Azad Kashmir

Azad Kashmir, the Pakistan side of Kashmir, went downhill after the 2005 earthquake. The 2005 earthquake brought a lot of destruction, weakening the economic system of Kashmir. Earthquake brought the city of Muzaffarabad to rubble. The earthquake resulted in 2 million homeless people and eighty-eight thousand dead and one hundred thousand injured. Kashmiri’s needed help to recover from such a devastating event from the Pakistan government, but instead, the Pakistan government caused more problems as they brought in their military to help people. Most people suffered anyways as there is no health care in Kashmir; people tried their best to survive. As the earthquake happened, there were Pakistani troops that were stationed in Azad Kashmir, but they refused to help as they didn’t believe it was their job to help. Instead, they left Kashmir. The only reason that those troops were there was to keep a close watch on the political stands of Kashmiri politics.

Azad Kashmir is a legal anomaly. According to United Nations (U.N.) resolutions dating back to 1948, Azad Kashmir is neither a sovereign state nor a province of Pakistan, but rather a “local authority” with responsibility over the area assigned to it under a 1949 ceasefire agreement with India.

According to the U.N, Azad Kashmir is a legal anomaly, it’s neither part of Pakistan nor part of India, but its local authority is under the control of Pakistan. The Pakistani government is influencing Kashmir’s and controlling politics since 1948. In 1965, construction for the Mangla Dam would start, to provide electricity for both Kashmir and Pakistan. At first, Kashmiris didn’t think much of it, as it provided power for them and Pakistan. Then after some time, Kashamiri’s started to notice the effect of the dam on two of their biggest river Jhelum and Poonch. The rivers belong to Kashmiri individuals that have been using as means for their day to day life. Mangla dam basically contaminated the water- Kashmir doesn’t have any water reservation, they mostly depend on rainfall and the rivers, causing serious drought problem. In 2018, the Pakistani government made it that the electricity from the Mangla dam would go 80% toward Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. They made the decision to change from 50-50 to 80-20 without telling the Kashmiri people about it. In conclusion, Pakistan benefited from the Mangla dam, while those that lived around it suffered from the environmental results of the Mangla dam. The solution to this problem would be that they bring the ratio back to 50-50 as Kashmiris need their electricity in the advancing world.

To Pakistan, Mangla is a vital asset that brings many benefits. Mangla is thus critical to the success of the Pakistani economy as a whole. Yet despite the great benefits which Mangla has brought to everyone in Pakistan proper, those unfortunate enough to live immediately upstream of the dam have had to bear the brunt of its environmental costs.
