When my ears are no longer don’t forget their shape. How your fingers sang their curves, read their familiar bends like braille your hands accepting our future in silence.
Listen if I forget myself, you; the words that my ears remember.

Joel Salcido: On Hatching a Mythical Beast
ON HATCHING A MYTHICAL BEAST
January 29, 1986
Me rajaste she whispered to her son—
there were no sutures to mend what cracked
her shell, inside, beneath the belly.
She was prescribed a wheelchair
to hold together her bruised hips,
told to limit her carcajadas or risk spilling.
The skin of her belly striped raw
as if a jaguar had tried to claw
its way in from the outside.
With her fingers she licked
the thick black hair that feathered
his head, the way her mother had.
Stroked his back, felt the bony
shoulders of his father unaware
they were the beginnings of wings.
//AFTER CHALLENGER//
The boy was born of a bomb.
His moment of light,
the glowing wake of a misfire—
his first breath stolen
from the space of a collective gasp.
He emerged from a blast—
a mouth of smoke
snaking through the sky,
stitched his consciousness
from sections orbiting the air,
the debris of an explosion
falling in a soft blaze.
//
She chose to name him
after her brother,
after a prophet.
Her brother who died
in a heap of crooked steel,
flown until he struck dirt
like a fletching.
Whose sparrow eyes
flashed to dark,
light snuffed by the dust.
Whose crow was cut short
choked in a wail of tires
& she wailed too—
raucous, her voice
full of murder.
//
Quietly the newborn nested
on her chest,
frail as a hummingbird.
A Body Can be Haunted too
Inside your abdomen
there is an echoing.
A place where something cut-away
bit and clawed the walls of its exit wound,
exhaled an invisible balloon
bursting with burning air,
left its teeth.
The gall of it,
bile little thing,
to unwind like a screw
washing its own threads.
Nothing can fit its empty,
tighten shut this gaping.
Doesn’t the cup ache for what once filled it?
How long can a groan sing after it’s departed the body?
Why does pain pulse then haunt, then murmur like a memory?
I see the slits of your incisions,
two unblinking eyelids,
the rough crescents cut and stare.
I often wonder
about the smallness of pain,
how I might clutch its smallness
around my fingers.
But as with so many things of such small size
it shrinks but can’t disappear it’s hard to hold,
impossible to keep track of won’t be crushed.
Joel Salcido was born in the San Fernando Valley and raised in West Phoenix. He is the son of Mexican immigrants, a first-generation college graduate, a husband, and father of three sons. Joel characterizes his work as hood magical realism—a navigation between the grief and ecstasy of place and experience. His poetry and prose are not simply written to or about his culture and community—but from it. His work has been featured in Write On, Downtown, Public Pool, The Decolonizer, and Four Chambers Press among others. He is the recipient of a University Graduate Fellowship from Arizona State University and a Virginia G. Piper Creative Research Fellowship. Joel is the Editor-in-Chief of Hayden’s Ferry Review and an MFA candidate in poetry at Arizona State University.

You Will Identify My Body By Ear by Joel Salcido
“Trace the rim of your ear: Feel those curves & ridges? You’re the only person in the world with that exact shape.” Reader’s Digest
Remember this if my body washes up on the beach, spit from the sea of Cortez. My thin frame pregnant w/ water, seaweed like filigree braided into my hair, crabs in procession crawling out the caves of my nostrils.
Listen, if the casket is open. After my lobe is pierced by a service weapon, my head a ruined mouth w/ ears, my soft-from-poem hands, folded on my lap still listening.
Don’t forget my ears if my heart pills to concrete. Know they heard me drifting down to dark, but were too quiet to keep me awake. I heard you cursing me, telling me you loved me, in the same breath. Know they noted my last words— Don’t tell the kids.
If your final memory of me is the sound of bullets, if your last vision is the bottoms of my shoes running to fire back, if my closing breath is a poem in your ear explaining how to shoot a gun— remember them.
If my hair falls out like cut rope— grasp at what’s left of me folded like a fetus. When my ears are no longer don’t forget their shape. How your fingers sang their curves, read their familiar bends like braille your hands accepting our future in silence.
Listen if I forget myself, you; the words that my ears remember.

