Happy 610 to me!
Tumblr media
And to celebrateeeeee:
For the Month of April, and maybe longer, I will be Going On Hiatus (Yes again), I will log back in every other Friday to make an update post on myself and my WIPs. I will not be checking my notes, asks, or Notifications until I'm back for good.
You can contact me at Discord @ ellia_west if you like! Just tell me your Tumblr Username or else I might block you. But I will not be on Tumblr, and when I am, Let's just say I'll make my presence known. <3 [I will be on for about an Hour after I post this, 3/28/2025]
For now,
(I left a message for all the Moots I remember off the top of my head)
-
@sunflowerrosy You're my best friend and ILYSM, Everything you've said and done to help me. You've been there no matter what and you're always so kind and patient. You're so brilliant and determined and such a lovely person to talk to and be around no matter what. Your WIPs are some of my favorite things I've ever read and talked about and helped with and I hope we never stop being friends, and I thank God for us meeting. You've been so Fun to Watch ATLA with, I look forward to talking to you when I get the chance, and Yapping about our WIPs together is one of my favorite things, the games, the Characters, your personality, and the random talking about mundane life. I'm praying for you and I hope one day I can give you a hug myself.
@homelessnerd You've been here a while and through it all you're pointing me back to God, telling me the things I sometimes don't want to hear, and making sure I know how much he loves me, recommending me shows and doing your best to make time for me even though I don't deserve it. You may not be here as often as some of my other friends, but I smile whenever I see your messages and I love talking to you <3 I thank God that he let me meet you and I thank you for pushing me back to him when I didn't want to.
@carb0n-m0n0xide I've never had a friend who made me laugh so hard, Your absolutely wacky (In a good way) stuff always puts a smile on my face, and I love seeing and listening to you. Your messages and the typos and every thank you and Shouted brainstorming session adds a wonderful level of chaos to my life I never knew I needed. But you somehow also always know what to say when I feel down and I honestly couldn't wish for many better friends (Go. To. Bed.) Also, it's unfair. Why do you get all the skill? Share. Pls. /j (Thank you Jesus for letting me Meet Carbon, she's brightened my days so much even if she doesn't know it)
@theweirdbox123 You're a new friend, and I almost didn't talk to you because I thought you wouldn't want to talk to me, But you've been one of the most fun and supportive people to me, You might not see it now, But you being open about being sensitive, despite you disliking, has given me the courage and the feeling to open myself back up to my sensitive side and If I'm honest, I think I learned how to cry again because of you, and I'm so, so glad to have somebody like me who's near me and kind enough to listen and help.
@supercimi I know you're nervous and you apologize a lot because you think you hurt my feelings, But honestly in all my life until recently, I have never had someone who I felt cared about my feelings as much as you do. Please don't be scared to speak your mind, I love listening to you, your writing is phenomenal and I can't wait to see you again whenever you come back online. I don't mind waiting, and I Wish I could give you the biggest hug. You'll never know how much your words mean to me.
@thewritingautisticat I don't know you very well but honestly, Whenever I see you in my notes, It makes me happy, I honestly can't wait to see where your stories go, and I'd honestly love to interact more some day, I admire you and all of your projects, and I wish you the best of luck!
@thebookishkiwi Girlie, I don't honestly even know what to say. I see your projects and I don't respond bc 1, Honestly I'm a little jealous of your skills, and 2, I may be busy, but I do HONESTLY really love your characters. I'm honestly flattered whenever I see you in my notes it makes me smile like an idiot, especially when I see your replies or reblogs and I honestly don't even know what to say. I admire your skills and I strive to one day write like you do (I'm getting lost in the sauce with the goddess prophecy, I'm lurking in the shadows bc life is a little busy, but when summer comes around, I'm gonna... *snatches all your writing and runs away with it*)
@vesanal Thank you. For everything. You're such a brilliant friend and a brilliant person. Everything you do, your interactions, how little I DO see them, and Your help, Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate you and all the help you've given me, and I don't think I would be where I am without it, Lol.
