Bosssarenova Trioは、Paula Morelenbaumとドイツ出身のトランペッター、Joo Krausと、同じくドイツのピアニスト、Ralf Schmidによる、Bossa Novaのあたらしい表現を求めるユニット。曲は往時の曲を取り上げて、Bossa Novaをあたらしい解釈で、という試みは、正直有りがちな企画だと思うけど、このドイツ人二人の作る音が、これは確かにNovaかもね。Paulaの歌はこういうあり方にしっくりくるし、洗練されたよい音楽だと思いますよ。

Cuban pianist Omar Sosa shot to international jazz fame during his four years in the East Bay, a brief but creatively fecund period in the late 1990s when his music steadily expanded to encompass sacred Santeria chants, Afro-Ecuadoran rhythms, Moroccan modes, hip-hop cadences and post-bop harmonic vistas.

He returns to the Bay Area this week with three very different ensembles reflecting his ongoing evolution as an artist with globally attuned ears. While each band brings together a far-flung cast of musical innovators, it’s not hard to identify the common thread connecting the combos, namely the hard-hitting pianist’s abiding passion for percussion.

“I’m a percussionist, and I love to play with percussionists,” says Sosa, 52, who grew up in the eastern Cuba city of Camaguey, a stronghold of African culture, and has long lived in Barcelona with his wife and two children. “Thanks to God for giving me the opportunities to play with these masters.”

He opens his four-night SFJazz residency April 20-21 with his long-running Quarteto AfroCubano, a group that’s honed a springy, mercurial body of music that combines Afro-Cuban roots with southern African soul.

Featuring Mozambique native Childo Tomas on electric bass and vocals and Sosa’s Camaguey homies Leandro Saint-Hill on saxophone, flutes and vocals, and Ernesto Simpson on drums and vocals, the quartet is joined by special guest percussionist John Santos, with whom Sosa forged deep ties during his Bay Area stay.

Saturday’s concert introduces a new electronica-laced ensemble that keys on the great French-Martiniquai percussionist Mino Cinelu, best known for his work with Miles Davis and Sting, and German trumpeter Joo Kraus, who contributed gorgeously atmospheric lines on Sosa’s Grammy-nominated 2012 Afri-Lectric project “Eggun.” The special guest is Cuban alto saxophonist and chekere expert Yosvany Terry, another Camagueyano, “who’s the completely acoustic guy,” Sosa says. “He’s going to be inside the river and go with the flow, floating around and being as free as he can.”

Initially booked as Sosa’s JOG Trio, the concert turned into a rare reunion with Cinelu, who stepped up when visa problems prevented folkloric Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles from making the date.

“I played with Mino for four years as a duo, but then he started to play with Sting and got really busy,” Sosa says. “We have so much beautiful chemistry. He was the first guy who introduced me to electronics on the piano. He’s my teacher. He took me to the store and told all the gear to buy. He was the first to tell me about sampling myself.”

On April 23 at SFJazz and April 24 at Kuumbwa, Sosa presents the North American debut of GFS Trio, featuring the innovative Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu and brilliant Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu, with whom Sosa has performed widely as a duo. They’ve also recorded two breathtaking albums, 2012’s “Alma” with the great Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and 2016’s “Eros” with Morelenbaum and Anglo-Middle Eastern vocalist Natacha Atlas.

With Sosa on piano, various keyboards and electronics and Fresu adding percussion and electronics, the duo developed a spacious, gossamer lyricism with “a lot of silence,” says Fresu, a prolific composer who works in theater, dance, radio, television and film.

“With Trilok, the silence is a new instrument for him. It’s completely different than the duo, with more energy. We travel a lot in the music of the world. I’m from Sardinia, so there’s the Mediterranean earth. Omar is Cuba and Africa. And Trilok is India and everywhere. It’s a kind of picture of music of the world.”

Sosa is particularly excited about introducing the GFS Trio to his Bay Area friends and fans, as Fresu and Gurtu have spent far too little time on Bay Area stages in recent years. Gurtu used to perform in Northern California when he toured with guitarist John McLaughlin (in a trio that often featured Berkeley electric bassist Kai Eckhardt), and the world jazz ensemble Oregon, which he joined after the death of his close friend, Collin Walcott. He also performed and recorded at the turn of the century with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell’s pioneering Tabla Beat Science.

“Sometimes I do a Cuban danzón, and Trilok plays danzón on tabla,” Sosa says. “It’s good that people can see the concept of how he plays. He’s got a unique sound. His tuning is completely different. Trilok, Mino and John Santos are my heroes. They’re my three masters and these concerts are a dream come true.”

