'but there is the question of how much that decency would be preserved were their positions reversed' now THAT would be one hell of a role swap au
see if fitzjames and hickey were roleswapped (so that hickey is a commander and jfj is an able seaman/mate) i feel like it'd end up with hickey trying to engineer increasingly convoluted ways to get jfj killed in order to stop him from getting in the way of his attempts to manwhore manipulate manslaughter his way into seizing control of the expedition while jfj through a combination of skill and sheer luck and his historically accurate roachlike ability to survive against incredible odds keeps dodging his attempts like an ant in a microwave (until the scurvy gets him)
#theyd be on some tom and jerry on ice shit#no idea what their relationships to crozier would be like in this scenario although i definitely think thered#still be some insane psychosexual bullshit there on both their parts#also if hickey was in a position of command both the mutiny and the cannibalism would happen much sooner i think

Franklin's lost expedition crew
I was looking at posts about AMC's The Terror and I kept getting confused by the use of first names, so I wanted to see how many of the characters had the same names. Arranging the crew in alphabetical order, I got:
1 x Abraham (Seeley)
4 x Alexander (Berry, McDonald, Paterson, Wilson)
5 x Charles (Best, Coombs, Des Voeux, Johnson, Osmer)
1 x Cornelius (Hickey)
2 x Daniel (Arthur, Bryant)
3 x David (Leys, Macdonald, Young) + Bonus: Bryant in the show but most historical sources I found list him as Daniel
1 x Edmund (Hoar)
3 x Edward (Couch, Genge, Little)
2 x Edwin (Helpman, Lawrence)
3 x Francis (Crozier, Dunn, Pocock)
1 x Frederick (Hornby) + Bonus: Des Voeux, whom I have seen referred to as Frederick rather than Charles on occasion
6 x George (Cann, Chambers, Hodgson, Kinnaird, Thompson, Williams)
1 x Gillies (MacBean)
1 x Graham (Gore)
7 x Henry/Harry (Collins, Goodsir, Le Vesconte, Lloyd, Peglar, Sait, Wilkes)
10 x James (Brown, Daly, Elliot, Fairholme, Fitzjames, Hart, Reid, Ridgen, Thompson, Walker) + Bonus: Ross, who was not part of the expedition but appears in the show
23 x John (Bailey, Bates, Bridgens, Brown, Cowie, Diggle, Downing, Franklin, Gregory, Hammond, Handford, Hartnell, Irving, Kenley, Lane, Morfin, Murray, Peddie, Strickland, Sullivan, Torrington, Weekes, Wilson)
2 x Joseph (Andrews, Healey)
1 x Josephus (Geater)
1 x Luke (Smith)
1 x Magnus (Manson)
1 x Philip (Reddington)
1 x Reuben (Male)
2 x Richard (Aylmore, Wall)
8 x Robert (Carr, Ferrier, Golding, Hopcraft, Johns, Sargent, Sinclair, Thomas)
3 x Samuel (Brown, Crispe, Honey)
1 x Solomon (Tozer)
16 x Thomas (Armitage, Blanky, Burt, Darlington, Evans, Farr, Hartnell, Honey, Johnson, Jopson, McConvey, Plater, Tadman, Terry, Watson, Work)
22 x William (Aitken, Bell, Braine, Clossan, Fowler, Gibson, Goddard, Heather, Hedges, Jerry, Johnson, Mark, Orren, Pilkington, Read, Rhodes, Shanks, Sims, Sinclair, Smith, Strong, Wentzall)
#i saw the 23 johns coming but not the 22 williams#there may be a mistake somewhere but that was a lot of names#amc the terror#the terror#terrorposting

You know I must ask after The Terror, but I also must ask after Anne with an E as well
Ok so, for the Terror, you are assuming I know people's name. I've only seen it like 3 times, and there are soooo many cold boys
Favourite character: Neptune Goodsir
Funniest character: Crozier. Great sarcastic boy.
Best-looking character:... Hickey.
