"JO KOY Talks About His SISTERS 😂 #shorts"
Sometimes I think about how all it took, for my family to not have all the reported problems of a stereotypical Asian family, was for a little gender role flexibility. My dad never encouraged any toxic masculine habits, because his mom defied gender roles too---back when it was waaaaaay harder for women to do that. (She was an army soldier/officer/spy in WW2. All 200 of the big macho guys and girls under her command were very reverent---scared of her.) Because my grandma didn't confine herself to "traditional feminine" roles, my father didn't either.
He'd tell me about growing up as a kid that mostly hung out with women, who taught him sewing, playing with dolls, and all types of "feminine" stuff. When he and my mom got married, HE taught HER how to cook. He really wanted to be a "stay at home dad" too---back when that was UNHEARD of---but he just happened to have a better salary than my mom. (And they both believed 1 parent should stay with the kids. A shame, because my mom was much more suited to business and work culture.)
But he never pushed any toxic gender policing onto me or any of my siblings. In fact, sometimes he'd laugh about how if we siblings grew up in his home country, they'd think we were weridos, because my brother is the one who loves to cook so much that he made it his career, my sister is the one who likes to work on cars, and me, the other daughter, is the one doing all the carpentry and always borrowing his tools.
So when other Asians, even of the same ethnicity as me, talk about their common cultural experiences, I often don't understand the toxic family dynamics part. My dad always encouraged us to grow towards autonomy without any of that toxic "tough love" nonsense. And he'd always support us when we stood up for ourselves, even against my mom or him. But I guess being someone whose family sent him away to America, because he kept repeatedly almost getting himself killed by protesting against a dictator, he was never the type to let my mom get away with her authoritarian parenting style. And I could tell sometimes that she really wanted to just be authoritarian with us. But my dad always shut that shit down immediately.
My point is, that sometimes I don't relate to my fellow Asians, but sometimes I feel lucky about it. Thanks, Dad. ^_^ (Because---dang! The comments on this video are scary! People really treat their daughters this way? And only their daughters??????? JFC!)

Revisting Yokohama
When I arrived back at the hostel with my box of laundry detergent there was another guy staring at the washing machine intently which annoyed me because I assumed that he would be doing laundry and I'd be waiting all night to get mine done. Eventually he left without doing anything so I just jumped up and put my stuff in to get it started and put me first in line for the dryer! I sat and relaxed while on my laptop as I waited for the laundry to finish so I could fold everything up. Being exhausted was great because I slept soundly but I was still no match for these annoying people that decided to wake up at 4am to pack up, rustle around, talk to each other, and finally depart. I am always amazed when I come across such inconsiderate Japanese people, they are really rare! But this hostel seems to attract them as on my last stay I was also disturbed by annoying people in the wee hours of the morning.
I woke up at 8.30am and had a coffee and French toast breakfast in the hostel cafe while watching a tiny dog get its photo taken at a table outside. Next I walked to the harbour for a look but it was cloudly and even a little bit rainy. As it was nearby, I also went for a walk around Yamashita Park. I had to cut one trail short as it was roped off due to the presence of Japanese hornets. When I stepped closer to take a photo of the hornet warning sign, one flew at me and it freaked me out so much when I saw the size of it! It was honestly about 10cm long - for a wasp that is insane! I tried to film it or get a photo but without getting close it was difficult - they're also really aggressive so I did not want to start anything with the hive! There was a guy feeding some koi fish as I walked towards the Motomachi district, and immediately upon setting foot on the "high street" a woman walked past me with her pet meerkat on a tiny leash. I was shocked and had to have a little sit down to reflect, and also watch all the dogs out for their walkies. There were loads of nice shops, a lot of designer clothes and jewellery, but also some good souvenir shops where I picked up a shiba inu luggage tag and a few Tokyo Olympics souvenir pens on sale. I also bought a small box of 6 chocolates to share with Tomoko and Yuki when I meet them in Tokyo tomorrow - they were shaped like little flames (or maybe little ice creams I don't know), the ladies in the shop were so friendly and nice, plus they gave me a few cookies for free.
After walking around Motomachi for a while and checking out all the shops there I went to get a coffee at Cafe Elliott Avenue. This cafe was already on my list but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had drawn influence from Seattle's coffee scene. The cafe owner had previously lived in Seattle it seemed, and he chatted with me about the cafes I should try there since I mentioned I was heading there in a few days. The coffee was really good, but unfortunately it was takeaway only due to COVID so I had to sit in the park on a bench while I finished it. I stopped off back at the hostel to drop off my shopping and saw that Chinatown happened to be finally bustling and energetic. Since I had only ever seen it totally dead quiet, I was eager to get out amongst the crowds and experience it while being open and full of people. I bought a braised pork bun with a panda face that was delicious, and also picked up a few souvenir treats to send home. Since I still had a bit of time left of an evening I walked out to the Red Brick Warehouses to browse the shops where I bought a cat lunch bag and other treats for Jo, and also picked up a malasada donut from Leonard's at the Hawaiian themed foodcourt. All in all, another fun day spent in Yokohama but once again a single day wasn't really enough!

