearing many layers of clothing, which were probably knitted by Molly to prevent her rogue son from catching a cold.
Fred’s wide smile was enough to make you forget the ladder, and whatever it was he was doing on that tree, and all that mattered was that you finally got to see him.
“Fred!” You put your arms around his neck, pulling him into an embrace. “I’ve missed you so much”
He chuckled into your hair, wrapping his arms around you as well. “I’ve missed you too, sunshine.”
Your breath hitched slightly at the nickname. He’d been calling you that for years now, yet it still made your legs jelly. It was something so intimate about it, making you wonder if perhaps he also wanted the two of you to be more than just friends. The chances weren’t big, but hey, one can dream, right?
You pulled away from him slowly, letting your gaze fall on his eyes. Oh, how you loved his eyes! They were brown and radiated warmth, like wood burning its way through your soul. They were your favorite thing of his, they had this glint of adoration in them each time he looked at you.
“So,” you cleared your throat, pointing up at the tree. “What’re you doing up there?”
“Oh, that” a smirk made its way to his face. “I’ll show you if you promise not to tell anyone.”
“Anyone except George and Lee,” you corrected him with a smile, knowing they probably already knew. To your surprise, he shook his head.
“No, not even them”
You were shocked, to say the least. He never kept anything from his brother or Lee. They were his best friends.
You were about to say something, but he grabbed your hand, pulling you towards the tree. His hands found their way to your waist, as he helped you crawl up the ladder. You mumbled a “thank you”, feeling your face heat up from the touch.
Merely a few seconds later, you pulled yourself up to stand one of the thicker branches. The sight that was revealed to you was enough to knock the air out of your lungs. You were standing in front of a door to a small cabin, built around the tree. A treehouse.
You smiled at the scenery, getting your breath back. The cabin was beautiful, made out of regular wood, but painted dark brown, with a real doorway and some windows. It certainly took a long time to build that thing, especially in the cold.
“Do you like it?” Fred’s voice was low in your ear as he spoke. You turned to face him, grinning even wider in response to his excited tone.
“It’s beautiful,” you admitted truthfully. “Am I the first person you’ve shown this?”
“First and last. It’s yours”
The smile faded from your face, leaving nothing but an expression of pure shock. Were you hearing right? Did he build this... for you? The cold air suddenly wasn’t that cold anymore, and your heart sped up. His words played on repeat in your mind. It’s yours.
The grin returned to your face, now bigger than ever, and you let out a short laugh of ecstasy. Before you could think twice, you wrapped your arms around Fred, letting him spin you around. Your laughs filled the air, and you swore you could hear Fred breathe out, relieved.
“Oh my god, Fred!” You beamed. “I love you so much”
Your words made him stop spinning. He let go of you, taking a step back and looking at you, confused. No, not confused, rather surprised.
You realized what you’d just said, mentally face-palming yourself. You seriously just told your best friend you loved him. Real smooth, y/n. Suddenly you really wished you weren’t there. That you could just disappear into thin air, and never see Fred again. Though you probably wouldn’t have been able to handle that. You loved him too much.
Yes, yes, you did. You couldn’t even deny it anymore. You were in love with your best friend. How tragic. How really fucking tragic. And now you’d totally fucked up your friendship.
Oh, how you wanted to leave, and oh, how you wanted to stay. You didn’t want him to reject you, but you didn’t want him to stay quiet. You wanted him to say something, anything, yet at the same time, you hoped he’d just forget it and move on.
“I love you, too”
Oh, shit. That was not what you expected to hear. Your heart stopped for a moment, all blood left your face. You were astonished, your bones had turned to stone. You couldn’t move, you couldn’t talk. The only thing you could do was stare at him and his beautiful, brown eyes.
“You do?” Was all you could force out.
“Yeah,” he smiled, showing his teeth. And there it was again. That glint in his eyes made you forget everything outside of your little bubble. Yours and Fred’s bubble. A bubble you didn’t want to break.
Then, leaving your common sense behind you, you kissed him. You threw your arms around his neck, pulling him down to face you and you pressed your cold lips against his, rather warm ones. You were afraid he’d pull away, flinch when you touched him, but he didn’t.
