NIGHTWISH's TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN Doesn't Rule Out Second Solo Album

In a new interview with Finland's Tuonela magazine, Tuomas Holopainen — the keyboardist and main songwriter of NIGHTWISH — was asked if there is a chance of a follow-up to his solo album based on a graphic novel called "The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck", written and illustrated by Don Rosa. "Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge - Written And Produced By Tuomas Holopainen" came out in April 2014 via Nuclear Blast.

Tuomas said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "It's not that long ago that I had this idea — it's kind of a musical idea — that I got really excited about. And I was thinking we can't do this with AURI and we can't really do this with NIGHTWISH either. So maybe another solo project kind of thing at some point in the future. I don't know. It's so early still, but maybe.

"After I finished doing 'Scrooge' 10 years ago, I thought this was a one-timer," he continued. "'Never again. Don't really need [to do another one]. But if there comes an idea that doesn't fit AURI or NIGHTWISH, maybe I have to go solo again. And both bands are musically so varied that you can do almost anything with those two labels. But if the theme would be something that the other bandmembers can't really relate to, then I might have to turn to the option of going solo. That's what happened with 'Scrooge'. I mean, the NIGHTWISH members don't have such an intimate relationship with a duck as I do. [Laughs] So that's why I had to go solo."

Regarding the possibility of him performing material from "The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck" live at some point, Tuomas said: "Um, I don't know. It would be an interesting experience. I know that album has a bit of a cult status already and that it would be a success. But at the moment, I'm not really feeling it. But I've learned never to say never. So let's see.

"I've been asked to do the whole album a few times, actually, even on main stage of a rock and roll festival on Saturday night," he added. "I don't think it would have worked, but we have to wait and see."

"Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge - Written And Produced By Tuomas Holopainen" contained 10 songs, with total duration of approximately 60 minutes. The music was said to be in the soundtrack / classical / folk genre in the vein of Vaughan Williams, Michael Nyman, James Newton Howard and Enya.

Pip Williams did the orchestral arrangements for the "Life And Times Of Scrooge" disc, continuing his collaboration with Tuomas after the NIGHTWISH records "Once", "Dark Passion Play" and "Imaginaerum".

There were a number of guest musicians appearing on "Life And Times Of Scrooge", including the London Orchestra, The Metro Voices (a choir from London) and four lead vocalists: Alan Reid, Johanna Kurkela, Johanna Iivanainen and Tony Kakko. Other guest appearances included Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes, low whistles, bodhran),Mikko Iivanainen (guitars and banjo),Teho Majamäki (didgeridoo),Jon Burr (harmonica) and Dermot Crehan on the solo violin. The recordings took place during August - October 2013, first at Angel Studios in London, then in various locations around Scotland and Finland.

NIGHTWISH's new album, "Yesterwynde", is due on September 20, 2024 via Nuclear Blast. It marks the band's tenth studio LP, following on from the release of "Human. :II: Nature." in 2020.

5 songs for Jitah’li

...and some overbearing commentary, for the character development's sake. Let's go!

1. Soittajapaimen - Finnish Folk song (singer Johanna Iivanainen) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIBSpKe4GfU - I listened bunch of songs while reshaping Jitah'li couple of months ago for his new life of better and more active rp character. This was one of them, for obvious reasons, believe it or not. Tip: the song is about herdsman crafting willow pipe and playing the thing in early evening. Not only Jitah’li’s stag mount grew into stand in for Bki, his semi-domesticated sort of antelope companion (criminally underused in the thread so far, but the two have remained separated in narrative, maybe that will change) but that idea expanded his whole clan being antelope herders as long as hunters (super exact detils still in making). Additionally we figured out with Gemi (@ceduli) that Jitah'li probably is owner of fairly pleasant singing voice, despite being more archer than bard proper in in-game technical sense, and that he also knows how to craft and play willow pipe, and probably play panpipes too.

2. Everlasting - Two Steps From Hell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsWhKoo_6y0 - Music makes you braver. What more can I say, it probably took Jitah'li a little courage to join the White Wolves of the Twin Adder's. I glamour my boy in Serpent Elite's garb though he is not there quieete yet :D

3. Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGJTaP6anOU - This is for Cedu'li. My boy did not waste many weeks to become thorough enamored with his new friend and former savior. They are cute as pair of buttons together, but they also have these delightfully mature concept of mutual support and trust down already.

4. The Journey to the West - Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite - Like the first song this is one of those tracks I listened when I defined Jitah'li little while back. Boy, his bow and his deer-like companion? Check and check. Also, if the adventure will call Jitah'li and Cedu'li together it probably will be from the west.

5. Muumin Tani Fuyu - Tanoshii Moomin Ikka OST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NU_0OH9xzo&t=55s - On the other hand, leaving the home and familiar behind, while it might be anticipated occasion like spring after long winter, it can also turn out to be little bittersweet event as well.