Laughter
“That’s it, laughter! It’s the key to everything! It’s the way to solve all the sadness in the world.” - Bo Burnham
Comedy is defined to be a professional entertainment, intended to make an audience laugh. One kind of comedy is stand-up comedy which is performed live in front of an audience. Comedians like Bo Burnham and Jo Koy both gather a large audience in stand-up comedy because of their style in performing, discussion of topics, and audience interaction.
Stand-up comedy is a hard job to take and most aspiring comedians try to do acts that would make a mark and help their audience remember them. Most comedians perform just like Jo Koy which is basically just story telling; However, Bo Burnham is a great example of a comedian that goes beyond what is expected of him because he not only tells his viewers random comedic stories, but he also sings his stories to keep his audience entertained. He mixes in performances with his story-telling so his audience would not feel bored during the show.
Another way comedians get the attention of their viewers is by choosing the right topics to discuss. In Jo Koy’s performance at “Jo Koy: Live from Seattle,” he mentions racism which Bo Burnham also discusses in his show, “Make Happy.” The topic of racism is a common issue that is relevant to everyone at the moment and discussing other issues like this, even in a comedic way, would make people more aware of them which is a good thing.
A comedian’s interaction with his audience is important as well. This helps his viewers become more engaged in his performances and participate as well when the chance is given to them. When watching stand-up comedies, the viewers already know not to get offended when the comedian includes them in his jokes as it is only for fun and is not meant to intentionally offend them. Bo Burnham interacts with his audience more than Jo Koy because he responds to their shouts more. However, Jo Koy appears to be more careful when responding to his viewers because he chooses his words carefully while Bo Burnham tends to just reply with the first thing that comes to his mind.
These are just examples of how alike and how different comedians can be. Be that as it may, comedians all have one goal, and that is to make sure that their audience is entertained throughout their whole performance no matter what style they use, what topic they discuss, or how they interact with their audience. Once this goal is achieved, that is only the time the show can be considered a success.

