Warnings: language, drinking, insinuations of cheating

Word Count: 1165

Summary: (Y/N) lets John have a piece of her mind when she sees him (against her wishes) for the first time in three weeks at a club.

“Don’t look now…” (Y/N)’s friend, Kara, began, making she sure had the woman she was addressing’s attention before continuing, “but that man has literally been eye-fucking you all night,” her grin grew as she finished her statement.

(Y/N)’s brows furrowed at her friend’s comment. Then she looked over her shoulder to see who she was talking about. The first thing that came to her mind when she located said man was fuck.

“What? Do you know him or something?” Kara asked upon seeing (Y/N)’s reaction to her observation.

“Yeah, I do,” (Y/N) answered with a sigh.

Kara looked over her friend’s shoulder to take another glimpse of the man before turning her attention back to the conversation. She bit on her bottom lip to conceal her grin as she debated whether or not saying what was on her mind would anger (Y/N) or not. After a few moments, she thought ‘the hell with it’. “He’s hot as fuck,” she commented, her grin in full view now.

“I beg to differ,” (Y/N) disagreed, sipping on her drink and hoping she didn’t look too disgusted.

“Well he’s been staring at you literally all night.”

“Yeah, that’s because he knows me too.”

“Care to share the details?” Kara’s eyebrows raised in intrigue.

“I’d much rather move to a different table,” (Y/N) responded, grabbing her drink in one hand and her clutch in the other before she stood from the table they were sitting at.

“(Y/N)! Wait!” Kara called, scoffing before she hurried to grab her things and catch up with her friend.

(Y/N) silently cursed the fact that the club was rather packed, which made it hard for her to find another open table. At this point, she’d much rather leave the place than go back to where she’d been sitting.

Her path was soon blocked though, and the second she looked up, she had to muster all of her restraint not to throw her drink in the man’s face.

“(Y/N)? I thought it was you,” the cocky shit that was John Shelby wasted no time in making conversation. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” he asked with a grin.

“It’s been three weeks, John. Get the fuck out of my way,” (Y/N) dismissed his pleasantries, hoping that he could tell by the glare she was wearing that she wanted no parts of talking to him.

But, of course, John didn’t catch onto it. Or maybe he did and decided to continue the conversation in spite of her. “Three weeks too long, darlin’,” he commented, his eyes raking over her figure, “I’ve missed you.”

“You found him, (Y/N)! I knew you’d taken off for a reason!” Kara chimed into the conversation before (Y/N) could respond with a snide remark.

“I didn’t find him, he blocked my path, Kara,” (Y/N) muttered to her friend, hoping that she’d catch onto her facial expression and help her out.

“You’re a friend?” John asked before Kara was able to get a good look at (Y/N)’s face, succeeding at pulling her attention to him.

“I am! Who might you be?” Kara asked, her grin growing by the second.

“Oh she didn’t tell me about you?” John’s eyebrows raised in surprise, “I was sure she would’ve.”

“No, she didn’t, and I’m rather confused as to why,” Kara responded, frowning at John before she sent (Y/N) a glare and elbowed her side. This set (Y/N) off even more. You’re supposed to be on my side!, she menatlly screamed at her friend.

“Why didn’t you tell her, love?” John now directed his surprised gaze at (Y/N).

“Because contrary to your belief, John, you’re really not someone I’d scream from the rooftops over,” she spat back, eyes shooting daggers at him.

“The noise complaints we got from my nieghbors beg to differ, baby,” he cracked back, his words dripping with smugness. I outgha just throw this fucking drink at you, (Y/N) thought as she stared him down. If looks could kill, he’d be flat on the floor by now.

“I bet they come knocking for every girl you decide to take home to fuck,” (Y/N) decided against making an even bigger scene, keeping the glass gripped firmly in her hand as she snapped at him, “and they probably complain pretty regularly considering you take a different one back every night,” she paused, seeing the surprise return to his eyes. It egged her on even more. “You thought I didn’t know, huh? Thought I hadn’t caught on to it? Why do you think it’s been three weeks and I haven’t answered a single one of your fucking texts, John?” she let him have it, taking her frustration out on him all while getting more frustrated by how he was looking at her.

It seemed like he hadn’t actually heard a word she said, because he was too busy flicking his eyes down to her lips, watching them as she unleashed her anger on him while his grin grew smugger with each word said.

