I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.
it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"
plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.
anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
"You have one choice, boy: sex or the saw. Sex is... well, nobody knows. But the saw, the saw is family."
#the texas chainsaw massacre 2#horror imagery#tobe hooper#american cinema#1986#l.m. kit carson#caroline williams#dennis hopper#jim siedow#bill moseley#bill johnson#ken evert#lou perryman#kirk sisco#barry kinyon#chris douridas#james n. harrell#harlan jordan#horror film#jerry lambert#a hell of a swing by Hooper: to return to the property that had made his name as a filmmaker for a belated sequel more than a decade later#but to deliver a film so tonally distinct from its predecessor‚ so far in mood and style‚ that it acts almost as pastiche of the genre#he absolutely nailed it though. truly one of The great horror sequels‚ the blackly funny‚ gloopy yin to the original's nerve shredding#sinewy yang. Siedow was the only returning cast member‚ with his role developed and character expanded‚ and he's truly brilliant#as the weirdly endearing cannibal cook among this dysfunctional serial killing family; Moseley's whole performance is a delight too‚#a high energy‚ constantly chattering bit of dangerous clownery that's the perfect balance to the (newly childlike and sensitive) Leatherface#Williams is great‚ one of the all time final girls‚ while getting Hopper (right at the beginning of his career revival after several years#in the critical wilderness) was a huge boon: he gives everything to this bizarre‚ ridiculous role. where the og film was actually#surprisingly discreet in its onscreen violence‚ relying more on the building of unbearable tension and uncomfortable editing#this film is a gory mess from the very outset‚ and it does feel at times like Hooper is challenging the viewer after the response to TCM

Round Three of The Hottest 80s Bands Tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Depeche Mode
Defeated opponents: Anthrax, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Genres: Synth-pop, electronic rock, new wave, dark wave, alternative rock
Lineup: Dave Gahan - vocals
Martin Gore - guitar and keyboard
Alan Wilder - drums and keyboard
Andy Fletcher - bass
Albums from the 80s:
Speak & Spell (1981)
 A Broken Frame (1982)
Construction Time Again (1983)
Some Great Reward (1984)

Music for the Masses (1987)
Propaganda: The music. The LOOKS. The voice. (The sexual tension?) And they’re still going strong. My colleague saw them in the UK when they were only starting out and said they were so nervous. I find the juxtaposition of the confidence of their sound (not to mention the black leather) and that anecdote really endearing.
The Kinks
Defeated opponents: Faster Pussycat, U2

Lineup: Ray Davies – guitar, harmonica, keyboards, vocals
Dave Davies – lead guitar, backing vocals
Ian Gibbons – keyboards, backing vocals