@write-with-will Man, You. YOU. YOUUUU. YOUR COMMENTS, YOUR EVERYTHING, I LOVE YOU(/p) AND YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEEDBACK AND REBLOGS AND WORDS ON EVERYTHING, BUT SPECIFICALLY WILD AND KHENAN. YOU'RE SO KIND DESPITE HOW LITTLE WE INTERACT OUTSIDE OF THAT, BUT I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH. AURGHHHGHGHG, I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK ON ALL YOUR PROJECTS
@corinneglass Girlie, Idk what to say. Thank you. TwT. Your words mean so much, you're trying, your beautiful blog, your patience and everything. Just... everything...
@yolbert We don't interact much, and I know English isn't your first language, I just want you to know that whenever I see you in my notes, it makes me Unreasonably happy, and your reblogs are like I'm panning for gold in my notifs, Lol. Every time I see them on my Posts I feel so proud of myself, Like: They REBLOGGED? ME????
@darkandstormydolls I cannot even begin to tell you how much I admire how smart you are, with all your research and knowledge and your willingness to share it, and to offer me things sometimes, like the opportunity to be featured in something. Your notes and your interactions, they kinda remind me why I write, honestly.
@blargh-500 I don't know you at all, But I honestly really like seeing you in my notes, and your asks are always a surprise, and a welcome one! I'd honestly love to see you around more and get to know you better if I can.
@clever-naming-convention You're one of my oldest moots. Actually my third ever if I remember correctly, and I admire how forward and happy you are with your hyperfixations, even if we don't talk a lot and you may not be interested in my projects, you're still here, and I'm honestly so greatful for that. (Do you like sonic? If so, #sonic the slugcat)
@sm-writes-chaos I don't know you. But you're awesome. Your art is awesome. Your vibe is awesome. You share my obsession with Jak for literally no other reason than 'he has silly vibes' and I respect that. W friend.
@lunaeuphterrnal We don't talk much, and I don't know you much either but I honestly REALLY REALLY appreciate you and your reblogs and support of my WIP and I wish you the best of luck with yours even though I haven't got around to looking at it yet
@geminiagentgreen You're awesome. Keep doing what you do. Thank you Jesus for showing me this person and their blog. Thank you for spreading the word of God, for being so confident about it and inspiring me to take steps in my own faith, and for just... being there
@urnumber1star I love your WIP. I love you(/p). I don't say much but I AM lurking in the shadows. Torture Michael for me. And I don't care how evil he is, Give No one a cookie for me. Also if you have inspiration, write that fantasy. I have no doubt in my heart it will be magnificent.
I love you guys - (Sorry if I forgot you)

Hi, Kat here. I want to say I'm so sorry for your loss but I think you must have the blog URL wrong for their FF7 blog? I know anjiiru personally and while Skit is on hiatus she's very much alive. I would be okay with getting the word out in my small group but of course I need to know what Jor's FF7blog was. Again, I'm so sorry, and whether I knew them or not I send my condolences to you and yours.
Thank you for your condolences. I don't know how to work this application as i have never used it before, so everything you said about the url and such i have no clue what that means. Im sorry. If you need to you can walk me through it

So, Sinister Sons, right?
DC just throws that on the tail end of Green Lantern #4 solicit like it's nothing big that Peter Tomasi is returning from his hiatus to pen a (presumably) in-continuity story involving a new character named "Sinson," who probably is this little guy on the Lafuente variant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously, my first thought is that this must be a Super Sons project based on the talent behind the story and the fact that it's in the back of Jeremy Adams' new comic after he himself teased Jon and Damian returning to some kind of Rebirth norm in The Flash #797, but how so can't be determined by this solicit alone. Based on the huge widow's peak, I assume this kid is related to Sinestro. Then my mind began to drift back to the title: Sinister Sons. I've come to two potentialities.
First, perhaps this is continuing the story from The Flash #797, where the group of multiversal villains attempts an act of future revenge against the seven or eight heroes who thwarted them earlier from their perspective. I've taken this grouping of the five (Jai, Irie, Maxine, Jon, and Damian) plus whoever else may join them to get to seven (or eight) to be the Legacy League promised on the Flashpoint Beyond chalkboard. Going from there, the Sinister Sons may be their Legion of Doom. Sinson joined by characters like Heretic and Lor-Zod plus a few others to be a thorn in the side of the League.
