When he saw the smoke, south of the Beaufort Sea, he ordered his crew to investigate in case it was a signal from the lost explorer – but when they reached the hills, there was no sign of life.  According to Atlas Obscura, it was reported that the crew took a piece of smouldering rock back to the boat for Captain McClure – and that it burned a hole right through his wooden desk.  The crew were convinced that volcanic activity was causing the hills to burn. However, it soon became apparent that there was a different reason altogether for the strange phenomenon. The nearest community to the Smoking Hills lies more than 60 miles away – the hamlet of Paulatuk The smoke is caused by layers of sulphur-rich lignite – brown coal – igniting as erosion and landslides expose them. Britons reveal the top 30 things they love the most about staycations – and it’s coastal walks that’s No1 followed by fish and chips and countryside strolls
Also making the top 30 is strolling along a pier and drinking in a beer garden
But buying a stick of rock at the seaside didn’t quite make the top 30 ranking
Research also showed a third of Britons are likely to opt for a staycation this year

Britons have revealed the top 30 things they love the most about UK staycations with coastal walks topping the list followed by fish and chips and rambling through the countryside.
Researchers asked UK adults what their favourite things about holidaying closer to home are, with sightseeing coming fourth and visiting the seaside fifth.
The rest of the top 10 comprises strolling along a pier (sixth), a cold drink in a beer garden (seventh), Sunday lunches at the pub (eighth), avoiding airports (ninth) and tucking into Mr Whippy ice creams (10th).
Britons have revealed the top 30 things they love the most about UK staycations, with coastal walks taking the No1 spot. Pictured is Cuckmere Haven in East Sussex
Having picnics (12th), playing on penny pusher machines at the arcade (15th) and miniature golf (24th) also feature in the top 30 ranking, along with not having to worry about creepy crawlies as you do when you go abroad (28th).
But sadly, the British seaside tradition of buying sticks of rock didn’t quite make the top 30 list.
According to the research, commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages, more than eight in 10 adults have been on a British holiday previously, and 29 per cent already have plans for one this year.
The study also found that Britons enjoy UK breaks for the nostalgia factor, the often shorter travel time, being able to speak the language and the opportunity to take the dog with them.
And more than a third reckon they are more likely to opt for a holiday at home this year.
Nearly three-fifths are going on a staycation as they just want to get away from their home, while a third want to avoid flying due to coronavirus. A fifth are simply hoping to save a bit of money.
Britons said the second best thing about a UK staycation is fish and chips
TOP 30 THINGS BRITONS LOVE THE MOST ABOUT STAYCATIONS
1. Walks on the coast
2. Eating fish and chips
3. Long, countryside walks
4. Going sightseeing
5. The great British seaside
6. Strolling along the pier
7. A cold drink in a beer garden
8. Sunday lunches at the pub
9. Avoiding airports
10. Tucking into Mr Whippy/ 99 flake ice creams
11. Not having a luggage limit
12. Picnics
13. Feeling like you’re doing your bit for the UK economy
14. Reading a book
15. Using 2p machines in the arcades
16. Barbecues
17. Jumping the waves in the sea
18. Going away with extended family members
19. Amusement arcades
20. The car journey on the way there
21. Being snuggled up indoors, sitting around a fire
22. Eating fresh ring doughnuts
23. Building sandcastles
24. Playing mini golf
25. Going to funfairs/on fairground rides
26. Camping trips
27. Bike rides
28. Not having to worry about creepy crawlies
29. Playing card games
30. Aquariums
Source: Skyes Holiday Cottage
It also emerged that 44 per cent plan to take a trip down memory lane by returning to British destinations they visited as a child.
Top of the list of holiday spots people plan to return to is Cornwall, followed by neighbouring Devon and scenic Scotland.
Creating memories with their own child is among the top reasons for wanting to revisit these locations as well as knowing it will be a trip loved by their whole family.
In fact, two-thirds agreed that some of the best holidays they had as a child were with their family on a staycation.
A further four in 10 said it’s the little things that happen on a holiday that make it enjoyable and memorable – not necessarily plush locations or extravagant beachside resorts.
The research, conducted via OnePoll, which polled 2,000 UK adults, also found more than six in 10 want a holiday to try and find some normality outside of social distancing and the lockdown.
Taking a long walk through the UK countryside is Britons’ third favourite thing about staycations
Taking fourth place in the ranking of the best things about staycations is sightseeing
And 57 per cent also reckon they will do more staycations even when the pandemic is over.
Graham Donoghue, chief executive of Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: ‘Whether it’s snuggling up by the fire on a cold day, jumping waves in the sea or tucking into freshly baked doughnuts, the UK really does have something for everyone.
‘A holiday is a time to rest, do things you enjoy and make memories with your family which, given the last few months, is even more important.
‘After a lot of time cooped up indoors, I’m in no doubt that Britons are simply looking forward to a change of scenery.
‘We constantly get told that it’s the little things and moments of a break away that really make it extra special, but this is definitely reflected in the results.
‘Everyone needs downtime, but there really isn’t a need to go abroad when we’ve got everything right here on our doorstep.’

