Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
Tumblr media
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.
Tumblr media
Tom Trbojevic (Getty)While serious injury concerns were put to bed, the Sea Eagles took no chance, resting their talisman who is set to make an emphatic return against the Bulldogs this week.Meanwhile, star teammate Moses Suli has been dropped from Des Hasler's squad despite putting up a stellar man of the match performance last week. Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.

THE ROBO SHOW MECHS & MOBILE SUITS Opening February 12th 7-10pm Reception at Light Grey Art Lab "Black smoke belches from the exhaust pipes beneath greasy armored plates. Steam courses through the cylinders and the 22 pistons jerk frantically back and forth, propelling your huge mass forward down the damp cobblestone streets. Frightened eyes peek from behind sooty curtains -- the unmistakable clanging of steel can be heard from a mile away in the still night.  . ." Join us for the opening reception of the ROBO SHOW, February 12th from 7-10pm. This upcoming exhibition calls 70 artists to create original designs, mech allies, mobile suits, prosthetics, flying machines, bionics, war ships, and vessels - the ROBO SHOW celebrates real and imagined technology, and the mad genius behind the machines we would love to pilot. The contributing artists have taken on the role of illustrative engineers. The work featured may be inspired by a range --WWI machinery, science fiction vehicles, fantastical objects, space crafts, and artillery - these mobile suits belong in distant lands, futuristic planets, and foregone cities. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on display through the end of March, and limited edition prints available on the Light Grey Shop throughout the show. Dick Foran: Straddled More Than One Horse
Dick Foran: Straddled More Than One Horse
Tumblr media
We’ve had cause to mention Dick Foran(John Nicholas Foran, 1910-79) a few times on Travalanche. It’s hard to drop a lasso around this actor — he’s most commonly characterized as a B movie western singing cowboy, but in truth he figures in all genres: westerns, musicals, horror, comedies, noir, war films et al, and he managed to escape the B movie grind to appear in mainstream features on…

Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court moves to the Senate floor; the Interpol president goes missing after a trip to native China.

Brett Kavanaugh is one step closer to being confirmed to America’s highest court after the Senate narrowly passed a motion to move his confirmation vote forward Friday. [Washington Post / Seung Min Kim and John Wagner]
And Kavanaugh appears to have the votes; three senators who previously appeared undecided announced they’ll vote to confirm the nominee. These were Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat, and Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Jeff Flake. [CNN / Stephen Collinson and Clare Foran]
Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski, who opposed the cloture vote, has yet to publicly announce which way she’ll swing, though many indigenous communities from her state have formally come out against the candidate’s nomination. [Vox / Umair Irfan]
With the votes of Collins, Flake, and Manchin’s secured, however, it is near certain Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the Supreme Court. The senators are expected to join the rest of the Republican Party (excluding Murkowski) for a 51-vote majority. [Wall Street Journal / Natalie Andrews and Kristina Peterson]
If confirmed, Kavanaugh will become the second Trump-appointed member of the Supreme Court, following Neil Gorsuch’s 54-45 confirmation vote last year. [New York Times / Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Nicholas Fandos]
Kavanaugh’s presence on the Supreme Court bench would swing the balance of the court decisively toward conservatives — a shift that could transform America as we know it. [Vox / Dylan Matthews]
The judge seems all but certain to be confirmed despite Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her when they were both in high school, which he has denied. Kavanaugh’s confirmation, almost exactly a year after exposés on Harvey Weinstein made the #MeToo movement take off, will represent the apex of the #MeToo backlash. [Vox / Zack Beauchamp]
That backlash was embodied not just by Trump’s mocking of Ford but by Collins’s speech explaining her vote, in which she cited the presumption of innocence as paramount. [NYT]

Meng Hongwei’s wife alerted the police in Lyon, France, where the international police organization has its headquarters, after she lost contact with her husband in late September. The authorities in both nations are investigating. [NPR / Bill Chappell]
Chinese media reports that Meng was allegedly “taken away” by authorities “as soon as he landed in China,” though there remain questions about both the nature of the investigation and Meng’s whereabouts. [South China Morning Post / Laurie Chen and Catherine Wong]
Meng also serves as China’s deputy minister of public security. He held an interest in cybercrime, while he’s dealt with several instances of narcotics control and counter-terrorism during his 40-year tenure in the criminal justice system. [Bloomberg / Gaspard Sebag]

Doorstops may come in many forms of heavy, mundane objects, but a man in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was unknowingly using a meteorite valued at $100,000 for years before a geology professor noticed it and sent two slices to the Smithsonian for examination. [Detroit Free Press / Fiona Kelliher]
Mumford & Sons announced their biggest world tour to date, kicking off with a concert in Ireland on the same day they release their upcoming LP. [Rolling Stone / Althea Legaspi]
“He was leaning up against where you put the bags overhead and a passenger came by and said, ‘What are you going to do, some pull ups?’ and the guy actually grabbed onto it and started doing some pull ups on the plane in front of everybody.” [An unruly — and possibly intoxicated — passenger forced an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to Boston to make a quick stop at Kansas City for law enforcement to arrive and take him off the jet / CBS]