Tumblr media
Second, going off of the two issues following that one, perhaps "Sinister Sons" is whatever collection of time-displaced younglings Granny Goodness as been collecting. If Sinson is the secret son of Sinestro, similar to Soranik Natu in Tomasi's earlier work Green Lantern Corps, maybe Granny also has a version of Jon Kent that ran away from Jor-El while they were in space that's different than the one he found on Earth-3. That would be fairly small potatoes compared to getting Robbie Long, Cerdian, and Mr. Terrific's unborn child out from the fabric of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is assuming my previous theory of two versions of Jon Kent from alternate, similar timelines coexisting after the events of Superman Reborn is a correct interpretation of the lore presented to us since Bendis left. That's also assuming these tweet updates from Tom Taylor are hinting at Sinister Sons, a book he isn't writing. Pretty big leap, I know. But MAYBE this is Peter Tomasi returning to writing Dick and Damian as they join forces with Jon Kent, age 17, to stop Granny Goodness and her army of misplaced progeny and rescue Jon Kent, age 12. Or maybe Jon (17) is going to find Jon (12) at the end of Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #6 in the Phantom Zone, having narrowly escaping Granny's clutches. Look, I don't know. I just want a Jon similar to who and how he was during Rebirth back.

SDCC 2023 Exclusive Dark Knights: Metal Dread Lantern Action Figure by McFarlane Toys x DC Comics
After a brief hiatus, DC Comics will have a booth at San Diego Comic-Con again this year! They will be having a number of big names signing at their booth – including Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane – and releasing some awesome SDCC 2023 exclusive variant covers.  They’re also teaming with Todd McFarlane and his McFarlane Toys to release this San Diego Comic-Con 2023 Exclusive Dark Knights: Metal Dread Lantern Action Figure! This 7” scale limited edition figure can be purchased at the DC Comics SDCC booth #4645. This incredibly detailed 7” scale figure based on DC Comics was designed with ultra articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing and play. Dread Lantern includes his Flame Sword and base, and also includes a collectible art card with character art on the front and certificate of authenticity on the back. Following the defeat of the Anti-Monitor, only one Earth remained! But which Earth? In one timeline, Earth-1’s Superman prevented Earth-2 Superman from going into final battle, but in the Dark Multiverse, it was Jor-El of Earth-2 who survived. When the powerful demon Surtur sought to destroy this new Earth, Green Lantern Alan Scott struck an unthinkable deal to protect his planet and its inhabitants. In exchange for Earth’s safety, Alan volunteered to serve as the demon’s herald. The former Green Lantern now guides Surtur and his armies to unknowing worlds, bringing Ragnarok to trillions upon trillions as the terrible Dread Lantern. http://dlvr.it/Ss4ZlX

Okay, thanks for letting me know that you didn't have the information since when you heard the band called tally hall created in 2005 and coming from the east of michingan, United States made up of Joseph Robert Hawley, Zubin Sedghi, Rob Cantor, Ross Federman and Andrew Horowitz which was characterized by its colorful ties of different colors. The band gave small shows and concerts in the city interpreting songs by other artists or even songs written by themselves until they debuted in 2005 with their album Marvin's marvelous mechanical museum containing 14 songs and 1 hidden song the album achieved considerable success which would put the band in the public eye gaining loyal fans and being invited to more shows and radio programs even reaching MTV. This would lead the band to continue creating music. Between the year 2007 to 2008 the band would sign with Atlantic records and they would produce an improved version of their first album now with a new cover art and 2 new bonus tracks, also to promote them they created the tally hall internet show; an internet show which would come out every week on their website and was about 10 minute episodes containing comedy sketches that the band did, some even followed a plot. There was a problem with Atlantic that led to their contract being canceled and the band couldn't release their new album which they had ready by that time, this forced the band to look for another record label but Quack! Media (their previous label) lost them. received with open arms again and in 2011 they would release the new album. Good and evil would be the name of the second album and would contain 14 songs, it was well received by the public, reaching the top of iTunes and once again gave the band notoriety. After releasing the album they would tour in promotion of it and when that tour ended, they announced that the band would be on hiatus. Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Ross... honey, my pookie bear. I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. The way you play a beat on the drums and strike fear into your enemies eyes. Your silky smooth touch around the drumstick, and that gorgeous cross-sticking. I would do anything for you. I wish it were possible to freeze time so I would never have to watch you stop drumming. You had a rough time in the band, but you never gave up hope. You are even amazing off the stage, you're a great husband and father, sometimes I even call you dad. I forvever dread and weep, thinking of the day you will one day stop drumming. I would sacrifice my own life it were the only thing that could put a smile on your beautiful face. You have given me so much joy, and heartbreak over the years. I remember when you first left Tally Hall and its like my heart got broken into a million pieces. But a tear still fell from my right eye when I watched you give an important talk about proteins, because deep down, my glorious king deserved it. I just wanted you to return home. Then allas, you did, my sweet baby boy came back and I rejoiced. 2023 was a hard year for us baby, but in 2024 you made history happen. You came back from your science job to perform with Andrew, I was crying, bawling even, and I heard my glorious king exclaim these words “Hey”. Not only have you changed the game of Science, Tally hall and the world forever, but you've eternally changed my world. And now you're getting older, but still the goat, my goat. I love you pookie bear, my glorious king, Ross Federman☺️🩶🫶🏻

Superman and Lois' new ep?