The Grand Park Kodhipparu resort in the Maldives offers ‘net beds’ in all its over-water accommodation, and guests have been quick to realise the Instagram potential of being photographed on them.
Travellers have posted countless pictures on social media of themselves lying mere feet above turquoise water, drifting off under the stars, topping up their tans and generally looking rather content with proceedings.
The Grand Park Kodhipparu resort has special net beds that are suspended over the Indian Ocean. Pictured is Qalisha Ray taking a nap on the bed during a recent visit to the resort
The beds have caught the eye of travel bloggers and Instagrammers, who have posted countless pictures on social media. The image on the left was posted by Bellafrisca and the image on the right by neng_ida
Arushi Gupta, the resort’s marketing manager, told MailOnline Travel: ‘The over-water beds have proven to be one of the most Instagrammable spots’
One Instagrammer, Qalisha Ray, who posted a picture of herself relaxing on one of the beds, wrote: ‘Spent most of my time here, cause nothing beats falling asleep to the sound of the gentle ocean.’
Neng Ida posted a picture of herself on Instagram enjoying a glass of wine on one of the beds and wrote: ‘Enjoying my sunset.’
While Bella Frisca said the beds were the perfect place for simply ‘day-dreaming’.
Arushi Gupta, the resort’s marketing manager, told MailOnline Travel: ‘Each villa, apart from the beach villas, have the over-water beds installed and they have proven to be one of the most Instagrammable spots.
‘We receive an overwhelming response from our guests all of the time.’

BA service from London City to Dusseldorf ends up in Edinburgh
Welcome to Scotland! BA passengers bound for Germany end up in EDINBURGH after pilot is given the wrong flight plan
The BA flight, operated by WDL Aviation, was due to head east towards Germany
But instead it headed north and just an hour after leaving, it landed in Edinburgh
Passengers on board the flight took to Twitter to complain about the diversion
By Jennifer Newton for MailOnline

British Airways passengers have spoken of their shock after boarding a plane to Dusseldorf – that ended up in Edinburgh.
The flight, BA3271, set off from London City airport at 7.47am today and was supposed to head east to Germany.
But the pilot on the service – operated by Germany-based WDL Aviation on a ‘wet lease’ arrangement with BA – was given a flight plan that directed him to the Scottish capital and he touched down there at 9am.
British Airways passengers on board a leased WDL Aviation-operated flight from London City Airport to Dusseldorf ended up in Edinburgh after the pilot of the aircraft was given the wrong flight plan
Passengers on board the service only realised they were at the wrong destination after the plane landed and a ‘welcome to Edinburgh’ announcement was made.
Some on board took to Twitter to complain about the very unexpected diversion.
One passenger, called Son Tran, tweeted BA to ask: ‘Can you please explain how can my morning flight taking off from LCY to Düsseldorf land in Edinburgh?
‘While an interesting concept, I don’t think anyone on board has signed up for this mystery travel lottery… #BA3271.’
Mr Tran then followed up his first tweet with more information about the flight: ‘This feels like an honest mistake rather than a diversion. The crew was convinced of the Edinburgh flight path from the get-go…’
Another passenger, Chris McGrillen, added: ‘The first announcement the crew made about the destination was as we were coming in to land. Boarding passes weren’t checked.
‘Given this flight is operated by a third party (WDL) BA clearly needs to specify best practices (a ‘Welcome to your flight to Edinburgh’) for 3rd parties.’
Several of the passengers who were on board the plane took to Twitter to complain about the unexpected diversion
After the unplanned stop in Scotland, the plane refuelled and set off from Edinburgh at 10.30am on its second attempt to reach Düsseldorf.
British Airways told MailOnline Travel: ‘We are working with WDL Aviation, who operated this flight on behalf of British Airways, to establish why the incorrect flight plan was filed.
‘We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually.’
A spokesman for WDL Aviation added: ‘We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how the obviously unfortunate mix-up of flight schedules could occur.
After the unplanned stop in Scotland, the plane refuelled and set off from Edinburgh, pictured, at 10.30am on its second attempt to reach Düsseldorf
‘At no time has the safety of passengers been compromised. We flew the five passengers on the flight with number BA3271 to Düsseldorf after the involuntary stopover in Edinburgh.’
Meanwhile a spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: ‘We’re a welcoming airport that is always happy to greet visitors from all over the world to our fantastic city, but this was a surprise for us as well as them!
‘We were happy to work with the various teams across the airport to help make the trip to Edinburgh a pleasurable, albeit short, one.’
The five passengers on BA3271 eventually landed safely in Dusseldorf, pictured

