첫 솔로 앨범 <FACE>

“내면의 감정을 깊숙이 들여다보고, 진솔한 이야기만 담으려 노력했어요. 자전적인 앨범이지만 노래를 듣는 모든 분이 자신의 이야기처럼 공감하고 위로 받았으면 좋겠습니다. RM 형이 지난 연말에 발매한 솔로 앨범의 수록곡을 자전거를 타고 싶게 만드는 노래라고 표현한 적 있어요. 그 앨범을 들으며 좋아하는 카페에 간 다음, 제 앨범을 집중해서 들으면 완벽한 하루가 될 거라 믿어요.”

뉴욕에 관한 잊지 못할 기억

“2018년 방탄소년단 월드 투어 ‘LOVE YOURSELF’의 일환으로 뉴욕 시티 필드 스타디움에서 공연을 펼친 기억이 아직도 선명해요. 엄청난 규모였죠. 4만여 명의 전 세계 팬들이 한국말로 노래를 따라 불러줄 때의 감동은 지금도 잊을 수 없어요. 팬들과 함께 노래하고 춤추는 모습은 사람들이 ‘방탄소년단’ 하면 언제든 가장 먼저 떠올렸으면 하는 장면입니다.”

나의 우상

“아주 어릴 때부터 동경해온 태양 형님을 신곡 ‘VIBE’의 피처링에 참여하면서 가까이에서 뵙게 됐는데 생각보다 훨씬 멋진 분이셨어요. 저도 그런 사람이 되고 싶더라고요. 마침 솔로 앨범 작업에 매진하던 차에 스스로를 돌아보는 계기가 됐죠. 새 앨범에 관해 구한 조언이 있냐고요? 다 완성되면 들려드리고 싶어서 꾹 참았답니다.”

잃고 싶지 않은 마음

“멤버, 스태프, 팬들까지, 저를 더 빛나게 해주는 사람들이 곁에 있으니 ‘나는 참 행복한 사람’이라는 생각을 자주 해요. 그러면 힘이 나거든요. 방탄소년단의 일원이라는 책임감과 멤버들과 함께할 때의 행복, 한결같은 팬들에 대한 감사함이 어우러질 때 엄청난 에너지가 분출되죠.”

첫 자작곡 ‘약속’에 담은 진심

“수많은 소중한 사람들이 옆에서 나를 응원하고 사랑해주고 있음을 잊지 말자고 스스로에게 약속하기 위해 쓴 곡이었어요. 여전히 이 곡을 사랑해주는 분들을 위해 솔로 앨범을 공개하기 전, 정식 음원으로 발매하기로 했죠. 앞으로 더 많은 분이 들어주면 좋겠어요.”

음악의 힘

“방탄소년단의 음악은 항상 세상에 더 많은 사랑과 관용이 필요하다고 이야기한다는 의견에 정말 동의합니다. 저 역시 멤버들이 만든 곡을 들으며 많은 위로를 받으니까요. 위로야말로 음악이 지닌 가장 큰 힘 아닐까요?”

만능이 되기까지

“춤과 노래, 두 가지 다 놓치고 싶지 않아요. 앞으로도 하나의 취향을 고집하기보다 여러 컨셉과 장르의 음악을 만들고, 보여주고 싶고요. 물론 자존감이 낮아질 정도로 스스로를 몰아붙이는 건 별로 좋지 않더라고요. 팬들에게 완벽한 무대를 선보이고 싶은 부담은 있지만 건강하게 노력하며 전진할 겁니다.”

방탄소년단의 ‘챕터 2’

“모든 멤버의 행보를 진심으로 응원하고 있어요. 혼자만의 항해를 시작한 입장에서 두려움에 사로잡힐 때가 많은데 멤버들을 떠올리�� 힘을 내곤 해요. 각자의 개성을 믿고 그것을 멋지게 표현하는 멤버들을 볼 때마다 다시 함께 모일 날을 기대하며 더 성장하기 위해 분발하게 되거든요.”

한결같은 호흡

“커리어든, 러닝이든 오래 달리기 위해 중요한 건 ‘얼마나 잘 참느냐’가 아닐까요. 힘들지만 버텨내면 보람과 성과가 따르죠. 어떤 일을 계기로 단단해지기도 했다가, 때로는 ‘이렇게 물러졌나’ 싶을 만큼 유연해지기도 하면서 저만의 페이스를 지켜가는 중이에요.”

가장 편안한 순간

“친구들에게 고마운 점은 특별한 순간이 아니라 평범한 일상을 함께한다는 점이에요. 친구들과 있으면 특별한 게 필요 없더라고요. 함께 밥을 먹고, 소소한 이야기를 나누며 웃고 떠들 때 가장 편안하고 행복한 상태가 돼요.”

지금 가장 기대하는 것

Being the New Face of Tiffany & Co.

