ENDEAVOUR 1.02 Fugue

The way everyone comes together to help him in their own ways after he gets stabbed in this episode is so heartwarming and really helps establish an emotional bond between the characters. What's that, Morse? You think you're all alone in the world? Have some strong evidence to the contrary.

Morse and friends

As an accompaniment to my earlier post about Morse and loneliness, especially how he sees himself as more alone than he actually is, here are some photos of him with those who consider themselves his friends. All photos from IMdB.

This was a hard bit to distill into a GIF, but I did my best. This is from “Game”.

It’s one of the only moments where if you wanted to be uncharitable, you could argue that Strange is being a bit of a dick.

What I find so fascinating is the unbelievable acting Evans does. 

Morse’s suppressed rage, humiliation and absolute incredulity and barely contained disbelief at Strange’s (maybe) dig is really too much. I edited the shit out of this, and I promise this is absolutely everything there is. The way he clenches his jaw with that disbelieving smirk is everything in life. 

The setup: they’ve run into one another at the mortuary. Morse has offered to go investigate Miss Palfrey’s house for Strange. He’s in a Mood.

The dialogue immediately proceeding this is:

M: I'll take it off your hands if you like. Save you the job. I've nothing else on.

S: Yeah, all right. Suppose I'd better make the most before we lose you to nights. When do you reckon you'll start?

M(grimly): My exam paper never reached Division. "Automatic failure."

Just Morse ‘pursuing lines of inquiry’

I'm very fond of Strange, but it does bug me how he's such a golden boy within the world of the show - never faces ramifications for joining the masons, no repercussions for engaging in police brutality, often perceived as the hero of a case, no serious mess-ups that cause blowback from Thursday, receives direct praise from Thursday (including what a great guy he is compared to Morse), Joan is always happy to give him information and never gets frustrated with him, etc.

Morse is the only person who seems aware of his less admirable qualities, and I can't say I blame him for holding a grudge against him. And even in his case, he doesn't push back much for the number of times Strange pulls rank or tries to act morally superior. Everything just fell into his lap.

Strange: Not forever. Just until Thursday’s calm.

Jakes: So, forever.

Endeavour's Awesome 70s Flares

But here's the question - is this Endeavour’s off-duty attire? In which case – awesome! Or, in an even more interesting scenario, is that his cop issue clothes without the tie and jacket??!!

Same troos or not? And also, would Endeavour wear a blue shirt and black trousers casually? Doesn’t this just look like his police shirt:

What I’m getting at is, did his awesome uniform come with awesome 70s flares, or was Endeavour just being that adorably stylish on his day off?!

If it was the uniform, then it leads to another mystery... now I may just be missing something, but I can't actually identify this scene from season 6:

Yes, it could be another season 6 episode other than ‘Pylon’ and I’ve missed it, but here’s my thinking – I don’t think he wore this in any other season 6 episodes as it was all dark shirts, slim trousers and ties later on, and I think it really indicates it is his uniform, making it ‘Pylon’. Now, if it is ‘Pylon’ then I haven’t come across this scene in the episode, meaning that it’s missing!

And to bring it all together, here are some bts shots where Roger and Shaun seem to be having a laugh about the flares!
