Hey if you have the time, what are some of your current fav ships and what are your fav things about them (their dynamic or a scene in canon or whatever) and some headcanons? I know this is might take some time to answer and I'm not sure you want to, but if you do thanks a lot. Im just curious. And yeah, just have a great day (:
Thank you for asking. I am allways happy to make extra long posts ;)
I had a hard time deciding how to start that post but decided to go with:
Cherik - X men
There are multiple reasons why this ship means the world to me and will be allways close to my heart.
First, at all I grew up with the xmen movies. Cuddled up with my best friend, in her bed, watching the old x men movies (xm1 to 3) until 2 o’clock in the night. It is a feeling like coming home. And the underlying queer theme allways attracted me.
Second: I am a sucker for the enemies to lover trope. It is this amazing thing that no matter how much they “hate” each other, or how long they have not seen eachother, or how deeply they hurted eachother if one one of them is in danger the other one will allways run and save the other one. This is love imo
Also they are as canon as they could be in Hollywood. My headcanon for young!Cherik is similar to the one Michael Fassbender has for them. They are married, doing a fishing trip around the whole world, to come back at the end to Genosha raising, teaching and carrying for a new generation of mutant kids.
For old Cherik: They are happily living together in the school, due to the utopia Wolverine created in Days of future past. Magneto is probably teaching the kids mechanics
And there are allready rumors that Marvel wants to recast them. If they will touch our happy Cherik ending with their rotten hands i will riot!
Stormpilot - Star Wars
Yeah i still use that name. Because i am on this boat since the beginning. It is a little bit damaged but still sailing so this is my happy ship.
I was never a big Star Wars fan but these two dudes made me fall in love with Star Wats because even before i realized i was queer i knew this ship was special and make history, in one way or another. And we did, didn’t we? We are now taken seriously. Shipping is not a “ugly” fangirl thing anymore but people start to realize taht it is also a scream for representation. But we still have to go a long way
I love that this kind of a “love at the first sight” thing (at least for Poe). And that they have an instead chemistry with eachother. I was sitting in TROS and smiling like an idiot everytime they were on screen and cried buckets when they were both single and together in the end. They treat eschother well and have a deep respect for eachother. There is no macho behavior just pure friendship with a lot of gay tension. Every scene with them in TROS was a blast. And i am sure Finn is now slowly realizing he is love with Poe as well. Poe gives Finn his ring. Finn finds out he is a long lost prince and learns jedi tricks. And then they marry. And adopt a lot of droids children!
They are my hope. And they will be my first tattoo.
Phrack (Phryne x Jack) - MFMM
One of the few straight ships i actively ship. They are so damn well written. There is nothing toxic about their relationship. And the slow burn tension is killing you slowly. How they care for eachother without Jack being Phrynes savior. And how Phyrne allways gets calm perfect Jack irritated is so cute.
Also the moments where Phyrne is teasing Jack or Jack calls Phryne “Phryne” instead of “Miss Fisher” like he normally does. And that Jack is ready to learn how to accept gay people and working independent women through Phryne is beautiful.
No headcanons here. I just want to watch the upcoming movie “Miss Fisher and the crypt of tears” that explains what happenes directly after the season 3 finale.
Give! Me! That! Movie! Now!
Keyla x Joann - Star Trek Discovery
There is not too much to say about them. I just hope they will be canon. They didn’t had much screentime yet but everytime they are together it feels like they are dating since years. And Keyla is confirmed bisexual. I hope we will see them together in season 3. If not i will just keep on pretending that they got married at the end, adopted a lot of space kitten and live their best lives as speca wIw.
Also the are holding hands in that scene above, fight me!
Michael x Tilly - Star Trek Discovery
Nothing better then space wIw pairings.
I like how they deeply care for eachother and Tilly was ready to accept Michael even though she was an outcast. And Michael was ready to accept Tilly even though she normally can not deal with talkactive people.
Tilly helped Michael a lot to express her feelings while Michael helped Tilly to fight for her dream as a Captain.
Also they canonly hold hands multiple times. They are so soft around eachother. I am so ready for season 3.
Sherlock x Joan x Marcus - Elementary
I actually ship them in every variation (because above all Johnlock) but here i make an expactation. The deep care they have for eachother. They had a few problems at the start but if someone feels bad now, both are ready to help that person. Joan is constantly checking on Marcus personal live, and lives with Sherlock anyway, while Sherlock constantly looks out for Joan and Marcus and looks that they find happines. And Marcus has thought multiple times about moving in with Sherlock and Joan.
While Sherlock doesn’t really liked to be touched both Joan and Marcus have iconic hug scenes with Sherlock. And after Joan and Sherlock find out that Marcus will move to a new job they both do everything they can so Marcus will be successful, The epsiode ends with Sherlock looking at Marcus for a really long time, smiling like a love sick dork, while he lefts with “ It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright now, I’m fine with how it all went down “ playing the background.
I haven’t watched season 7 yet but with Marcus risking his career for both Joan and Sherlock i hope he will finally moves in with them.
Honorable mentions to my fav ships forever:
Nomanita - Sense8
The lesbian crime fighting duo every show deserve. They only know pure love and support for eachother.
And i send a flip flop to netflix to see them getting married. Yeah i am that extra sometimes
Johnlock - EVERY univserse
Just because!
And the “i just discovered it”-ship:
Geralt x Jaskier - The witcher
They are so dumb. It is amazing. I hope Jaskier finds a nice boyfriend in the next seasons. Or gets to kiss Geralt. Because he definitly wants to
I hope this list satisfied you. I am allways happy to make more.