"Johanna Kurkela is the voice of "Glittering" Goldie o'Gilt, Johanna Ilvanainen is a narrator and the voice of Scrooges mother. Troy found Alan Reid, who is perfect for Scrooges voice because he can also sing. The music video will be some sort of "making of" style with scenes from the studio times and how Don Rosa is drawing the cover."

Henrik Otto Donner & TUMO - And It Happened...

Mieleen nousee taas levytysten ja äänitysten paradoksaalinen asema jazz-musiikissa. Luonnostaan improvisaation kautta hetkessä elävä ja alati kehittyvä musiikki tulee useimmille kuulijoille ja jää jälkipolville elämään jähmettyneenä äänitteenä - yksi improvisoitu soolo monien joukosta muodostuu kanoniseksi. "Näin tää biisi menee oikeesti". 

Toisaalta kuitenkin muuttumaton äänitekin on silti elossa. Uskon siihen, että jazzin kuuntelussa ja arvioinnissa tulisi suorittaa jatkuvaa uudelleenarviointia. Muiden kuultujen levyjen myötä tutustakin levystä saattaa löytyä aivan uusia puolia ja joku levy joka ei aikoinaan auennut saattaa yhtäkkiä avautua syystä tai toisesta. 

Henrik Otto Donnerin ansiot suomalaisessa musiikkielämässä ovat niin laajat, että historiankirjoissa nimi varmasti muistettaisiin ilman levytyksiäkin, mutta Donnerin omaa nimeä kantavat levyt jäivät kovasti vähälukuisiksi verrattuna muihin ansioihin, joten nyt noin neljä kuukautta Donnerin kuoleman jälkeen ilmestynyt And It Happened... tulee tarpeeseen.

Tuntuu hyvin vaikealta, jos ei peräti mahdottomalta, kuulla And It Happenediä nyt muuten kuin Donnerin musikaalisen elämäntarinan codana tai kunnianosoituksena vaikka lokakuussa 2012 äänitetty levy ilmestyykin alkuperäisen julkaisuaikataulun mukaisesti. Jätettäköön siis sisällön objektiivinen arviointi ja levyn asettaminen lopulliselle paikalleen Donnerin tuotannossa tuleville vuosille jatkuvan uudelleenarvioinnin hengessä. 

And It Happened... on TUMOn (Todella Uuden Musiikin Orkesteri) toinen levytys. Wadada Leo Smithin johtamaan Occupy The Worldiin verrattuna TUMO on entistäkin isompi big band 33 henkisenä, erityisesti jousisektiota on laajennettu. Solisteina toimivat puhaltimissa Donnerin luotettu yhteistyökumppani vuosikymmenten ajalta, Juhani Aaltonen ja viimeiseksi luottovokalistiksi noussut Johanna Iivanainen.

Levyn materiaali kattaa Donnerin pitkän uran. Mukana on sävellyksiä 60-luvun alusta vuoteen 2007. Jotenkin keskeiseksi nousee levyn alkupuolelta kolmen Johanna Iivanaisen laulaman lyhyen runolliseen tekstiin sävelletyn laulun sarja Close Your Eyes, Entreaty  ja The First Summer. Sävellykset on tehty eri tarkoituksiin kolmena eri vuosikymmenä, mutta nyt ne soivat kauniisti yhtenäisen tuntuisena suitena. Tuntuu siltä, että jotain oleellista Donnerista on tavoitettu. Iivanaisen laulussa on paitsi herkkyyttä niin myös itsevarmuutta, jotenkin jo ensi kuuntelulla nousi mieleen Iivanaisen laulua kuullessa, että nyt on kyseessä aivan poikkeuksellisen onnistunut englanninkielinen suoritus.

Donnerin sävellykset antavat Juhani Aaltosen saksofonille paljon tilaa. Kaikuja muista Donnerin ja Aaltosen projekteista, erityisesti Strings ja Strings Revisited tulevat voimakkaasti mieleen. Jää ajan näytettäväksi tuleeko tästä levystä Stringsin kaltaista klassikkoa, mutta vertailun se kestää oivasti ja Aaltosen kokemus kuuluu nyt seikkailullisempana soittona.

Iso orkesteri soi yllättävänkin herkästi ja levy kuulostaa kaiken kaikkiaan todella hienolta. Bändi saa lopuksi soittaa yhden biisin ilman solisteja. For Friends and Relatives oli aikoinaan Donnerin ensimmäisen levytyksen viimeinen biisi, nyt se on sitä myös tällä viimeisellä.

Kaiken kaikkiaan hieno ja tyylikäs virstanpylväsjulkaisu joka ansaitsee paikkansa jokaisen suomalaisen jazzin ystävän levyhyllyssä.

Levyä myyvät periaatteelisella tasolla Digelius ja Levykauppa Äx, mutta tätä kirjoittaessa kummallakaan ei ole sitä hyllyssä. Eipä ihme.
