Remember the Batman V Superman Jeep Renegade Dawn of Justice edition? Built to release with the movie in 2016 this special edition included standard popular equipment group in addition to all the Batman black. Now imagine a customer walking into a dealer store looking for replacement of its dual zone climate control. The dealer says they don’t carry it any longer and neither are they able to locate one that does.
Automotive companies where part identification and reporting diversity has proliferated across storage locations & production units lose the ability of sharing parts inventory between sister dealers. In turn this makes availability check and response to opportunistic spares sales situations super hard to service.
Customers looking to replace that climate control now has to wait for days as dealer agents navigate through store systems to confirm earliest availability.
Systems unaware of alternates (after all Dawn of Justice used the same climate control as many other Jeep models) and unable to understand that Stock, Qty, Availability mean the same - have no way of responding to that waiting customer.
On the input side too, without harmonized view of inventory, centralized procurement department created to drive economies of scale, does very little in rationalizing vendors or simplifying supply chain.
It’s not uncommon to receive call from a Telco’s local sales team offering an upgrade, just a day after one has signed up for same on the web. New 2020 Jeep® Wrangler EcoDiesel: Ultimate Fuel Efficiency and Driving Range, With 442 lb.-ft. of Torque for Improved Performance
The most capable SUV ever will soon be available with the most fuel-efficient and highest torque-rated Wrangler engine ever with the introduction of the new 2020 Jeep® Wrangler EcoDiesel. The expected fuel economy ratings will deliver the highest driving range on one tank of fuel ever for Wrangler.
Wrangler four-door models will offer the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine, rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque, with engine stop-start (ESS) technology standard. To handle greater torque loads, the EcoDiesel V-6 connects to a newly added TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission, calibrated for low RPM shifts and the on- and off-road rigors of Jeep Wrangler duty. There are more than 40 individual shift maps to optimize shift points for fuel economy, performance and 4x4 capability.

All Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel models – Sport, Sahara and Rubicon – feature third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles. Additionally, all Wrangler EcoDiesel models feature a 3.73 axle ratio. Two transfer cases are offered: the Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio on Rubicon models and the Command-Trac part-time two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio on Sport and Sahara models. 
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2019.
All-new EcoDiesel engine The third generation of the turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine delivers increased torque and horsepower, along with superb fuel economy and minimal levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to meet the needs of Wrangler customers.
Several significant changes contribute to the new EcoDiesel’s improved dynamic and fuel economy performance:
A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine (VGT) and low-friction bearing increases efficiency and responsiveness during transient conditions
Redesigned cylinder head intake ports with higher flow capability improve swirl and flow, increasing performance and fuel economy
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system design has been updated to a dual loop (low and high pressure) system. The added low-pressure circulation system draws gases after the diesel particulate filter, thus minimizing turbocharger energy losses, which increases fuel economy
The compression ratio has been optimized to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1 to improve fuel economy and reduce engine noise
High-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were redesigned to match the newly designed and optimized combustion chamber, reducing fuel consumption
Lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were completely redesigned to include thinner rings and low-friction diamond-like carbon coating on the pin and compression piston ring to reduce parasitic losses
NVH has been improved by offsetting the piston pin 0.3 millimeters from the centerline
The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a lightweight sandwiched polymer/metal material, which further reduces NVH
The dual vacuum pump system uses electric and a new mechanical low-friction pump with new blades that improve overall system efficiency
These upgrades build on the EcoDiesel V-6 engine’s previous success, the attributes and performance of which made it a winner of "Wards 10 Best Engines" for three consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016).
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 uses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The block is cast with compacted graphite iron, which provides strength to dampen vibrations, but weighs less than gray cast iron. A compacted graphite iron bedplate adds rigidity to the block.   The EcoDiesel V-6 engine uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods for strength and durability. The aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads use individual bearing caps to reduce friction and minimize NVH. The chain-driven overhead camshafts employ roller-finger followers.
The diesel engine’s turbo Charge Air Cooler (CAC) is located at the base of the grille, in front of the radiator, to maximize cooler temperatures. The CAC uses the same mounting position as in the four-cylinder gasoline turbo engine, helping to reduce complexity. 
A new 5.1-gallon diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank is located immediately behind the fuel tank with refill location next to the diesel fuel filler. DEF refills align with oil changes lasting up to 10,000 miles. Levels are monitored via a new DEF gauge in the front cluster.

2018 Subaru Crosstrek Long-Term Verdict: Still a Solid CUV After One Year?
Driving back from a day of off-roading at Hungry Valley, I detoured through some canyon roads near Malibu. Still feeling the adrenaline from the 4×4 practice area of the park, I pushed the little Subie harder than ever. Tires were squealing, and my heart was racing. This might sound crazy, but the lifted hatchback can be flogged through corners harder than most small-crossover competitors before the all-season tires raise the white flag. Back on the highway, I couldn’t help but think how multitalented the Crosstrek is.
