What about the economy of the shinkansen from the railway business viewpoint, namely, the relationship between the income and expenses per unit transport volume? As explained above, the income per unit transport volume (fare including express charges) of the shinkansen is large. And additional income from related enterprises can also be expected. As far as the expenses are concerned, they consist of various factors. Although some increase with speed increase, there are other factors that do not significantly increase with transport volume (for example, construction cost of bridges or tunnels). In this context, the unit cost of very high-speed railways can be expected to be less than that of conventional line thanks to the large traffic volume induced by high-speed service. Therefore, for lines with high demand, the shinkansen is more profitable than conventional inter-city railways.
[...]
When the Japanese National Railways (JNR) was divided and privatised in March 1987, the shinkansen operated on four sections (Tokaido, Sanyo, Tohoku and Joetsu), and the total service length was 1835 km. The shinkansen network had run well even in the JNR era. At the division and privatisation, the government, considering the high profitability, leased the shinkansen facilities at the replacement price (¥ 8.5 trillion) or 1.5 times the book value (¥ 5.7 trillion) to the passenger railway companies. The difference (¥ 2.8 trillion) helped reduce the huge long-term debt left by JNR. Because the shinkansen business results continued to be favorable after the privatisation, the JRs decided to purchase the shinkansen facilities for a total ¥ 9.2 trillion or approximately ¥ 700 billion more than the appraised value at the JNR division and privatisation. The difference was appropriated as part of the Railway Reinforcement Funds for constructing new shinkansen lines, increasing the speed of conventional lines, and reinforcing the commuter transport capacity. The Tokaido Shinkansen is only 25% of the total service kilometers of JR Central but dominates the total income (85%). Thus, the Tokaido Shinkansen is the backbone of JR Central.

JR East to Introduce Driverless Shinkansen Trains by 2030: A Revolution in Japan’s Transportation
Tumblr media
The Japanese railway company JR East plans to introduce driverless trains on the Joetsu Shinkansen line by 2030, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Tumblr media
Photo: ajupress.com This move will mark a significant milestone in the development of autonomous driving technologies on high-speed railways. Network Rail to Extend the Life of a Historic Viaduct by 180 Years: Major Repairs on the London-Brighton Line A 55-kilometer section between Nagaoka and Niigata stations has been selected as the testing ground. By 2029, trains on this section will begin operating without a driver, but under driver supervision, and later they will run fully autonomously. The primary goal of implementing such technologies is to improve train safety, reduce human error, and offer more flexible scheduling. Additionally, automation will help address the growing shortage of train drivers, a pressing issue in recent years. This technology promises to significantly reduce operational risks and enhance traffic management efficiency. The project aims not only to improve logistics within Japan but also to create a model for applying similar solutions on other high-speed train lines. After the successful trials on the Joetsu Shinkansen, JR East plans to expand autonomous operations to other routes, which could mark a major step forward in the global railway industry. The first mention of JR East’s plans to automate its trains surfaced in 2020. By 2021, testing had begun with a 12-car E7 series train featuring the highest automation level, GoA4. This train operates fully autonomously, with a driver present only to observe the process from the front carriage without any direct involvement. Testing is currently being conducted on a specially designated 5-kilometer section in Niigata Prefecture. Driverless trains represent not only a technical breakthrough but also a social one. The development of such technologies opens up new possibilities for railway transportation, making it safer, more convenient, and faster. Joetsu-Myoko Station is likely to be the first place you see when you arrive in town. Opened exactly 4 years ago on March 14, 2015, it is a big change to the transportation infrastructure. Now we are a mere 2 hours from Tokyo, and Osaka and the Kansai region is closer than ever. Son Yuto had a chance to ride the Shinkansen bullet train to Osaka earlier this week on the 8th grade school trip. On the day I visited, the sky was clear, the station uncrowded and friendly, and there were even some high school rockers offering live entertainment. Welcome to Joetsu! #visitjoetsu #joetsu #joetsumyoko #shinkansen #highschoolrock #welcome #welcomehome (at 北陸新幹線 上越妙高駅) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvBEllAjvmT/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zcz7m6t8oo93

2019 2.5D Actors ranking
I decided to do two rankings of my top 50 2.5D actors. One in terms of acting skill and level, and one in terms of how much I like them.
RULES:
1. I must have seen them in at least one 2.5D production and at least 2 different stage shows. And liked them in at least two different roles for their acting level
2. They must still be active in 2.5D shows.
3. I have not taken how much I like the actor into account. I am not a fan of all of these actors. I simply think they have exceptional acting ability.

Day 22 (2) - Toyama to Takaoka with a long detour to the Joetsu region in Niigata Prefecture
Slightly disappointed by the lack of birds on the Asahi Lagoon, I decided to cycle back to Joetsu. Forever in search of new landscapes, I turned inland rather than return to the coastal route. in addition, I avoided the busier country roads by following agricultural lanes with no signposts. This was not my most inspired move as all I found ahead of me was a vast plain punctuated by small dams. At one of these, at least, I found a lonely pair of Red-breasted Mergansers.
My phone battery was almost flat, and I quickly found myself a little disoriented and with no village in sight. The rising wind and lowering temperatures encouraged me to pedal faster, and I was eventually able to find a main highway, the 253, which took me straight back to Naoetsu station from where I had started cycling in the morning.
it was late when I reached Joetsumyoko station, and there were less Shinkansen trains to hop on for Takaoka. Tired and famished, I had a comforting noodle dinner at the station café. I didn’t expect to see tourists around this time of the day, but many arrived, all dressed warmly, and perhaps coming from Myoko-Kogen ski resort. To kill time, I also enjoyed looking at all the traditional craft on display at the station.
Despite arriving slightly late in Takaoka, Hotel Route-Inn offered me again a warm welcome and a spacious room for 3 nights.
