De verlichte staat is niet, zoals algemeen wordt aangenomen, een buitengewone staat. Het is juist de onverlichte staat die magisch, mysterieus en onbegrijpelijk is. 

Ontwaakt is gewoon ontwaakt. Het betekent niet iets méér hebben, maar juist minder. De toestand waar ik in ben is natuurlijk en gemakkelijk. Ik sleep geen bagage met me mee. Ik ben niet het slachtoffer van begoocheling. Ik gebruik mijn levenskracht niet om een fictief personage te bezielen. 

Het is de onontwaakte staat die vol tegenstrijdigheden zit.  Mensen die zijn ontwaakt hebben niet iets wat zij die niet zijn ontwaakt missen, het is juist andersom. 

Onontwaakte mensen bezitten gigantische structuren gebaseerd op onware overtuigingen. Hele werelden scheppen ze, gebaseerd op verleden, heden en toekomst, belangrijke werelden vol grootste betekenissen en van een enorme emotionele rijkdom en diepgang, en dat alles bij elkaar geweven uit absoluut niets. Iets wat voortkomt uit niets: dat is pas magie, dat is pas een buitengewone staat. En het is juist de onontwaakte staat die een dergelijke inzet en toewijding vereist en die zo fantastisch onaannemelijk lijkt. Daarbij vergeleken stelt verlichting niets voor.

There is no hardship, there’s only the next thing, the next step, the next battle. The point is always to get the next door unlocked. The bible says to pluck out your eye if it offends you. If Alexander’s eye were preventing him from opening the next door, it wouldn’t occur to him not to remove it. That’s the fuel that drives this journey. It’s not in scriptures or temples. It’s no one’s to give or withhold. That’s what I mean by purity of intent.