After a year in a 2018 Crosstrek, we can confirm that the MotorTrend favorite doesn’t just cover the basics better than most. It’s also great at extracurricular activities. Around town, the Crosstrek rides very well, soaking up bumps, dips, and imperfections like a premium vehicle and with almost zero rattling. On a horribly rough freeway on-ramp near our office, many other vehicles bounce around, emitting jingles and jangles while the steering wheel shakes side to side. Not in the Crosstrek, which irons out the ramp without any steering wheel drama. Much of this has to do with its very solid chassis. I intentionally hit bumps and dips when I test cars, and the Crosstrek barely noticed. With its 8.7 inches of ground clearance, I never worried about bottoming out on dips.
The comfortable ride continues off the asphalt. Bumps, ruts, and rocks are nicely absorbed by the Stablex dampers. At one point in Hungry Valley, I found myself driving down a dirt road at 40 mph as if I was in some kind of Baja desert race. A quick twist of the steering wheel induced a fun and controlled slide. As I discovered in my off-roading adventure, mud, sand, rocks, and ruts didn’t stop the Crosstrek. And although most owners will keep it on asphalt, it should be nice to know that this little thing off-roads better than most expect.
I wasn’t able to off-road in the snow, but the Crosstrek’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with X-Mode should make easy work of it. Driving in the rain was actually lots of fun thanks to the loads of traction. For kicks, I would pull away from a stoplight very quickly without any wheel spin, leaving all others far behind me. In the event of having to make a quick turn on a busy street with speeding cars, have no fear, as breaking traction even in the rain is difficult.
Considering the Crosstrek’s competitive set, the spacious cabin is styled well and has many quality parts that sometimes make you forget you’re in Subaru’s cheapest crossover. The orange stitching on the seats and steering wheel pop, there are plenty of textured and soft-touch surfaces, the blinker and wiper stalks don’t feel flimsy, and most buttons and switches feel good. The rearview camera has sharp resolution, but I wish the 6.5-inch touchscreen was a little larger. (An 8.0-inch screen is available on Limited and hybrid models; our tester was a midlevel Premium.) My favorite interior component is something you constantly touch, the steering wheel. The grips are large, the leather feels good, the paddle shifters are easily flickable, and it looks good. But the best part is actually the feel. When I review other cars, it’s rare for one to have better steering feel. The Crosstrek’s is almost perfectly weighted and very precise, with a decent amount of feedback (rare for the segment), and its quick ratio is fun when pushing it. This is something the Crosstrek doesn’t need, but it’s refreshing to see in a crossover. It’s also one of the reasons why the Subie handles so well.
Plenty of staffers used the Subaru for long trips, and for good reason. Besides the comfort level, the Crosstrek has a large 16.6-gallon tank and delivers 33 mpg on the highway with the CVT. The rear seats are roomy, and the cargo area should be large enough for most. Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto) keeps passengers entertained, and if there is an emergency, simply hit the SOS call button near the map lights. Additionally, even though visibility is good, the added assistance of the large yellow warning light of the blind-spot monitoring system will help keep things safe. If your trip is in the mountains, engine braking is surprisingly strong, and the paddle shifters are responsive.
But like any vehicle, there are plenty of ways to improve the little Subaru. In my third update I complained about its nonlinear acceleration, lack of a proximity key with push-start ignition for the price (the feature becomes standard on the higher Limited trim), and door locks that don’t automatically lock or unlock (even when you drive away). Another thing about those door locks: When locked, pulling the handle won’t open the door like in many vehicles; you have to press the unlock button or manually unlock it. Getting out of a modern-day car shouldn’t require an extra step, and it could slow you down in case of an emergency.
I was always surprised with how many people complimented our Crosstrek’s exterior color.
I addressed the Crosstrek’s just-adequate acceleration in my track-day update. Speaking of acceleration, when driving the Crosstrek hard, the CVT engages what feels like a temporary Sport mode (an official Sport mode doesn’t exist) by becoming extra responsive. This is fine when having fun, but it can be annoying when you aren’t. For example, if you apply a lot of throttle to beat traffic, be careful when you press the gas again; even a light application will result in a jerk because the transmission still thinks you want to go fast.
As much as I like the interior for the price point, I see room for improvement. The instrument cluster and small display screen look cheap and old, and so does the small upper center display screen. But those can be upgraded with the Limited or hybrid trims. The steering wheel column cover looks like a piece of construction paper, the heated seat switches and X-Mode buttons aren’t up to par, and the center stack looks plain. I‘m a big fan of quality-feeling shifters, like the Limited and hybrid models have. Our Premium trim tester’s sounds and feels clunky. Additionally, I wish the USB ports were front facing, rear HVAC vents should be available, and more interior color is needed—the cabin is too dark. Lastly, the infotainment system is easy to use, and Apple CarPlay connects quickly, though it needs to react quicker to your inputs. There’s a significant delay between your finger touching the screen and the system responding.