Bossarenova Trio abre digressão europeia em Coimbra na sexta-feira

O projeto Bossarenova Trio apresenta, a partir de sexta-feira, em Portugal, o novo álbum “Atlântico”, primeira etapa de uma digressão europeia, com atuações previstas na Alemanha e Itália, disse à Lusa a cantora Paula Morelenbaum.

O trio é constituído pela cantora, pelo pianista Ralf Schmid e pelo trompetista Joo Kraus, e inicia a digressão no dia 28, em Coimbra, no Convento S. Francisco, seguindo-se, no dia 06 de março, o Teatro Diogo Bernardes, em Ponte de Lima, no Minho, e, em 07 de março, a Casa da Música, no Porto.

Em declarações à Lusa, Paula Morelenbaum afirmou que, em conjunto, no novo álbum, os músicos apresentam “uma visão contemporânea, e mais atual de uma [expressão] clássica que é a Bossa Nova”.

“A Bossa Nova presta-se a ser tocada como ela é originalmente, mas também a inventar outras sonoridades, sem a ferir”, disse.

A intérprete qualificou os compositores de Bossa Nova como “maravilhosos” e referiu que “ouviam de tudo, jazz, e do bolero ao samba… Eram muito abertos e, os mais eruditos, como Tom Jobim, ouviam música clássica”.

“É daí que surge essa Bossa Nova, que tanto encanta o mundo, é essa fusão da raiz brasileira, africana, que gerou o samba, com a música clássica europeia”, argumentou.

“Samba de Verão” é um dos temas do CD, o segundo álbum do trio, com arranjos coletivos do grupo.

“Os arranjos são coletivos, ninguém assina, mas é uma coisa muito natural, concordamos totalmente, e há uma química muito boa”, disse a cantora à Lusa.

Paula Morelenbaum vaticinou que, “dentro de 300 anos, a Bossa Nova será vista como uma música clássica, tal como as peças de Heitor Villa-Lobos”.

Questionada sobre a situação política no Brasil, a cantora críticou “a censura camuflada” que existe, desde tomada de posse de Jair Bolsonaro, em janeiro do ano passado, após a sua eleição em outubro de 2018.

“Essa censura começou desde o 1.º dia do Presidente, no Governo, e toda a ‘entourage’ da Presidência, também caminha para isso”.

”Existe, obviamente uma reação. Todos nós, artistas, estamos reagindo para que isso não aconteça [generalização da censura]. Se não estivermos atentos, pode acontecer, estamos, realmente a viver um momento perigoso”, alertou.

“Eu acho que esta presidência não tem nada a ver com [o espírito da] Bossa Nova. Este momento que estamos a viver no Brasil não tem nada com Bossa Nova”, reafirmou Paula Morelenbaum.

“A Bossa Nova era uma esperança, era uma coisa totalmente boa e bonita, era uma renovação. Este momento político do Brasil é, ao contrário, tudo horrível. É o que se tem de pior e se pode querer para um país”, disse.

A cantora fez questão de afirmar que nem ela nem os seus próximos “felizmente” votaram em Bolsonaro, “graças a Deus”.

“Estamos torcendo para que alguma coisa dê certo, porque infelizmente, até agora nada deu certo, e fica muito difícil a gente fazer música maravilhosa, uma arte maravilhosa, se este Governo não está incentivando e está assim um ‘salve-se quem puder’’. disse.

Beim traditionellen Weihnachtskonzert wird die beliebte Kombination von Trompete und Orgel gemäß des Saisonmottos "Facetten" klanglich erweitert: Mit Jazz-Trompete und Saxophon gesellen sich zur Königin der Instrumente zwei reizvoll swingende Blasinstrumente, die das ganze Kirchenschiff in neue Klangwogen tauchen werden. Neben Andreas Gräsle an der prächtigen Mönchorgel werden Joo Kraus als Jazz-Trompeter und Dieter Kraus als Saxophonist die beiden renommierten Solisten sein. Das mit Lust und Leidenschaft agierende schwäbische Trio wird unter dem Titel Silence of the night beispielhaft aufzeigen, was weltliche Musik im Kirchenraum auszudrücken vermag, frei nach dem Theologen Friedrich Schleiermacher, dass alle gute Musik letztlich religiöse Musik sei.

Die drei musikalischen Weggefährten tragen Kompositionen, Arrangements und Improvisationen von Antonín Dvorák, Gabriel Fauré, Ennio Morricone u.a. vor wie auch Eigenkompositionen von Joo Kraus. Ihre Interpretationen „verbinden sich zu einem visionären Klangfilm von schlichter Schönheit bis hin zu leidenschaftlicher Expressivität“. Man darf gespannt sein, wenn die Orgel den Orchesterklang nachahmt und Trompete und Saxophon ihren jeweils charakteristischen Klang hinzufügen, welch große Dynamik und welch herrlicher Farbenreichtum bei den einzelnen Arrangements entstehen werden.