“I feel truly honored to join Tiffany & Co. as its new brand ambassador. I’m always excited by new encounters and challenges. They’re what keep me grounded, giving me a sense of responsibility. I look forward to building a mutually positive partnership with the brand in the coming days. Most of the time, I prefer going with simple outfits and styles, and the ‘Tiffany T’ Collection I got to wear for the latest photo shoot with Vogue Korea caught my eye. I really like how cool and chic they look.”

FACE, My First Solo Album

“I tried looking deep within myself and being as honest as possible with this album. Much of it’s based on my own experiences, but I hope everyone who listens finds it relatable and comforting. I’ve said somewhere that the songs RM wrote for his solo album, Indigo, which was released late last year, made me want to go for a bike ride. If you listen to RM’s album while cycling to your favorite coffee shop and then listen to my album while you’re there, it’ll be a perfect day. I promise!”

An Unforgettable Moment in NYC

“I still vividly remember our performance at the Citi Field stadium in New York City, in 2018, during BTS’ Love Yourself tour. It was a massive concert. I still get goose bumps thinking about how over 40,000 fans from all over the world came together to sing our songs with us, all in the original Korean lyrics. Singing and dancing along with our fans is what I want people to think of first when they hear the name BTS.”

My Idol

“I had a chance to be featured in ‘Vibe,’ the new single by Taeyang [a member of K-pop boy group BigBang], whom I’ve admired ever since I was a little kid. This collaboration brought us face-to-face for the first time, and I was delighted to learn that my idol was even cooler than I’d imagined. I want to follow in his footsteps. The collaboration also gave me a chance to reflect on the solo album I was working on at the time as well. No, I didn’t ask Taeyang for any advice about my album. I’d rather just play it to him once it’s finished.”

What I Tell Myself

“I try to always be conscious of the fact that I’m truly lucky and happy because I’m surrounded by people who help me shine, including the other members of BTS, the group’s staff and crew, and my fans. The more I tell myself this, the more encouraged I feel. I get an incredible amount of energy from the combination of the sense of responsibility I have as a BTS member, the happiness I get from spending time with my groupmates and the gratitude I feel toward my rock-solid fans.”

Being Truthful Through “Promise,” My First Composition

“I wrote this song back in 2018 as a promise to myself that I’ll never forget the countless people who love and support me in every way they can. As there’s been quite some demand from fans who still remember and like the song, I decided to officially release it as a single before putting out my solo album. I hope more and more people will listen to it.”

The Power of Music

“I wholeheartedly agree when people say BTS’ music emphasizes how much more we should love one another and try to be inclusive in this world. I find a lot of comfort and courage in what the other guys have written and sung about as well. I think the greatest strength of music is its power to comfort us. Don’t you think so?”

Being Talented at Everything

“As a pop artist, I want to excel at both dancing and singing. I also want to perform a diverse range of musical genres and themes instead of sticking to just one type. Of course, I’ve learned over the years that it’s neither healthy nor productive to push myself to be perfect in everything. I want to show my fans only the best, but I also have to take a healthy, sustainable approach.”

Chapter 2 for BTS

“I’m rooting for my groupmates in their new solo careers. Now that we’ve set sail separately on these new adventures, I can’t help but feel anxious and terrified from time to time. In those moments, I think of my fellow group members and try to find strength in them. Seeing the other BTS members find their calling and try to develop themselves further, I naturally feel inspired and motivated to achieve my own goals as well, until the day we all meet again.”

Going Slow and Steady

“I believe in order to last longer and go further, whether in running or in your career, you need to be patient. You’ll reap rewards for making it through the tough times. Some hardships have made me a much stronger person, while others have taught me to be much more flexible. I try to keep my own pace as I navigate all these experiences.”

RELAXING

“I’m grateful to my friends because we share ordinary, everyday moments — not just momentous occasions. I don’t need anything else when I’m in their company. I’m happiest and most comfortable when I’m eating with them, having silly conversations and laughing.”

Friendship With ARMY

“I’ve been friends with these fans for a full decade now — not a short span of time by any measure. Perhaps it’ll take more time before we can understand each other completely, but we’ve been together long enough to understand and support one another’s thoughts, feelings and needs. The more time I’ve spent cultivating these relationships, the more important I feel the members of ARMY have become to me.”

Six marvelous months with Park Jimin

January 2023

The year started with the announcement that Jimin had been appointed as the Global Brand Ambassador for Christian Dior (17/01). The occasion was marked with six Awesome magazine covers and the Dior Fashion Show in Paris (20/01). The fashion establishment was blown away by the response to Jimin's participation in the show.

The same month Jimin released Vibe (13/01) , a dream collaboration with his long time musical hero Taeyang from Big Bang.

This was both artists first solo hit on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 76.

February 2023

Jimin did a live on 03/02 in which he confirmed that his solo music, although a little delayed, was likely to come out in March 2023.

On 21/02, Big Hit announced that FACE would be released on 24/03/23. The next day they published the countdown schedule and on the 23/02 the tracklist for the album.