Instead, he pulled you even closer, leaving no space between you, as your lips moved in synch. His hands were on your cheeks, gently caressing them. The kiss was soft and full of unspoken words, like a gentle breeze that suddenly makes you remember things you’d forgotten. You smiled into the kiss, happier than ever. Fred let out a laugh, muffled by your lips.
After some time, your wide smiles and giggles made it impossible to continue the kiss, so you pulled away, your lips swollen, your heart ecstatic.
“Wow,” Fred breathed out. “I should make you tree houses more often”
“You should. Can I see it from the inside?”
“It’s yours, you can do whatever you want with it”, he said, motioning towards the door. “Ladies first”
You grabbed his hand, holding it tightly as you opened the door and stepped into the house. It was a little scary, and you prayed the house wouldn’t collapse. At least Fred was holding your hand, though that didn’t exactly calm your nerves either.
The inside of the treehouse was no worse than the outside. If anything, it was even cozier, not to mention warm! How Fred had done that, you had no idea, but as you were looking around the room Fred had built specifically for you, it didn’t really matter.
He’d really thought about everything. There was a small table in the middle of the room, accompanied by a small kitchen; with a microwave and some cooler bags. On the right, there was a sofa with dozens of pillows and blankets. Behind it were some shelves, filled with all kinds of stuff. In the corner, there even were two sleeping bags.
Tearing you away from your awe, Fred cleared his throat. “So, since we’ve already kissed and confessed our feelings...”
His tone made you feel nervous. What was he going to say? That he only loved you as a friend? That the kiss was a mistake? Merlin’s beard, what if it was a prank? He loved pulling pranks, even on George, so why wouldn’t he pull one on you?
No, he wasn’t that cruel. He wouldn’t do that to you, not after you opened your heart to him completely. Yet his facial expression was neutral and to no help.
“Yeah?” You asked shakily, urging him to finish, yet at the same time, you didn’t want to hear it.
“Y/n L/n,” he said, his expression confident and a vibrant smile on his face. “Would you do me the honor of becoming my girlfriend?”
And that’s when you decided to get some payback. He’d made you so nervous, so scared of rejection, when he wanted to ask you this? Obviously, you were happy. No, not happy, ecstatic. But he didn’t need to know that.
You scrunched your nose, almost in disgust, and furrowed your brows. His face immediately fell and his smile was replaced by a hurt expression. You knew you were being cruel but he kind of deserved it. After three and a half seconds of silence that none of you could handle, you finally gave in.
“Yes, of course, I want to be your girlfriend, dumbass”
The relief on his face was almost too comical to watch, but when he voted closer to you and pressed his lips against yours, your laughter died down, muted by the kiss. You could feel all his emotions through that connection, and not only that; you felt them as your own.
The relief, the euphoria, the love. All of it. It was there, in the air surrounding you, between you and inside of you. And you hoped it would never fade.

Written for the 12 days of bellarkemas prompts: Day 3-gingerbread;
canon divergence, established relationship AU
@klarkegriffin, @queen-of-the-wallflowers15
It was rather needless to say that out of the two of them, it was Bellamy who made all the home cooked meals, no matter how hard Clarke tried to help out and follow him around the kitchen, watching as he metitiously, carefully, cut the vegitables or poured oil in the already rather warmed up pan or added spices to the bubbling meals.
She was a child in the kitchen-a rather sweet, adorable, messy child who always went around stating “I want to help, Bell!” but ended up with two cuts and flour all over herself whenever she did try to do so.
Bellamy pretended to be all grumpy about it, but in all honesty, he was rather enjoying her enthusiasm and while he had banned her from the little cabin kitchen he had build them a few years ago throughout the year, he let her help when holidays such as the Spring festival or Christmas (which their camp still celebrated) came around and Clarke was...
well one would say rather extatic and that would probably also be a misinterpretation.
