Let's put aside the worthy lyrics that turn this little ditty into an issues song with a rather big 'do you get the message' stick, because Serge Gainsbourg's third song at Eurovision is, frankly, a bit of a mess.

It's trying to sound French with the accordion in the background... it's trying to sound modern and nineties with the synthesisers... it;s trying to be all tribal and Gracelands with the drums....

Yet it worked. I'm not going to argue with the scoreboard that saw the judges award this second place, nor would I every say the French record buying public got this wrong, but I think (a) the jury was blinded by Gainsbourgh and (b) nobody outside of France bought this.

How about it's a successful mess, and I'll quietly move on?
