Are you still in love with Ney?
Unfortunately, Soult is currently out, and his letters are being answered by the very drunk and enthusiastic ADCs.
Bory: GENTLEMEN AND LADIES!
As inspired by this letter from a brave citizen, I, Lieutenent Colonel Bory de Saint-Vincent, have a very good and excellent idea!
Saint-Chamans: What a great idea that won't get us yelled at in any way by the Marshal when he gets back!
Lameth: As I have said in the past, I think the perfect ship is the Duc de Dalmatie~
Petiet: This isn't a binding ballot by the way... I hope...

JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY
JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY
1632-1687
Italian-French composer at Louis XIV's court stabbed himself with staff and died
Lully was born into a Tuscan family of corn millers and was given music lessons in his youth. In 1646, he dressed as a Harlequin for Mardi Gras which attracted the attention of Roger de Lorraine, who invited him back to France to be friends with his niece and he became her ‘chamber boy’ from 1647-1652. He was musically talented and went from her household to become a musician, composer, and dancer at the French royal court.
In 1653, he caught the attention of Louis XIV ‘Sun King’, who quickly made him the royal composer. In 1662, Lully married Madeleine Lambert the daughter of composer Michel Lambert.
In 1683, Queen Marie Therese died and the king secretly married Mme de Maintenon, and he no longer had enthusiasm for opera as he once had. Louis XIV was also put off by Lully’s lifestyle and his homosexual encounters.
In 1687, Lully struck his foot with his conducting staff during a performance and died from gangrene. He refused to have his leg amputated because he wanted to continue to dance. The gangrene spread through his body and infected his brain which killed him. He died in Paris and was buried in the church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, where his tomb still exists today.
Boris Terral portrayed Lully in the film Le Roi Danse (King is Dancing) (2000).

Dita Parlo and Jean Dasté in L'Atalante (Jean Vigo, 1934)
Cast: Dita Parlo, Jean Dasté, Michel Simon, Gilles Margaritis, Louis Lefebvre, Maurice Gilles, Raphaël Diligent. Screenplay: Jean Guinet, Albert Riéra, Jean Vigo. Cinematography: Boris Kaufman. Art direction: Francis Jourdan. Film editing: Louis Chavance. Music: Maurice Jaubert.
L'Atalante is one of those near-universally acclaimed film masterpieces that failed theatrically on their first release and were rediscovered and re-evaluated more than a decade later. But it's also one of those films that young contemporary movie lovers may not "get" on first viewing today. I remember my own reaction to films like The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir, 1939) and L'Avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1960), movies that didn't fit what I expected from being raised on energetic, plot-driven, star-centered American movies. Melancholy and irony are not widely praised American values, although lord knows we have plenty of it in the best American literature. They surfaced for a time in the best American films of the 1970s, but have been driven back into the underground by the blockbuster mentality. There was a time, even after the great cinematic awakening of the '70s when I found myself resenting film critics for their inability to appreciate popular movies I liked: "Critics see too many movies to enjoy them," I sniffed. But the truth is, the more movies you see, the more you're able to appreciate those that don't walk the line, that don't instantly gratify the hunger for plot resolution, for spectacle, for something that sends you out of the theater blissfully untroubled by thought. L'Atalante confused and bored its contemporary viewers, but today those of us who love it do so because it seems to us alternately tender and brutal, simultaneously comic and touching, and, taken as a whole, one of the few movies that successfully transport us to a time and place and a company of human beings we have never found ourselves in the middle of before. It is also, despite years of mishandling and cutting and botched attempts at restoration, one of the most technically dazzling films ever made. The performances -- by Michel Simon as the rather gross Père Jules, Dita Parlo and Jean Dasté as the young couple trying to start married life on a cramped river barge, and Gilles Margaritis as the madcap peddler who almost wrecks their marriage -- are extraordinary. Cinematographer Boris Kaufman overcame the severe limitations of filming scenes in the cramped quarters below-decks as well as open-air scenes for which the weather refused to cooperate. Vigo and Kaufman stage visual compositions that have a freshness that never seems arty. And who can ever forget Simon's Père Jules clambering aboard the barge with a kitten on his shoulders? Every corner of L'Atalante is filled with life.

