I once read that there are two kinds of time: mechanical and human. You could say my story began at 8:59 the day I started that job, and ended months later, when I left it. But I'd tell you it began in the past, with my old self; and ended in the future, the new one.

Mr and Mrs Smith episode 8 thoughts
I love the way that Mr and Mrs Smith evolved almost as a fucked up spy soulmate au. I mean, you're assigned a spouse based on this higher power and despite everything you can't help fall in love with them . Something so tragic about John and Jane's final conversation with the other Smiths, where they describe Hihi like a god, stating that Hihi predicts their every move. The horror of loving by someone else's design, and worse the horror of being doomed in love, knowing the thing that designed your love has thwarted every attempt for it to grow and then decided they've had enough of it. Loving despite that,

Mr. & Mrs. Smith S01

Mr. & Mrs. Smith S01    [trailer]
Two strangers land jobs with a spy agency that offers them a life of espionage, wealth, and travel. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage.
An interesting concept to mix an action series with a relationship drama. At least in theory.
There were a number of moments when the two clicked together. But overall I found it difficult to switch between more serious conversations and the still unrealistic mission action scenes, like when for example they create mayhem at the ski resort or at an Italian lake. It has no consequences.
The guest stars provide some welcome liveliness, but e.g. the psychoanalyst episode still was a bit boring.

Film after film: Columbus (dir. Kogonada, 2017)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's beautiful melancholy in how Kogonada frames both buildings and people in his great feature directorial debut. It's a perfect slow film, with beautifully emotive roles by Richardson and Cho, as well as a supporting take by Posey, who's recently become my most eagerly awaited performer wherever she appears. While she usually excels at providing line readings that no one else could do more interestingly (The Staircase, Beau Is Afraid), here she operates on a quieter level, which is still a bolt of massive energy.

watched the first 4 episodes of the new mr and mrs smith show and i have so many thoughts. first is that the title is VERY misleading i guess they wanted to cash in the 2004 movie (obvious) but it's really nothing like. i mean, the main couple is married and they are spies, but there's nothing of the undercover shit or the 2000s sweaty sexiness. which is not a bad thing! but the show is not like this at all. it's more of an exploration of this middle class married life where people enter a relationship without knowing each other maybe due to technology? maybe? the evil boss only contacts them thru chat and their married cover is that they are web developers or something while actually doing things like destabilizing vaguely central american countries.
anyway i liked the show bc it's about learning to live with another and opening up and bc of (crucially) maya erskine who was my first draw for this show. i think donald glover's character is too cool tho, the curse of creating your own character i guess so i don't think he meshes well with maya's natural charm. paul dano tho......he appears as the "hot neighbor" and because i low key find him hot he should've been the john in the john and jane smith marriage bc he has hot chemistry with maya.

We now have this movie on DVD. Plus, my dad was able to find the soundtrack at a record store. I think it was just extreme luck, since the film turned 20 last year (that's probably why we could find the soundtrack). But it's a great movie. And a great soundtrack! Just listen:

PARKER CULLEN (KEIYNAN LONSDALE) is looking for THEIR EX FROM NEW YORK. they’d like the faceclaim to possibly be someone along the lines of LAITH ASHLEY, TYLER POSEY, JOHN BOYEGA, OLIVER STARK, MICHAEL B JORDAN, ANY FC 29-35ISH, but you must reach out to DADIISM to find out more! ( parker lived in new york from the age of 18 to about a year or so ago when they returned to denver to take care of their mother, so they could’ve met and dated for a good chunk of time. I would like to have them been together for at least a year, but I’m definitely open to longer! some time after parker moved back to denver, the two made the mutual decision to break up due to distance and the fact that parker was going to be staying in denver longer than originally planned. whether there's still feelings there and why wc is in denver now can be utp, I'd love to hear ideas!)

So tedious
...Plays which are writ in verse are so tedious: for though, most commonly, the sense is to be confined to the Couplet, yet nothing that does perpetuo tenore fluere, run in the same channel, can please always. ’Tis like the murmuring of a stream, which not varying in the fall, causes at first attention, at last drowsiness. Variety of cadences is the best rule, the greatest help to the Actors, and refreshment to the Audience.
Dryden, An Essay of Dramatic Posey