March 2023

On 02/03, Jimin was named Ambassador for Tiffany & Co which he wore spectacularly in his photoshoot for Vogue that month.

On 06/03, Soundcloud super track Promise along with Jimin's yuletide gift to ARMY, Christmas Love were added to Jimin's Spotify profile. The era of streaming Jimin's profile had begun.

From then on, everything started speeding towards the release of FACE. The Hardware and Software images came out.

Set Me Free Pt 2 exploded into the world on 17/03. Nobody saw it coming and it caused a furore on social media. It was a clear statement of intent. I am here to stay and I am here to slay. It debuted at No.30 on the Billboard Hot 100.

FACE was released on 24/03 along with the Like Crazy MV. Speaking for myself Like Crazy blew me away. Jimin set out to make a statement with that song and I will always be proud to be the fan of such an honest and brave artist.

With the release of FACE we also discovered that hidden on the record was a very special song, Letter, in which Jungkook sings background vocals.

That last week of March saw Jimin appeared on the Jimmy Fallon Show with a live performance of Like Crazy.

In the next 9 days, he gave comeback performances on MCountdown, Music Bank and Inkiagayo. He came live to thank ARMY for turning up to his shows. He won awards. He appeared on the radio, on the entertainment shows Beat Coin, Ddeun Ddeun and Pixid. He even did fan meetings.

April 2023

On 01/04 Jimin gave an unforgettable acoustic rendition of Like Crazy live on Lee Mujin Service April Fools Edition.

And then on 03/04, Jimin made history. The first South Korean to ever make No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the first Asian Artist to do so in 60 years. He came live in the early hours of the morning, clearly shellshocked but brimming over with gratitude to everyone who had supported the album and the song.

Then on 05/04 the promotions were over and Jimin once again expressed his happiness and thanks to ARMY for supporting FACE.

It had been a whirlwind and I think we, as well as Jimin, were caught off guard when the promotions ended so quickly. We had a beautiful album to savour but we wanted to continue to savour it with Jimin.

The focus returned to fashion when Jimin flew to New York at the end of April to attend the Tiffany & Co Landmark opening (28/04).

He attended Suga's concert in Newark on the 29/04 and headed back to South Korea later that week. But why didn't he fly straight back after the concert we wondered?

May 2023

It all soon became clear, he had been filming the MV for Angel Pt 1 from the Fast X movie. The song came out on the 19/05 and debuted at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was Jimin's fourth chart entry in five months.

At the end of the month, Jimin made a short trip to London and we are still speculating on what that was all about. He posted photos of his trip to HP World as soon as he got back to South Korea on 27/05.

June 2023

Festa 2023 soaked Seoul in purple for nearly three weeks at the beginning of June in celebration of BTS's ten years since debut. Jimin gifted fans with a live performance of Dear.ARMY on 07/06 and....

,,,,,,on 13/06 BTS released this beautiful live version of Take Two with Jimin adding depth and colour to the song with his stunning vocals.

But there was still more to come, on 15/06 Jimin came live in high spirits and spent quality time with ARMY. It was the same day as the release of Angel Part 2.

On the 27/06 Jimin's solo profile appeared on Billboard and serves as a permanent reminder of everything that has happened in the short space of 6 months. It has been a roller coaster ride and I am still hopeful that we will still get more music from Jimin before he has to enlist. I wanted to make this post so that no one forgets what he has achieved and the permanent mark he has made on the global music industry since he took his first steps towards a solo career.

Did you see that Vogue article on rise of babygirls in men's fashion? They included Jimin Felix on the cover pic but then in the writeup mentioned RM has earned the moniker of babygirl ???? I mean out of all 7 of them I'd argue RM is the one who least exudes babygirl energy (but idk if they're including any and all gender neutral or feminine leaning fashion pieces as " babygirl " ) but anyway I digress... Thought you'd enjoy it!

And this is the definition

I find it not that suitable, especially if we think of the label itself. I know it's already understood that way in the pop culture zeitgest, but to me, the term evokes plays on gender traditional understandings of Lolita-like figures while simultaneously bringing a twist to it when assigned to men. I don't know if that makes sense. It's like taking the playful/cocky nature and you mix it with a bit of fragility. It's an archetype that gets transformed, it has another dimension added depending on the gender and the subsequent effects it has on gender expression. But maybe my definition is about something else and not the 2023 baby girl term as explained in Vogue. It being about hotness and how interesting a guy is seems pretty basic/simplistic to me and perhaps not a very appropriate moniker.

RM is not a babygirl for carrying a Bottega Veneta bag when he's just promoting the brand. Just like Jimin wearing Dior at airports is not the thing that contributes to him being classified as one. He could wear nothing and he'd still be one.

Anyway, I find that for me, there's one true supreme that governed the 2023 babygirl archetype and it's none other than Kookie. Quintessential babygirl from looks, behavior to temper.
