“SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” Premieres Feb. 13 on Hulu
- “They sounded like nothing else,” Jimmy Jam says of the Family Stone in trailer for Questlove-directed doc
Sly Stone is smiling as an interviewer recalls the singer was “at that place where every musician wants to be.”
But the smile quickly disappears when she says: “You get there and you blow it.”
Thus is the thrust of “SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius),” the new Questlove-directed documentary on Stone that explores the first-of-his-kind musician and band and the leader’s public flame out.
“They sounded like nothing else,” Jimmy Jam says in the trailer for the film, premiering Feb. 13 on Hulu.
“Guys. And girls. And black. And white. You get all that input,” Stone says in an archival clip where he discusses his idea for the Family Stone.
But their run was short - eight years - and Stone descended into drug addiction and erratic performances.
“If you’ve been on this heightened, explosive life, your body has taken in so much energy, and you’ve given out so much energy, and you stop, where’s that energy go?” André 3000 says in the trailer.
The answer, presumably, will be in “SLY LIVES!,” which features appearances from Family Stone members Larry Graham, Jerry Martini and Greg Errico, plus Nile Rodgers, Clive Davis and others.

The Human League - Human
Because this classic from 1⃣9⃣8⃣6⃣ was unlike anything The Human League had released and the collaboration with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis resulted in this haunting ballad. #Human

I discuss Patti Labelle's solo career and I continue to be highly scathing about her works despite some of them being, well, quite great. Still, I might reserve most of my criticism for Patti Labelle's 90's opus but I think the reason for that might be that her 80's could've been hard to top during the time I mentioned, so she settled into a pattern in the latter period. She made many records in the vein of Flame, which are nice, i.e. there's nothing wrong with them, yet this is also a problem. She and her collaborators are professional on them, which could be another issue. I agree, should she pull of something else instead? A good question to add here would be – would she be even allowed to do that? If not, why so?

A-T-4 105 Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
Jam & Lewis had a few hits under their black fedora hats by 1984 including Just Be Good To Me by the S.O.S. Band, and Encore for Cheryl Lynn. Just Be Good To Me had gotten into the Top 20 around the world, including the UK, and in the Top 3 on both the US Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance charts in the US (US charts are weird!). Encore hit the top spot of the US R&B Chart. Jam & Lewis would continue with these artists, develop a new artist for Tabu (the label the S.O.S. Band were signed to) Cherrelle, and give two established acts their biggest hits in years
Cherrelle - I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (12" Version)

Thelma Houston - You Used To Hold Me So Tight (Dub Version)

Change - Change of Heart (Special Extended Mix)

Throwback: The Time-Gigolos Get Lonely Too
Tumblr media
"Gigolos Get Lonely Too" was one of the three singles from The Time's 1982 album, What Time Is It? Prince wrote the song about playboys needing love and played all of the instruments except the drums played by Morris Day, and Jesse Johnson supplied the guitar work. Prince's distinct use of computerized drums and synthesizers were some of the things that identified his '80s sound. The album listed all of the songwriting credits to The Time, but the songs were attributed to Prince when they were registered with ASCAP. Morris Day's suave demeanor faded into an out-of-character vulnerability when he pleaded for love. Prince's ingenious writing and arranging and Day's emotionally heavy performance were the next phase in developing the Minneapolis funk sound. "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" was the only ballad on the album, and it blazed quiet storm radio playlists. The original members of The Time released their fifth album, Condensate, in 2011. In 2022, Prince's estate told Morris Day that he could no longer perform using the name Morris Day & The Time, but the matter was resolved by 2023, with Day being able to keep the name. Day's fifth solo album, Last Call, was released in 2022. He told Jennifer Hudson on her talk show earlier this year that his 2023 tour would be his last as he planned to retire.