The Crosstrek proved to be reliable during our 13 months and 20,939 miles in it. We took it into the dealership three times for scheduled maintenance (7,500-mile intervals) and replaced a tire due to a slow leak from a gash in the sidewall. During one of the dealership visits, a recall for the stereo head unit was completed free of charge, but I never noticed any connectivity issues. The maintenance visits totaled $281.85, and the new tires cost $248.91. We averaged 25.9 mpg, a bit below the 2018 Crosstrek’s 27/33 mpg city/highway EPA ratings but within the 24.5/35.1 mpg results from our EQUA Real MPG testing. Our former long-term Jeep Renegade cost us $67.35 in scheduled maintenance, but that was with half the miles; had the Renegade been driven a comparable 20,000 miles, its maintenance visits still would have been $100 or more below the Crosstrek. Our long-term Honda HR-V ($149.29 for two service visits over 20,348 miles) was also cheaper to maintain. A 2016 Mazda CX-3 tester ($534.34 over 35,386 miles and four service visits) was also cheaper to maintain per mile.
With a bit more power and some interior upgrades, the Subaru Crosstrek would be damn near perfect for a crossover. Despite its shortcomings, we’re sorry to see the Crosstrek leave our long-term fleet.

Rare were the days when I wished my Renegade weren’t as basic as it was. (That said, many consumers will probably find they’ll be happier with a higher trim and a few more goodies.)
Power is provided by a 180-hp 2.4-liter I-4, standard on the Limited and Trailhawk trims but a $1,330 option here, and it comes paired with a nine-speed automatic. In previous testing, our editors frequently criticized the transmission, finding it clunky and easily confused about the preferable gear. However, short of one failed attempt at a late freeway pass and occasionally frustrating on-ramp acceleration, the transmission never gave me any issues. If you know your car, know yourself, and pay attention to your surroundings, the Renegade’s powertrain should be adequate in all but the most extreme circumstances. “Adequate” barely describes our average fuel economy, though; over the course of the loan, we saw 21.9 mpg, which is barely better than the much bigger and much older Ford Explorer I had been driving before. I would expect a bit better for such a small vehicle, and indeed, many of the Renegade’s subcompact peers, such as our long-term 2016 Mazda CX-3 (28.1 average mpg) and 2016 Honda HR-V (27.8), will beat it handily at the pump.
That mpg average would’ve been even lower without a 2,000-mile road trip to southwest Colorado, where I made a few passing attempts at “Jeep things.” We’re not talking Easter Jeep Safari here, but the Renegade did comfortably tackle trails that I wouldn’t have even considered in my old Explorer (and would’ve given a 2008 CR-V, my other personal daily driver, pause). Most modern SUVs with off-road pretensions would likely handle similar trails with comparable aplomb, but for those in the market for their first new car—or first in a while—the Renegade could be an upgrade in this regard, opening up new options for adventurers who previously stayed on glamping paths.
There’s a limit to how much we can say about the Renegade’s long-term durability. Our goal is 20,000 miles on the odometer after a year. I only got about halfway there. My one long trip resulted in an engagement, and the rest of the year was spent saving for the wedding, not splurging on weekend getaways, so I accumulated the majority of our miles on my short daily commute. As such, I can’t say whether a door handle would’ve fallen off, as happened late in the loan with our last long-term Jeep. I also can’t easily compare maintenance costs to other vehicles we’ve had in our fleet. I spent $67.35 out of pocket for the single required service stop. Had we made it to our 20,000-mile goal, the Renegade’s second service would have required a new cabin air filter, putting maintenance costs in the same ballpark as our 2HR-V ($149.29 for two service stops over 20,348 miles). Our CX-3 racked up $534.34 in routine maintenance, but that was over 35,386 miles and four service stops.
It’s tempting to harp on this entry-level Jeep for what it’s not. It’s not all the modern tech in a budget package. It’s not a roomy people hauler, and it’s not a sporty utility vehicle you can race down winding back roads. Some have even said it’s not a “real” Jeep. It’s more instructive, however, to focus on what the Renegade actually is. My 2017 Renegade Sport 4×4 was refreshingly simple, with ample room for a young family or a small group of friends. You won’t be carving canyons in it, but you can probably explore them. If you’re looking for a vehicle where the drive is the story, the Renegade probably isn’t for you. But if you’re seeking an affordable prologue for a tale you intend to write yourself, you could do much worse.
