How many Jews are there in Prague now?

Jews from all around the world come to this magic city to discover more about the ancient legends of the Jewish Old Town, pay tribute to Maharal, the Great Rabbi Leow, and meet his famous Golem (who is, by the way, sleeping in the attic of the Altneu synagogue ;) so he is not often around ....

90 percent of all the Jewish visitors, who eventually make their way to the synagogue for a tefilah, ask ONE question : "How many Jews are there in Prague now?"

Well, the truth is, first, locals seem to be fed up with this question. They hate it simply because a) everyone asks it (all over again) b) they have been asked this question for at least 159,782 times.

Second, the answer to this question is that the Jewish community in Prague has about 1,600 regular members (meaning that they are halakhicly Jewish).

Third, the answer to your next question - whether they are all religious - is likely "nope" but Prague is happy to have two mynianim for Shabbat and chagim in addition to Chabad, which has its own mynian. In total, there are three Orthodox mynianim for Shabbat and chagim, which is not that bad in the end ;)

To wrap up, knowing the basic statistics, you can now spare your fellow Jews in Prague asking THE question for 159,783rd time! :))

Sunday

Sunday we toured the Jewish Quarter of Prague again, in more detail, and also got a tour of Prague Castle.

NYU organized these events as "cultural events" to add to our learning while here in this city. And yet... the man they hired for the Jewish town tour was a bit squinky on his information. Ex. "You know, they don't even have twelve men for their minyans." or "this synagogue gives services everyday" when in fact I had just asked inside and they told us only Friday and Saturday services occur at the Spanish Synagogue.

Anyway, we got to wander through the Jewish town again and it was again very interesting. Most notably, the clock that goes backwards because it works with a Hebrew clock instead of the type of clock face many of us are accustomed to, the statue of Franz Kafka (photo coming soon), and information on Kosher food in Prague. Apparently, while Prague was once a city to which Jews flocked, after the terrors of the 20th century, there is only a very small community left in the area. One of the results of this is that the kosher food is very rare and very expensive. But, the Jewish town hall has the answer. If you ring the bell at the hall, a group of men will come and inspect you, interrogate you as if you were boarding an El-Al flight, and then if you pass they will let you in to go eat inexpensive Kosher food with the head rabbi of Prague. Otherwise, you must go to the expensive, amazing looking, Kosher restaurants that dot the Jewish town. We look forward to trying these places out if we can splurge a bit because the food looks excellent. We also hope to find a kosher deli or butcher but our guide didn't have any information to help us on that front.

We took lunch at the Praha Bake Shop and enjoyed our soup with bread (loaf). Then we walked to the Prague Castle to see what there was to see. Most notably, closed doors. See, what NYU Prague did not inform us of was that most of the attractions and exhibits at the castle closed at twenty minutes before 4pm and our tours did not arrive at the castle until 4pm. So... we wandered through the mostly closed castle and felt a bit like trespassers at Disney. However, we did get to see lots of Turkish police cars because there was a meeting of Turkish political members with the Czechs. We also saw the only Medieval mosaic north of the Alps, a group of three guards who marched in tight formation, and "Gold Street" where, during the reign of Rudolf II alchemists attempt to turn "plums to gold."

We headed home and made dinner, alas no photos of this delicious meal but a recipe is coming shortly.