Her favorite thing was watching Bellamy make bread-he was a true poet at that and it was during one of those precious kitchen moments with his sleeves rolled up and kneading his precious dough that she had grabbed him by the elbow, turned him around, jumped in his arms and kissed him so hard he lost his goddamn mind and saw stars in the middle of the day. It was also that same evening that they conceived the little life she was now carrying in her very big, very annoying seventh month old bump.
It was also that bump that was the whole reason he agreed to having her help him with the Christmas ginger bread that they were to make for Monty and Harper’s special dinner party tonight-a celebration of both the holiday and their little boy Jordan’s first birthday.
Bellamy was already regretting his choices when Clarke dug her finger in the batter before he had even began mixing it and licked it with a loud and very satisfied moan.
He swatted her hand and furrowed his eyebrows.
“Princess, you promised!” he reminds her.
“Oops...” she says in pretend innocence as she licks her finger “Sorry, Bell.” he rolls his eyes and sighs but nods at the bag on the counter.
“Come on, pass me the flour.” she does and of course she’s so clumsy, she spills half of it on the table in that simple process and he can’t help but smile thinking about her shooting guns, leading negotiations or waving swords around all day but being an absolute disaster in the kitchen.
It’s when he starts kneading the dough that she elbows him in the ribs and gives him her biggest puppy eyes ever, going like.
“Bell....can I try too?” he sighs again, a little tiredly but also liking that she asked, picks her by the wrist and brings her between his two big arms. He rolls up her sleeves and puts her hands in the dough.
“You have to be gentle with it, like loving a little kid-” his hand falls for a brief moment to her bump and caresses it softly, then leans in and kisses her cheek, then her neck and makes her giggle.
“Bell, stop it! I’m trying to concentrate.”
“Sorry, love, I just can’t keep my eyes off of you.” he whispers and keeps caressing her bump “You carrying our kid drives me crazy.”
“Not as much as you making ginger bread does me.” she moves up to meet his lips and they kiss like this for a while, abandoning the precious dough for a few moments before they separate desperate for air and focus back on it.”I always mess this up.” she pouts as she tries to mimick his movements.
“No, you don’t.” he promises and covers his hands with hers heping her follow him “Just like this, easy, slowly...add some flour then dig into it again-” he whispers “It has to become one solid piece but also be soft to the touch.” his hand drops to her bump again “Like this.”
“Stop calling our kid bread, Bellamy.” Clarke pouts again and he laughs a little “It’s offensive.”
“Oh, I’m sure Cassie’s the most offended kid in the planet right now.”
“We still don’t know if it’s a girl.” Clarke reminds him as she focuses on the bread and he watches her get the hang of it by resting his chin on her shoulder “So that’s rather offensive too.”
“I told you, if I’m wrong and it’s a boy, you can pick the name.”
“Yeah, at least it’d be a normal one, not something like Perseius, Ares or Zeus.” he chuckles at that and they feel the baby kick in that exact moment, making Clarke ouch a little and stop her movements.
“See, our girl agrees with me.” Bellamy points out as he rubs her tummy in a soothing manner to make the minor pain go away.
“Or our boy agrees with me!” Clarke fight stubbornly making him laugh once again. He kisses the brow between her eyebrows and because he can’t help himself, turns her face to him and brings her to his lips once more.
He puts flour on her cheek and she on his but he doesn’t care because the only thing he wants to do is lift her up, put her on the counter and kiss her until he can’t feel her lips anymore which is exactly what he does while satisfying her with his fingers and rubbing the big bump in his pants in her leg desperate for release.
It was needless to say they are late for Monty and Harper’s dinner party but everyone compliments their ginger bread and when they ask what the special ingredient is, Bellamy smiles, takes Clarke’s hand and says “Love.”
She rolls her eyes at the cheeniess of him but brings him in for a quick kiss and feels yet again their kid kick in her stomach. She already knows he’ll probably be right and that it’s a girl since no boy of theirs could kick and demand attention that stubbornly but she hopes that at least Cassie inherits some of her father’s cooking habits because Clarke-
Clarke was a disaster.