Have a great day as well

Willow (1988) Review
"W-w-i-l-l-o-w! You i-i-i-i-d-iot!"
With Willow, George Lucas tries to do for High Fantasy what he did for Space Opera. He really shouldn't have bothered.
Set in a fantasy land so generic they don't even bother to give it a name, the film kicks off with the birth of Elora Danan, a child prophesied to bring about the end of Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh, there to collect an easy paycheck). Who is Queen Bavmorda? No idea. This film never really takes the time to delve into the backstory of any of its characters. All you need to know is she is your standard evil monarch/sorceress with an imposing looking castle in a desolate wasteland. Fantasy movie villains never build their castle anywhere scenic. Do they have something against nice views? Are they worried they'll attract too many tourists? Or are they just really cheap? I imagine real estate prices are low in desolate wastelands. Ideal for a evil queen looking to save some cash while fighting a lot of expensive wars.
In a moment of shockingly lax security, the guards leave the baby alone with the midwife who then promptly escapes from the castle with the newborn and sends it floating down a river, Moses-style, before she is killed. Bavmorda sends her daughter, Sorcha, and head minion, General Skelator, to find Elora and bring her back so she can cast her into another dimension with a ridiculously long ceremony instead of, you know, just killing the little shit then and there. Honestly, movie villains would fail a lot less if they didn't give into their inherent need to pointlessly over-complicate things.
Eventually the baby is found by the family of Hobbits Nelwyn led by Willow Ufgood, a farmer and amateur magician who longs to be apprentice to the local wizard. After the village is attacked by one of Bavmorda's hounds, the local wizard tells Willow that he must go on a grand quest to return the baby to her people. A quest that he decides to sit out. I guess he knows what happens to fatherly mentor figures in these type of movies and realised he was better off staying home.
If this all sounds familiar that's because it is. Willow doesn't just rip whole pages out of every major fantasy novel ever written, it recycles the plot of Star Wars (I am not calling it A New Hope). Willow is basically Luke, a farmer who longs to escape his farm and become a great Jedi wizard. He's reluctantly entrusted with transporting the means of defeating the bad guy (a baby instead of a droid with Death Star plans) first to a OAP with magical powers and then to a rebel base. Along the way he teams up with Val Kilmer as a poor man’s Han Solo who later develops a love hate relationship with Joanne Whalley's spirited princess who just so happens to be the daughter of the villain.
I mean, it technically isn't plagiarism if you're just shamelessly stealing from yourself.
As with Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lucas entrusted this potential new franchise to one of his dear friends. Unfortunately, that dear friend was Ron Howard not Steven Spielberg. Now, Howard isn't a bad director, he's just a rather unremarkable one. He's the epitome of a safe pair of hands. He's the type of guy you hire when you want the film to come in on time, on budget and to spec. That's really all Willow is: a by the numbers tale made so competently that it lacks anything even remotely distinctive or memorable.
Davis is likeable, if bland, as Willow while Kilmer and Whalley are just bland. There’s no denying that Kilmer can be a magnetic presence in the right role (see Tombstone or Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang), but his character is nothing more than a dashing rogue stereotype, there to balance Willow’s earnestness with snark. And his romance with Sorsha? God, that is as clumsy as it is unconvincing. The same can be said for her decision to switch sides halfway through the movie. Just as the film never bothers to develop its villain, it is also skips on her relationship with her daughter or what would motivate her to betray her, besides meeting a cute boy.
Notes and Quotes
--Despite playing the title character and hero of the film, Davis gets third billing behind Kilmer and Whalley.
--Lucas' original title was Munchkins.
--The finale starts off with two sorceresses throwing special effects at each other until they run out of money and then it's just two old ladies punching each other.
--Industrial Light & Magic developed new digital morphing technology for the scene where Willow tries to turn Fin Raziel back into a human, but keeps turning her into different animals instead.
--There are some comedy pixies that are a worrying sign of the horror that was come with Jar Jar Binks.
--Lucas wrote a trilogy of novels with X-Men writter Chris Claremont, entitled The Chronicles of the Shadow War, that picked up the story fifteen years later and followed a teenage Elora Danan.
--James Horner provides a rousing score that is typical of his 80s output.
Willow: "What are you doing?" Madmartigan: "I found some blackroot. She loves it." Willow: "Blackroot? I'm the father of two children, and you never, ever give a baby blackroot." Madmartigan: "Well my mother raised us on it. It's good for you! It put's hair on your chest, right Sticks?" Willow: "Her name is not Sticks! She's Elora Danan, the future empress of Tir Asleen and the last thing she's gonna want is a hairy chest!"
High Aldwin: "Go in the direction the bird is flying!" Burgelcutt: "He's going back to village!" High Aldwin: "Ignore the bird. Follow the river."
Two and a half out of four imposing looking castles in desolate wastelands.

Story Beginnings
Stolen from @serenwib
Rules: list the first lines of your last ten published stories. If there are any patterns yourself, and see if anyone else notices any! tag up to ten friends!
“Tell me, Poe, do you always romanticize your own destruction?”
He could feel their eyes on him.
“Here you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”
Raised to be king, T’Challa had always known he would have to choose his spouse for more than love. A good king served his people first and himself second – if he was truly lucky, these two desires aligned but if they didn’t a good king would choose the greater good.
Kay had suffered many annoyances since leaving the Empire for the Rebel Alliance, most of them involving his new Rebel allies and the word “no.” There was a lot of “no” involved in being a Rebel.
