The Bermuda Group, Dean Berkeley And His Entourage
Artist: John Smibert (American, born Scotland, 1688–1751)
Date: 1728
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Yale University Art Gallery
Description:
In 1729, Dean George Berkeley set out from London to found a college in Bermuda "for the better supplying of churches in our foreign plantations and for converting the savage Americans to Christianity." Berkeley's friend John Wainwright commissioned a portrait of the members of the expedition from John Smibert, a minor Scottish painter whom Berkeley had invited to teach art in the new college. The painting was begun in London, and was completed after the group arrived in Newport to await additional funding for their college. Although Wainwright did not accompany Berkeley to the New World, Smibert places him prominently in the foreground. Dean Berkeley stands at the right next to his infant son Henry, his wife Anne, and her companion Miss Handcock. The two wigged gentlemen are John James and Richard Dalton, administrators for the new college. At the far left, looking out at the viewer, stands the artist himself. When the Bermuda college scheme failed, Smibert, the first academy-trained painter to work in the American colonies, established a studio in Boston, where he became the city's most sought-after portraitist, enjoying a lofty professional reputation. The Bermuda Group would remain his most ambitious work. As the most sophisticated group portrait painted in the colonies during the first half of the eighteenth century, it was a source of inspiration to numerous artists during the succeeding eighty years.

13 & 18 for the OC asks please? thank you💕
13. Do they enjoy poetry?
Boston, 1738/9 isn't exactly what Anne Elliot might call a great age for poetry, and Nellie's schooling is probably kindest described as erratic. She's probably had some Shakespearean sonnets, almost certainly slogged through Anne Bradstreet's "Dialogue Between Old England and New" (and had some Thoughts. Notes, even.), and has made it through Cato's Distichs for her children's education. The only time she's at all invested in poetry is, apparently, Dryden's translation of the Aeneid, which is more for the sake of the slapdash book club going on in John Smibert's studio early on in the narrative. It's not that she doesn't enjoy it (okay, she doesn't enjoy a lot of what I've just listed) - she's predisposed towards essays and histories, which are - bonus! - easier to find.
18. How easy is it to become their enemy?
Difficult to say! It's relatively easy to get on her bad side, but that's not a guarantee she'll do anything about it. Her morals and personal inclinations (what I suppose determines whether she likes anyone?) are relatively flexible in the service of "staying out of trouble," "paying off her and her late husband's debts" and "keeping beneath notice." The late and unlamented Lieutenant Nibley did have to work at it.

Captain John Garish by John Smibert American, born Scotland, 1688–1751 Oil on canvas United States, 1737
John Smibert was a Scottish-born American painter active in the early 18th century and widely considered to be the first American-born professional artist.
Captain John Garish was a merchant mariner sailing the American Colonies and the Caribbean. He was a highly-regarded seaman who was instrumental in establishing trade agreements between the American Colonies and other nations.
In the years leading up to 1737, the American Colonies were beset with political turmoil, economic instability and rampant crime. Despite this, cultural and economic growth flourished and the rich cultural heritage of the Colonies was preserved.
John Smibert's painting of "Captain John Garish" is an iconic portrait of a proud mariner, dressed in elegant clothes and a tricorn hat, standing proudly against a deep blue background. Smibert used a combination of bright colors, delicate brushstrokes and masterful lighting to create a sense of dignity and grandeur. This painting captures an important moment in American colonial history and showcases the proud spirit of the American seafarer. Always at your service, AI Art Detective

Eleanor Nightingale (1727). John Smibert (American, 1688-1751). Oil on canvas. Dallas Museum of Art.
Eleanor Nightingale poses clasping her silvery satin wrapping gown, a fashionable informal dress of the period. She gestures appropriately toward her husband, whose companion portrait would have been displayed nearby. This was painted the year she was married, commissioned to display Edward's new wife, a beautiful and voluptuous young woman. The column and green drapery in the background were invented by the artist to lend an air of importance and drama to the image. John Smibert was extremely talented at painting young women. This work is considered his most appealing London portrait of a female sitter.

Portrait of a Woman (Judith Colman Bulfinch?), John Smibert , c. 1734, Cleveland Museum of Art: American Painting and Sculpture
The appearance of a professionally trained British painter in the American colonies in 1729 marks a curcial point in the history of American art. Smibert not only imported the skills necessary to convey the impression of substantial, rounded forms in a picture, but his commercial success also inspired others to contemplate careers as painters. Born in Edinburgh and schooled in London and Italy, Smibert attracted numerous clients upon his arrival in Boston. The low bodice, long neck, and sinuous curl of hair in this portrait follow British conventions for depicting women. Research continues as to the identity of the sitter, long thought to be Mrs. Thomas Bulfinch (born Judith Colman, 1707-1765), since that name does not appear in Smibert's recently discovered records. Size: Framed: 94 x 81 x 6 cm (37 x 31 7/8 x 2 3/8 in.); Unframed: 75.6 x 62.2 cm (29 3/4 x 24 1/2 in.) Medium: oil on canvas