3 favourite ships: Well obviously the most cannon actual shipped that happened in the show for real, Crozier and Lady Terror. Second and third are Goodsir/Silna and Hickey/Tunbak
Least favourite character: Sir John the idiot
Least favourite ship: I dunno, I'm sure people ship Crozier and Hickey, so that.
Reason why I watch it: The memes
Why I started watching it: Forced by one @daincrediblegg (shush I love you)
Anne with an E
Here comes some major indecisiveness
Favourite character: Anne. I adore that girl, and I am constantly tempted to make her a child f/o
Funniest character: Oh, that would be a tie between Ruby and Matthew. Runy is so out of touch with the real world, it's precious but also kind of funny. And Matthew is just a master of comedic timing and physical humor some how.
Best-looking character: Hm, either Diana or Ka'kwet. They're both just such lovely girls.
3 favourite ships: Anne/Gilbert, Anne/Diana, Bash/Mary, Mr. Tracey/Therapy
Least favourite character: Probably Mr. Tracey. Also Cole's parents
Least favourite ship: Diana/Jerry (Though I wish Dianna had been allowed to let loose and see the world from his perspective and that maybe they would have maybe been okay)
Reason why I watch it: Dude it's just so good! A great Feel Good show.
Why I started watching it: Saw people talking about it and Netflix reccomend it based off my watching. So glad I gave it a go.

Get to Know Me Memes
Thanks for the tag, @afewbulbsshortofatanningbed! I'm procrastinating furiously, and I would absolutely so much rather do this than anything else right now.
Last Song: That Jack Harlow song except it's about chinchillas:
Favorite Color: Uhhh either hot pink, dark purple, or eye-searing teal.
Last Book: A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. This book has so many great bits, but also so many bits that were infuriating, inconsistent with established canon, broke previously established rules, or just plain made no sense, that it ended up being one of the worst books I've read in quite a while. It was at its best when it allowed the protagonists to be tender and intimate with each other, which meant that the last two chapters were the only ones that didn't make me want to thump my head gently against the wall.
Last Movie: No Time to Die. The tallwife and I decided it was time for us to finally sit down and (re)watch all five Daniel Craig Bond movies, and I gotta say, Casino Royale and Skyfall absolutely hold up---Skyfall in particular feels like a good movie, period, and the best Bond movie yet. The other three movies were entertaining but a hot mess. No Time to Die made many people furious with its ending, but I enjoyed Bond's character arc there, especially in the context of the four movies that preceded it, and especially because we'd watched the movies in rapid succession.
Last TV Show: Delicious in Dungeon, which is absolutely cuckoo bananas bonkers. Highly recommended. Anime on Netflix about a party of D&D-esque adventurers who are so broke that they have to make their way through the dungeon with zero money for provisions. The solution: cook and eat the monsters they slay! Every episode lovingly goes through the proper preparation methods and talks about the importance of eating balanced meals. If you miss original flavor Iron Chef and love D&D, you 1000% need to watch this show.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory: Savory!
Relationship Status: Le married
Last Thing I Googled: That chinchilla Tiktok
Current Obsession: Trying to slowly and painfully wrench my wardrobe around from "buy whatever's cheap and sort of fits" into something resembling a coherent aesthetic. And my true loves---romance novels in general and KJ Charles romance novels in particular---are never far from my mind.
Looking Forward To: Visiting @theglintoftherail and @etoilesombre in March, aaaaahhhh it's gonna be so great!
get to know me(me)
Three Ships: Jerry Crozier/Alec Pyne from Any Old Diamonds. Utterly obsessed with their dynamic. Kim Secretan/Will Darling from the Will Darling Adventures, because what's not to love about a twisty secretive angsty shit + stoic oblivious dude with a boatload of war trauma? Also Arthur/Eames from Inception, I will never not love that universe in general and those two in particular. Just thinking about them makes me want to reread weatherfront's Inception fics.
