Yes I play genshin (cyno main) but I'm a lazy player and I play once every full moon (I'm still in the fandom tho) I do recommend you install it because I think hoyo released an update to lighten the storage genshin takes on mobile by a lot, also if you ever start playing hmu so we can play together :)

Furry Visual Novel Book Club: Echo Week 9 SPOILERS

Hi everyone, here is the SPOILER FREE discussion post for “Echo - Carl’s Route B Ending”

“Let it Help Us”

The choice that locks the game on the route’s bad end. Chase tells Carl to let James I help the group. He’s afraid of what it will do to Carl, but is desperate enough to try to escape the nightmare they’ve found themselves in.

Chase falls asleep and eventually wakes to Carl cuddling him. The two grope and touch each other while Neutral plays over the scene, indicating the casualness and ease Carl has in expressing himself now. Chase is somewhat put-off by how forward Carl is acting, but lets Carl tease him. The two eventually stop when they can hear Jenna and Raven from downstairs. 

Chase heads downstairs and sets the group to start looking for ‘something’ to open the door. The following scenes play out extremely similarly to the good end. The option to ‘skip’ dialogue doesn’t appear as the code fully separates the route choices though. (Something I’m hoping to try and alleviate with a fan patch once we see if there’s any updates for the anniversary…)

The first split occurs when Carl no longer hides at the base of the stairs, as Carl no longer has his panic attack. Instead, Carl comes downstairs confidently and tells the group that the letter is located in the stove.

Carl tries to get the letter from the stove himself, ignoring the ‘husky’ voice of Jenna demanding answers. When he’s unable to reach it, Carl responds in anger, punching the stove. Carl shoves Chase into the stove. His words and actions conveying this probably isn’t someone whose familiar with Chase.

Carl instructs Chase to grab the letter tucked into the stove. Just as Chase grabs the paper, ‘rough-tipped fingers’ run down his arm. Chase yells and drops down, Carl pulling him out in response. Carl pats Chase down, telling him that James I had told him where the paper was, and encourages Chase to try to grab it again. Jenna grabs the paper from Chase, slashing him and injuring his ankle in the same way as the good ending. Carl strikes Jenna this time though, drawing a few drops of blood. Raven takes Jenna upstairs again as previously, while Carl and Chase talk, Chase is taken aback by how Carl is acting.

From the information from Route A... the shadow-tendril monster does seem more likely to be ~A~ version of James I as it doesn’t not ‘attack’ Chase here. Much like the Smoke-Monster from the Mansion-Hallways seems to a ~A~ version of John. Though this lines up kinda funky with what happens later on, and the decision to make it a ‘slithering-thing’ that's reminiscent of the Mass-Grave site is very peculiar. Maybe it’s the same kind of monster? A coincidence?

Carl and Chase read the letter, Carl insisting that John is the one at fault still. Noticeably, Carl does in fact not check his balls when Chase asks about them. The door unlocks like last time, and the group assembles to head out. 

En route to the fire, the shadow entity from before chases after the duo. Carl pulls Chase onto his back again, this time indignant about having to help him.The ‘slithering thing’ slides through the sage bush with ease as Carl and Chase tumble down a hill again. Carl pulls Chase up as the two make it to the bonfire. As it approaches them Carl’s words are more tense this time instead of stammering like before. Chase seizes up again as he passes out.

This certainly throws a wrench into ‘what’ the ‘slithering-thing’ is, as why would a version of James be attacking James and Chase. It is certainly possible that ‘the entity’ controlling the situation simply sent it after the two anyways to get them TO the bonfire for whatever reason. This is the part that confuses the most about the nature of the ‘slithering-thing’. Maybe it’s a recreation, a ‘snake-in-the-grass’ for John letting James into his home? Maybe whatever terrible thing pursues Sam and Chase later on is reflective of how James is? Some sort of lover’s quarrel type monster, reflecting John/James being a couple and Jack/Samuel? It’s definitely possibly all up in the air and there’s a chance Howly and George just forgot about making James I a ‘slithering-thing’ when bringing it up in TSR and later Echo routes too.

Chase awakens in the beige room again to Jenna’s choking sobs from being hanged. He runs in to find her in the same situation and the scene plays out the same until this time Carl doesn’t rush in with the knife. Chase decides to grab it in desperation, deciding he has to saw her loose from the noose.

Carl eventually stumbles into the room, reluctantly and wordlessly lifting up the fox while Chase saws the rope, taking much longer to do so than when Carl had done it.

Chase begins to regret letting James take control, saddened and frightened that his friend isn’t ‘here’ with them in the situation. Carl and Chase argue again, but Jenna interjects this time, voice completely changed. Carl calls out to ‘John’, and Jenna responds, seemingly completely possessed again by this point. John warns Chas that James shouldn’t be trusted, a hint of Jenna breaking through, but John quickly takes over as the group determines that John and James are preventing the other from speaking freely again. The group go through the concrete door as last time and Chase has the same vision of the red aura from the mines before passing out.