Anonymous asked: S&L finally came back from the hiatus what did you think of the new episode?
Shame but hardly shocking the ratings took a major beating with this - hey, even with the surrounding circumstances, maybe doing things so that you drop 5 episodes of your new show and then vanish for months wasn't the hottest idea. Still, solid episode, even if some time away has allowed me to more fully settle in with this really being an 'elevated', refined version of the standard CW superhero stuff rather than something fundamentally different. I'm totally fine with that, especially with the other Superman stuff in the works, it just is what it is (though of course I'd still root for it being moved to HBO Max with a new showrunner).
* Holy shit that train rescue. This may not have the kind of budget the pilot did but they're still making the most of what they've got, and what they've got is still leagues above its immediate contemporaries; I'm really glad the philosophy seems to be that if people are tuning in for a Superman show but 90% of it is a family drama, then those Superman bits better POP.
* Glad the show continues with Lois and Clark both being at most exasperated about her being in unbelievable life-threatening peril on a regular basis because she's Lois Lane and that's how her life works. Related note, liked her barely even questioning a fellow reporter carrying around a laser capable of cutting through solid rock, because hey, it's the DCU. And did I hear right that he said X-Kryptonite is the 'first' Kryptonite?
* The heat vision in the hand bit was a rough adaptation of that scene early in Tomasi/Gleason's run, right? Unsurprisingly it was a lot better here, and also major evidence that Jor's power is considerably more than initially assumed since he's capable of hurting Clark.
Tumblr media
* Speaking of heat vision, they finally did their inevitable scary glowy eyes Superman moment, and it was about as good as such a thing can be - a more than fair response to taking serious injuries protecting a kid against preemptive violence, and explicitly in lines with the larger themes of the episode.
* So Clark’s done with Sam, right?
* I had to rewatch a scene, I thought Jon was reacting with super-speed to catch Jor's punch and it was supposed to subtly be A Moment; I could still see him developing his powers much sooner rather than later now so he doesn't wear the sling for the rest of the season, unless there's a timeskip. Either way though they are really laying it on this kid and since Helbing mentioned in an interview they're not going to have him break bad in response, I'm not clear at all what's in mind for him, and not in a good way. A friend of mine who otherwise enjoys the show is almost wholly convinced that the two sons conceit was the product of WB nixing a single-son show where Jonathan would be written as Jordan is because higher-ups don't want that being how the idea of the super son is introduced in a big way, so they're having a 'wholesome' son in the existing vein to fill that requirement while doing the real story with the new kid, leading to Jon being basically ancillary support for Jor. I can honestly see it, and while I would still enjoy the show if that's the case, I really hope that even if it's true and that's how this setup started that it evolves, because Elsass is good in the part and it'd suck to leave such a principal aspect of the show just dangling. Good place to start might be delving into how he's starting to enable his brother as much as support him, and that Lois & Jon ‘team-up’ episode coming up might be a do-or-die moment.

Today we remember the passing of Marlon Brando who Died: July 1, 2004 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California
Marlon Brando Jr. (April 3, 1924 – July 1, 2004) was an American actor and film director with a career spanning 60 years, during which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice. He is regarded as arguably the greatest and most influential actor in 20th-century film. Brando was also an activist for many causes, notably the civil rights movement and various Native American movements. Having studied with Stella Adler in the 1940s, he is credited with being one of the first actors to bring the Stanislavski system of acting and method acting, derived from the Stanislavski system, to mainstream audiences.
