I know this will likely reach him, but in every attempt to do so, there’s hope. I am not a fan; I am an admirer.

Dear Jeremy Lin,

Basketball in my daily life has been a fun hobby of watching determined men and women compete in court. It requires agility, strength, and strategy—both the mind and heart, or something like that. I’m no expert or avid fan of the said sport, but I feel the rush of excitement for the team I’m rooting for whenever I watch basketball games back in college.

For people such as yourself, the moment I inadvertently saw clips of you playing—I knew then that your basketball isn’t just a hobby. It’s your passion. It may sound exaggerated, but I saw the ball pass through your eyes like it’s your life.

This letter may take years to reach you, but when it does, the God my mother prayed to must have willed it. In fact, He probably thought it was purposeful to have known about you when I scrolled through my timeline and saw Steven Lim posting about how great you are as a human being.

People had been following your journey for a decade. I was years too late, and I’m not even a fan. I just saw you randomly on the internet and decided to watch clips of your game when you were still in Knicks.

As a non-religious person, it baffles me how you strengthen your faith in every obstacle you face. How are you still determined to continue head on? Recently, I read in an article that you broke down in tears while attending church.

Everyone knew the reason why.

I’m an admirer—of how you handled the outcome of your decisions every step of the way. Heck, people all over the internet and in the field of basketball know that you deserve better.

This mixed emotions I have for the hardships you’ve gone through—in the endless times you had to prove yourself to the world, when I genuinely know that the world of the NBA is the one who failed you and not yourself—broke my heart.

I admire you most for continuing to play in court and shedding a tear or two, but I couldn’t stand the fact that you’re robbed of the opportunity to tell the whole world how great you are at playing basketball. I couldn’t care less about the misconceptions about your skills. You already proved yourself in my eyes. You’re the man who worked hard to play on the floor, but still questioned himself if he deserves winning an award. Screw that, because I know you do. You deserve it more than anyone else.

I don’t pray, but just like how I, at times, talk to any good higher-being listening to guide the children I’m teaching, I would make another exemption—the exemption to pray that all your efforts to pursue your passion would inspire young Asian-American aspirants lead the world of basketball to a better place. Although I already know that you’re already doing that.

And I like your hair no matter what—even in dreadlocks.

Someday, if our paths crossed unexpectedly, I hope life does you better—in career, in family—in love. Everything.
