Peter Rowan Leads Phil Lesh & Friends into the Woods on “Clubhouse Sessions”

- Big band includes Stu Allen, John Molo, Barry Sless, Holly Bowling, Elliott Peck, Jason Crosby and Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz

Peter Rowan came to the Terrapin Clubhouse and took Phil Lesh & (a large group of) Friends into the country and bluegrass.

With the octogenarian - but not in the way - Rowan and Lesh at the helm, a stellar band of relative whippersnappers featuring guitarists Stu Allen, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Barry Sless (pedal steel); singer Elliott Peck; drummer John Molo; fiddler Jason Crosby; and pianist Holly Bowling added respectful modernity to songs from Old & In the Way, Rowan and the Grateful Dead.

Though this was a one-off band for Episode 4 of Lesh’s “Clubhouse Sessions,” it couldn’t have been more tight but loose on “Dupree’s Diamond Blues,” which peaked as first Bowling, then Crosby and Sless transformed the studio into a dusty, Old West saloon. It’s a magical bit of musical inspiration made possible by players adept at picking their spots, Molo’s agile, light-touch drumming and a sonic approach that left room for Lesh’s bass to gurgle to the surface.

There’s not a wasted second in the 40-minute performance video, bookended as it is with a version of “Midnight Moonlight” that nods slyly to “Throwing Stones” and a “Dire Wolf” that finds Sless recalling Workingman’s Dead-era Jerry Garcia on the sit-down guitar.

Peck sings “Ripple” beautifully with Lesh taking over as the band crosses the bridge and Rowan reminds listeners he can still yodel on “Land of the Navajo.”

Beyond grateful for this magical offering.

This is a show where too many things happen all the time and everyone is always in peril or trying to save someone else, very scifi soap-opera. It also starts with the love story between Max and Liz, but it's much more than that.

The strength of this show is in its cast/characters. It's an ensemble, they all have chemistry together and different types of relationships. There's couples, there's exes, there's unrequited loves, there's best friends, new friends, siblings... yes, some characters have more weight and screentime than others, and not everything is very well though out but ultimately, it works more often than not and the relationships develop instead of stagnate.

You see them together and you see why they're friends, or why they like each other, or why they have problems.

This is a show where a gay character says 'I'm gay', and shockingly, the bisexual character also says the word bisexual. More than once, even! There's also another not-straight character who, if I remember correctly, remains unlabeled but it makes sense for them (and they discover it in their late twenties too).

It's entertaining; it's dramatic but not unkind. It's not without issues, but it's fun. And it has a pretty good ending, with decent to good farewells for every character, even though it got cancelled. Also recommended here by @bugboybuck if you want a second opinion.

Song Review(s): Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. the Wolfpack - “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Aiko Aiko,” “Ramble on Rose” and “Truckin’” (Live, Feb. 8, 2023)

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. the Wolfpack took a short walk in the woods before lighting into “Greatest Story Ever Told” and their Feb. 8 gig/stream from New York.

One of four freebies, “Greatest Story” was essentially a let’s-take-our-time-getting-warm deal before the Wolfpack transported everyone to New Orleans with their Dixieland wailing on Weir’s Dr. John-inspired arrangement and lyrics on “Aiko Aiko.”

And it was here the Bros’ RatDog-esque backgrounds came to the fore.

While “Aiko” was lively enough to withstand such challenging circumstances, a meandering “Ramble on Rose” was less so. And it is telling when crowds still try to sing along at the Grateful tempo nearly 28 years after the last Dead show.

The band wove pieces of “Eternity” into the “Truckin’” that followed. It was the second consecutive tune to egg on the crowd with a reference to New York and found Weir remembering all the words. But the song benefitted most from the ’Pack’s strings and horn charts.

The accusations against President Trump fall on deaf ears because the political left has spent the last several decades ensuring that no one takes such allegations seriously.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Donald Trump is a fascist, a Nazi even. And you don’t have to take my word for it. The entirety of the political and media establishments is saying as much. The Atlantic says so. Vice President Kamala Harris says so. Even Hillary Clinton says so. The closing argument of this election, it seems, is that nothing matters except that Donald Trump is Hitler reincarnated.

The problem for the Democratic candidate and her supporters is that nobody cares. This “case” against Donald Trump won’t sway a single vote.

To be clear, it’s not that nobody would care if they had reason to, but they don’t have a reason. The accusations against President Trump fall on deaf ears because the political left has spent the last several decades—and the last couple of centuries, in some cases—ensuring that no one takes such allegations seriously.

For starters, the left has a “boy who cried wolf” problem. No one pays the slightest bit of attention to Democrats when they prattle on about Republicans being fascists because they have done so for almost as long as anyone can remember. Various wags on social media have insisted that Democrats have compared “every Republican since Reagan” to Hitler. In truth, it goes back even further than that, to the dawn of the modern GOP. As Steven Hayward noted ten years ago, on the 50th anniversary of Barry Goldwater’s famous convention speech, even he was “Hitler”:

Martin Luther King, Jr.: “We see dangerous signs of Hitlerism in the Goldwater campaign.”

Civil rights activist Roy Wilkins: Goldwater’s election “would bring about a police state.”

California Governor Pat Brown: Goldwater’s acceptance speech “had the stench of fascism…. All we needed to hear was ‘Heil Hitler.’”

Jackie Robinson: “I would say that I now believe I know how it felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.”

San Francisco Mayor John Shelley: The Republicans “had Mein Kampf as their political bible.”

None of this is to say that a wolf will never, ever appear on the political scene. Rather, it’s to say that because of the left’s fecklessness, if one does, no one will ever recognize it as such.

A second problem, which predates even the six-decade-old “wolf” matter, is the left’s general abuse of the language, which also makes it hard for voters to take it seriously.