What do you fear? For thirteen years of her apprenticeship, Mistress Joanne had asked this question over and over again.
“Don’t,” Cassian said, lifting his blaster up, not quite pointing it at the droid but definitely lifting it in his general direction, “even think of it.”
“Bodhi?” A mere moment passed before his prod was followed by a chant of, “Bodhi? Bodhi? Bodhi?”
“Kay.” A sigh. “Kay.” Another sigh followed, this one distinctly more exasperated. “If you don’t hold still this is going to get messy.”
It’s late by the arbitrary rhythm of day and night they followed aboard the Falcon, the ship quiet while the crew slept, lights dimmed to a mellow glow intended to lull organics back to sleep.
Whoever wants to do it is welcome to!

The Missing Bits of The Star Trek Discover Finale.
Keyla Detmer/ Joann Owosekun (Jola)
Star Trek Dico Spoilers Ahead!
They stumbled on, they're feet dragging.
"Why can't the Narcelles be closer," Rhys wheezes. Joann can see them struggling she can see Keyla's heaving form in front of her.
"We're almost at the access point," Joann tries to reassure as they struggle through the corridor. "Hang in there," She urges as her own feet stumble.
She should have expected it, she had seen oxygen deprivation before. Rhys's legs give out from under him. Stumbling into Keyla and taking them both down. She's running before Keyla hits the ground, checking her for any injuries and those blue eyes stare into her own. The struggle that Joann knows is there. She reaches for the oxygen from Tilly and lets Keyla have more oxygen than she should.
"I don't think I can get up," Rhys wheezes as Keyla's hand grips her wrist weakly trying to pull the oxygen from her and Joann gives it to Rhys as Keyla urges silently, ever the saviour Joann thinks.
"You have to try," Joann urges. "Both of you," Joann says as Keyla tries to stand only to slip down the panelled wall.
"Owo," Tilly's strained voice comes makes her turn. "You have to go by yourself. Take the oxygen."
"What?" Joann stands turning and staring at Tilly like she's lost her mind. These are her friend. Her family, she can't leave them to die. "No. You'll suffocate."
"We're just delaying the inevitable," Tilly argues as she leans heavily on the wall, her voice strained. "You have to finish the mission."
She doesn't expect Tilly to slide down the wall, she had expected her to last longer and as she glances at Keyla who gives her a minimal nod. "Please," Tilly whispers in her gasps.
Joann turns as Rhys hands her the magnets and the oxygen, she looks at her friends her family, slowly dying in front of her and she knows she's the last hope, the last one that can make it. She watches as Nilsons eyes close and Bryce falls unconscious, she watches Rhys slump and her ears are filled with Tilly's gasps, her eyes connect with Keyla's and watch the tears slip down her cheek.
"Keyla," Joann begins but Keyla nods.
"Go," Keyla orders quietly.
"I love you all," Her voice shakes as she says and she doesn't want to leave, she wants to stay to hold Keyla as they fall unconscious together as they used to do in their days before when they first landed here. But she has a mission, she has to do her duty to Star Fleet, she's the only one that can help Michael.
She's can feel her lungs burn as she climbs and makes her way to the access point. She thinks of Keyla, her bright smile, the way her jaw sets when challenged, the way her eyes softened in the glow of a passing star or the small smile that shows her dimples. Or her concentration when challenged by a task at the control panel. She's gasping and coughing as she passes into the Narcelle room. Her legs giving out from under her. Even lifting the oxygen is a strain on her body.
"Oxygen depleted," The automatic voice comes and Joann wants to curse this godforsaken future. She sets it to the side, this is the end. She knows it, she stumbles through the magnetic field and stares at the connector, she was doing this for Keyla. To let her survive to let her friends survive. She slots the bomb into its location, exactly where Tilly told her. She gasps for oxygen that isn't there as she tries to make her way out of the Narcelle compartment. Joann stumbles, there's nothing left. No oxygen, no energy, nothing. There was nothing more she could do as she tries to crawl.
"Lieutenant Owosekun," The droid greets. It can't be here, the sphere data can't be here,
"You can't be here, the magnetic field," Joann gasps.
"You must stand," It instructs but Joann can't bare the thought of something else dying. She tries to tell it to go as darkness consumes her.
She misses the explosion or the dropping out of warp. She doesn't hear Michaels orders for life support.
"This Commander Michael Burnham. Any crew that can hear me, report to the bridge immediately. I repeat this Commander Burnham, report to the bridge immediately."
Joann wakes and the first thing she realises is she's not where she passed out, shes in the corridor. Where she left her crewmates. Where she left Keyla. Keyla Joann realises, she scrambles to her feet to find the whirring bot in front of her.
"You pulled me out of there," She says in awe.
"It was my honour," The droid says as it powers down and Joann feels her heart shudder.
"Thank you," Joann whispers before a groan makes her turn. She turns to find blue eyes watching her intently.
"You're alive," Keyla's soft voice fills her ears.
"So are you," Joann gasps stands, her body gravitating towards Keyla. Rhys moving makes her look around to the rest of the crew slowly waking up. "All of you," Joann gasps.
"You did it?" Tilly gasps.
"We did it," Joann reassures with a grin spreading over her face. Her eyes never straying from Keylas for too long.
"Let's go to the bridge then," Tilly orders. As the crew walk forward, Joann can't stop herself as her arms wrap so tightly around Keyla the relief washes over her at the smaller woman arms around her.