Animation Magazine interviewed José C. García de Letona and Rita Street! about the process of Space Chickens In Space in how they combined 3 animation studios to make a surreal sci-fi show for Disney XD
Watch out, Foghorn Leghorn, Calimero and Chicken Little! There are a few new animated chickens in the yard! Produced by Ánima Estudios in Mexico, Studio Moshi in Australia, and co-produced by Dublin-based Gingerbread Animation and Disney EMEA, the new 52-part toon is called Space Chickens in Space, and has all the makings of a great sci-fi comedy.
The project is the brainchild of Ánima Estudios’ founder and COO José C. García de Letona , U.S.-based producer Rita Street (Ruby Gloom, Hero: 108) and Norwegian twin designers and musicians Tommy and Markus Vad Flaaten. The imaginative show centers on the adventures of three chickens — Chuck, Starley and Finley — who are accidentally enrolled in an elite intergalactic former military academy. The show runner is Jordan Gaucher (Skunk Fu!) and story editors are Alan Keane and Shane Perez (Oddbods).
Garcia de Letona tells us that he and Street originally wanted to tell a story about siblings living in fish-out-of-water situations, but “we swapped fish for chickens and Earth for space!” He says he was very lucky to get to know the talented Vad Flaatens, who brought their own zany visuals and imaginative take on the world to the show. “The twins have been our creative partners throughout the process and the show has been improved tenfold because of them,” he notes. “Special mention should also go to our distributor CAKE, Studio Moshi, Gingerbread Animation and Disney since the show would not have become a reality without their love and support.”
De Letona says the series is heavily inspired by their favorite sci-fi movies and TV shows. “We also had the opportunity to create a unique universe which at its core is about friendship and brother-sisterhood,” he notes. “We also have a school as our setting, which is a lot of fun to work with, and we hope our audience will really empathize with the characters. Even if it is set in outer space, the show still feels like home.”
Ready to Hatch
Street is especially pleased that one of the show’s main characters is Starley, a feisty young girl chicken. “Starley was originally a boy until Disney had the foresight to recognize that we would need girls in the core cast of the show,” she points out. “Starley is fantastically unique — she’s got anger issues, she can pound entire planets into space dust, but she loves everyone and everything and just wants the entire universe to get along.”
The show’s pre- and post-production happens in Dublin, and the Toon Boom Harmony-based animation is produced in Australia. There are over 30 people in the Australian animation crew, but the whole series has a crew of over 75 people who cover all elements of design, storyboarding, editing etc, That doesn’t include the freelance scriptwriters, actors and other contributors — all of whom would bring the team number over a hundred.
Around the Cluck
According to the Ánima Estudios CEO, one of project’s main challenges was working with all the different production entities spread around the globe. “Our biggest challenge was to figure out how these very distant companies could work together, to build that pipeline from the microscopic level to the macro level,” says Garcia de Letona. “Our main goal was to do it all in a way that kept the values and ideas of the show intact.”
The Vad Flaaten brothers compare the production process to being involved in a long-distance relationship. “There is lots of Skype, Google Docs, Slack, emails and more Skype!!!” they say. “All the producers at the different studios are amazing at synching and spreading information: They’re doing a really impressive job.”
They also believe that the show’s antiheroes and sibling dynamics have universal appeal, something that goes beyond cultural and national definitions of humor. “We think weird, extreme expressions are universally funny and something we really try to push in Space Chickensso that the episodes will be interesting and memorable on a purely visual level,” note the twins, who have quite a global following thanks to their offbeat animated shorts and catchy songs.
“It’s a huge honor to have been able to develop and create humour with so many different people from across the world,” add the Vad Flaatens. “It’s been important to us that as many people along the way, from writers to ‘boarders to individual animators, get their little area of freedom to add humor — be it visual or timing-based or literal. Our hope is that this collective passion shines through.”
The brothers believe that the world needs more international partnerships like Space Chickens in Space. “We think more studios and execs should take a chance and invest in unconventional creative collaborations,” they says. “Space Chickens is the result of many different passionate artists shaping and having fun with the same idea. When people from different corners of the world come together and blend their ideas and inspire each other, beautiful, quirky and fresh stuff is made!”