First Ship: Man, it was probably Todd/Neil from Dead Poets' Society? I watched that movie when I was 11 or 12 years old, and it hit me like a truck, but I had no way to express the horrible yearning I had for Neil to have a different ending, and for him and Todd to remain VERY CLOSE FRIENDS forever.
Currently Reading: King Solomon's Mines. Hilariously, am reading this for KJ Charles reasons, because Think of England is set in that universe and I want more background info on Archie Curtis's adventure-loving guncles. I enjoyed this a whole lot as a child (I think I first read it when I was 11?) and reading it as an adult is...an experience. Colonialism: What a drug!
Currently Watching: Delicious in Dungeon; also slowly catching up on Lower Decks (which is proceeding at a snail's pace because we don't have Paramount Plus, we watch an episode or two every few weeks at a friend's house).
Currently Craving: A Cosmic Crisp apple and some cheddar cheese. For whatever reason, my body has decided that This Is Food and very few other things are. Fuckin' bodies.
As always with these things, I'm not tagging anyone. Feel free to jump in if you, too, are in the mood to talk about yourself and are trying to put off actually thinking about or working on something.

for the same trick (explicit | alec/jerry | 18k)
The Lilywhite Boys get hired to rob a magician, and Alec learns a few new tricks of his own along the way.
I did a thing! This is fanfic for the brilliant book Any Old Diamonds by KJ Charles, which I can’t recommend enough. Fic includes a heist, Alec getting his hands dirty, too many animal metaphors, and way too many sex scenes.

“You’ve been far kinder to me than most people ever are. And, whatever happens, I wanted to tell you now—” “Don’t,” Jerry said, voice harsh. “Don’t what?” “Anything. I’m not a good man, Alec. If I have redeeming features, they are few and far between. You deserve a great deal better than—than you’ve had, but don’t put me on a pedestal because I’m not as shitty as some others. And while I’m giving orders, stop telling yourself you ought to be stronger or more manly or feel less, or whatever it is now.” His fingers tightened on Alec’s. “You don’t need to be different. It would be a crying shame if you were.”

us forest service au part the third
The Non-Technician Permanent Employees (okay i didn’t do a great job of organizing these i’ll admit it)
-this is set in some [fictional] very remote town in the western cascades/western cascades foothills (bc that’s my stomping ground)
-North Terrebus Ranger District on the Terrebus National Forest
-this is terribly american but i know very little abt forestry in england so
-franklin is the district ranger, and crozier and jfj are both supervisors on his district
-jop and billy gibson are admin assistants, but bc it’s the forest service they do basically everything the others don’t -- cleaning, inventory, customer service, maintenance etc.
-jop’s favorite supervisor is crozier -- they know each other from before jop was hired -- and he absolutely gives crozier preferential treatment (but he’s not rude to anyone else unless they deserve it! unless.)
-jop gets his redcard (firefighter qualification) at crozier’s insistence and goes on a fire detail when they’re desperate for bodies, knocks it out of the park
-he keeps his amin assistant job but goes on fire details when he wants to switch things up
-why would he get covered in poison oak, step on wasp nests, and destroy his joints when for the same pay he can be sneaky and indispensable in the air-conditioned office
-somehow jopson has programmed the radio in the timber bullpen (where his desk is) to scan more channels than any other radio; he pretends he doesn’t know how he did it
-ed forgets his lunch about once every two weeks and jopson always somehow hears about it and has something waiting for him (ed’s favorite? What a coincidence!) when he gets back from the field
-ed. King. jop is begging u.
-bridgens, goodsir, mcdonald, blanky, collins, and stanley are resource specialists
-goodsir is the fish/hydro specialist :’)
-he loves fish biology and is competent in the field but there’s no way this man was a hydro tech. The first time he has to help with riparian surveys he gets so tangled up in vine maple he can’t move and the others have to free him
-bridgens is botany!!!
-He knows so many latin names by heart and loves to go out with seasonals and work on their plant id
-He has a HUGE bookshelf in his office (plant id, field guides, ecology, textbooks, conservation philosophy, narrative nonfiction), and anyone is welcome to it
-if no one else is talking on a hike, he will keep a running commentary of every plant he sees and what facts he knows about it
-mcdonald is the wildlife specialist!