He initially gained acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for reprising the role of Stanley Kowalski in the 1951 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play A Streetcar Named Desire, a role that he originated successfully on Broadway. He received further praise, and an Academy Award, for his performance as Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront, and his portrayal of the rebellious motorcycle gang leader Johnny Strabler in The Wild One proved to be a lasting image in popular culture. Brando received Academy Award nominations for playing Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata! (1952); Mark Antony in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1953 film adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar; and Air Force Major Lloyd Gruver in Sayonara (1957), an adaptation of James Michener's 1954 novel.
The 1960s saw Brando's career take a commercial and critical downturn. He directed and starred in the cult western One-Eyed Jacks, a critical and commercial flop, after which he delivered a series of notable box-office failures, beginning with Mutiny on the Bounty (1962). After ten years of underachieving, he agreed to do a screen test as Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972). He got the part and subsequently won his second Academy Award in a performance critics consider among his greatest. He refused the award due to mistreatment and misportrayal of Native Americans by Hollywood. The Godfather was one of the most commercially successful films of all time, and alongside his Oscar-nominated performance in Last Tango in Paris, Brando reestablished himself in the ranks of top box-office stars.
After a hiatus in the early 1970s, Brando was generally content with being a highly paid character actor in supporting roles, such as Jor-El in Superman (1978), as Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979), and in The Formula (1980), before taking a nine-year break from film. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Brando was paid a record $3.7 million ($16 million in inflation-adjusted dollars) and 11.75% of the gross profits for 13 days' work on Superman.
Brando was ranked by the American Film Institute as the fourth-greatest movie star among male movie stars whose screen debuts occurred in or before 1950. He was one of only six actors named in 1999 by Time magazine in its list of the 100 Most Important People of the Century. In this list, Time also designated Brando as the "Actor of the Century."
On July 1, 2004, Brando died of respiratory failure from pulmonary fibrosis with congestive heart failure at the UCLA Medical Center. The cause of death was initially withheld, with his lawyer citing privacy concerns. He also suffered from diabetes and liver cancer. Shortly before his death and despite needing an oxygen mask to breathe, he recorded his voice to appear in The Godfather: The Game, once again as Don Vito Corleone. However, Brando recorded only one line due to his health, and an impersonator was hired to finish his lines. His single recorded line was included within the final game as a tribute to the actor. Some additional lines from his character were directly lifted from the film. Karl Malden—Brando's co-star in three films, A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, and One-Eyed Jacks—spoke in a documentary accompanying the DVD of A Streetcar Named Desire about a phone call he received from Brando shortly before Brando's death. A distressed Brando told Malden he kept falling over. Malden wanted to come over, but Brando put him off, telling him there was no point. Three weeks later, Brando was dead. Shortly before his death, he had apparently refused permission for tubes carrying oxygen to be inserted into his lungs, which, he was told, was the only way to prolong his life.
Brando was cremated, and his ashes were put in with those of his good friend Wally Cox and another longtime friend, Sam Gilman. They were then scattered partly in Tahiti and partly in Death Valley. In 2007, a 165-minute biopic of Brando for Turner Classic Movies, Brando: The Documentary, produced by Mike Medavoy (the executor of Brando's will), was released.

NOS Primavera Sound 2019: printable timetables, our preview and playlist
It doesn’t matter how conservative or liberal you are: people are naturally resistant to change, especially if the previous form of what’s changing was so dear to them. We get it: “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Judging by the tone and content of most comments we can find online about this year’s Primavera lineup, both in Porto and Barcelona, folks ain’t happy about “the new normal”. Yes, some of the biggest pop artists in the planet have claimed most of the spots with the big font in it. Yes, there’s a shortage of loud, extreme music we often found at the long gone ATP stage, and every year there are less and less historical, cult indie rock bands reforming for a Primavera performance. But, other than that - tiny specks on a lineup of over 120 bands in Barcelona and over 60 in Porto - has it really changed that much? Is the Primavera DNA gone? (Was there really a “Primavera DNA” to begin with?)