Street is also quite optimistic about the state of TV animation all over the world. “I love that cartoons have once again become totally surreal,” says the veteran producer. “You don’t have to follow structural storytelling rules so much. Things don’t have to make sense. I think that’s what kids really want nowadays — to feel like they can really ‘own’ cartoons because they feel so random and out of control, which in a small way teaches kids to find joy in the randomness of their messy new-normal lives!”

I’m Dreaming of an Orange Christmas (Repost)
Originally published to Xanga on December 22, 2011
Hey there, Winnebagos. If you're here for the latest characterisation atrocity committed by Red Hood and the Outlaws, I'm afraid you're going to be a bit disappointed. While ripping into this comic will remain a regular feature here, like Suicide Squad, it's being delayed this week because I feel like it. I've got something slightly older but much better for you this week. And it's even seasonally appropriate. Today we're going to run a recap for the Green Lantern Larfleeze Christmas Special #1 from last year~ Here's the cover, as always:
Now, before we begin, let's do a little summary of this character, just in case you don't know who Larfleeze is. And shame on you for not knowing.
Larfleeze was created in the gap of issues between two of the finest Green Lantern events in comics history, Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night. Green Lanterns aren't the only lanterns, and Sinestro decided to make that absolutely true. Hence the Sinestro Corps War: Sinestro creates some yellow rings to offset the green and gathers together a bunch who can best use its fear powers. From there, more lantern colours kept popping up. Long-time rivals the Star Sapphires officially tapped the violet light of love, an old enemy stoked the red fires of rage, and the blue glow of hope was brought about to balance all the groups. And then came this one: the orange light of avarice, held in possession by the greediest, hungriest, most selfish being in the galaxy. His name is Larfleeze, AKA Agent Orange. You can read more of his origin in the collection Green Lantern: Agent Orange, which of course I highly recommend.
But why? Why do I recommend picking up every dang comic with Larfleeze in it that you can find? Well, because Larfleeze is frigging awesome, that's why. He's pretty much the greatest Green Lantern character since the book started in 1959. (Yes, I realise it actually started much earlier with Alan Scott's character, but since Larfleeze is part of the mythos that began with Hal Jordan, we're using Hal's debut as the starting point.) Larfleeze is quirky and weird and damn entertaining. He might be on the negative side of the emotional spectrum, but he's not explicitely evil. He's certainly no Joker or... Vandal Savage, let's say. He's largely hilarious, mostly since he acts like a greedy child most of the time. He's also unreasonably powerful (actual quote from Blackest Night: "Power levels 10,000%"), his ring commits literal identity theft of those slain by it, and he has some hidden depths. Which leads us into the comic we're about to look at now.
We open on Larfleeze's junkyard. Yep, Larfleeze has a junkyard and spends much time on Earth. This comes from an exchange he had with Lex Luthor (who briefly possessed a copy of Larfleeze's ring), who told Larfleeze that one of the most valuable things one can have on Earth is land. And frankly, he has a point. (He's Lex Luthor, he always does.) Larfleeze took this to heart, and obtained for himself a junkyard where he can store all his things and possessions and stuff. I don't think it's ever quite discussed how he obtained it, but my guess is "shenanigans". But I digress.
Also through shenanigans, Larfleeze has heard of the Earth's mighty and amazing guardian, the one they call Santa Claus. Sleeping restlessly in his bed, Larfleeze awakens to a large row of various clocks. Alas, not one cat clock among them, though. Realising the day he's awaited, Larfleeze goes tearassing out of bed, shouting delightedly. (Told you he's like a big child. A very destructive, competently-violent child with a rap sheet as long as your arm and more power than anyone could know what to do with.) Larfleeze gathers up his wishlist, which could put Calvin's to shame, and rushes down the stairs, anticipating what gifts Santa has left for him and how many hours it will take him to unwrap them all (by his estimate, 18. "Perhaps twenty if the ratwaffle cheese wheels are individually wrapped!"). But to his horror, there's nothing under the tree at all. The stockings hang empty.
