OH MY GOD.
IT'S CHRISTOPH KONCZ PLAYING THE RED VIOLIN CAPRICES.
WE'VE COME FULL CIRCLE
youtube
They dubbed over him playing Kaspar's Etude in the movie so it feels like closure to hear him finally actually play it.
His approach is quite different from most other violinists I've heard, who still tend to take their cues from Joshua Bell's original interpretation.
Another one who refuses to play Coitus Musicalis, tho. Sigh. Look, I know. I remember everybody's reaction to that scene when the movie came out. But, like, I really do feel like you end up missing something when you're playing the whole set if you leave out that adagio section. Variations 2 and 4 don't flow into each other.

The Red Violin
The Red Violin (French: Le Violon Rouge) is a 1998 drama film directed by François Girard and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Carlo Cecchi and Sylvia Chang. It spans four centuries and five countries telling the story of a mysterious red-coloured violin and its many owners. The instrument, made in Cremona in 1681 with a future forecast by tarot cards, makes its way to Montreal in 1997, where an appraiser identifies it and it goes to auction. The film was an international co-production among companies in Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
The screenplay, inspired by a historic 1720 Stradivarius violin nicknamed the "Red Mendelssohn", was written by Don McKellar and Girard. The film was shot in Austria, Canada, China, England and Italy. It features a soundtrack by John Corigliano, with solos performed by violinist Joshua Bell.

Dr. Kevin Sedatole conducts Michigan State University Wind Symphony in performance of John Corigliano's "surround sound" masterpiece - Circus Maximus, Symphony No 3. The concert entitled "An Evening With John Corigliano" took place in April 2010 at the Great Hall of the Wharton Center on campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing.
It is impossible to convey an incredible experience that this piece is - wind symphony, 11 trumpets placed around the audience, two French horns on the back of the hall, saxophone quartet and clarinet on the balcony, let alone a small marching band parading around the hall and across the stage, plus a stunning finale with firing of a shotgun!
The piece is performed without breaks, we are happy to bring it to you in its entirety without interruption. In order to jump to a particular movement, please follow the links below I.
Introitus 0:14 II.
Screen/Siren 3:44 III.

V. Night Music II 19:46
VI. Circus Maximus 23:10
VII. Prayer 27:43 VIII.

I'd have guessed this was a Peter Schickele production, nice.
I'm gonna have to put this on

Submitter's Comments:
Corigliano 1
IT'S SO GOOD IT MAKES ME SCREAM AND CRY AND THROW UP AND EAT DRYWALL but more seriously Corigliano uses atonality, extended techniques, and a variety of other modern strategies to convey the sheer anguish and rage that characterized the early period of the AIDS crisis within the traditional symphonic structure and also it has a lot of really excellent brass parts which is my baseline for if a symphony is really really good. Not very well known but it should be you should listen to it right now I am trapping everyone in the world in my little tiny room so that they can listen to this piece

William Hurt in Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980)
Cast: William Hurt, Blair Brown, Bob Balaban, Charles Haid, Thaao Penghlis, Miguel Godreau, Dori Brenner, Peter Brandon, Charles White-Eagle, Drew Barrymore, Megan Jeffers. Screenplay: Paddy Chayefsky, based on his novel. Cinematography: Jordan Cronenweth. Production design: Richard Macdonald. Film editing: Eric Jenkins. Music: John Corigliano.
In theory, choosing Ken Russell to direct Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay based on his novel, an updating of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to the psychedelic era, had some potential. Russell is known for his flamboyant visuals and Chayefsky for his talky screenplays like the Oscar-winning Marty (Delbert Mann, 1955), The Hospital (Arthur Hiller, 1971), and Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976). Perhaps the visuals would moderate the verbosity, or vice versa. Unfortunately, Altered States wound up something of a mess -- a watchable mess, but still not a satisfying film. Chayefsky was so upset with the movie he took his name off the credits and substituted a pseudonym, Sidney Aaron. But the problem is inherent in the premise: that a potion can alter not only the mental state of the person who takes it but also the physical state -- that matter itself, the human body, can be changed by drinking a mixture of blood and hallucinogenic mushrooms. It's the stuff of fairy tales, not science. So when Dr. Jessup (William Hurt in his film debut), a respected physician researching the causes of schizophrenia, drinks the concoction, he reverts to his primordial self: a small, aggressive carnivorous simian. Good enough for a horror-movie setup, but not quite what Chayefsky had in mind when he wrote lines like these: "It is the Self, the individual mind, that contains immortality and ultimate truth....  Ever since we dispensed with God we've got nothing but ourselves to explain this meaningless horror of life." Chayefsky's existential conundrums go missing in a welter of special effects. And ultimately, the film collapses in bathos, with a plot resolution in which love conquers all after Jessup's experiments go calamitously awry. Hurt and Blair Brown as Jessup's wife do what they can with the material, giving controlled performances, but Russell, that connoisseur of excess, lets Charles Haid overplay his role as Dr. Parrish, the supposed skeptic about Jessup's research who seems like a nutcase himself.

Kings will be tyrants by policy when subjects are rebels from principle.
- Edmund Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France
John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles was first commissioned by the Met in 1980 but then put on in 2019. The new production was directed by Jay Lessenger to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Opera of Versailles in Versailles.
In this historical journey, with hints of Mozart and Rossini are the French nobility who are trapped in limbo, as the victims of the French Revolution. They are still traumatised by their executions on Earth and await their ultimate fate with apprehension. To come to the aid of the unfortunate souls, the playwright Beaumarchais enlists his most famous creations to re-stage the revolution and offer a happier ending.

This is Mannheim, so that must be its rocket.
Edited to add: I've just listened to John Corigliano's The Mannheim Rocket, and it's great fun: especially the moment when the Wagner retro-rockets fail to arrest the fall back to earth.

One of the things I missed during my Dirt Nap Era was a bunch of stuff Philippe Quint did, including this:
youtube
I want to shout out the fact that he actually does play the Coitus Musicalis variation, which not everyone does because, y'know. LOL.
He's got a much more old-school flavor than Joshua, but there's significant overlap in their sensibilities (they've also played together), so it's neat to hear where and how they differ in performing this music.