We don’t think so. In this year's preview of NOS Primavera Sound, we’re looking back on our ten years of going to Primavera festivals (since our debut in Barcelona 2009, we only missed it in 2011). We identify five pillars of what we think makes a typical Primavera lineup - and reflect on what’s new and what’s missing. In the end, we can say we’re actually more excited for this years’ edition than we’ve been in the past three or four years.
Our preview playlist (which you can find below) features 33 artists, and we tried our best not to include the very obvious ones.

The historical indie rock bunch (and a couple of reunions)
This lineup has got Built to Spill performing “Keep it Like a Secret” (Thursday, 19:50). It’s automatically good just for that reason, even if it was a late addition after a cancellation. It’s got the first ever Guided by Voices performance in the Iberian Peninsula (Saturday, 20:45) and a rare appearance by cult hero Liz Phair (Friday, 22:00). It’s got Low still fresh out of their most lauded album release of the past fourteen years (Saturday, 23:20). What about reunions? We get it, everyone expects so much of a festival where bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive or Pavement have first performed after long periods of retirement. Stereolab (Thursday, 23:20) were one of the most inventive, genre-defining and influential bands of the 90s and return to the stage after a ten year hiatus, and the Basque band Lisabö (Friday, 19:15), who has released in 2018 their first album in eight years, was once one of the most powerful post-rock/hardcore bands in Europe. And, you know... the real reason why we never, ever miss a single NOS Primavera Sound edition is the fact that it’s the most likely place in Europe to be able to witness a rare sighting of the best live band in rock music. Let’s all raise a toast to Shellac (Friday, 21:00). If they weren’t in the lineup, yes, we would think Primavera is gone. But, as long as Albini, Trainer and Weston are with us, can we really say the festival is not what it used to be?
Tumblr media
Up-and-coming indie singer-songwriters
Some of them we’ve seen and talked extensively before on our NOS Primavera Sound and Vodafone Paredes de Coura previews. Courtney Barnett (Friday, 19:50) played for a half-empty tent before we all hit the jackpot with her debut LP and was one of our biggest highlights of that year. Lucy Dacus (Saturday, 18:50) and Big Thief (Saturday, 19:15) played two of our favorite shows at last year’s Vodafone Paredes de Coura. They’re both competing for our attention this year, along with Tomberlin (Saturday, 19:00), who is also playing in the same time slot and appeals to the same fanbase, which makes us a bit sad to miss the others. Even if we think this was a scheduling mistake, it’s still an indicator of how good this lineup is. And you’ve still got Snail Mail (Saturday, 20:30), hopefully with a full band, when you’re done with the gig of your choice. Just before Barnett on Friday we’ve got two songwriters who released two of the most exciting albums of 2019 so far. We have missed Aldous Harding (Friday, 17:45) every time we had the chance to see her (either due to cancellations or her being placed in tiny venues in festivals) and we’ll try not to fuck it up this time around. We'll probably skip Nilüfer Yanya (Friday, 18:50) since we’ve seen her play with her band in a tiny anarchist venue less than a month ago, but you shouldn’t. And, if you don’t care about Jarvis Cocker (sacrilege) don’t miss the only male songwriter in this list: the Canadian songwriter MorMor (Thursday, 21:25) has released a superb EP earlier this month.

Unique, experimental-ish contemporary artists
There’s always space on a Primavera lineup for some of the best performers we’ve been seeing in the past few years that don’t really fit in any big boxes. Synth-heavy Let’s Eat Grandma (Thursday, 23:45) is not only the best band name in the lineup, it’s one of the most exciting new acts coming out of England in the past few years. Spoken word queen Kate Tempest (Saturday, 22:30) is debuting her new album ahead of its release later in June and shall compete for your attention with Tirzah (Saturday, 22:00) and Rosalía (Saturday, 22:10), the hottest artist out of Spain in God knows how long. Later on, Swedish singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry (Saturday, 23:30) presents her much lauded recent LP Broken Politics. Experimental rock outfit Jambinai **(Friday, 18:00) are known for using traditional folk Korean instruments to produce some of the sharpest sounding post-rock these days, while Shabaka Hutchings brings four drummers to his Sons of Kemet XL** (Friday, 20:20) jazztravaganza.