Dieter Kraus erhielt seinen ersten Saxophonunterricht mit neun Jahren und gewann in den Folgejahren mehrere Bundespreise von Jugend musiziert. Dem Stipendium der Stadt Ulm für Nachwuchskünstler folgte dann das Studium im Fach Saxophon am Konservatorium in München. Er war Gründungsmitglied des Saxophonquartetts Saxofourte, mit dem er den 1. Preis beim internationalen Kammermusikwettbewerb Gaetano Zinetti in Verona gewann. Von 1995 bis 2006 konzertierte er bei den wichtigsten nationalen Festivals. Tourneen führten ihn nach Syrien, den Libanon, Ägypten und Australien. 2003 erfolgte die Teilnahme am Weltsaxophonkongress in Minneapolis (USA). Dieter Kraus spielte in namhaften nationalen wie internationalen Orchestern. Parallel dazu begann ab 1996 eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem Organisten Andreas Gräsle. Zu dieser Formation gesellte sich 2001 der Trompeter Joo Kraus dazu. 2006 gründete Dieter Kraus sein neues Saxophonensemble Der 5te Mann. Sein Vater brachte Joo Kraus die ersten Griffe auf der Trompete bei. Mit 19 Jahren durch den ersten Preis beim Bundeswettbewerb Jugend musiziert in die Szene katapultiert, sammelte er zunächst fünf Jahre Bühnenerfahrung, unter anderem mit der Rock-Band Kraan. Von 1985 bis 1988 studierte er an der Hochschule für Musik in München bei Paul Lachenmeir. 1986 trat er erstmals mit der Band deWinkelHattler in Erscheinung. 1991 gründete er mit dem Ulmer Bassisten Hellmut Hattler das Hip-Hop-Duo Tab Two. In den 2000er Jahren schrieb Joo Kraus vermehrt eigene Songs. Er produzierte im ältesten Tonstudio Havannas ein von kubanischen Rhythmen inspiriertes Album (Sueno) und arrangierte Songs von Michael Jackson zu einer intellektuell anspruchsvollen Verbeugung vor dem King of Pop. Joo Kraus veröffentlichte kürzlich sein mittlerweile fünftes Soloalbum Painting Pop. Dafür erhielt er den EchoJazz als bester Trompeter. Seit 2001 holten die Musiker Dieter Kraus und Andreas Gräsle den Jazztrompeter mit dem unverwechselbaren Sound als ideale Ergänzung zu sich ins Boot. Andreas Gräsle studierte Kirchenmusik in Stuttgart (Orgel: Jon Laukvik) und absolvierte die Konzertreifeprüfung im Fach Orgel bei Daniel Roth in Saarbrücken. Weitere Studien in Alter Musik bei Andrea Marcon schlossen sich an. Er war Stipendiat des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) und 1991 Preisträger des Internationalen Johann-Pachelbel-Wettbewerbs Nürnberg. Von 1996 bis März 2003 war er Kantor und Organist an der Augustinuskirche Schwäbisch Gmünd. Seit April 2003 ist er als Bezirkskantor an der Konstanzer Kirche in Ditzingen tätig. Darüber hinaus ist er ein gefragter Kammermusik-Partner und gibt Konzerte als Organist und Cembalist. Zuletzt trat er bei den Ansbacher Bachwochen sowie zusammen mit dem Württembergischen Kammerorchester Heilbronn auf. Beim diesjährigen Festival Europäische Kirchenmusik Schwäbisch Gmünd realisierte er eine Stummfilm- Improvisation zu Charlie Chaplins Lichter der Großstadt. Mehrere CD-Produktionen mit Orgel- und Kammermusikwerken, eigenen Improvisationen und Arrangements zu Kinderliedern ergänzen seine Tätigkeit. Gräsle ist Dozent für Partiturspiel an der Stuttgarter Musikhochschule. Der Eintritt zu dem Konzert ist frei – am Ausgang wird zur Deckung der Unkosten und zum Erhalt der Konzertreihe um Spenden gebeten.

Über die Konzertreihe: Der Kirchheimer Konzertwinter wird vom Freundeskreis für Kirchenmusik in Kirchheim/Weinstraße e.V. in Zusammenarbeit mit der Protestantischen Kirchengemeinde veranstaltet. Alte Musik steht regelmäßig im Mittelpunkt der 1990 gegründeten Konzertreihe in der Protestantischen Kirche St. Andreas. Der Themenschwerpunkt in der Saison 2018/2019 lautet: „FACETTEN“. Künstlerischer Leiter ist der Bassbariton und Bachpreisträger Dominik Wörner.