Larfleeze at first thinks he's been robbed, but then he notices that the cookies and milk are untouched. And then comes one of the reasons why this is among the greatest comics of all time: a recipe. An actual recipe for making orange cookies just like the ones Larfleeze has prepared. When was the last time Batman ever included a recipe for making, I dunno, gingerbread batarangs? Never, that's when. Anyways, Larfleeze concludes that Santa has callously overlooked him in his deliveries, despite his adherence to the decorations and sweet-based offerings. Catching sight of a parade on TV, Larfleeze sees Santa coming down the street. He immediately vacates his house and attacks the parade with razor-fanged reindeer.
In the scuffle, Santa loses his beard, and Larfleeze discovers he is a decoy. He then catches sight of another Santa rushing into Dee Cee's Store of Stuff. He chases the Santa through the store, and discovers a whole group of men dressed in Santa costumes. Larfleeze snarls and threatens their lives until a brave little boy speaks up and tells Larfleeze where Santa is: the North Pole. We then get another brilliant page, this time of a maze made out of the Orange Lantern symbol. For extra awesome, Larfleeze is dressed as Indiana Jones on this page, and also stumbles across Superman's Fortress of Solitude before shrugging and leaving. Oh Larfleeze, if you only knew the rare treasures that lay within it, you would surely salivate at the chance to merely even see them.
After hours of searching, Larfleeze has enough and just begins blasting at the snow and ice. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan, if you were wondering) shows up, and says the ice caps have enough problems with melting without Larfleeze contributing. That's right, Hal Jordan wants you all to go green! Larfleeze, again in petulant child mode, begins demanding that Hal bring out Santa from wherever he's hiding him. Hal insists Santa is just a story told for fun, which Larfleeze can stand even less. Hal then plays his trump card. Christmas, he says, isn't about presents or Santa or getting. It's about having Christmas spirit. Larfleeze, of course, latches on to the word "having", and asks, "How does one... attain this Christmas spirit?" And to help you out, the comic generously includes yet another crafty sort of activity: a Larfleeze Christmas tree ornament to cut out and glue. This thing is pretty boss, and the only reason I haven't done it is because it would ruin the comic.
Hal takes Larfleeze back to his junkyard, and begins searching through it, despite Larfleeze's protests. Hal sorts through Larfleeze's stuff, and gives a little lecture about how Christmas spirit isn't about making the pile of stuff in your backyard bigger (c'mon guys, we all have one). It's about the usual Christmas special mention of giving. Hal then proceeds to give Larfleeze's stuff away to various charities and donation places, all while talking about the spirit of generosity. Larfleeze looks around at his empty junkyard, with only a broken toilet and an empty septic tank left in it, and comments, "I don't think I like Christmas spirit very much." And that, my friends, is why Larfleeze is a delight to read.
Hal continues to try and explain to Larfleeze that Santa isn't real and he shouldn't put so much importance on having stuff, while Larfleeze continues to be Larfleeze. Finally Hal gives up, and drops Larfleeze's Christmas list in disgust before flying off. He turns to give Larfleeze one last piece of advice: "Do yourself a favour, Larfleeze. Look at that list. Look at it close. And ask yourself--Do I really need it?" Larfleeze appears stunned by this. The last page is silent. Larfleeze pores over his list inside his little cabin. Eventually he comes to the very last item at the bottom of the list: "My Family". Larfleeze stares at it, and then curls himself around a pillow and lies down. The end.
Boy, what did I say about hidden depths, huh? Now you see why I read everything that Larfleeze appears in. (Next thing he appears in: Green Lantern New Guardians #4, coming December 28th. Can't wait~ ) Also, the issue then includes a bonus 2-page comic about Orange Lantern member Glomulus, and his quest to find a gift for Larfleeze, and all done in the Tiny Titans style, so it's quite cute. And a full page holiday message picture of all the Earth Green Lanterns (save Kyle) wishing you a happy holidays from DC closes out the issue.
This is a pretty great comic, and I highly recommend picking it up should you stumble across it in the back issues of your local comic shop or some online dealer. DC used to put out Christmas and Halloween specials all the time, but they didn't this year, probably due to the accursed relaunch. Perhaps next year they'll get back on the ball.
Also, it just occurred to me that Larfleeze would be absolutely the greatest Grinch of all time.