Tumblr media
Nobody’s taking your guitars away
Playing a bit softer or harder, we’ve already listed tons of guitar music above. Yes, there’s less heavy music than a few years ago, but was that really ever a defining quality of a Primavera lineup? Still, besides all the indie rock bands we mentioned before there are a few more options for guitar-heavy partying, from returning experimental-ish hardcore behemoths Fucked Up (Friday, 22:15) to upcoming Aussie punk rockers Amyl and the Sniffers (Saturday, 21:00). Although very different from each other, Hop Along (Saturday, 17:45) and Viagra Boys (Saturday, 18:00) will compete for your attention in the beginning of the last day of the festival.
Tumblr media
The indie/alternative big guns
You wouldn’t set up a 30,000 capacity festival where the headliners are six indie singer-songwriters with two records under their belt since 2016, right? We know we wouldn’t even though that’s basically half of what we listen to. Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker is back with his new project JARV IS (Thursday, 21:00), which is apparently “primarily a live experience”, mostly limited to festivals. We don’t know what to expect and we don’t want to read about it beforehand. Can we still be surprised sometimes, is that too much to ask? It’s been over a decade since we last were excited about anything related to Interpol **(Friday, 23:45), but reports from Barcelona and All Points East tell us at least 2/3 of the setlist is composed of Antics and Turn On the Bright Lights songs, so there’s that. Later that night, **James Blake (Friday, 01:00) is back with a new album that we didn’t care to listen to, but we thought his past two concerts we saw in festivals were way more interesting than his records, so we’ll probably give him a shot. On Saturday we witness a rare European show by Jorge Ben Jor (Saturday 19:50), the MPB giant who rarely performs outside Brazil, before the neo soul queen Erykah Badu (Saturday, 00:30) takes the stage as the closing big act of the festival.
Tumblr media
The new normal
Yes, something changed at NOS Primavera Sound over the past couple of years. But did it change for worse? This was a festival that, despite running until the early hours of the morning, lacked an electronic dance music programme that was as consistent as its daylight and prime-time programme. This has changed last year with the introduction of new stage Bits, and has considerably improved this years when it comes to DJs. Yaeji (Thursday, 03:00) has released some of the most non-obvious house hits since 2017. Together with Peggy Gou **(Thursday, 01:30), **Helena Hauff (Friday, 04:30), SOPHIE (Friday, 02:30) and JASSS (Friday, 00:00), the Korean-American producer and DJ is the flagbearer of an experimental, female-fronted, fresh sounding clubbing scene that not so long ago was pretty much nonexistent in Primavera. Producer Yves Tumor (Saturday, 01:00) brings another side of the same scene with his full band; Modeselektor (Saturday, 23:45) are hardly newcomers and have performed in countless editions of Primavera, both as Modeselektor and Moderat.
Tumblr media
But maybe that’s not the addition of a good clubbing programme with a stage dedicated to clubbers that’s really bothering a seemingly substantial part of Primavera’s typical festival goers. Maybe it’s the fact that most of the big slots in the lineup - even though those represent only 10% of the festival’s lineup - are occupied by big, guitarless, not-really-indie acts. But can we really rule them out and say they’re not “Primavera artists” based on their (lack of) artistic merit? Of course not. It’s been seven years since Solange (Thursday, 00:30) has released “Losing You” and stopped being referred to as simply “Beyoncé’s younger sister”; we are yet to find a bad review for her latest two albums. Hip-hop ends up being underrepresented this year, compared to past editions, with the likes of Danny Brown (22:20), Tommy Cash (23:25) and Allen Halloween (22:15) all competing for your attention Thursday night, and newcomer ProfJam (Friday, 17:00) getting an extra early slot the next day. But what’s really grinding people’s gears is the presence of one of the most important artists in the world today. Colombian J Balvin (Friday, 22:15) is one of the most important regaetón singers today, and, through his many collaborations with English-speaking artists, played an instrumental role as the genre definitely took over Western audiences and became the most popular genre of pop music worldwide, toppling the long dominance of hip hop, R&B and EDM. Literally every song on his setlist is a major hit. All killer, no filler. Can you really say the same about any other artist in the lineup (except Shellac, of course)? Name one.
