The best of everything at the 19th British Silent Film Festival
The best of everything at the 19th British Silent Film Festival
How to relate five days of silent and early sound cinema in a pithy blogpost form? I have honestly no idea, but here goes … The best film on Wednesday A small choice here, cos I am selecting only from the evening screening of Edgar Allan Poe shorts at St Mary de Castro church. The rest of the day was devoted to papers. This was a wonderfully atmospheric night event though, with the candlelit…

The space between documentarist & subject: the quietly radical ideas & ethics of Jenny Gilbertson. I am interested in the films of Jenny Gilbertson (1902-1990) & the nature, dynamics & ethics of relationships in documentary filmmaking. My practice-led research will consider the core question of how to create & sustain an ethical filmmaking relationship with the people you are filming. Alongside archival investigation & close study of Gilbertson’s films, I will visit the communities she filmed in Shetland & Arctic Canada (scheduled 2018) to visually explore her approach & my own before offering a critically reflective analysis of her legacy & its potential for contemporary documentary practice. Key interests: Women filmmakers; the history of documentary, ethical practice in documentary & realist filmmaking; representations of the people of the Northern Isles & the Arctic.

THE BASIC BRIEF – MAY 21ST, 2021
SUMMARY
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the driving story of the week. There were many pieces diving into the escalating situation. We included the New York Times’ dive into what events lead to the outbreak in violence though, for supporters of Palestine, the presumption that this isn’t an ongoing conflict, that there was a ‘quiet’ that was disturbed, is frustratingly tone-deaf. On Thursday, Israel and Hamas announced a cease-fire.
From last week’s Brief, we talked about Andrew Yang potentially being canceled for being off-the-mark with his Pro-Israeli commentary. This particular sub-story is part of a larger shift in the politics around Israel and Palestine which two items in the ‘Food for Thought’ section hit upon. Will Bunch draws a connection between raised social awareness of BLM to Palestinian support. And the Hill talks about this shift in politics with Ryan Grim noting just 7 years ago a politician got in trouble for Tweeting support for Palestine.
In other news, there are various talks of opening back up from the pandemic with Travel to Europe being less restricted and Mask policies being down-graded. There is a push for more stimulus relief with calls for recurring payments that could amount to a form of UBI. The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to a law in Mississippi that bans abortion after 15 weeks while legislation to expand the number of justices in the Supreme Court has been introduced.

There are just 10 more days to see the Moth Migration Project installed at Oak Hill Gallery in Mornington, V.I.C Australia. This is the third gallery in six months that the MMP has opened at in Australia. Each site hosted community-based moth making workshops, which either I taught or one of the gallery’s artists, and at times a combination of both.
Tumblr media
Here is a little peek at some of the installation shots from the show.
It has been an exciting six months. I flew to Brisbane at the end of April to install the Moth Migration Project in the Gympie Regional Gallery. Working with the amazing staff and Joolie Gibbs the gallery director, we installed a massive installation in record time. In under a week, the exhibition was up, I had three radio interviews, conducted a workshop and went on a gorgeous hike. Here is a brochure they designed for the exhibition along with public programs.
Tumblr media
I have loads of photos from Gympie, and I will highlight a few here. The gallery itself is massive, it is a beautiful and original School of Arts Building, built in 1905.

I then traveled to the Bundaberg Regional Gallery to meet with Jenny Gilbertson. With the help of their volunteers and volunteers from Childers Art Gallery, we installed the exhibition in 2 room and 2 halls. The architecture was much different between Gympie and Bundaberg and we had some fun features to play with.
The exhibition looked fantastic. We crowded the moths tight together from floor to ceiling as you can see here:

I am still exhausted but so pleased with these exhibitions. It was a thrill to be back in Australia, I had not been there in almost ten years when I was in residence at Lake St. Clair in Tasmania. I see a lot more time in Australia in my near future.
I want to thank everyone for coming out, for being a part of this massively growing project. If you are interested in learning more about the MMP, please see the website at mothmigrationproject.net

BLIBBER - BLABBER
Some blibber-blabber I blabbered all over, likely to be incinerated:
Arketype is an attempt to draw a link between contemporary climate change and patriarchal structures through a retelling of the world’s most widely known flood narrative – Noah’s Ark. In this work, Genesis 6-8 will be positioned as a foundational point in the creation of the traditional male archetype, which has found a new incarnation within Glasgow as the environmentally-conscious, design-savvy, hipster.
WhatArketype will ultimately argue is that rising sea levels and global warming will not have an equal effect on everyone, impacting different groups in different ways (the focus for Arketype is specifically gender) and ultimately impacting the group who are most directly responsible for it (white western affluent males) the least. The argument is broadly speaking an eco-feminist position, a lens for writing the work that I will engage with through the theories and practices of eco-feminist philosophers and artists, as well as through interviews self-conducted with women currently working in the fields of environmental research, advocacy and protection.
The masculinity presented in the work is also envisioned through this lens, considering the notion of ‘toxic masculinity’ and the process of how this way of being in the world is transmitted between generations. The aim is to present this in a darkly humorous light, that is both generous to the individuals involved and severe in its criticality of the damage the male figures in this play are doing to each other and to the world. In this way, the family unit depicted will act as a microcosm for the wider structures of society. Artistic context for this depiction of masculinity includes Casey Affleck’s performance in A Ghost Story, Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure, Glasgow’s hipster design culture and the film JAWS.
The eco-feminist frame of the work will also bleed into how I hope to use language, principally the writings of Hélène Cixous (la ecriture feminine – ‘the female writing’) and Peggy Phelan, who both wrote extensively on the search for non-normative modes of writing and speaking; ways of using language that can escape patriarchal structures. These theories will heavily influence the manner in which language changes within the work, particular in how the characters of Set and Nora relate to and use it. Further reference points for the role of women in highland landscapes include the photographers MEM Donaldson, Jenny Gilbertson and Margaret Fay Shaw, as well as the filmmaker Margaret Tait.
Concerning language, the other significant reference point is Yorgos Lanthimos’ writing in the films Dogtooth and Lobster. His use of stilted dialogue, privatised communication methods and jarring semantic shifts (words not meaning what they should) creates a sense of familial alienation that Arketype will similarly employ – a world in which something seems off, but everything looks familiar.
