“Gatineau Man Overpowers Armed Robber,” Ottawa Journal. September 17, 1941. Page 36. ---- Grappling with a sailor whom he alleged had robbed him at the point of a rifle, Ernest Denoncourt, 42, of 17 St. Jean Baptiste street, Gatineau Point, overpowered the man in a scuffle in front of his home at 6.20 p.m. Tuesday and held him until police arrived.
The sailor, 18-year-old James Worrington, of England, was taken into custody by Police Chief Robert Hawken, lodged in Gatineau Point jail and later removed to Hull jail to await trial. Chief Hawken seized as evidence a .35 calibre sporting rifle, in which were two live cartridges, and 18 cartridges found in the young man’s pockets.
With Levelled Rifle. Mr. Denoncourt claimed the man had come to his house shortly after six o’clock:
‘I was eating my supper with my mother, Mrs. Benoit Denoncourt, when I heard him knock. I went to the door and he was standing there with a rifle leveled at me.
‘‘You see this?’ he asked me, holding the rifle out. ‘I mean business. Give me the ignition keys to your car.’ My car was park outside. Jean Gascon, one of my neighbors, said he saw the man get off a truck that drove through town. He looked around and then came to my house. He must have been looking for a car.
‘I told him the key was in the back room and he made me get it. I put it on the bed. He heard some change rattling in my pocket and asked for it. I gave it to him. Then he asked for my wallet. I told him I had none, though I had one with $10 in it.
‘He made me put on my shirt, coat and hat, and asked me if I knew the way to North Bay. I said I did not, so he asked me if I knew the Montreal road. I said ‘yes’ so he told me to ‘get along’. He told me to tell my mother to keep quiet, and we wen out to the car. ‘Just act normal’, he said.’’
Caught Off Guard. Outside the house, Mr. Denoncourt watched for a chance to catch the man off guard. He reached in the car and unlocked the rear door. The sailor, still holding the rifle, turned the gun away from Mr. Denoncourt as he climbed in the car. Mr. Denoncourt seized the weapon, pulled it from the young man’s hands and struck him with it. He succeeded in throwing the sailor to the ground and held him there, shouting for help.
A neighbor, Mrs. Omer Legault, telephoned Police Chief Hawken. At the same time, Oliva Therrien, working at the foot of the Gatineau River bank across the street, rushed to his aid. Chief Hawken handcuffed the man and took him to the town police station, later removing him to Hull.
The sailor said he had left his ship at Halifax. ////
“Soldier Admits Guilt In Rifle Hold-Up,” Ottawa Journal. September 17, 1941. Page 36. ---- An 18-year-old English gunner who ‘jumped ship’ from the Merchant Marine vessel on which he had been serving at an eastern Canadian port, today pleaded guilty before Magistrate Millar in Hull court to armed robbery, in the ‘movie-thriller’ hold-up of a Gatineau Point man last night.
The accused James Worrington, of England, elected summary trial, and in a firm voice, admitted stealing at rifle point from Ernest Denouncourt, paper-maker, an automobile and $2 in cash, after the magistrate had warned him:
‘You realize you are pleading guilty to a charge which might send you to the penitentiary for life?’
Magistrate Miller instructed Police Chief Robert Hawken, of Gatineau Point who lodged him in the community jail, after Dennoncourt, had overpowered his assailant, to notify military authorities of Worrington’s arrest. His Worship remanded the accused until September 26, for sentence.
In Army Uniform Worrington was garbed in his army uniform during his arraignment, Chief Hawken explaining to the court that Sam Long, East Templeton sportsman, who had given him shelter for three days in his cabin, had brought the uniform to Hull this morning.
He explained that Worrington was wearing a suit of clothes taken from Long’s cabin and that it was Long’s rifle the accused used during the hold-up.
Short in stature but of sturdy build, the youthful accused, who explained to the chief he had given his age as being older than he actually was to get into the army, remarked that ‘it doesn’t matter’, when he asked to elect.
Magistrate Millar suggested that in that case he might proceed with a preliminary hearing, when Crown Attorney Francois Caron, K.C., suggested to His Worship the accused might desire summary trial.
‘I would like trial without a jury,’ Worrington told the court.
Holding Pay Book Chief Hawken said that he was holding Worrinton’s British Army Pay Book, which showed that he was still on active service, and a permit from harbor authorities granting the accused shore leave.
‘I have the number of his ship and all information relating to that here,’ the chief told the court.’
The chief explained that Mr. Long first saw the accused on the highway, and being a Britisher himself, recognized his uniform, and took Worrington to his cabin. Upon returning from his work at the cement block plant, he discovered that a suit of clothes and a rifle had been taken.
He notified Chief Hawken, who informed him that Worrington was under arrest.