“Oh shit…” Kara’s voice was full of surprise as she looked between the two, the dots finally getting connected in her mind. “That’s why you wanted to go…” she said to (Y/N) then.

“Yeah, that’s exactly why I wanted to go,” (Y/N) answered her friend in a huff, finally breaking eye contact with the man she’d been standing toe-to-toe with. “And I’d like to leave now,” she added, her desperation returning as her anger started to make her feel sick. This was certainly not where she wanted to have this conversation.

“I’ll take the glasses back,” Kara told her, gently taking the glass that (Y/N) had had a white-knuckle grip on from the moment John stopped her. (Y/N) didn’t even realize she’d been holding it that hard until she moved her fingers and they were sore from the tension they’d been under.

The end was in sight now. All she had to do was wait a few more moments for Kara to return. Then she would be away from John Shelby forever.

But of course, John Shelby couldn’t let her get away without one last word. “Like I said, (Y/N)…I missed you,” he said to her, looking her over one last time - as if he was committing her to memory because he knew he’d never cross paths with her again. I hope my memory fucking haunts you, she thought to herself as she thought of one last thing to leave him with.

“Yeah, well you’re more fun to miss,” she sneered at him, looking him over once more also before she pushed passed him to the exit. Kara would have to find her outside because she didn’t want to be in his presence for one more second.

More fun to miss, indeed…although she wasn’t sure if she’d even miss him.

…ok so that was more angsty than fluffy, but the prompt took me on a ride and I had a bunch of fun writing it. I hope you don’t I strayed from your wishes slightly, anon!

Backstory

As an Ohioan born and raised, you knew the name Joe Burrow. You had connections too.

Your dad coached for the Ohio University football team at the same time as Jimmy Burrow, Joe’s father.

It wouldn't be till years later, in mid-2022, that you would first meet Joe.

You two would meet at a family dinner that your families had together. Your dad and Jimmy wanted to catch up, along with introducing each other to their families, and Joe was the only one of Jimmy’s three boys who was able to make it.

You would be a liar if you said he wasn't attractive because he was, but you were too nervous to approach him.

Who wouldn't be? He was having an insane career in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, and he was just oddly intimidating.

Throughout the dinner hosted in your parent's backyard, you found yourself in a secluded corner by yourself when Joe walked over and sat next to you.

It was almost insane how you two immediately hit it off. The more you guys talked the more you realized Joe was a normal guy, just had a known name.

He was very sweet actually, and surprisingly flirty. You were aware of the fact that he had just gotten out of a relationship so you held back from seriously flirting, but later that night before he left he'd ask you something you'd never forget.

“Could I maybe get your number? I had a lot of fun with you tonight, and stop me if I'm misreading things, but would you like to go to dinner sometime?”

You assured him that he wasn't misreading anything and exchanged numbers.

A week later you guys would go to dinner, which led to a date, and another, and another, till Joe finally asked you to be his girlfriend on December 20th, 2022.

There were a few obstacles you two would have to learn to overcome. One of those things is having to be long-distance. You were still in college at OU in Athens and Joe was in Cincinnati.

You had your doubts that it would work, but Joe deserved a chance from you.

Another obstacle was how people preserved your relationship because of your age gap. When you guys started dating, you were nineteen, and Joe was twenty-six. You and Joe didn't care though, because it didn't impact your relationship directly.

Town Tavern was opened Jul. ‘55 by owners Marie and Earl Turmon, locals who lived at nearby 708 Madison. In its heyday of the late 50s the 24-hour bar, casino, and coffee shop was central to Westside’s nightlife scene. After the closure of the Moulin Rouge in Fall ’55, Town Tavern became the main Westside destination for black performers who were headlining the segregated Strip hotels.

Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, Cab Calloway, Arthur Lee Simpkins, Bob Bailey, Dorothy Dandridge, and the Ink Spots all performed in a single night during an NAACP cocktail party in Dec. '55. Review-Journal columnist Forrest Duke wrote of another night when, “Pearl Bailey and her Flamingo gang sashayed over to Earl Turmon’s Town Tavern Wednesday night, and the joint was, to put it rather mildly, jumping.” Another columnist’s blurb describes an employee’s going-away party with music by jazz musicians Christine Chatman (singer, piano), Al Morgan (bass), Chuck Hampton (drums), and Bob Bailey as emcee, “there with his lovely wife Anna who dances in the Pearl Bailey’s Flamingo show.”