Ancient Roman Sculpture Likely Looted During WWII Turns Up at Texas Goodwill | Smart News
Antiques dealer Laura Young purchased the bust at Goodwill for $34.99. Joel Salcido / San Antonio Museum of Art An antiques seller for about a decade, Laura Young knows what it means to sift through piles of objects in the hopes of finding one unique item. But an August 2018 trip to a Texas thrift store exceeded her expectations on almost every level. When Young first noticed a marble bust under…

Taco Tuesday Problems: So Many Tacos, So Little Time
If there’s one cuisine we could never live without, it’s Mexican. A strong statement, we realize, but tacos are a perfect food, and so we celebrate Taco Tuesday extra-hard. You have two options: Peruse the rankings of our favorite tacos and be inspired, or scroll through our favorite taco recipes of all time and take it from there.
Recipe: Tacos Al Pastor On The Grill
Tacos al pastor translates to “tacos in the style of the shepherd.” The spit-roasted pork found its way to Mexico via Lebanese immigrants and their shawarma. To that end, real al pastor is made on a giant vertical spit the same way that lamb on your doner kebab or gyro is cooked.
Recipe: Spicy Roasted Cauliflower Tacos
Make the chipotle sauce with sun “cheese” and skip the honey to make this vegan.
Shield your eyes before you look at Empellòn chef Alex Stupak’s uni-on-uni taco, for it is totally glorious.
Recipe: Empellón-Grade Sea Urchin Guacamole Tacos
This taco was born out of a shared opinion among my cooks and friends that a tortilla is as worthy of precious ingredients as any piece of Raynaud china. When I thought about making a sea urchin taco, I knew that working it into guacamole would magnify the briny sweetness the spiky creature is known for — the fat in an avocado can help stretch and carry flavors just like a knob of butter.
Migas tacos: fuel for mornings in Austin. Here’s a recipe to get you going!
Recipe: Migas Tacos
Tacos filled with bacon and potatoes are popular, but we loved this one, which is twice as local, seeing as it’s inspired by another Tex-Mex dish: migas, a scramble of eggs, tortilla chips or strips, and toppings.
You’ve been craving pork belly tacos for longer than you’re willing to admit. Go for it!
Recipe: Fried Pork Belly Tacos With Pipián Sauce
I had never cooked pork belly myself when I asked Gonzalo to help me come up with a pork belly taco for the Copita menu. Rich and creamy with a crisp, crackling exterior, his creation blew me away. With a tomatillo-laced, nutty pipián sauce and pickled red onions on top, this taco can only be described as out of this world.
Recipe: Catfish Tacos With Charred Corn
Bailey Spaulding, brewmaster and cofounder of Jackalope Brewing Company, and her fiancé, chef Luke Williams, often cook together at home to make dishes like this one. Pair Williams’s recipe for tacos with Spaulding’s Jackalope Bearwalker, a maple brown ale.
No soggy bits allowed! (Photo: Helene Dujardin.)
Recipe: Fried Okra Tacos
A sprinkling of sugar in the cornmeal coating caramelizes as the okra cooks, creating a crisp, golden crust.
Beer-infused tacos to delight your vegetarian friends.
Recipe: Arrogant Bastard Ale Avocado Tacos
Vegetarian tacos are a great alternative to meat-laden variations, and all the fresh ingredients in this recipe really bring a pop of flavor. If frying is not your thing, the avocados can be served fresh. Accompany the tacos with black beans, Spanish-style rice, and an American strong ale like Arrogant Bastard Ale, which has a smack of hop bitterness.
Keep it light and meatless with these mushroom tacos.
Recipe: Grilled Portobello Mushroom Tacos
Mushroom tacos are perfect for the food lover who wants a good taco but doesn’t eat meat. Grilling the mushrooms over live mesquite will give you optimum flavor. The portobello should be grilled through but still have some bite to create different layers of texture. Carnivore or not, you will love this taco.
Paul Qui doesn’t mess around when it comes to breakfast tacos. (Photo: Joel Salcido and Dennis Burnett.)
Recipe: Paul Qui’s Breakfast Tacos
“The breakfast taco was a college staple for [us],” says Qui’s former marketing director Deana Saukam. “It’s cheap, fast and satisfying. Another favorite breakfast taco is anything from El Primo. Pete’s Tantalizing Tacos from Maudie’s are pretty delicious, too.”