Etienne.

B-3 : Oscars 2023 Predictions - A Film fan's perspective (Part - 1)
The 95th Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars®, will take place on March 13 at 5:30 AM IST. The celebrations of the Oscar season are at their peak. Amid the fun and excitement, here's a look at the movies categories and our predictions of the winners:-
Best Picture
Nominations:
All Quiet on the Western Front
Avatar: The Way of Water
The Banshees of Inisherin
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
TAR
Top Gun: Maverick
Triangle of Sadness
Women Talking
Prediction: The Fabelmans
The Academy might favor a movie that exhibits the love for cinema through the eyes of one of Hollywood's most-respected directors - Steven Spielberg. Either originally-written movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin can give tough competition.
Best Director
Nominees:
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Todd Field, TÁR
Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness
Prediction: Steven Spielberg
Spielberg would be the rightful winner for it. If it happens, he would be the third person to win three directing Oscars - after Frank Capra and William Wyler.
Best Original Screenplay
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin – Martin McDonagh
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
The Fabelmans – Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner
Tár – Todd Field
Triangle of Sadness – Ruben Östlund
Prediction: The Banshees of Inisherin/Everything Everywhere All At Once
Unlike the first two categories, the Daniels and Martin McDonagh would be fighting for this award. It's the fight between the battle of multiverses & the conflict between two friends.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson, and Ian Stokell (based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – Rian Johnson; based on characters created by Johnson and the film Knives Out
Living – Kazuo Ishiguro (based on the original motion picture screenplay Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, and Hideo Oguni)
Top Gun: Maverick – Screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie; Story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks; based on the film Top Gun written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.
Women Talking – Sarah Polley (based on the novel by Miriam Toews)
Prediction: Women Talking
Women Talking would be the ideal winner for the film adaptation of the atrocities by men against women (inspired by the Manitoba Colony, a remote and isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia).
Best Actor
Nominees:
Austin Butler – Elvis as Elvis Presley
Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin as Pádraic Súilleabháin
Brendan Fraser – The Whale as Charlie
Paul Mescal – Aftersun as Calum Paterson
Bill Nighy – Living as Mr. Rodney Williams
Prediction: Austin Butler/Colin Farrell/Brendan Fraser
Fraser's portrayal of an obese, depressed man can bring the Academy in his favor. He would compete with Austin Butler's portrayal of the King of Rock n' Roll & Farrell's character of an Irishman betrayed by his best friend (both actors won this year's Golden Globes).
Best Actress
Nominees:
Cate Blanchett – Tár as Lydia Tár
Ana de Armas – Blonde as Norma Jeane Mortensen / Marilyn Monroe
Andrea Riseborough – To Leslie as Leslie Rowlands
Michelle Williams – The Fabelmans as Mitzi Schildkraut-Fabelman
Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once as Evelyn Quan Wang
Prediction: Cate Blanchett/Michelle Yeoh
It'll be the fight between Blanchett's complex character of an orchestra conductor & Yeoh's role of a superwoman protecting the multiverse from her daughter.
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees:
Brendan Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin as Colm Doherty
Brian Tyree Henry – Causeway as James Aucoin
Judd Hirsch – The Fabelmans as Boris Schildkraut
Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin as Dominic Kearney
Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once as Waymond Wang
Prediction: Ke Huy Quan
This one's gonna go to Indiana Jones' sidekick - Short Round, i.e., Quan - for playing a kind and friendly person to his wife in different universes.
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees:
Angela Bassett – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Queen Ramonda
Hong Chau – The Whale as Liz
Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin as Siobhán Súilleabháin
Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once as Deirdre Beaubeirdre
Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All at Once as Joy Wang / Jobu Tupaki
Prediction: Angela Bassett
All hail the Queen Mother!!! Bassett's likely to take the trophy home for portraying the grieving mother of the late Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa.