Fictional Male Career Interview Stories part two of at least a 2 to 3 week or longer series in this entry

Fictional Male Career Interview Stories part two-Connected From Aimee Gates in Heaven Afterlife Series 16
gathering multiple resources yet before commenting on some website links such as yahoo, daily mail uk, daily meal etc. and others;1256 pm
completion time 135 pm yet I intend to resume tonight after work andor first thing tomorrow morning by 9am or sooner
Billy Lawson here in the year March 2118. I work as a human resources consultant and an intuitive career coach for the University of Maryland College Park inside one of a gymnasium where a speaking event is about to take place. It is more commonly and socially accepted to have psychic abilities in this time period and I frequently help many male and female clients who are referred to me by Aimee Gates. In a few minutes, two men are going to speak inside one of the University of Maryland College Park gymnasiums within the next 5 minutes or less, one is a public relations specialist for the U.S. Navy reserve and works on the Andrews Airforce Base in Maryland and the second one is a male chef on one of the MSC ships both based out of Norfolk Virginia. I just helped one of the female attendees attending this speaking event try to make out part of her dream but I was told by one of her male celestial spirit guides that she is to figure out the rest of her the sleeptime dream on her own and have faith that she is going to in perfect timing-the sleeptime dream she had and I am sharing with her permission
In the sleeptime dream she saw a coworker connected to her late mother yet working at a particular station hawking recipes 50 years into the future. The female explained to her that she was asked to keep her identity a secret yet to just call her Jessica. Jessica pointed the sleeptime dreaming female's attention to one of the companies food related in  her area and asked her to keep the name secret for the time being yet that the name is going to be important for her to remember soon. Seconds later, she is transported into a different part of her workplace and she is all of a sudden watching with her husband the specter of some type of giant potato looking bug going towards an ambigous looking bug much smaller than this potato looking bug. However rather than put up a fight for their life this much smaller bug welcomes the chance with bliss to be eaten even if it means the end of their current existence on earth. This makes the giant looking potato bug crave this smaller bug even more and happily lifts the smaller unindentified bug off to a secret place to eat it. The female whose identity I must guard explained to me that she woke up shortly after her husband playfully shrugged his shoulders at this sight in an oh well fashion and all the female could remember is that the smaller ambiguous creature's existence was partially for the nourishment and eating pleasure of the larger potato looking big and both creatures were driven to be influenced by some type of spiritual force outside of them. Less than 3 hours upon waking, she sees an article about home buying and wonders how both events relate to her career interests. All I Billy Lawson can tell her is that she is wise and accurate that her life path involves just one or two of those career paths but that she has to figure out in her own time the significance of the smaller ambiguous creature being happy to be consumed/eaten by the large potato looking bug even knowing it is the end of their current life (the smaller ambiguous creature). All I Billy Lawson could tell this female who had that strange sleeptime dream was that she must trust that the smaller ambiguous creature went to a better place in multiple ways even though they were being taken to a secret undisclosed place to be consumed/eaten by the larger potato looking bug more for the potato bugs pleasure and beneficial consumption and the clue was that the smaller creature was aware despite its appearance that it was in the larger potato bug's life more for their benefit and pleasure to consume by the way they willingly readied themselves to be taken and eaten and that there was a higher reason for it spiritually as it relates to the female client in her waking life making up her mind and desire to connect the sleeptime dream with the house article, recipe images in her dream, and gaining greater clarity on her career paths
due to time needed to give myself to get ready for work I must postpone typing in the career info of the MSC chef and navy reserve public relations person until later on tonight after work. However, I Stella Carrier give thanks for everyone who looks at my online writings and I pledge to try to include at least 8 to 10 andor more fictional career interview series in at least this entry andor more ideally at least 12.
I Stella Carrier Humbly Call Upon What I Imagine To Be The Influence of Benevolent Spirits From the Heavenly Realms, my higher self, and my celestial spirit ally team for creativity in both my writings and all other areas of my life both present and future. I'm intuitively aware that I'm taking a risky by saying this yet I do believe that a universal basic income is definitely something that is going to be an eventual reality in the United States by the year 2100 or sooner even with the abundance of jobs available across the United States. This is because cost of living is going up quite a bit in housing, food, and other costs that a certain baseline income is going to be needed to pay for the essentials both for people who have government assistance and people who are blessed to make a living government assistance free. Please know that even though I am fortunate to be government assistance free I am open minded about people who need government assistance to get by as everyone's socio-economic status is different. I can only speak for myself yet if I am ever gifted with a universal basic income I would still want to work at least 30 hours or more employment each week. I am gifted with a good paying job with good leadership yet I reluctantly admit that the extra money would take care of my concern as to the steps to take to legally secure myself an income from May to August each year. Additionally, I would use some of that extra money to pad increase my savings accounts and contribute to basic costs that would help my sweet husband. My main point; I am going to take a safe bet and imply that more people would still want to continue working whatever job they were employed in even if given the extra money from universal basic income.