The club became “New” Town Tavern in late ’59 and operated more or less continually until 2013. Westside's nightlife scene deteriorated in the 60s – the unplanned byproduct of integration was the decline in black gaming establishments, but Town Tavern remained. Florence Elmore owned the club in '70-71. Danny Curtis & Elijah Green bought the club in '71; Green was still the owner in the 80s, renovating and enlarging the club after a fire in '81. In the 90s it became “Ultra New” Town Tavern and continued operated under this name until closing.

Town Tavern originally had a top hat-shaped sign. Its second sign with "Town Tavern" in a ribbon and "Casino" in a circle, was installed in the early 60s and remained until 2023. In 2016 the words "Town Tavern" were replaced with "Tokyo" for a casino which ultimately never opened. The sign was removed from the building on 8/16/2023.

Fuller's Index of Nevada Gaming Establishments says the Club Alabam was licensed for 21 from 5/1/43 to 7/2/43. City Commission Meeting Minutes of 7/2/43 (p97) states that the liquor and gaming license of Joe LaDue at Club Alabam was denied. The club burned down 9/29/43. Liquor License. Review:

A small town brother's best friend romance featuring a woman who just turned down a proposal and moved back into her small town to work on her inherited bait shop... all the while reuniting with her brother's best friend, ex marine single father and completely irresistible but off limits. Maren used to be a popular youtuber before it became too much and she moved out. Now years later after her boyfriend proposed to her, she turns him down and walks away from her job as a park ranger to go home and work on her inheritance, a bait shop. Maren is now reunited with her brother and his best friend, Liam, a handsome ex marine who is now a single father. Liam is completely off limits but she can't help but be drawn to him and his charming kids and the home that they are giving her. While she is meant to be just working on fixing up the bait shop and selling it....but maybe Liam can convince her to stay. This was definitely a small town romance with spice as Maren and Liam instantly fall for each other. The book was just okay for me, the whole "issues" with the relationship weren't really that much of an issue and the romance was insta love. I really wish I could like it more but something about this book just didn't convince me over. The romance was fine but the story just kind of felt like it was missing something and I can't put my finger on it. While this one wasn't for me I do think that if you like the trope of brother's best friend I think you'd have fun with it.

Being on the ARC readers list for an author can sometimes provide a collection of authors that include new authors along with tried-and-true ones. This shifter short-story/novella collection includes a variety of types of shifters who meet their match in a number of different and sometimes surprising ways. It has plenty of tropes and fun stories to devour.

BEAR CLAW BAKE OFF by Robin O’Connor

What could a hedgehog and a bear have in common and how WOULD that work if they were to be fated mates? Joe, a bear shifter needs money to fulfill his dream and build a bakery while Neely the hedgehog just wants to do something well enough to impress her family. Little did the two know that their off the charts chemistry would see them winning more than they thought they would!

MISS SHIFTER AMERICA by Lisabeth Chretien

Miss (human) America has nothing on the pageant put on by the shapeshifting women. I can’t imagine what such a gathering would be like and how just one could be selected from so many! Elle and Poppy are there to win a crown but might win much more than that when they finally spend some time together.

So apparently I haven't done any albumposting since the Missy Elliott one so big block incoming strap the fuck in we goin' faaaaast.

Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. This album was pretty forgettable overall. "Are You Ready to be Heartbroken?" was nice enough. Also it makes the twee song "Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken" make just so god damn much more sense now. 3/5

Roger the Engineer by The Yardbirds. So forgettable I did, in fact, forget every last note I heard. Does this album actually exist? You tell me! My brain certainly can't confirm! 3/5

To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar. Liked it well enough, didn't love it. Favorite track was "The Blacker the Berry." 4/5

Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J. The title track is the best thing on here and is the only track I remember at all, and that doesn't inspire much because the title track is just pretty good. 3/5

Surfer Rosa by The Pixies. Okay so if there's one thing that listening to all these albums has taught me, one core thing you can take with you and remember, it's that The Pixies kick fucking ass seriously this is the worst album of theirs I've listened to and it's still better than a majority of what else I've heard. 4/5, listen to Bossa Nova first, then Dolittle, THEN this one is the order I'd give for what I've heard.