"Thank God," Joann whispers. They hold each other tightly that they can't stop the slight sway. As they pull apart she looks down into the blue eyes.
"You did it," Keyla whispers and Joann can't stop herself, she doesn't care about the crew or protocol as her lips crash into Keyla's. It feels staggeringly good to just give into it. Keyla responds immediately, Joann melts apart as soon as their bodies touch and Joann's hand ease down Keyla's back and Keyla lets out a small noise into the kiss.
Keyla’s hands take hold of Joann’s head, fingers twisting through the loose hair there and keeping their faces together. Joann feels overwhelmed by sensation in a way that makes her hands grip Keyla's waist. They’re heads resting softly against one another.
A pointed clearing of a throat makes them turn. "I get we just survived a near death experience," Tilly begins. "But maybe after we go to the bridge and get out of the Viridian?"

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Finale Ending Explained
https://ift.tt/3gYLntQ
This Star Trek: Discovery review contains major spoilers for the end of Season 3.
What a ride! The third season of Star Trek: Discovery was easily its most consistent and, dare I say, best yet? From the get-go, the series’ decision to vault its characters into the far future for its third outing proved itself a smart one, as the crew of the Discovery set about exploring this strange, new reality. The hour-long finale was a solid ending for the season, answering some questions we’ve had since the season premiere. In that way, “That Hope is You, Part 2” really was the perfect bookend to the premiere that started this far-future arc. That being said, the episode also set up some fascinating plot and character arcs for Season 4. Let’s break down all that happened in the Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 finale, and what it means for the bright future of this show.
We Finally Know What Caused The Burn
The big reveal in the Season 3 finale is the confirmation that it was a scared Su’Kal who caused The Burn when he was a small child. With Saru’s support and encouragement, Su’Kal faced the memory of the event: the death of his mother, when he was small. With her death, Su’Kal was all alone on the KSF Khi’eth, on a dilithium planet in an isolated nebula. His mother made Su’Kal promise not to turn off the holo until the Federation came. She couldn’t know that the Federation wouldn’t come for another 125 years.
Su’Kal is a polyploid, aka someone whose genetics were altered based on the environment around him. Because Su’Kal was born on a planet filled with dilithium, it gave him a unique connection to the element. The sonic scream he emitted upon losing his mother sent a shockwave through subspace that caused the Burn. Now that he is no longer in the nebula, it is unlikely a similar event will happen again. “I’d like to help repair what is broken, if I can,” Su’Kal tells Saru, when he learns the truth. Perhaps this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Kelpien.

The Bridge Crew Saves the Day
This was another excellent episode for Team Bridge Crew, who use their relative freedom on an occupied Discovery to sabotage the ship’s nacelle, dropping the ship out of warp and allowing the Federation and its allies to catch up. The Bridge Crew does so believing that it will be a suicide mission, as Osyraa has cut off life support to the lower decks of the ship, and they only have one oxygen tank amongst them. It’s Joann, who apparently has very impressive lung capacity, who manages to complete the mission (with an assist from one of those little DOT-23 droids), taking the oxygen tank and leaving her friends to die (per their request). “I love you all,” she tells them, which would have been solid last words. However, once Michael regains control of the ship, she is able to restore life support to the lower decks before her friends/co-workers die. So that’s good.
Are Keyla and Joann Together?
These two have always been depicted as especially close, and the season finale had me wondering yet again if these two might be romantically linked. “You’re alive.” “So are you.” This is their conversation post-nacelle explosion. There are other people there who are also unexpectedly alive. We see them embracing shortly after. I don’t support the cultural reenforcement of romantic relationships as more important than platonic ones, but I do wonder what the nature of this relationship is. Generally, I hope both characters—and their dynamic—get more screen time in Season 4.
Michael Kills Osyrra
Of course dropping the ship out of warp is only part of the solution. The Discovery crew also has to regain control of the ship. This is Michael’s mission. With some help from Book, and via a very cool sequence in the backend of the turbolift, Michael is able to make it to the ship’s data core. She manages to get rid of Osyraa’s goons, but Osyraa gets the upper hand in the fight, literally pushing Michael into the data core. It looks like it might be the end for Michael (though I doubt any viewer actually believed it would be), until shots fire from within the core, taking Osyraa out once and for all.
Michael emerges from the ship itself, telling the Season 3 antagonist: “Unlike you, I never quit.” As a post-murder tagline, it’s not a great one—especially because Osyraa didn’t really seem to be quitting so much as losing in this moment—but the imagery that accompanies it, of Michael literally merging with Discovery to take Osyraa out, is thematically-rich. This has been a season of Discovery really evolving as a character in their own right, and it was nice to see the ship itself have a hand in the crew regaining control of the ship.
Book Can Pilot the Spore Drive
In one of the most game-changing moments of the season, the Discovery crew figures out that, because of ability to communicate empathically with plants and animals, Book can pilot the spore drive. They bet the farm on the conclusion, too, jettisoning the warp core while within Osyraa’s ship Viridian. Book is eventually able to figure out how to jump, but they barely make it away in time. While this was a cool moment in the episode, it is a much cooler reveal for what it might mean moving forward. Book has expressed an interest in joining Starfleet, but it hasn’t been clear what his role in the fleet or on the Discovery might be. His ability to pilot the spore drive certainly makes him invaluable to the Discovery and to the Federation as a whole.