The group wake up in the master bedroom again and realize they’re still trapped in the hysteria. Jenna heads to the hanging tree, leaving the group behind like last time and the group follow. Carl reacts more coldly to the body this time, not as frightened. John is less reactive as well at this point. Carl heads towards the body with Chase this time, still more angry and confident. Just as before Chase is able to hear the same conversation between James and John.

Chase eventually wakes again, Carl less concerned about him than last time. They find the same letter in the coat pocket. Upon reading the incomplete news article, Jenna attacks Carl with the knife again, this point marking the full split of the route.

James is able to outmaneuver John, sending the fox flying with a punch. Chase begs for the two to stop, the violence of seeing his two friends try to kill each other to much for him to handle. Chase has to tackle Carl this time as he’s about to kill John. After wrestling on the ground for a small amount of time, James agrees to carry Chase back to the bedroom and Raven helps John to the basement of the mansion. The two argue as James ransacks the room, presumably searching for more letters.

Chase laments losing Carl like this as James makes a move to quiet comfort the otter.

John quickly shifts the mood, feeling Chase’s body up and down on the bed. Chase tells him to stop but John offers a counter offer in a hand-job

The track ‘Heart Beat’ plays, a droning noise accompanied by a rhythmic beat mimicking a heart. Chase lets him continue… 

The two continue, Chase enjoying it despite realizing it’s not the best time for it. John tries to play with the otter’s rear but Chase is able to talk him out of it. The two finish.

Okay so I fully believe the intent for this scene is that James is radiating some sort of aura that either: 1. Makes Chase more susceptible to the hysteria so he’s going along more. 2. Is some low level hypnosis on it’s own. I’m more inclined to theory 1 when taking the game as a WHOLE ... BUT

I think this can be read now (which makes this wrong because it DEFINITELY wasn’t the case on writing but it’s fun), that Sam is taking over more. James’ aura is letting the Echoes controlling Carl and Chase come out more, and Sam is falling back on instincts, letting his body be used and using his body for what he wants. Also we’ve seen Sam just slut it out for James III before and top the ram when he was angry because it felt good to be in control, not just for the cash or desperation/means to an end like the blowjob scene. What I’m saying is that Sam has a Ram and/or Hendricks fetish.

Otter squeaks is what I’m highlighting here not the sexiness in the worlds most evil hand-job

Chase falls asleep next to Carl…

The same cackling from earlier in route when bins were being moved around wakes Chase. He flicks the lights on, a young fox in overalls stands in the hallway before running into the darkness. Chase follows a shape of horns into the basement, the sound of child-like voices can be heard from below.

Carl chokes the boy as he tries to scream… Chase wakes up again in the upstairs bedroom, having suffered another nightmare.

Raven screams from the basement and Chase painfully limps down to help him. Chase makes it to the weight room… Jenna and Raven are seemingly absent despite the screams and pools of blood present… like what had happened to Chase after being stabbed by Jenna on the death-ending of the good end.

Chase is knocked out from a hit to the back of the head and eventually wakes to being hog-tied in what appears to be a mine-shaft. Carl stacks boxes as the eyes of fox children stare at Chase from dark corners of the room. James wakes Chase up, now more bloody and fully in control of Carl.

James confirms that the body of Jenna and Raven disappeared after he killed them. James’ child victims surround Chase, eventually helping him out of the otter’s bindings. James is pouring gasoline on all of the evidence Trisha has gathered as Chase begs for Carl to stop James. James says he would have just stabbed Chase, but lost it ‘in’ Raven after killing him due to the body disappearing. A fox child slaps a lit lighter from James’ hand just as the ram goes to torch the gas, sending it falling to the floor. Chase uses the opportunity to escape starts to run out of the mine… and just as he reaches the exit -

As the fire erupts, the illusion dispels itself, Chase can tell he’s in the crawlspace now. He shouts for Carl. James appears, still in control of Carl and rushes Chase who tries his best to escape. The fox children drag James back into the fire … until Chase stops to rescue Carl. Chase holds onto the ram until-

Chase nearly passes out, Carl now back and helping the otter escape the burning mansion.

"And then sitting in the desert, my head in Carl's lap. I watch his eyes glitter in the dancing firelight. His eyes are blank and far away. I reach up to touch his face, say thanks somehow. He doesn't look down."

The scene cuts as the credits roll, “Echo Theme Dark '' plays, a twisted version of opening theme, contrasted by the nostalgic and hopeful version of Carl’s good ending.  A distorted and dark version of the CG with the duo on bean bag is displayed as the credits drone on ominously. We’re kicked to the main menu… the player’s choice having led the two to a dark end.

We get a glimpse of what Echo does when Chase gets to bang his friends. We see what happens when Sam/The Player chooses the option of instant gratification with Carl earlier in the route, getting squished underneath him uncomfortably as a ‘consequence’ for trying to take advantage of the ram whilst he was inebriated. And we see what happens when Chase tries to take the easy way out.

“You just upset we didn’t go all the way earlier?”