I saw your tags about French book ideas 👀 i’m currently at a level where I’m just looking at graphic novels to read (I think I’ve got dialogue down but prose? Uhhhh) but if you had book recs that are above that level I can tuck them away for the future
Hi @sofflepoffle! I’m always super happy to have the opportunity to talk about french litterature, so i made you a little list, from easier reads to harder things!
Pierre Bottero - Le chant du Troll (French writer) This is my favorite writer of all times, and he writes children’s books. He’s incredible, his writing is so poetic and deep and well developped, with beautiful characters and a nice storyline. This one is a graphic novel, i usually dont suggest to start with this one because the story is 1000x more emotionnal if you already know about the world and who the kid is, but my mother read it out of the blue and she cried so i’d say it still hits?
Hergé - Tintin (Writer from Belgium) You’re probably already familiar with the Tintin series, they’re honestly good as a learning tool. I would suggest Le secret de la licorne, On a marché sur la lune, or Les 7 boules de crystal.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - Le petit prince (French writer) Pretty well known, its easy to read, cute and wholesome overall, would recommend trying it!
Pierre Bottero - La quête d’Ewilan (French writer) He got a few book series, but they all connect with each other, so this is a good place to start but you could start from somewhere else! Easy read, since it’s a children’s book.
Jocelyn Boisvert - Mort et déterré (Writer from Québec) YA book, so pretty easy to follow! Cute story of a teenager who dies, but somehow doesnt fully dies? He becomes some kind of zombie creature, and then just chill as a zombie with his bestie, trying to do things he never got to do in his life.
Jocelyne Saucier - Il pleuvait des oiseaux (Writer from Québec) I have to say, i didnt read it, but my friend recommended it to me, and he says its a good and easy read! They also made it into a movie, if you wanna try that.
Patrick Senécal - Any book of him, really (Writer from Québec) This writer is kind of our own Stephen King (kinda more gross and less good, no offense to the dude), so if its your kind of thing you could check it out, pretty easy read!
Michel Folco - Dieu et nous seuls pouvons (French writer) Comedic story of a family of excecutioners living in the XVIIe century. There is some torture and lots of killing of course, so avoid if its not your thing, but over all pretty good book!
Jean Barbe - Comment devenir un monstre (Writer from Québec) Very good book, heavy read because its a quite serious book. Very good tho!
Domique Fortier - Du bon usage des étoiles (Writer from Québec) Historical fiction, i liked the suspense and the description of the territory, a very captivating read!
Véronique Grenier - Hiroshimoi (Writer from Québec) Fun fact, this writer was my philosophy teacher in college! She’s a poet and a writer, so this book is kinda halfway between both? It’s a love story, or rather a break up story, but written in form of a poem. It’s kinda hard to read, because she plays a lot on sounds, creates new words by mixing two together, so hard to read, but also pretty short sentences.
Boris Vian - L’Écume des jours (French writer) A personnal favorite of mine, its an absurd tragedy, putting it on the top of the list because of the “absurd” quality of it. A lot of things do not make sense, like rooms that change shape depending on the music playing.
I didnt want to into too much of a big rant, so just putting those i can think of quickly, but if you want more ideas, like more easy read or more medium reads or whatever you can always hit me up! I would also suggest reading something you’re already familiar with? You might be already doing that, but if not, for me its what helped the most. I literally just took books i read in french, found them in english, and then tried reading that. I hope this helps, hit me up if you need anything else!
#ask#for real hit me up if you want more personnalized ideas#i have no idea what you like#but if you're more into one thing then i can expand on that more#i loove books so always happy to help#book rec asks

In 1982, André Bamberski learns about the death of his 14 year-old daughter, Kalinka, while she was on vacation with her mother and stepfather in Germany. Convinced that Kalinka’s death was not an accident, Bamberski begins to investigate.