-He definitely hunts (affectionate)
-Because a lot of his knowledge comes from informal sources (his family/local knowledge), he believes in everyone’s ability to advance, regardless of background
-he and goodsir are both wilderness first-aid certified, so they’re the go-tos for injuries
-stanley is actually an emt but is not the go-to for injuries
-silna is a wildlife tech and technically under mcdonald’s supervision. She is extremely good at her job, and will 100% succeed mcdonald when he retires. She also does some interpretation for visitors about wildlife safety
-you KNOW blanky is the soil guy
-He HAS the “SOIL” shirt. His car DOES have a bumper sticker that says “start seeing SOIL”. He tells seasonals who are annoying him to “go huff some soil. Maybe you’ll calm down or experience a life-changing revelation”.
-absolute legend, bonkers smart.
-Came up through fire; worked on all the biggest fires of about ~15-25 years ago and has tons of stories: felled a hazard tree that almost dropped a burning branch on him, jerry-rigged a broken water truck, got caught on a breached fireline after the fire crowned over it
-after a severe injury caused him to lose a lot of mobility in his left leg, took time to finish his degree and get the job he has now
-still spends more time in the field than most resource specialists
-Stanley is the NEPA (National Environmental Planning Act) specialist -- detail-oriented and mean but tragically essential
-Sits in his office all day poring over court cases and laws and sending both important and pedantic edits back on everyone’s environmental assessments
-everyone learns early on to ask bridgens or mcdonald for advice on NEPA stuff before going to stanley
-collins is the GIS (geographic information systems) specialist
-also used to work in fire, but transitioned to this role after witnessing the death (heart attack) of one of his crew members
-open about his PTSD and advocate for more mental health resources for wildland firefighters/employees in general
-very good mentor, listening ear for anyone (especially the seasonals)
-keeps a beanbag in his office and Aldo, his emotional support dog, is usually available if someone has had a bad day

you're confusing truth with acts, my love. if you're offering, I'd rather have truth.
— Kim Secretan in Subtle Blood, by KJ Charles
I'm not on here with any sort of regularity, but you'll know when I'm hitting that sweet hyperfixation moment with one or a dozen fandoms. Happens a bunch.
I'm here to talk blorbos. For some value of talk, which most often means ALLCAPS screaming.
My favorites are some variation of sad man pain characters, with a sliding scale of violence.
All my fic is posted under the same name: HogwartsToAlexandria on AO3. I've tried crossposting here but I loathe it so I will not be doing that anymore lmao. Tumblr is for rambling and thirst and other people's cool thoughts.
My favorite things to write and read, outside of purely nsfw things: hurt/comfort, messy dynamics/people who make (sometimes terrible) mistakes and still love each other, gender, neurodivergence, all kinds of families, and disabilities.
This is a pro-ship, multishipping, your-kink-is-not-my-kink-and-that's-okay, ship and let ship, kink and let kink blog. I block antis on sight, as well as people who spend more time bashing characters and ships they don't like than sharing content about the ones they do.
Favorites of the moment and all-time favorites include:
KJ Charles Books: Kim Secretan, Will Darling, Jerry Crozier, Randolph Glyde | Criminal Minds: Aaron Hotchner, David Rossi, Derek Morgan, Emily Prentiss | The Walking Dead: Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon | Hannibal: Hannibal Lecter, Will Graham | HP: Severus Snape, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Sirius Black | MCU: Tony Stark, Stephen Strange, Peter Parker | Suits: Harvey Specter, Mike Ross, Sean Cahill
And many more ✨️

Sasheenka's book club 6/?
For the past 5 months I have read and/or listened to over 40 gay romance books and I keep adding more and more to my collection. I will use my tumblr to do short reviews of the titles I go through. Number of stars ★ to ★★★★★ denote my level of enjoyment throughout.