Yeah, Stamets is Still Pissed at Michael
One of the minor, unresolved character threads left lingering at the end of Season 3 is Stamets’ anger towards Michael for forcibly removing him from the Discovery in the season’s penultimate episode. Frankly, Michael made the right choice. If Stamets had remained on the ship, then Osyraa could have forced him to use the spore drive and the Federation never would have been able to catch up. That being said, I can’t say I wouldn’t be pissed at Michael if I were in Stamets’ shoes. By physically forcing Stamets off the ship, she took the choice to stay and try to save his friends and family away from him. But them’s the breaks when you volunteer to be the universe’s sole spore drive pilot.
Gray Gets a Corporeal Form, Then Loses It Again
One of the chief joys of the Season 3 finale was seeing Gray gain corporeal form while in the holo-program, allowing people other than Adira the opportunity to see and interact with him. (Hugh takes the chance to give Gray a big hug!) The holo gave Gray the form of a Vulcan (if you were wondering, Adira is Xahean here), but, for Gray, it just matters that he can be seen. When faced with the dismantling of the holo, Gray tells Adira and Hugh that he doesn’t want to go back to before. “It’s not enough,” he says. “I’m stuck. Tal’s stuck.” Hugh promises that they will find a way to make sure Gray is seen, but when the episode ends, Gray is still invisible to all but Adira again.
Burnham Becomes Captain of the Discovery
Discovery churns through at least one captain per season and the ship ends the season with a different captain than it started with: Michael has replaced Saru as captain (at least for now). Saru has taken a leave of absence to help Su’Kal settle into his life on Kaminar. It’s unclear for how long. When Michael brings up waiting until his return to decide anything permanently, Admiral Vance pushes back, with Saru’s blessing. So will Michael be Discovery captain forever and ever? Frankly, the show seems to have left enough room for the writers’ room to make that decision later, as they are breaking Season 4.
The Federation is Back on Its Feet
The season finale was a happy ending, not only for the Discovery but for the entire Federation. With Osyraa dead, the source of the Burn discovered, and the Discovery equipped with two spore drive pilots, the future is looking promising. As Michael’s closing voiceover tells us, the Discovery is poised to bring dilithium to the worlds of the Federation that have been cut off since the Burn. With this new source, they will be able to properly rejoin the Federation. With this new mission outlined in the finale’s closing minutes, Season 4 seems to already have a new plot structure, one even more based on discovery and diplomacy than Season 3.
We also learned that Trill decided to rejoin the Federation, and the Ni’Var have opened lines of communication with the Federation back up. The fact that the Ni’Var responded to Michael’s request for help earlier in the episode, effectively coming to the Federation’s aid when they needed it the most, says a lot about their potential willingness to become part of the organization again.

Star Trek: Discovery Just Challenged the Federation’s Fiscal Hypocrisy

What Does the Closing Quote Mean?
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 ends with a tribute to Gene Roddenberry, and to his original vision for Star Trek, exemplified through the following quote: “In a very real sense, we are all aliens on a strange planet. We spend most of our lives reaching out and trying to communicate. If during our whole lifetime, we could reach out and really communicate with just two people, we are indeed very fortunate.”
Why did the series decide to end the season this way? As showrunner Michelle Paradise told Comicbook.com: “It emerged closer to the end of the post process as we were finishing post for the season and just recognizing that this was going to be airing at this particular time. And we just felt like it would be appropriate to have something from him. I mean, Gene Roddenberry, we’re only here because of what he did and because of the show that he created and there’s the baseline, the template that he established. And so it felt appropriate to have something from him, a quote from him at the end of our season. And that was one that resonated with us.”

A thief. An officer. A guardian. Three strangers, one shared destiny . . . When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing. Whispers of revolution have begun—a revolution that hinges on three unlikely heroes… Chatine is a street-savvy thief who will do anything to escape the brutal Regime, including spy on Marcellus, the grandson of the most powerful man on the planet. Marcellus is an officer—and the son of a renowned traitor. In training to take command of the military, Marcellus begins to doubt the government he’s vowed to serve when his father dies and leaves behind a cryptic message that only one person can read: a girl named Alouette. Alouette is living in an underground refuge, where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet. But a shocking murder will bring Alouette to the surface for the first time in twelve years…and plunge Laterre into chaos. All three have a role to play in a dangerous game of revolution—and together they will shape the future of a planet. Power, romance, and destiny collide in this sweeping reimagining of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Les Misérables. Sky Without Stars (System Divine #1) by Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell Publisher: Simon Pulse Release Date: March 26th 2019 Genre: Retellings, Young Adult, Science Fiction Review: Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell is fantastic. I am loving this book. If the cover doesn't grab you right away then the story will draw you in. As the reader you are introduced to three characters, Chatine, Marcellus, and Alouette. These three people couldn't be more different but they will all touch each others lives in a different way. Chatine is a thief. Chatine has lived a hard life. She is considered to be part of the lowest part of society, the third estate. No one cares about her or others like her. Obviously she doesn't have the best outlook on life. Marcellus is the son of a renowned traitor. Marcellus wants to be the best solider that he can be but he just isn't cut out for it. He is so used to being alone that he really just wants to be loved by anyone. Alouette has a secret. She has lived underground her entire life. She grew up helping the sisters record history. Now she lives in a time that people don't remember the written word. Alouette