Owning a completely paid for home for both my husband and I is actually an important dream to me and my husband and the potential reality of owning a home in 5 years excites me even with the responsibilities involved. I feel lucky to have caught this in my yahoo newsfeed as coming across this five year home plan goal is also going to help give me greater clarity in my career and money goals.

Peru’s Machu Picchu to reopen at 50 per cent capacity – with just 2,244 people allowed in each day
Peru’s Machu Picchu site to reopen at 50 per cent capacity – with just 2,244 people allowed in each day
The new limit is a bid to avoid the gradual deterioration of the Unesco site
Before the pandemic, Machu Picchu welcomed up to 5,000 people a day
The Peruvian government has not yet set a date for the reopening of the site

Peru’s iconic tourist attraction Machu Picchu will reopen at half capacity following a coronavirus-forced closure, the Peruvian government said, although it didn’t set a date.
‘Admission to Machu Picchu will be 2,244 visitors a day,’ the government announced in the official gazette.
That’s half the number of tourists usually allowed into the ancient Inca citadel in the high season.

The new limit has been suggested by international experts in a bid to avoid the gradual deterioration of the crown jewel of Peruvian tourism, which has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1983.
The new limited capacity has nothing to do with the coronavirus, though, and is part of measures the culture ministry was planning on taking anyway.
The implementation was delayed by the country’s virus lockdown.
Before the pandemic struck, Machu Picchu used to welcome between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors a day, with peaks of 5,000 in the high season.
It was due to reopen on July 1 at a limited capacity of just 675 visitors a day with social distancing measures – but that plan was abandoned over fears it could contribute to infections spreading in neighbouring towns.
Peru’s borders have been closed for almost four months as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed almost 11,000 people and infected more than 300,000.
The city of Cusco, pictured, which is 42 miles from Machu Picchu, employs 100,000 people in the tourism industry
It is the third-worst affected country in Latin America for deaths and second-worst hit in terms of cases.
The government stepped up security at Machu Picchu, which last closed to visitors in 2010 after a flood damaged the access railway, during the lockdown to prevent thefts of archaeological treasures.
The Peruvian tourism industry has suffered losses totalling $3.3billion (£2.6billion) this year, according to Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos.
In the city of Cusco, the ancient Incan capital 42 miles (70km) from Machu Picchu, tourism employs 100,000 people.

Canada sees 'light pillars' dancing above houses after sunshine and snow combine

Extraordinary images captured in Canada have shown rare light pillars beaming up to the sky above the houses after a combination of sunshine and snow.

They then reflect artificial light coming from street lights, neon signs and even homes to create the…