Any Old Diamonds by KJ Charles (★★★★★)
Lord Alexander Pyne-ffoulkes, the younger son of the Duke of Ilvar, holds a bitter grudge against his wealthy father. The Duke intends to give his second wife a priceless diamond parure on their wedding anniversary - so Alec hires a pair of jewel thieves to steal it. The Duke's remote castle is a difficult target, and while Alec can get himself invited for the anniversary, getting the thieves in will be more difficult. The thieves propose that one of them, Jerry Crozier, will pose as Alec's new best friend. While taking in London society together to make their friendship seem genuine, Jerry effortlessly teases out the lonely young nobleman's most secret desires, and soon he's got Alec in his bed - and the palm of his hand. Or maybe not. Because as the plot thickens, betrayals, secrets, and old evils come to light. Now the jewel thief and the aristocrat must keep up the pretence, find their way through a maze of privilege and deceit, and confront the truth of what's between them...all without getting caught.
Lovely book. Great characters, a fun plot with an unexpected plot twist (but hinted at when you read it the second time!) and a good resolution. The characters have great chemistry and I did enjoy their romance. It was nice seeing a characters from another of KJ’s series there too! So yes, I enjoyed it a lot, plot, characters, angst, romance, the whole shebang and have read and listened to it multiple times now. It's definitely in my favourite folder.
Narrated by: Cornell Collins (Wonderful as always. KJ Charles and Cornell Collins combo it the best lol)
Length: 8 hrs and 5 mins
The Station by Keira Andrews (★★)
It's 1840s in England and ever since Colin Lancaster spied on his family's stable master Patrick Callahan having sex with another man, he's longed for Patrick to do the same to him. When Patrick is caught with his pants down and threatened with death for his crime, Colin speaks up in his defense and confesses his own sinful nature. They're soon banished to the faraway prison colony of Australia. From the miserable depths of a prison ship to the vast, untamed Australian outback, Colin and Patrick must rely on each other. Danger lurks everywhere, and when they unexpectedly get the chance to escape to a new life as cowboys, they'll need each other more than ever.
I did not finish this book because I couldn’t stand the love interest. Patrick was an ass and I wished someone else would come in and swoop Colin off his feet. He didn’t communicate (he didn’t much speak at all), he was grumpy, he insisted everything about him and Colin was merely physical and when Colin said he doesn’t want to pursue their affair in that case he kept demanding sex...Maybe if the book used switching POVs we could get an insight on why he was behaving the way he did...but as it was...nope. Also, it seemed strange to me Colin would be sentenced for attempted sodomy, when he did not, in fact, attempt it, just confessed to being gay...but I was willing to let that slide as a plot device.
Narrated by: Joel Leslie (Joel as usual giving it a lot of feeling)
Length: 7 hrs and 9 mins
Widdershins by Jordan L. Hawk (★★★★)
An urban fantasy taking place in America in 1897. Percival Whyborne is a comparative philologist, apt at cryptography and reading dead languages. After the tragic death of a friend he secretly loved, he's ruthlessly suppressed any desire for other men. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton agent Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book connected to a case of his, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. But they grow close as they uncover evidence of a powerful secret society with occult powers at their disposal being at large in the town of Widdershins and they fall in love love while saving the world.
This book is written in the first person, which I know many people hate, but I didn’t really mind it here. It took me some time to get into this book, but in the end I did enjoy it and I plan on reading the rest of the series. The characters were likeable, the plot came together nicely, the romance was quite sweet with a small speck of angst right before the big finale. Prepare for lots of gore and body horror though! I still think of the way Griffin's Pinkerton partner died!.
Narrated by: Julian G. Simmons (I think the reason why I couldn’t get into it at the beginning was the narration tbh)
Length: 9 hrs and 15 mins

"Erin Fangmann grew up in a military family, has been married to a captain in the Air Force for 18 years and has voted Republican all her life, including for [t]rump. But as with a number of other veterans, troops and military family members who have watched [trump] with alarm, her support has evaporated.