wants nothing more than to go outside but once she is outside she discovers secrets about her past that she wasn't ready for. I really enjoy these characters. Just as importantly, I enjoyed the world building. Brody and Rendell brought us a beautiful world that is so vivid. Even the drabby parts were described so beautifully. I really enjoyed this book. One thing I really appreciate is this book makes me feel like I am there and that I am part of the story. I have read Les Miserables and I have to say that this is a great retelling of Les Miserables but I feel like a lot of backstory is left out compared to the book it is based on. I think someone who has not read Les Miserables won't have any issues with this story and they will probably breeze straight through it. Someone who has read it, will definitely notice the differences and the backstory that is missing. You should definitely check out this book. I really like it and I think it is worth your time to read. Plus there are so many good and fun things coming out about this book. Check it out because I don't think you will regret it. Favorite Quotes: High on a hill, the family built their Grand Palais under a vast climate-controlled dome. And in the flatlands below lived their chosen people. Since the day she was born into this Regime, she was fated to die young. She would never see the stars. She would never feel the warmth of real Sol-light on her face. She would never escape. He had to prove to himself, once and for all, that he was not his father’s son. He was a loyal grandson and a proud member of the Second Estate. She was so sick of it. The secrets. The mysteries. The torn-out pages. The hidden boxes. She needed answers. And she needed them now. The Map: Excerpt: Chapter One Chatine The rain was falling sideways in the Marsh. It was never a straight downpour. It was always crooked. Just like the people here. Con artists and hustlers and crocs, the lot of them. Anyone can be a saint until they’re hungry enough. Chatine Renard was perched high above it all, watching the stream of people churn through the busy marketplace like clotted blood through a vein. She was straddling an exposed metal beam that once connected the old freightship to its roof. At least, that’s what Chatine had been told—that the Frets were once titanic flying vessels that soared across the galaxy, bringing her ancestors to the planet of Laterre, the coldest and wettest of the twelve planets in the System Divine. But years of neglect and crooked rain had corroded the PermaSteel walls and ceilings, turning the staterooms in the passenger freightships into leaky, mold-ridden housing for the poor, and this cargo freightship into an open-air marketplace. Chatine pulled her hood farther down her forehead in an attempt to block her face. Much to her dismay, she’d noticed over the past few years that her eyelashes had grown longer, her chest had filled out, her cheekbones had become more pronounced, and her nose had slimmed to a dainty point, which she despised. She had streaked her face with mud before coming to the Marsh today, but every time she caught sight of her reflection in a puddle or the metal of a partially collapsed wall, she cringed at how much she still looked like a girl. So inconvenient. The Marsh was far more crowded today than usual. Chatine leaned forward and balanced on her stomach, hugging the beam to her chest as she scanned the countless faces that passed beneath her. They were always the same faces. Poor, downtrodden souls like her trying to find creative ways to stretch their weekly wages. Or con their neighbor out of a larg or two. Newcomers were rare to the Marsh. No one outside of the Third Estate bothered with the picked-over cabbages and mangy turnips for sale. With the exception of Inspecteur Limier and his army of Policier droids tasked with keeping the peace, the Frets and the marketplace in its center were normally avoided at all costs by anyone who didn’t live here. Which was why the man in the long coat immediately caught Chatine’s eye. His wealth was written all over his groomed black beard, matching hair, pressed clothes, and sparkling adornments. Second Estate, to be sure. She’d never known the First Estate to ever venture out of Ledôme. The climate-controlled biodome sat high on the hill just outside the capital city of Vallonay, shielding the First Estate from Laterre’s persistent downpours. And the slums below. Chatine’s eyes raked over the man, taking in every stitch and every button. Her gaze expertly landed on the gold medallion dangling like bait from his neck. She didn’t have to see it up close to know it was a relic from the Last Days, rescued from the burning embers of a dying planet. The Second Estate loved their First World relics. Five hundred largs easy, Chatine calculated in her head. Enough money to feed an entire Third Estate family for weeks. But it wouldn’t be long before the rest of the crocs in the Marsh spotted the treasure too and made their play. Which meant Chatine had to move fast. Gripping the beam with both hands, she swung her legs over the side and launched her body to the nearby catwalk, landing silently in a crouch. Directly underneath her, the man continued farther into the marketplace, weaving around the loose chickens that roamed the stalls searching for scraps. His gaze swept left and right as though taking mental inventory of the space. For a moment, Chatine wondered what he was doing here. Had he gotten lost on his way back up to Ledôme? Or was he here on some kind of business? But then she remembered the annual Ascension happening later today and reasoned he was probably a foreman of a fabrique, come to round up his workers who were skipping out on their shifts to get jacked up on weed wine, all the while hoping to win a new life. “Win a new life?” Chatine muttered to herself and let out a bitter laugh. Deluded fools, all of them. She crept across the grid of overhead walkways and ramps, skillfully ducking to avoid broken water pipes and leaping over giant chasms in the grated floor. All the while, she kept a close watch on the man, making sure she was never more than a few steps behind him. He finally slowed near Madame Dufour’s stall, pulled an apricot from his pocket, and took a large bite, the juice dripping into his beard. Chatine’s mouth started to water. She’d only ever tasted an apricot once, when a crate had fallen off the back of a cargo transporteur delivering fruit from the hothouses to Ledôme. Chatine watched Madame Dufour size the man up with sinister fascination. The old croc was practically licking her lips at the sight of such an easy mark. It was now or never. Ducking under the broken