Your March 2020 Horoscope Is Here (With Poetry Recs!)

March is a tricky month, considering it starts off still in the midst of Mercury Retrograde, which has been going strong this time. You might feel like you can’t say anything right, and that things keep going wrong or getting delayed - or just generally, your expectations are not being met.
Take a breath. It’ll be okay, but it’s time to reflect, be patient and humble. You can avoid arguments and unpleasant situations by choosing your words especially carefully. Emotions are running high, so be aware of that. Thankfully, on the 4th, Mercury enters Aquarius, so things should start to get a little smoother.
On the 5th, Venus enters Taurus, which gives us massive chill energy and vibes. With the rough retrograde, this is a good time to replenish yourself and your relationships. The full moon swoops in on the 9th in Virgo, which means it’s time to get in the groove with work. You are all about getting it done; on the flip side, this means you need to destress and cope with the work load. Don’t take it out on others.
Mercury Retrograde finally ends on the 10th, which paves the way for Aries season to start on the 20th. This is also, of course, the start of spring, which means beginnings are abound. With new beginnings comes endings, which can be bittersweet. Because retrograde just ended, you might feel like you culled a lot of people, situations, and habits out. This is a good thing, but it can feel a bit unsettling.
The month starts to wane down with the new moon in Aries on the 24th, making this an action time. What is it that you want? How can you get it? How can you move forward?
PISCES
Dream big. It’s a month for big ideas. Lay the groundwork and start that project or phase. It’s time.
Poetry rec: Orchid Tierney
ARIES
You are on fire this month. It feels like everyone wants you and every idea you have is gold. Just make sure not to be too blunt and careless with your words. Be careful of your ego.
Poetry rec: Max Kennedy
TAURUS
You are everywhere this month, when it comes to work and love. You are clearly a busy bee with little time to chill. Make sure to take some time to yourself regardless of your schedule, or you’ll be easily irritated and lash out.
Poetry rec: Sarah Jones
GEMINI
You’re feeling vulnerable this month. You’ve been opening yourself up more lately, which is a good thing, but because of this, you feel tender. Don’t shy away from this - and don’t compare yourself to others and their successes.
Poetry rec: Allison Armstrong
CANCER
You are in an amazing position at work and in your love life. Yes, two things can go right at the same time. Enjoy it.
Poetry rec: Faye Chevalier
LEO
While you feel stuck with your words lately, and don’t seem to be able to communicate the way you want, you’re also coming into your own. Don’t limit yourself.
Poetry rec: Kai Coggin
VIRGO
You’ve been dealing with a lot of personal issues lately, perhaps you’ve been dealing with a physical illness, perhaps depression and/or anxiety. That’s okay and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. However, it’s also on you to decide how to move forward with these situations.
Poetry rec: Mariah Rigg
LIBRA
Communication is good. Be honest with yourself and others about your needs. Pretending isn’t good for anyone.
Poetry rec: Janice Lee
SCORPIO
You feel especially anxious this month, thanks to the retrograde. In particular you’ve been feeling hard on yourself and down, and believe the people around you aren’t don’t reciprocate. This isn’t true, but you need to heal yourself.
Poetry rec: Karla Lamb
SAGITTARIUS
Don’t dwell on the past. You have so much going on for you right now, and your future. Focus on making these new beginnings full.
Poetry rec: Clara Burghelea
CAPRICORN
It seems like you may be up for a promotion or some good news with your career. Perhaps you’ve landed a new job or won a contest. Whatever it is, it’s well-deserved.
Poetry rec: Sarah Lyn Rogers
AQUARIUS
Your personal life is a little strained right now, largely because it seems like no one is talking with each other, but at each other. Be mindful.
Poetry rec: Joel Salcido