"'He has hurt the military,' said Ms. Fangmann, who lives in Arizona, one of several states in play this November with a high percentage of veterans and active-duty service members. 'Bringing in active-duty members to the streets was a test to desensitize people to his future use of the military for his personal benefit. I think the silent majority among us is going to swing away.'
"Since 2016, [t]rump has viewed veterans as a core slice of his base; in that year’s presidential election, about 60 percent voted for him, according to exit polls, and swing-state counties with especially high numbers of veterans helped him win. Many veterans and members of the military stuck with him even as he attacked the Vietnam War record of Senator John McCain, disparaged families of those killed in combat and denigrated generals whom he fired or drove from government service. Some conservative rank-and-file enlisted members silently agreed with [t]rump.
"But [trump’s] threat last week to use active-duty troops on American streets against largely peaceful protesters, and his flirtation with invoking the 1807 Insurrection Act, have rattled the military world, from its top leaders to its youngest veterans. If they break in significant numbers, they could carry political weight in key battleground states like Arizona, North Carolina and Ohio.
..."[T]he recent condemnations of [t]rump from high-level military veterans like Jim Mattis, the former defense secretary and a retired four-star Marine Corps general, have in some cases fortified the shifting views among military members. 'The Mattis statement has changed people in some amazing ways,' said Chelsea Mark, a Marine veteran in Florida who works for a veteran service organization. 'I went on a veteran hike recently, and I saw someone wearing a [t]rump T-shirt, and that same person this week was posting anti-police-brutality things on her Instagram.'
..."[t]rump’s moves to use the military against American protesters and looters came after several months of other highly unorthodox moves by his administration involving the military, including the clearing of three members of the armed services accused of war crimes; the firing of Capt. Brett E. Crozier after he raised alarms about the coronavirus on the aircraft carrier he commanded; the calling back of West Point students during a pandemic so [trump] could address them for a graduation, which he is set to do on Saturday; and the diversion of funds from military projects to pay for a border wall, a move that followed the deployment of troops to the border just before the 2018 midterm elections.
..."[t]rump’s ordering of the killing of a top Iranian general, which briefly appeared to bring the United States to the edge of war with Iran early this year, was a disappointment to the many veterans and service members who had supported him in part for his promise to end American involvement in overseas conflicts.
"'The news of wanting to deploy the military domestically has caused a huge sense of outrage among most families I know,' said Sarah Streyder, the director of the Secure Families Initiative, which advocates diplomacy-first foreign policy and works on behalf of military families. 'A lot of military families live on Facebook. Social media is very important for this transient community.'
"Numerous military spouses concurred. 'From what I see from my friends communicating online, spouses have grown much more vocal in opposition to policies,' said Kate Marsh Lord, a Democrat who is married to a member of the Air Force and lives in Virginia but votes in Ohio. 'I have seen more spouses speak out on issues of race and lack of leadership than in my entire 15 years as a military spouse.'
..."Roughly 40 percent of active-duty service people and reserves are people of color, underlining how the current moment has affected military families.
"'People took offense that they were using the military to calm peaceful protests by people of color who were out on the streets,' said Jerry Green, who served in the Army until 1998 and now lives in Tampa. 'When I saw that whole thing unfold, for me, personally, it was awful. I was really distraught.' Mr. Green, who is black, will not be supporting [t]rump, whom he once found interesting, he said.
..."'We believe that [t]rump’s support within the military, with military families and with veterans, is soft and receding,' said Jon Soltz, a founder of VoteVets, which has been increasingly successful in electing Democratic veterans. 'Our plan for the fall is simple: We’re putting together the most comprehensive data-driven veteran and military family get-out-the-vote operation the Democratic Party has ever seen, and we will deploy it to ensure [t]rump is a one-term *resident.'"

“Everything down there is awful and complicated, but up here it’s stripped back to bare bones. Back to what matters.”
“And what is that?” Jerry asked.
Alec tipped his face back, feeling the sun. “You said you wanted to kiss me.”
