“Her music shows off her passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville, blues, jazz, baroque, and folkloric music. And her latest album, Mélusine, showcases all of that,” Jess Gillam says of Cécile McLorin Salvant, her guest on BBC Radio 3’s This Classical Life. “Her live shows are absolutely electric, full of drama, invention, and commitment to the music.” Salvant shares some of her favorite music—by Puccini, Gabriel Bataille, Camarón de la Isla, and Wanda Jackson—as does Gillam, whose own selections include music from (past This Classical Life guest) Caroline Shaw & Attacca Quartet’s Grammy-winning album Orange. You can hear the episode here.

Remember the amazing saxophonist at the BAFTAS last night?
She wrote this brilliant letter to the Guardian today about music education, which I thought I would share with you. Music is integral to society and people’s wellbeing and should not be being cut in schools. I would not be the person I was without the amazing musical education I recieved, and am extremely upset about it being undervalued as an option for children today.

Caroline Shaw was on BBC Radio 3’s This Classical Life to talk with host Jess Gillam about some of their favorite music, including works by Clara Schumann, Mark Guiliana, Scott Joplin, Sarah Vaughan, Josquin des Prez, Stanley Myers, Kae Tempest, and Schubert. You can hear the music and conversation here.
Evergreen, Shaw’s new album with Attacca Quartet, has been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance and made several year’s best lists, including NPR Music's 10 Best Classical Albums of 2022 (“some of the finest string quartet music of recent times ... irresistible”).