If you were still thinking this could MAYBE be a romance game this line drives it into you that shit will go sideways if you let Chase stagnate and take the path of less resistance... and also maybe you shouldn’t be banging your friends when shit is hitting the fan...

The ending is definitely dark, two of your friends are dead, and one is basically literally a husk of himself at the end. It’s implied the fox-children took James ‘out’ of Carl... but I definitely read it as they maybe took some of Carl as well. Though it could definitely be the trauma of being the one who murdered his friends brutally and set his house on fire. Even if he accepts James did it... Chase and Carl’s relationship is probably forever ruined by Chase is the one who convinced Carl to let James help. Carl probably won’t have the best faculties in owning up to his mistake this time around...

I also want to talk about the Evil Hand-Job. Not only is it messing around with a known serial murdering pedophile, but there are two really fucked up implications. Chase knows his body ‘wants’ it, but James is using some sort of supernatural aura to get Chase’s mind into the mood. Chase moves without thinking, his body numb... like he’s possessed himself to the ram’s desire. There’s also the implication that James was only interested in Chase because he’s so thin and small... paying attention to the otter’s lithe stomach. This has... obvious implications... Which is why I call this event the World’s Most Evil Hand-Job.

I don’t belief those two facts contribute necessarily to the overall narrative, but just serve to make it more fucked up. The act and its consequences, Chase passing out so James can murder everyone, serves the narrative as a whole as we’ll see later on in the game, especially with Leo’s bad-end (or hell Route in General) as well as Tj and Flynn’s route.

Well that was Carl’s entire route! We’ve seen everything it has to offer and talk about what we could with the knowledge we have. Do you have any overall thoughts on the route? Any glaring problems or anything you want to highlight that you liked?

I definitely am much more positive on the route after replaying it for this analysis/book club. I still think it’s the ‘weakest’ routes, but it actually sets up a lot of concepts and character pay off that we see later. It even weaves into itself in ways that I didn’t see before or understand my first time through. Okay maybe Jeremy x Carl isn’t as great as I thought as it would be because that incident is what really set Carl off initially but I can work with that. And it being the ‘weakest’ route isn’t even a bad thing, because every other route is completely jaw-dropping in quality. An 8/10 to 9/10s and 10/10s is sill excellent writing.

Pacing the game out helped more with the ‘pacing’ issue the route has, being stuck in the looping hallways, so that probably made that portion ‘easier’ to stomach I will admit though. I’m not sure how to fix that issue, as being stuck in a physical meta-physical ‘circle’ as Sam says over and over again... kinda the point of the game as a whole? Definitely something to think about, and something I will try to improve, at least on the bed end, with a fan patch that will let you skip dialogue before the full split.

The anniversary of the game is on Saturday, and last year they updated the game. There was a planned Carl rewrite that Howly did not get around to writing, but there’s been hints that another Echo Project writer, Redd, MIGHT be doing it? So if that does in fact happen on Saturday, I will announce Sunday we will be looking into that instead of the next route we vote on.

The ever-lovely and awesome @basmathgirl gave me some very sage advice on trying to push through this... I guess it’s time to call it writer’s block now. Anyway, it was to set small goals.

These are the WIPs I’m hoping to get done and how many words I’ve written on them since trying for a small goal (in this case, it was literally to write anything, even if it was a single word):

“The Price” chapter 1 (FrostHunter, The Flash) - 79 words

“15 Minutes” chapter 6 (John/Reader, Halo) - 4 words

“Choices” Emile’s chapter (Noble Team/Reader choose your own Spartan adventure, Halo: Reach) - 129 words

“Itch” new one-shot, not a WIP (John/Cortana, Halo) - 3 words

Still in the running but nothing in the last day or two: “Recreation” ch3 (Kai/male Reader, Halo), “Guardian Angel” ch3 (Eobard/Time Wraith!Caitlin, The Flash) and never-ending editing/rewriting/weeping and wailing 😱😉 for “Cupid’s Kiss” ch3 (Eobard/Caitlin, The Flash).

Frens, I’ve been thisclose to admitting defeat, to throwing my hands metaphorically in the air and declaring that I’m never going to write again. I probably would have if not for the fact that I honestly love each of these fics and characters and there’s at least some spark of them all still alive in me. I want to read what happens next, too. I want them to get to have as decent an ending as possible.

Setting small, almost literally “please just write one single word” goals has kept me from giving up all together. I wasn’t even going to mention this because, come on, is writing 4 words really something to tell people about like you’re proud of it? In this case, yes. You have no idea how hard it was to write those 4 words because my brain is screaming at me to give up. That whatever I write will be so bad, so awful, it would be less embarrassing to just never finish these WIPs and never write that new one-shot. I just... let it scream and wrote around the noise as best I could. 4 words but I had to fight for each one. I didn’t give up. I won’t give up. It’s like my car is on fire and all of the wheels are about to fall off but I still want to finish the race.

Small goals. I’ll post another update when I have one. Wish me luck pushing this shrieking fireball on down the track a little more. 🤞😣🤞
