I draw Dr. Crane a lot, so I'm trying to narrow down how I want to render Scarecrow.

Still undecided/just planning and testing expressions. I want him to be very animated/almost whimsical in costume 🎃

For some bonus context, my interpretation of him is very reminiscent of a more classic Scarecrow in personality, I think. Maybe a hint of btaa. And the rhyming whimsy of salecrow.

Basically, the total opposite vibe of my version of Crane (very clinical, controlled, and monotone). Donning the costume gives him the opportunity to do whatever he wants without holding back.

All of this to say, he says hroo hraa for sure.

If you had to boil Crane down into his essential characteristics, like the BTAS team tried to do with other rogues like Mr. Freeze, what would those characteristics be?

Ooh! Good question:

Fear obsession. Let's get the obvious one out of the way. Crane is obsessed with fear and all the overt and subtle ways in which it guides both individuals and society. Almost everything he does in his life is dedicated to his pursuit of understanding fear so it's his number one characteristic in my humble opinion as it really does influence most of his decisions.

Apathy. Crane does not care for his fellow man outside of their ability to serve his goals. He doesn't generally feel guilt or shame for what he inflicts on others as he believes his work is worth the fallout. On the rare occasion he sees himself in someone and tries to "help" them, he will become extremely volatile at the first sign of his help being unappreciated or unwanted and take that anger out on the individual tenfold.

Pride. Just like I said above, Crane is very proud of his achievements and truly believes that he is doing something which will benefit his understanding of how the world works (and help him to punish a world which he believes has treated him with unkindness). He's a prideful man and will take any slight to his ego very personally even if he doesn't show it initially.

Manipulation. Jonathan Crane is a master psychologist and he happily uses his skills to manipulate others to his needs and to set events in motion that he's either curious about or needs to occur for his plans. His manipulations can be overt or subtle, but they are always present as he works for himself and his goals above all else.

God we really gotta talk about this comic’s portrayal of scarecrow more. I need more interactions between him and nightwing honestly. The idea of Jonathan Crane someone who’s gone through his whole life being bullied preferring to stay trapped then ruin an actual genuine connection he made is so so sad.

Also him being excited and engrossed by seeing his own greatest fear is so him. I just love it.