Chelsea Girl by Nico. This woman's voice is absolutely beautiful, but she just isn't working with good lyrics to sing. 3/5

Honky Tonk Masquerade by Joe Ely. This is one of those albums that if it had found me at a different time in my life I would have loved it forever. As is, eh it's fine I guess. 3/5, best track is "Boxcars."

Autobahn by Kraftwerk. This is the best Kraftwerk album I've heard, which means purely that I didn't despise it I understand that these guys were talented, important and influential but I just flatly hate most of what they made even as I respect that they were game changers who laid the groundwork for basically all music that came after. It was some nice enough background music for my day. 3/5, but like you legit should listen because knowing where the things you like came from is good.

Next by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. The name of the album is "Next" I'm not just saying this band is next up. So uh this album fucks. Literally this album is horny. I loved it. "Gang Bang" is a song I didn't know I needed in my life but is now precious to me. It has kind of the vibe of AC/DC's "Big Balls" if it dropped the tee-hee talking entirely in euphemism tone and instead was just directly about exactly what you think it's about. And I know this album came out not far from the free love hippy era, but it's still kinda crazy to hear something so sex positive and unashamed from before I was born. 5/5

Gentlemen by The Afghan Wigs. This album is boring. I have literally nothing to say about it. 3/5, moving on.

Millions Now Living Will Never Die by Tortoise. Now, this is why we don't judge books by their covers. I saw the super artsy pretentious sounding name. I saw the album saying it was 6 songs and 43 minutes meaning the songs are too god damn long. I saw the first song alone is 20+ minutes. I was super ready to write this off as something music critics like, but no this was fun as hell to listen. The blurb the artist has on Spotify says this is indie rock and for that they are dirty liars. This absolutely isn't rock. It is, however, and absolute fucking *journey.* You should absolutely listen to this. 4/5

Let's Get Killed by David Holmes. It sucks. I will say Dave, we should do that, because then I wouldn't have to listen to more of this. 2/5

Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From the Crypt. This was a lot of fun. It's like somewhere between grunge and heavy metal. And as someone who likes both of those things, I enjoyed this. Two great tastes that taste great together. 4/5

And finally, album #700! Woooooooo. MTV Unplugged in New York by Nirvana. This is one of the big ones. It is just barely not in the top 10 on the website I generate these from. (#11.) There are less than 1% of all 1001 albums that people on average like better, including multiple Beatles, Bowie and Floyd albums. It truly sits among the elite. Is it actually that good...? Yeah no shit it's that good have you heard it? It's great. Nirvana is one of the all time greatest bands, and this album has some of the all time greatest versions of their songs plus some amazing covers. If you haven't heard anything from this album before, first let me welcome you oh successful time traveller from the past even my ass has heard a bunch of these already, and then go listen to it it's fucking great. Obviously 5/5

Three mature men and women find their happily ever after in Sweet Pines, Wyoming but only after first having to deal with some dangerous situations. The three male main characters are old friends from rodeo days but each of the women is either a native of town or new to town.

MARIA’S COWBOY:

Maria’s in debt and can’t seem to get a break as her ranch seems to be plagued with one problem after another. Taking a night off to enjoy herself provides a rather interesting escape that brings Huck into her life. Their story is probably my favorite of the three as this couple find their way to a wonderful future together…once they figure out why all of those difficulties keep plaguing Sky Wild Ranch.

TERESA’S COWBOY:

Teresa’s on the run when she reaches town. A stop at a Cup O’ Joe lands her a job and hopes for a safe future in seclusion but, as these stories go, her safe harbor doesn’t last forever and having Cole step in to help keep her safe leads to a whole lot more…including that special happily ever after they both so deserve.

CALLIE’S COWBOY:

Callie is also on the run trying to avoid an abusive ex-husband when an act as a good Samaritan sees her on a trail ride she was not properly prepared for. The chemistry between Harvey and Callie sizzles but only honesty can further relationship and see them riding happy trails together forever.

If you are looking for strong male leads with women who are their equals, this collection of stories just might be for you…especially if you like a bit more mature couple finding their HEA.