railing, Chatine grabbed onto the raised rim of the walkway floor and somersaulted over the edge. She whipped her body forward, fell three mètres down, and adeptly caught the beam below her. She circled around until it rested against her hips and she could balance there. She was now only a mètre above the man’s head. Yet with the buzz of the busy marketplace, no one even bothered to look up. “What a pitiful sight,” the man said, taking another bite of his apricot. He didn’t even bother to hide his disgust. The Second Estate rarely did. It was something about being stuck in the middle, Chatine had always noticed—not quite rulers and yet far from being one of the wretched like her—that gave the Second Estate their shameless sense of arrogance. They were almost more intolerable than the First Estate. Almost. Chatine’s gaze cut to the left, taking in the tower of empty crates stacked up next to Madame Dufour’s stall. She shimmied along the beam until she was directly above them. Then, she tipped forward, rotated around, and kicked both feet out in front of her. The crash was louder than she anticipated. The crates toppled to the ground, avalanching around the man as he fell to his knees with a grunt. Chatine moved quickly. Landing in a squat, she crawled through the wreckage until she found the man and graciously helped him back onto his feet. He was so busy brushing dust and cabbage leaves from his coat, he didn’t even feel the medallion being lifted from his neck. “Are you all right, Monsieur?” Chatine asked in her friendliest tone, slipping the pendant into her pocket. The man barely looked at her as he straightened his hat. “Quite all right, boy.” “You must be careful in the Marsh, Monsieur. It isn’t safe for someone of your rank.” “Merci,” he said dismissively as he tossed the apricot he’d been eating toward Chatine. She caught it and flashed him an appreciative smile. “Vive Laterre.” “Vive Laterre,” he echoed before turning away. Chatine grinned at the man’s back as she turned on her heels and slipped the half-eaten apricot into her pocket. It took all her strength not to consume the entire thing here and now. She knew the man would hardly even miss that gold medallion from his neck. He probably had ten just like it back in his manoir in Ledôme. But to her, it was everything. It would change everything. The wind picked up, howling through the stalls and biting viciously at Chatine’s skin. She pulled her tattered black coat tighter around her, trying in vain to stave off the chill. But the holes and ripped lining of her clothes weren’t the problem. It was the hunger—the ribs poking through her skin. There wasn’t a single shred of insulation left on her body. But after that score, she was finding it hard to care. As Chatine headed toward the south exit of the Marsh, weaving through stalls selling moldy potatoes, slimy leeks, and pungent seaweed dragged in from the nearby docks, there was a new lightness to her gait. A new hopefulness in her step. But just before passing through what used to be the old cargo ship’s loading bay, Chatine felt a large hand clamp down on her shoulder and she stopped dead in her tracks, a shiver running through her. “So nice of you to help out a member of the Second Estate,” a cold, robotic voice said. “I’ve never seen such chivalry from a Renard.” The emphasis he placed on her last name made Chatine squirm. She closed her eyes, mustering strength, and painted on a blithe smile. She slowly turned around. “Inspecteur Limier,” she said. “Always a pleasure.” His stony expression didn’t change. It hardly ever did. The circuitry implants on the left side of his face made it nearly impossible for the inspecteur to express any emotion. Chatine often wondered if the man was even capable of smiling. “I wish I could say the same for you, Théo.” His tone was flat. Only her parents called her Chatine. Everyone in the Frets knew her as Théo. It was the name she’d given herself ten years ago, when they’d first moved to the capital city of Vallonay and Chatine had decided that life as a boy would be much less complicated than life as a girl. Chatine clucked her tongue. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Inspecteur.” “What did you take from the kind monsieur?” Limier asked, his half-human, half-robot voice clicking on the hard consonants. Chatine refreshed her smile. “Whatever do you mean, Inspecteur? I know better than to steal from the hand that feeds me.” She nearly gagged on the words. But if they saved her from a one-way ticket to Bastille—the price you paid for stealing from an upper estate—then she could choke her way through them. Chatine held her breath as the inspecteur’s circuitry flickered on his face. He was computing the information, analyzing her words, searching for hints of perjury. Over the past ten years of living in the Frets, Chatine had learned how to lie. But lying to a human being was one thing. Lying to a cyborg inspecteur, programmed to seek the truth, was quite another. She waited, keeping her smile taut until the circuits stopped flashing. “Will that be all, Inspecteur?” Chatine asked, smiling sweetly while pressing her hands against her tattered black pants. Her palms were starting to sweat, and she didn’t want his heat sensors to pick up on it. Then, slowly, Chatine watched the inspecteur’s gloved hand extend toward her. With a soft touch that chilled her to the bone, he pushed up her black hood to reveal more of her face. His electric orange eye blinked to life, scanning her features. It seemed to linger a beat too long on her high, feminine cheekbones. Panic bloomed in her chest. Can it see who I really am? Chatine hastily took a step back, out of the inspecteur’s reach, and yanked her hood back down. “My maman is expecting me home,” she said. “So, if you don’t mind, I’ll be going now.” “Of course,” the inspecteur replied. “Thank you, Inspecteur. Vive Laterre.” As Chatine turned to leave, she felt her entire body collapse with relief. She had done it. She had fooled his sensors. She was a better liar than even she had come to believe. “I’ll just need to check your pockets first.” Chatine froze. She quickly surveyed her surroundings. She spotted five Policier droids in her vicinity. More than usually roamed the Marsh, due to the annual Ascension ceremony today. The droids—or bashers as they were referred to around here—stood at almost twice the size of an average man and their slate-gray exoskeletons crunched and whirred as they walked. Chatine wasn’t afraid of them, though. She’d escaped Policier droids plenty of times. They were fast and stronger than ten men, but they still had their limitations. For instance, they couldn’t climb. Careful not to