Our playlist this year has 66 songs by 33 artists. We couldn’t make it shorter, it’s still impossible to see all those artists, and we could definitely add some more. Do you still think this is a subpar lineup? It’s not.

off the rack #1185
Monday, October 30, 2017
Today's a perfect day to sit inside and read what with all the rain we're having here in Ottawa. I hope it lets up by tomorrow evening for the trick or treaters.
I numbered last week's off the rack #1186 and skipped one by mistake. Keen eyed reader Tom noticed and let me know, so this here is #1185. I've got to say that I was very impressed with the art in all of the comic books that I read for this column.
Hulk #11 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Bachan (art) Frederico Blee (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). The cartoony art suits this cartoony story where Jen breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the reader. It's kind of a neat feature that John Byrne used to do back in the day but I hope Mariko doesn't use it too often. This issue was fun for having it in there though. It also hints at a new threat to Jennifer and her gray alter ego. I love the LBD and pearls that artist John Tyler Christopher put Jen in on the cover.
Punisher: The Platoon #2 - Garth Ennis (writer) Goran Parlov (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Rob Steen (letters). I can't imagine what it would be like to fight in a war. This comic book showed me in explicit detail. I know we can all be reduced to our baser instincts when our lives are threatened. I hope my life or the lives of the ones I love are never threatened.
Wonder Woman #33 - James Robinson (writer) Emanuela Lupacchino (pencils) Ray McCarthy (inks) Romulo Fajardo Jr. (colours). I don't know who lettered this issue. They sure had a lot of work with 'Lil Darkseid getting older and ordering his murderous daughter Grail around. Wonder Woman only appears in this issue as images on a TV screen. I suppose that was to let fans know that they are actually reading a Wonder Woman comic book. That's a low opinion of the intelligence of their fan base. I feel a little insulted. If it wasn't for Ema's art, I'd consider benching this book.
Saga #48 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Fiona Staples (art & colours) Fonografiks (letters). Hazel and Sir Robot's son are much older now. This is the issue before their regularly scheduled hiatus. I'm glad it didn't end in a cliffhanger but I still can't wait until February when the next issue hits the racks.
Amazing Spider-Man #790 - Dan Slott & Christos Gage (writers) Stuart Immonen (pencils) Wade von Grawbadger (inks) Marte Gracia (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Sometimes the hardest thing to do is the right thing. Peter is trying his best but when the fall of Parker Industries threatens to fell the Baxter Building it's up to an unlikely team up to prevent disaster. This issue spells out the plight of Peter Parker very well.
Batman: The Merciless #1 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Francis Manapul (art & colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). It's Wonder Woman's turn to get mashed up with Batman. There is a neat twist about the death of the Earth-12 Diana that created the Merciless. That made this comic book worth reading.
Wild Storm #8 - Warren Ellis (writer) John Davis-Hunt (art) Steve Buccellato (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). Brace yourself to meet a whole new slew of characters as this story expands. It was cool for me to see these familiar names re-imagined by Warren and John.
All-New Wolverine #26 - Tom Taylor (writer) Juann Cabal (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). All you folks not reading this book, you don't know what you're missing. Laura and Daken meet face to face and the mystery of why Daken was being tortured is revealed. Juann's art is so nice to look at.
Action Comics #990 - Dan Jurgens (writer & breakdown art) Viktor Bogdanovic (pencils) Viktor Bogdanovic, Trevor Scott & Scott Hanna (inks) Mike Spicer (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). It looks like grandpa Jor-El has brainwashed young Jon in part 4 of "The Oz Effect". I keep wondering what the big threat is that's coming.
Weapon X #10 - Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente (writer) Marc Borstel & Ibraim Roberson (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Hulkverine meets his step-mom and she is one nasty witch. I saw some hope there for the big gray galoot when he didn't kill on command but Doctor Alba figured out a workaround. It means it's uh-oh time for the good guys again. The art in this issue is wonderful.
Detective Comics #967 - James Tynion IV (writer) Alvaro Martinez (pencils) Raul Fernandez (inks) Tomeu Morey & Jean Francois Beaulieu (colours) Sal Cipriano (letters). Part 3 of "A Lonely Place of Living" features the return of young Tim Drake/Red Robin. I'm more interested in what old Tim Drake/Batman is going to do in this timeline.