Video clip from Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special “Sticks & Stones”
Dave Chappelle’s recent standup, Sticks and Stones (released on Netflix), raised much controversy surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, pedophilia, and what I’m going to focus on - Asian stereotypes.
Chappelle begins one of his jokes by saying, What if I was a Chinese man born in a Black man’s body? He then goes on to make an incredibly racist facial expression and accent depicting his image of a Chinese person. Later, he deems the joke acceptable because his wife is Asian, but I disagree.
Let’s start with the first problem I have with this joke. At the root of it all, it’s simply a bad joke. It was poorly set up, the impression itself was poor, and overall it felt like a cheap add on just there for shock value. Chappelle’s use of the ‘classic’ Asian immigrant accent added little to the joke’s overall appeal and could have easily been swapped out for something less offensive. “Comedy is subjective” sure, but if you’re laughing at this joke, I’d like you to think twice about why you’re laughing.
It doesn’t feel like Chappelle is laughing ‘with’ us, a tactic used by many comedians where the comedian and the audience share a laugh over common ground or a shared experience, it feels more along the lines of ‘at’ us. Dave Chappelle is married to an Asian woman, but that doesn’t give him the right to make an insensitive joke about Asians. Chappelle isn’t the first comedian to make such remarks about Asians or Asian stereotypes publically. Chris Rock’s racially insensitive joke about Asians at the 2016 Oscars was just flat out distasteful.
“Introducing the accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers, which tabulates the vote results, Mr. Rock instead brought onstage two boys and a girl of Asian heritage, whom he named Ming Zu, Bao Ling and David Moskowitz. As they clutched briefcases, they visually illustrated the stereotype that Asians are diligent workers who excel at math.“If anybody’s upset about that joke, just tweet about it on your phone that was also made by these kids,” Mr. Rock added, a punch line interpreted as a reference to child labor in Asia.” (source: NYTimes)
The joke was dated. The ‘Asians are good at math’ bit has gotten old and let’s be honest, was it ever funny?.
Comedy tends to be the area where racism is swept under the rug. Just because these comedians are people of color or because it’s “part of the job”, does that give them the right to make these types of jokes or comments? Does that mean we can dismiss or ignore the blatantly racist statements made by these big-name stars? Is this simply a call for attention, or is it a “sign of the times” (source: salon)
To end things on a good note, here’s a list of Netflix stand-ups you should watch instead of Chappelle’s Sticks & Stones:
Aziz Ansari’s Right Now
Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King
Jo Koy’s Live from Seattle
Ali Wong’s Baby Cobra
Judah Friedlander’s America is the Greatest Country in the United States

Blog #4
When you’re bored on Netflix, with plenty of time to waste and let’s say you’re into comedy… why not check out “Live From Seattle”. I am a big fan of stand up and I am taking this opportunity to share Jo Koy’s Netflix special “Live From Seattle” released in 2017 and I still laugh about it today! Starting with how women cry when they’re laughing to becoming a nurse expectation to problems with enrolling your son in private school, Jo Koy shows how being an adult doesn’t mean you’ve lost your teenage nature. He uses his humor to talk about his upbringing from his single Filipino mom and how it affected the way he raises his son. Comedy is lifting and an impactful way of tackling the topic of one’s back story and makes it relatable for other people in understanding a person’s challenges. Family is valued across many cultures and watching this comedian made me look back at how my mom has raised me and despite her challenges in the Philippines, we have made achievements together in the US. For this hour-long storytelling be prepared for obscene hilarious truths of puberty and other life lessons you might encounter when you’re raised Asian American.

blog 6 || Jo Koy: Live From Seattle
Recently Netflix has released one of their special programs featuring Jo Koy. Just a bit of background on Koy, he is a Filipino American comedian. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he began his career in 1994 at a comedy club in Vegas. So yesterday, March 28th, his netflix special, Jo Koy: Live from Seattle , was released. In the hour and 45 min special he jokes on about his classics like his little filipino mother to his son. He is hands down one of the funniest comedians. He talks a lot about his culture in his acts so there were a lot of parts that I was able to relate to.
In one snippet he begins to talk about how Filipino mothers predetermine their childs careers. You either have two choices: a nurse or a mailman. That has got to be one of the realest things I have ever heard. I cannot tell you how many nurses and postmen I have in my family!! He also mentions how when he was younger his mom would always try to cure any kind of illness with Vicks Vapor Rub.She would be an old school Filipino Lola and try any at home remedy instead of going to the doctors. My grandparents wouldn’t necessarily use vicks but she would have hella home remedies to use.
If you need a good laugh, I think you should watch it. 10/10 definitely reccomend. He also has other funny stand up shows that you should watch. Some of them are either on Youtube or Netflix!!