move her head, Chatine glanced up, thanking her lucky Sols that there was an old pipe running directly over her head. She refused to get flown off to Bastille. A neighbor was currently serving three years for stealing a measly sac of turnips. A First World relic lifted off a Second Estater? She’d be looking at ten years minimum. And hardly anyone lived that long on the moon. She slowly spun back around to face Limier. “Of course, Inspecteur. I have nothing to hide.” Flashing another smile, Chatine stuffed her hand into her pocket and felt the medallion cool and smooth against her skin. The inspecteur once again reached a hand in her direction. Then, before he could react, Chatine hurled the apricot the monsieur had given her straight at the inspecteur’s face. His circuitry sparked as his brain tried to make sense of the incoming object. Chatine bolted, scrambling onto a table full of fabric scraps before leaping toward the pipe. For a second, she was flying, soaring above the inspecteur, the shoppers in the Marsh, and the Policier droids who were just starting to take notice of the disturbance. As she caught the pipe, she used her momentum to circle her legs around until she was straddling the rusty, metal pole. “Paralyze him!” Inspecteur Limier shouted to his droids, peering up at Chatine. His circuitry was going haywire, like someone had hacked the signal. “Now!” The bashers maneuvered their bulky PermaSteel bodies around one another, assembling into attack formation. Chatine knew she had to move quickly. One rayonette pulse she could dodge, but five? That would be rough. The pipe was too narrow to walk on, so Chatine shimmied across it on her stomach, weighing her options. The north exit was out of the question. It backed up to the Vallonay Policier Precinct, where she would certainly run into more droids. There was a catwalk about three mètres ahead of her. If she could reach it without getting shot, she could crawl the rest of the way to the east exit, back near Madame Dufour’s stall. A split second later, she felt the heat of the first rayonette pulse whizz by the side of her face. She sucked in a sharp breath and shimmied faster. A second droid took aim below her, its shot perfectly aligned at her left knee. She braced herself for the impact. But just then, a group of drunk exploit workers stumbled through the fray, arguing about who among them had the most Ascension points stored up. One of them crashed right into the droid, and the pulse barely missed her leg. “Oh, excuse me, Monsieur,” the drunk worker slurred to the droid, bowing ceremoniously. His friends broke out into hoots of laughter while Chatine took the opportunity to slide the rest of the way across the rusted pipe. Thank the Sols for strong weed wine, she thought as she launched herself toward the catwalk. She caught the railing with both hands just as a third pulse was fired from below. This one glanced her left shoulder. It wasn’t a direct hit, but it was enough. The pain was instant. Like someone had scraped her skin with a blazing-hot knife. She bit her lip to keep from crying out. The sound would only improve the droids’ aim. Within seconds, her left arm started to lose sensation from the paralyzeur now pumping through her blood. She scrambled to swing her feet up over the ledge of the walkway but was unsuccessful. Now she was just dangling there, her feet paddling against the air. The droids shoved people aside as they zeroed in on her location. More rayonette pulses tore past her, rippling and bending the air. It was only a matter of time before another one found its target. Chatine knew she needed a distraction. She spotted a crate packed with chickens directly in front of her. She shook out her left arm, trying to chase away the numbness that was spreading toward her fingers, but it was no use. The paralyzeur was quickly working its way through her muscles. Favoring her right hand, she gripped the railing as tightly as she could and pumped her legs until she’d built up enough momentum to reach the crate. She arched her body and kicked her legs out hard. The crate crashed to the ground and busted open. The chickens squawked and tried to fly away, but their useless wings barely allowed them to get off the ground. The commotion was enough, though. People were screaming, the stall owner was desperately trying to wrangle the loose birds, and the Policier droids fought to barrel through it all. But their efforts only managed to rile up the birds even more. They fluttered about, scraping people with their sharp claws. The droids started firing with abandon. But with all the chaos below, their aim was poor. They hit more chickens than anything else. The birds absorbed the stun of the rayonettes and fell limp to the ground. They wouldn’t be able to move again for a few hours. With the droids distracted, Chatine was finally able to pull herself onto the catwalk and crawl, one-handed, across the rusty, metal plank before shimmying down a support beam next to Madame Dufour’s stall. She glanced back to see the bashers still trying to push their way through the crowd to reach her. But with the number of people in the Marsh today and the riled-up chickens, it wasn’t an easy task. Madame Dufour glared at Chatine, her wrinkled arms folded across her chest. “Like father, like son,” she said, making a tsk sound with her teeth. “Mark my words, boy, you’ll be rotting on the moon before the end of this year.” Chatine flashed her a goading grin before swiping a loaf of chou bread from one of Madame Dufour’s crates and darting toward the exit. “Arrête!” The old woman’s command sounded like a croak. “Get back here, you wretched croc!” “Thanks for breakfast!” Chatine called back in a singsong voice. And then, before the droids could track her or Madame Dufour could catch her, Chatine was gone. Once she’d put a good distance between herself and the marketplace, she slowed to a walk and massaged her dead arm with the opposite hand. It wasn’t the first time she’d been shot by a rayonette. And it probably wouldn’t be the last. The sensation would return soon enough. Chatine reached into her pocket and pulled out the pendant she had lifted from the Second Estater. She sucked off the sweet apricot juice and held the medallion in her open palm, studying it. For the first time, Chatine noticed the ornate golden Sol carved into the surface. It was unlike any of the three Sols that hung in the sky of the System Divine. This was a First World Sol. Its brilliant, fiery rays flared out to the edge of the medallion. Chatine reverently clasped the pendant around her neck, a rare genuine smile creeping across her face. She hadn’t seen the light of a Sol in nine years.
