Sheet Gasket Materials Selection

The selection of sheet gasket materials to seal two flat surfaces is diverse. The selection of the right material requires careful consideration of the application the material is being placed in. The key things to consider are:

1)    Media

We help customer ranging from Nasa to Joe Mechanic fixing his motorcycle.  In either case considering the media being sealed is critical.  The media coming into contact with the gasket material must be compatible with it. If when removing an old gasket, you notice the material is eaten up, it may not have been the right material to use in the first place.  Never assume the last person to install a gasket knew what they were doing.  Knowing the PH of the material, and the make- up of the media (often more than one chemical is involved) is critical.

2)    Temperature

Temperature is the easiest way to narrow down the selection of materials. Rubber based materials (including: Buna-N, EPDM, EPR,  Neoprene, SBR, Nitrile) are generally going to fail between 200 and 300 F. Flouroelastomers (a blend of rubber and polymer including FKM, Viton, Aflas, Kalrez, Chemrez, Ameri-rez), PTFE, EPTFE and silicones generally get you near 500 F.  More exotic materials like Mica, Vermiculite and Flexible Graphite cover the 500 F to 5,400 F (depending on the presence of Oxygen.

3)    Pressure

Using the wrong sheet material, especially when high pressure is involved gets people killed in the workplace.  Steam is often the most dangerous because a leak can be invisible to the naked eye. It’s not uncommon for a boiler room maintenance man to carry a stick to test flanges before walking in front of them. Generally speaking “soft goods” (sheet gasket materials that can be cut with a knife) are good for lower pressure service.  125lb., 150lb. and sometimes 300lb. ANSI flange service. Homogeneous sheet elastomers will contain the least amount of pressure and are often not recommended beyond 200 PSI. To retain higher pressures rubber gasket materials require reinforcement, which often includes Aramid fiber (Kevlar), Fiberglass, Mineral Fiber, or even cloth (cotton, nylon, fiberglass or aramid).

4)    Application

Two gaskets that are seeing the same media, temperature and pressure may not behave the same due to the application.  Some applications require glass lined piping which will restrict the amount of bolt torque being placed on the gasket (or the glass will shatter). Other applications have much more vibration which can prematurely enable a leak path.  Some flanges containing the gasket material will have a different pattern, a number of bolts, size of bolts and spacing, all of which affect how well the gasket sheet is maintained and contained.  For higher pressure applications a tongue and groove gasket area will help to contain a gasket in place, preventing blowouts.

5)    Size

If you’re designing a new gasket material application there is more to consider than one might think.  Unless you’re dealing with ANSI or API standard flanges you need to consider the surface area of the gasket and the bolt load on it.  A good example of this comes from some troubleshooting we have done in the field.  Consider a gasket that lasts a while but soon begins dripping. The first thing most mechanics will do it to tighten the bolts to place more load on the gasket.  While this is correct, sometimes the cause is that the bolt load on the gasket is just barely enough to maintain a seal. The entire bolt load that is generated is spread over the surface of the gasket regardless of the type of sheet gasket material. If you can reduce the surface area, but cutting away some of the gaskets the load will have less area to spread to and result in a higher amount of pressure per SQ inch on the remaining gasket material.  This is why ring gaskets will generally seal better than full face gaskets.

The type of fasteners you are using, the number, size and if and with what they are lubricated also come into play when calculating the ideal amount of torque required to create and maintain a seal.  Consult our engineering department for M and Y values on the selected sheet gasket material.  Explanations of M and Y are also available.

Voici la toute première intervention SPM en octobre 2016 à New York. L’artiste Cari Gonzalez-Casanova et Lucienne Pereira placent des stickers anti-marketing directement sur des produits dans un supermarché. Les gens s’arrêtent, posent des questions, discutent et participent eux aussi à la campaign. 

Soft Power Manual (SPM) est un projet participatif initié par CGC avec la participation de: Ludovic Bernhardt, Nico Dockx, Badr El Hammami, Eric Giraud, Zuzanna Janin, Eirini Linardaki & Vincent Parisot, Eric Maillet, Joe Martin, Hervé Paraponaris, Susanne Strassman, Andrea Suzan, Jean-Paul Thibeau, Luca Vitone, Aleksandar Zaar

Dans un premier temps, le SPM kit a été distribué à des artistes dans plusieurs villes. La plate-forme internet https://softpowermanual.tumblr.com a été ensuite créée pour regrouper leurs interventions. 

Une partie du kit SPM est disponible gratuitement à La Villa Arson, Nice FRANCE (jusqu’au 30 avril) pendant  l’exposition Go Canny! Poétique du sabotage. 

Toute documentation des actions utilisant le kit, part toute personne, sera mise sur la plate-forme participative.
