Jolrael, Voice of Zhalfir
for March of The Machine: The Aftermath
This was the buy-a-box promo art and it was actually very surprising to know that the day they released it!
AD: Victor Ochoa / Client: Wizards Of The Coast
I'm so proud of this one! Everything in it went so smooth, since the amazing art direction to the final draft :>
And I also feel I'll never going to be able to do something that good for the rest of my life. That's it!

I want to write fanfic about her this is such a cool character
Realized I should tell you all about my Mirran OC. Her name is Ceres and she's an insane GU Neurok Conservationist for Blinkmoths. She does not care about ANYTHING else on the plane. She survived the initial battle for Mirrordin by Not Being Anywhere Near Anyplace and fucking off to live with the Blinkmoths and tries desperately to keep people from poaching them for Blinkmoth Serum or Hexgold. Both sides think she's on the opposite side because nobody can tell which because she covers up constantly with a Ghillie suit. She's not telling because she doesn't care. Anyone who gets close enough that they could ask is put in the firing line of whatever the Mirran/New Phyrexian equivalent of a shotgun is. She does not care about anything on the plane other than the Blinkmoths and preserving an endangered species. i just wanted to share this concept w y'all cause I'm not really gonna ever Do anything with her i just let her rattle around my brain sometimes cause she amuses me.

I love your blog and I see it says "please talk to me about MTG" So here's a question
What's your preferred format?? I'm a Commander player myself but I've also played Pioneer, Pauper, and legacy! (Proxies legacy tho ain't nobody got money for that XD)
And follow up question, what's your fave deck? :3
awwww im glad you like my blog <3
i am also a commander player, its the format i enjoy the most and i think playing mtg as a social game is super fun!!
i used to play standard back during theros block but that didn't last very long cause i was young and bad at the game lol but i also occasionally play modern and pioneer decks with my wife and ive played pauper a few times (i love mono black burn lmao)
as for favorite deck ive said this a few times but its probably currently between ojer axonil, deepest might, gandalf the white (i have a post about this deck on my mtg sideblog), ukkima, stalking shadow (also have a post about this ;3) and some honorable mentions are jolrael, voice of zhalfir and niv-mizzet supreme :3
thank you for the ask!!!!

One the one hand I loved Teferi’s story today and am VERY jazzed about the possibility of Kaervek/Rashida/Alexi/Mageta/Jolrael/The Talruum/Jibari/Shauku/etc having more stories and adventures
On the other hand if 25+ years MtG story enjoying have taught me anything it's that a character returning after a long absence is often not in their or the story's best interest

Some notes on collector numbers for March of the Machine: The Aftermath
So, in this week's Weekly MtG we had a preview for Jolrael, featuring 5 versions:
I have no idea how visible the collector numbers are, but it looks like we have a regular version at number 33, an un-numbered old-border at number 83 (but that is barely legible full-size), a version with a fanicer-than-average-but-not-that-fancy border at number 133, an extended art version at number 168, and finally the buy-a-box version at number 230.
So, uh, that is actually unusual.
Generally extended art rares come in just before the promo ones (and after the showcase ones). So, for example March of the Machine had them start at collector number 343 (and they do tend to run continuous).
If you allow for a few rares and/or mythics after Jolrael being eligible for the extended art treatment (e.g. Planeswalkers have their own thing), a couple of promo packs, and the bundle... you wouldn't get past 200, never mind up to 230.
So 1. I'm guessing that Wizards realised that having one of their weaker treatments given such high collector numbers was weird (because yeah it kinda was) and 2. I'm guessing we're getting some sort of showcase frame or fancy treatment ("Spark foils!") in the interim? Like there are more than 50 integers between 168 and 230, I know my maths.
I'm not sure why WotC wouldn't choose to spoil it early, though. Like, they released a whole boatload of info on the comparable stuff for LOTR a few weeks ago to help stores estimate demand.

The Lore of Core 2021: Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse
“A former court mage from Zhalfir who lived in the wilderness, Jolrael was among those attracted to Teferi’s isle when it phased out of existence. Jolrael’s distrust of humans caused her to ally herself with the shaman named Kaervek for some time, but she sensed his true motives and turned on him. When the war was over, she returned to the wild.”

30 Day Magic Challenge Day 10: Favourite Set or Block
I liked Khans of Tarkir, I quite liked Origins and Battle for Zendikar, but I have to go way back and say that probably there is something to the first block you ever play.
I loved the Mirage block, and I still do.
Beautiful flavour, and more beautiful illustrations (some of them) - especially lands.
I probably cannot narrate the entire story of the block succintly, but for those who are not familiar, just quickly what it is about: the flavour is kind of (North-)African-themed, the setting was Dominaria’s equatorial continent of Jamuraa, dominated by several civilisations. Teferi (yes, the Teferi) had been making experiments with time-space continuum on his island near Jamuraa’s coast, and not wishing his experiments to be disturbed (for the safety of everyone), he decided to use his influence to establish peace between Jamuraa’s nations. This thrived until one day, Teferi’s experiments messed up and he vanished.
The energies released by this pinged off three powerful wizards: Mangara, Jolrael and Kaervek. They traveled to Jamuraa and wanted to investigate the isle. Mangara (basically White-aligned) decided to sort of continue in Teferi’s footsteps and maintain peace so everything could be sorted out. Kaervek (basically Black-aligned), on the other hand, desired power, and was jealous of Mangara, so he decided to turn things on their head and started a war. To get the edge, he talked Jolrael (basically Green-aligned) into helping him by providing her beasts to serve him.
I love this part: Jolrael had lived most of her life among animals in her jungle, didn’t really understand people and politics, so Kaervek managed to scare her by showing how Mangara can manipulate people via politics. I think I have something for Green a-social mages... (cf. Nissa). In that way, Jolrael is a forerunner of sorts of Nissa’s.
That’s the basic starting point, and the thing I loved the most about the block. The whole flavour mix (art+story+all) is just great.

I was wondering if you could give a quick who's who on the legendary creatures from M21. I'm relatively new to the game and don't recognize most of them, but I hear that they're returning characters.
This is a greatly oversimplification of these relationships:
Barrin was Teferi’s teacher when he was younger (at the Tolarian Academy).
Kaervek was an evil wizard that Teferi fought against.
Mangara was a Wizard that Teferi teamed up with to fight Kaervel (after Mangara got rescued).
Niambi is Teferi’s daughter.
Radha fought alongside Teferi (I think it was during the Phyrexuan invasion of Dominaria).
Subira was Teferi’s wife.
EDIT: It turns out, Teferi and Radha fought together during The Time Spiral crisis. I also forgot Jolrael which was another wizard he teamed up with in the Mirage story.
